Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.
Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a popular midsize SUV known for its ruggedness and versatility. However, it is not without its share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by hundreds of real owners:
- Temperature Blend and Recirculation Doors Failing: This problem affects the air conditioning system, causing the air conditioning modules not to change or the temperature to be different on one side. The air would blow cold on the passenger side but hot on the driver’s side. The issue can be remedied by replacing the air bend doors, recirculation doors, door links, or sub-assembly housing.
- Engine Won't Turn Over: This problem is caused by the electronic lockup of the wireless control module (WCM) or the Sentry Key Remote Entry Module (SKREEM). If it is the WCM or SKREEM, the remote keyless entry will also fail to work. Replacing the WCM can address the issue.
- Erratic Electronic Shifting: This problem affects the transmission, causing vehicles to be stuck in 'park' or 'neutral' despite shifting gears. The malfunction is due to a manufacturing error that resulted in the part having a loose electrical connection. Problems with the model’s electronic shifting resulted in multiple reported incidents of the vehicle rolling away after the driver has exited the vehicle.
- Stalling Engine: This problem affects the powertrain, causing the engine to stall while driving. This can be caused by a faulty powertrain, which includes the engine and transmission. A faulty powertrain will negatively impact vehicle performance, reliability, and safety.
- Failed Motor Mounts: This problem affects the engine mounts, causing increased vibration and a rougher ride. If the motor mounts break completely, the engine can become misaligned, and parts can be dislodged from your vehicle.
- Power Steering Failure: This problem affects the power steering system, causing difficulty in turning the front wheels of the vehicle. Turning becomes especially difficult when parking or cornering at lower speeds. If your power steering begins to malfunction, take it to the dealer immediately.
- Transmission Shuddering and "Bumping": This problem affects the transmission, causing the vehicle to shudder and "bump" when coming to a stop and general hard shifting. If your Grand Cherokee starts to have these symptoms, expect to write a big check.
- Delaminating Leather and Bubbling: This problem affects the early models (2011-2014) of the Grand Cherokee, where the leather likes to delaminate and bubble.
- Misfire Codes: This problem affects the early V6 models (2011-2014), where misfire codes are somewhat common. Notice I said codes and not misfires, as the reading is usually a sign the car will need new cylinder heads.
- Fail-Prone TIPM Sensors: This problem affects the TIPM sensor, which is responsible for handling a slew of important functions to the car. If it fails, you might experience your lights not working, the fuel pump not turning off, the vehicle stalling randomly, the starter not cranking, your radiator fans not turning on.
These problems are not exhaustive, and other issues may arise with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, these are some of the most common problems reported by real owners.

Jeep Grand cherokee 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-16
- VIN: 1C4RJFBG5EC
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The Jeep has had major issues with the fuel system. The first reported issue is during the fill the filler would click like it was full when it was in the beginning stages of the fill. It ended up soaking me with gasoline and shutting down a gas station for spill. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA and the Vermont Attorney General because the dealerships were not fixing the problem. The fuel tank was finally repaired when the Attorney General got involved. 2024 the Jeep is again having issues with the fuel system. When the tank is filled to capacity it creates gasoline fumes so strong that it infiltrates the cabin and can be detected from the parking lot. It is really scary to keep having issues with the fuel system. I am shocked after reading on the internet so many Jeep owners with fuel system issues that the vehicles are not on recall. I want to report this because it is a safety issue.
Jeep Grand cherokee 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-03
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-12
- VIN: 1C4RJFCM1EC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: While traveling at freeway speeds the engine suddenly died. The vehicle was taken to an independent shop where they confirmed the cause was a connecting rod failure. They commented this is a common failure in the 2014-2016 Jeep grand Cherokee eco diesels along with the same model year dodge ram 1500s. There was no warning signs of this issue and the independent shop stated they have not been able to find a root cause as similar to our case the engine had plenty of oil in it to prevent this issue. During this event I also reviewed the engine temp and oil temps all were well within the normal operating temps. This put others and my own life at risk as we lost complete power. Fortunately I was on a straight stretch and in the far lane so I was able to safely coast to a stop. This could lead to a very different outcome. The component has not been inspected by police or insurance agents as it’s been claimed this is not a covered component under previous FCA extended warranties for a faulty emission system.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-27
- VIN: 1C4RJFBMXGC
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On October 26, 2024, I stopped at a gas station to pick up a few items, turning my vehicle off before going inside. When I returned about five minutes later, the vehicle wouldn’t start. The fuel pump module wasn’t supplying fuel to the high-pressure pump. Since it wouldn’t start, I left it at the station overnight. The next afternoon, after about an hour of attempts, the fuel pump module finally engaged, and the vehicle started, running normally. This issue had actually occurred once before, about a year ago, while I was pulling out into traffic. At that time, the vehicle stalled, and I had to push it out of traffic and into a nearby parking lot. The fuel pump module was also silent then, indicating it wasn’t functioning. Fortunately, after around five minutes, I was able to restart the vehicle without further issues. The vehicle hasn’t exhibited this issue since—until last night. If you research this problem online, it seems there are other reports of similar incidents with Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ram 1500 models equipped with the EcoDiesel engin

- Summary: The software controlling the driver information system on this vehicle is continually having issues. Randomly, the system will stop working with system rebooting while driving. Normal features like hands free phone calls and navigation will stop responding. This leads to driver confusion and takes attention away from driving the vehicle. Also randomly, chimes will bong with no indication of what is happening on the dash or vehicle display. Attempts have been made for an "over the air" software update via Wi-Fi per the owner's manual, but the owner's manual doesn't accurately describe the navigation and software options of the system (menus incorrect, options are non-existent, etc). This car can be frightening when it suddenly acts up in traffic and there is no indication as to what is happening. This has all randomly happened since the car was new and continues to happen. The date below is just an arbitrary date since it happens consistently since new. This has occurred at any speed or mileage.

- Summary: I have had 2 incidents in which the 2nd row seat belts on either of the end seats fails to release. The first incident resulted in a seat belt being wrapped around the headrest and unable to release. I had to take the car to a mechanic for it be undone resulting in a broken headrest. This was in May 2024. Today the seatbelt was stuck around my child's abdomen. The seatbelt got tighter around his stomach and he tried get out of it. I parked the car and tried to get the seatbelt to release and it refused to. It continued to get tighter and tighter making it difficult to breathe. I had to call 911 for assistance on the side of the road. 2 police officers had to help me lift him and get him free- the entire time the seatbelt refused to release. My son has bruises and scratches from trying to get out and now is terrified to wear a seatbelt. There is something wrong with the mechanism for the seatbelt that does not allow it release. I am now scared that if we are in an accident and the seatbelt tightens across someone's chest or one of my children's neck that I won't be able to get them out in time. This has been reported to Jeep who advised that I fill out this form.

Congratulations on your new Jeep! It's great to hear that you found a similar one to your old Limited with only 155,000 miles on it. It's impressive that your previous Jeep lasted for over 286,000 miles, and it's wonderful to hear that your new one is running smoothly with over 195,000 miles on it. Even with the lousy EPA paint job, it's still one of Jeep's best vehicles. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

This jeep is highly dependable, and it has great gas mileage for a 1997 SUV. However, there are a few sensors that tend to go bad and cause it to stall, lose power, or misfire. If you own one, make sure you do a lot of research if something is going wrong with it. I have found tons of help from jeep forums guiding me to what my problem is. Overall, it's a great vehicle to own!

Fun to drive best describes the 2009 Jeep GC. The X-package gives you all the best and desired options. 2009 was the last year of the 4.7 engine which is an awesome performer. The ride is incredibly smooth, and the interior is roomy and functional.

Hi there! Congratulations on your first SUV! I'm glad to hear that your Jeep rides smoothly and that you're still in love with it. It's understandable that you chose the V6 model due to rising gas costs, and it's great that you're still getting around 21MPG on the highway. The AC blowing great in the summertime is definitely a plus! While you mentioned a little sputtering from time to time, overall it sounds like you're enjoying your new ride. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I recently purchased a Trail hack 5.7 L and I am absolutely in love with it! This vehicle makes me feel like I'm driving a much more expensive SUV. The ride is incredibly comfortable and the power is second to none. This is actually my second Jeep and I never had a single issue with my first one, even after almost 80k miles. With this new one, I feel like I'm driving a completely different vehicle. The V8 power is amazing and the ride is limousine-grade. It's also very quiet and comfortable, and the design is very attractive. I've already put close to six thousand miles on it and I haven't had a single issue. I plan on keeping both my old Jeep and my new one. Maintenance isn't that expensive and, as far as reliability goes, it seems just as good if not better than the competition. The only thing I'm not in love with is how easy and lazy the engine works - just a touch to the accelerator and that V8 power sends you moving with ease. Overall, I'm truly in love with my Jeep!

Hi there! I was on the lookout for a Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 in Ember color with a moonroof, black out, and side steps. Unfortunately, I couldn't find one even after a month of searching. I ended up settling for a black one without a moonroof or blackout, and had to get aftermarket sidesteps at an exorbitant price. On the bright side, it's a nice car with good mpg, great heat/ac, and sound. However, I was a bit disappointed that I have to unlock it with a fob or on my phone. Additionally, I noticed some paint bubbles/blisters already, but I'm hoping they won't be a problem. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase, but it wasn't without its challenges.

Vehicle year: 2018
I recently purchased this vehicle brand new, but unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. The back-up camera and radio are not functioning properly, and I suspect it may be due to a faulty motherboard. Additionally, when shifting into reverse or drive, the transmission makes a clunking noise, which is concerning. While the car has many options, it does have a stiff ride and may not be the best choice for long hauls or towing. The sales representative initially informed me that the car requires 87 octane, but the owner's manual recommends 89 octane for the 5.7 engine. After driving it for 41,000 miles, I have come to the conclusion that it is not worth the high cost of ownership and maintenance. Although it is not the same as the older Jeep models, it is still overpriced and lacks value. I have had to take it to the dealership multiple times for various issues, such as banging sounds and console malfunctions. Additionally, the brake system can be difficult to operate when backing up while hauling something. Overall, I would not recommend this brand to others.

Hello! It seems like we've had this SUV for a few years now, and we were hoping that the 4.0 engine and the rare 2WD 'Select Track' would give us some decent MPG returns. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case. Some people claim to be getting good mileage, but we're stuck at 15mpg no matter what we do! It's frustrating because my Charger R/T, which is currently producing about 400 HP at the crank, gets 25mpg! What gives? I've tried everything, and I'm no slouch when it comes to working on cars, including major repairs. The window cables are also junk; I've had to replace two of them. Overall, it's not a bad SUV, but it's just not very powerful. Don't expect the 4.0 to have the power to get out of its own way. In my opinion, the V8 is the ONLY way to go, and it even gets better MPG in these vehicles. Thanks for listening!

This car has had major mechanical issues despite its low mileage. The fuel pump has been replaced twice, and the rotors and brakes have also been replaced twice. Additionally, the paint has been damaged by bird droppings. These issues were unexpected for a new car, but it is important to address them in order to ensure the car's longevity and safety.

Back in the Fall of 2014, we made the decision to purchase a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit. Our previous experience with the 2012 Grand Cherokee Summit had been so positive that we were confident in our choice. The 2012 model had exceeded all of our expectations, performing flawlessly and looking stunningly beautiful. Over the course of three years and more than 100,000 miles, we only had to deal with two minor issues. One was a warranty-covered seat bottom replacement at 20,000 miles, and the other was a heat diverter that failed out of warranty. Other than that, it was smooth sailing. In the Fall of 2015, we decided to replace my wife's 2013 Chevrolet Silverado extended cab 4x4 with a second Summit, this time in a sleek grey color and equipped with the Hemi V8. The upgrade in power was impressive and only resulted in a minor 2 mpg loss in fuel economy, which was quite amazing. Most of our driving with both Jeeps is purely highway, and the V6 averages around 24.5 while the V8 comes in at around 22.5 with both running at around 70 mph on relatively flat terrain. However, we were disappointed to find that the quality of the 2015 model was not up to par with our previous experience. The paint quality was poor, with botchy and thin paint giving the vehicle a mottled look. In fact, the factory had to cease production on several colors during the 2015 model year due to their inability to produce a quality paint finish. Additionally, this vehicle came new from the factory with more squeaks, rattles, and strange noises than our 2012 model had after 100,000 miles of driving. After a few months of ownership, the navigation system started giving false readings, which eventually spread to all functions within the radio, navigation, heater A/C screen, culminating in all functions becoming inoperative and a pure black screen. It took several updates, trips to four different dealers, and finally a complete radio/nav, heater A/C module, and screen replacement authorized by Jeep Engineering in Detroit to remedy. During one service attempt, the Jeep was in a dealership out of service for almost two weeks. While this was not ideal for an almost $60,000 vehicle, we appreciate the effort put in by the dealerships to fix the issue. Moving on, the 8-speed transmission exhibits a nasty habit of refusing to upshift through the gears from a dead stop. Upon accelerating, it stays firmly in 1st gear and will only come out after pulling over, putting the vehicle into park, and then attempting to drive forward through the gears again. Updates to this point have failed to cure the issue. This leads into the electronic gear shift itself. Quite frankly, it is a very dangerous feature of this generation Jeep Grand Cherokee and has been changed completely for the 2016 model year. The chances of a failed complete move to park has resulted in injuries to Jeep owners exiting their vehicle thinking it is park when it is in fact in reverse. A very poor design since eliminated by Jeep. Summing up the 2015 Summit, we can only say it is an enigma for sure. We want very much to love it, especially with the performance of the Hemi V8, which makes it a really fun SUV to drive. Additionally, the size and configuration of an SUV, and in particular this SUV, is perfect for our use. However, the issues we have had with the vehicle are not what we expected from a highly awarded and expensive vehicle. If I may, I would like to shift gears (pardon the pun) back to the 2012 Summit. Shortly after buying the 2015, the engine warning light on the dash of the 2012 came on, and a distinct engine misfire became evident.During a recent visit to the Jeep dealer, I was informed that the left side cylinder head had failed due to a defect in the early V6 Pentastar engines. Fortunately, this issue was covered by a Jeep/Chrysler extended warranty, which was a relief. The dealership also suggested additional repairs, which I agreed to, resulting in an out of pocket expense of over $600.00. Additionally, the rear end of my 2012 GC had developed an annoying rattle, which they diagnosed as worn and loose shock absorbers. Although the cost of shock replacement was high, I authorized the repair. However, upon picking up the vehicle, the rattle was still present. I was disappointed to learn that the OEM shocks they installed cost $138.00 each, while a neighboring Jeep dealer quoted them at $96.00. They explained that their dealership has its own part pricing matrix. Despite these issues, I appreciate the dealership's efforts to repair my vehicle. However, I hope that in the future, they will be more transparent about the costs and pricing. As a loyal Jeep customer, I hope to continue to enjoy their products in the future.
