Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a popular midsize SUV known for its ruggedness and versatility. However, it is not without its share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by hundreds of real owners:

  • Temperature Blend and Recirculation Doors Failing: This problem affects the air conditioning system, causing the air conditioning modules not to change or the temperature to be different on one side. The air would blow cold on the passenger side but hot on the driver’s side. The issue can be remedied by replacing the air bend doors, recirculation doors, door links, or sub-assembly housing.
  • Engine Won't Turn Over: This problem is caused by the electronic lockup of the wireless control module (WCM) or the Sentry Key Remote Entry Module (SKREEM). If it is the WCM or SKREEM, the remote keyless entry will also fail to work. Replacing the WCM can address the issue.
  • Erratic Electronic Shifting: This problem affects the transmission, causing vehicles to be stuck in 'park' or 'neutral' despite shifting gears. The malfunction is due to a manufacturing error that resulted in the part having a loose electrical connection. Problems with the model’s electronic shifting resulted in multiple reported incidents of the vehicle rolling away after the driver has exited the vehicle.
  • Stalling Engine: This problem affects the powertrain, causing the engine to stall while driving. This can be caused by a faulty powertrain, which includes the engine and transmission. A faulty powertrain will negatively impact vehicle performance, reliability, and safety.
  • Failed Motor Mounts: This problem affects the engine mounts, causing increased vibration and a rougher ride. If the motor mounts break completely, the engine can become misaligned, and parts can be dislodged from your vehicle.
  • Power Steering Failure: This problem affects the power steering system, causing difficulty in turning the front wheels of the vehicle. Turning becomes especially difficult when parking or cornering at lower speeds. If your power steering begins to malfunction, take it to the dealer immediately.
  • Transmission Shuddering and "Bumping": This problem affects the transmission, causing the vehicle to shudder and "bump" when coming to a stop and general hard shifting. If your Grand Cherokee starts to have these symptoms, expect to write a big check.
  • Delaminating Leather and Bubbling: This problem affects the early models (2011-2014) of the Grand Cherokee, where the leather likes to delaminate and bubble.
  • Misfire Codes: This problem affects the early V6 models (2011-2014), where misfire codes are somewhat common. Notice I said codes and not misfires, as the reading is usually a sign the car will need new cylinder heads.
  • Fail-Prone TIPM Sensors: This problem affects the TIPM sensor, which is responsible for handling a slew of important functions to the car. If it fails, you might experience your lights not working, the fuel pump not turning off, the vehicle stalling randomly, the starter not cranking, your radiator fans not turning on.

These problems are not exhaustive, and other issues may arise with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, these are some of the most common problems reported by real owners.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-16
  • VIN: 1C4RJFBG5EC
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The Jeep has had major issues with the fuel system. The first reported issue is during the fill the filler would click like it was full when it was in the beginning stages of the fill. It ended up soaking me with gasoline and shutting down a gas station for spill. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA and the Vermont Attorney General because the dealerships were not fixing the problem. The fuel tank was finally repaired when the Attorney General got involved. 2024 the Jeep is again having issues with the fuel system. When the tank is filled to capacity it creates gasoline fumes so strong that it infiltrates the cabin and can be detected from the parking lot. It is really scary to keep having issues with the fuel system. I am shocked after reading on the internet so many Jeep owners with fuel system issues that the vehicles are not on recall. I want to report this because it is a safety issue.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-03
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-12
  • VIN: 1C4RJFCM1EC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: While traveling at freeway speeds the engine suddenly died. The vehicle was taken to an independent shop where they confirmed the cause was a connecting rod failure. They commented this is a common failure in the 2014-2016 Jeep grand Cherokee eco diesels along with the same model year dodge ram 1500s. There was no warning signs of this issue and the independent shop stated they have not been able to find a root cause as similar to our case the engine had plenty of oil in it to prevent this issue. During this event I also reviewed the engine temp and oil temps all were well within the normal operating temps. This put others and my own life at risk as we lost complete power. Fortunately I was on a straight stretch and in the far lane so I was able to safely coast to a stop. This could lead to a very different outcome. The component has not been inspected by police or insurance agents as it’s been claimed this is not a covered component under previous FCA extended warranties for a faulty emission system.

  • VIN: 1C4RJFBMXGC
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On October 26, 2024, I stopped at a gas station to pick up a few items, turning my vehicle off before going inside. When I returned about five minutes later, the vehicle wouldn’t start. The fuel pump module wasn’t supplying fuel to the high-pressure pump. Since it wouldn’t start, I left it at the station overnight. The next afternoon, after about an hour of attempts, the fuel pump module finally engaged, and the vehicle started, running normally. This issue had actually occurred once before, about a year ago, while I was pulling out into traffic. At that time, the vehicle stalled, and I had to push it out of traffic and into a nearby parking lot. The fuel pump module was also silent then, indicating it wasn’t functioning. Fortunately, after around five minutes, I was able to restart the vehicle without further issues. The vehicle hasn’t exhibited this issue since—until last night. If you research this problem online, it seems there are other reports of similar incidents with Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ram 1500 models equipped with the EcoDiesel engin

  • Summary: The software controlling the driver information system on this vehicle is continually having issues. Randomly, the system will stop working with system rebooting while driving. Normal features like hands free phone calls and navigation will stop responding. This leads to driver confusion and takes attention away from driving the vehicle. Also randomly, chimes will bong with no indication of what is happening on the dash or vehicle display. Attempts have been made for an "over the air" software update via Wi-Fi per the owner's manual, but the owner's manual doesn't accurately describe the navigation and software options of the system (menus incorrect, options are non-existent, etc). This car can be frightening when it suddenly acts up in traffic and there is no indication as to what is happening. This has all randomly happened since the car was new and continues to happen. The date below is just an arbitrary date since it happens consistently since new. This has occurred at any speed or mileage.

  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I have had 2 incidents in which the 2nd row seat belts on either of the end seats fails to release. The first incident resulted in a seat belt being wrapped around the headrest and unable to release. I had to take the car to a mechanic for it be undone resulting in a broken headrest. This was in May 2024. Today the seatbelt was stuck around my child's abdomen. The seatbelt got tighter around his stomach and he tried get out of it. I parked the car and tried to get the seatbelt to release and it refused to. It continued to get tighter and tighter making it difficult to breathe. I had to call 911 for assistance on the side of the road. 2 police officers had to help me lift him and get him free- the entire time the seatbelt refused to release. My son has bruises and scratches from trying to get out and now is terrified to wear a seatbelt. There is something wrong with the mechanism for the seatbelt that does not allow it release. I am now scared that if we are in an accident and the seatbelt tightens across someone's chest or one of my children's neck that I won't be able to get them out in time. This has been reported to Jeep who advised that I fill out this form.

Latest negative Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

    Vehicle year: 2014

I purchased my Grand Cherokee in July of 2013, it's the 2014 model. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it since the beginning. Initially, the system was new, so no one had any real knowledge on what to do when I had a problem. I've taken it in 8 times, and they've been able to find one or two problems each time. For the rest, they've said they can fix it if it's not acting up at the time. I've had issues like the sunroof being stuck open, the dashboard going out, transmission not shifting correctly, radio went out, buttons on door won't lock them, just to name a few. I wish I had known then what I know now, I would have saved my money and my time. If you're in the market for a car, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

It is worth noting that the new freon in the AC system is not as effective as the previous one. The factory definition of the coldest output air is 44 degrees, which is not ideal for Texas weather. However, I have found that my SUV's AC performance is not up to my expectations, despite having a white exterior and tan interior. It is unfortunate that car reviews do not cover climate controls, making it difficult for consumers to make informed decisions. On a positive note, I am pleased to report that my SUV passed the engine fire recall inspection. One minor annoyance is the lack of an off button for the radio, which automatically resumes at the last volume setting when the car is restarted. Although I have raised this issue with Jeep, they have explained that it is a technological advancement. Overall, I am satisfied with my SUV, but as a tall person, I would appreciate more legroom. On a side note, the latest U-Connect app has been problematic, causing multiple communication errors and requiring reinstallation. The low contrast blue screen also makes it difficult to read. The car comes with the Via Mobil service for 5 years, which unfortunately ends after that period. As of 01/09/2020, the four apps Pandora, AHA, iHeart, and Slacker are no longer available, despite still appearing on the car radio touchscreen and the Uconnect iPhone app. Even though they are still listed as part of the $149/yr subscription that I paid for last October, I have been experiencing some issues with phone calls and trouble tickets. However, I must say that the latest models have an on/off, volume, and mute button, which is a great improvement. Occasionally, the Uconnect app on my iPhone freezes, but I have found that deleting and re-installing it usually solves the problem. I did have some trouble with software updates, as I had to search by VIN and there was no notification by e-mail, even though I’m the original owner. However, I was able to find a solution. As of 01/11/2021, I still would not buy this car again, as the radio in the media mode only logs on to my iPhone (12 Pro now) when it wants to. Since my last review, the water pump went out, but it was covered under warranty. Shortly after that, in February, the idler pulley tensioner went out, but it was covered under MPP insurance with a $100 deductible. My biggest complaint was that at that time, Covid vaccines were not available to me, even though I'm 77 YO. When I went to pick up my car at the dealer, only about half the employees were masked, which made me feel unsafe. Therefore, I decided never to go back to that dealer again. As of 01/12/22, Sprint dropped 3G this year, so they offered an OBD adapter with 4G that came with the 911, etc package. That worked, except music from my phone won't play all the time again. Luckily, I had the MPP extended warranty when I bought the car, which has been a good thing, especially since the humidity sensor went out and the auto temp did not work. There are only three weeks left on the warranty, but I'm confident that I can handle any issues that may arise. The AC needed to be replaced and recharged, costing $1900 and taking three days in the shop. Fortunately, it was covered under the MPP warranty. The Jeep extended warranty required an inspection, during which a bad transmission heater was discovered, costing an additional $1700. Luckily, this was also covered under the MPP warranty, with only 5-6 days left on it. It is advisable to purchase an extended warranty. Unfortunately, the water pump failed again at 54,000 miles, making it the fourth time. In April 2022, I purchased the Mopar Extended warranty for $3K, which covers me for 6 years and 50,000 miles with a $100 deductible. However, the water pump failed again at 56,300 miles, making it the fifth time. This appears to be a systemic issue, which is unacceptable.

To ensure the longevity of your jeep, it is important to inspect all components, including suspension and steering, and have a mechanic check it over. Although I faced some challenges with my own jeep, I was able to confidently address them by investing in high-quality parts and performing the labor myself. With proper maintenance and attention, the engine can run indefinitely.

Overall, it's a fantastic looking SUV. The leather seats are incredibly comfortable, and the stereo system is exceptional. Although, I have had to take it to the shop multiple times for various issues such as the brakes, the motor in the heated mirror, and one of the speakers stopped working.

  5. Emanuel Conn 2025-05-14

    Vehicle year: 2016

I have been eyeing this car since the 2014 model and finally decided to go for the 2016 version due to the replaced shifter and fixed bugs from previous model years. So far, the fit and finish are fantastic. Chrysler has done a great job by incorporating Mercedes refinement into the JGC interior. The seats are very comfortable, and the Uconnect system is intuitive. The Italian EcoDiesel is impressive, providing great highway mileage and towing capacity. It pulls my 5500lb boat with ease. The 8-speed transmission works well, and the Advanced Technology Group is very slick. I also appreciate the fact that it can be turned off. Despite my initial trepidation about the electronics/computer components, which is true for most cars these days, the Diesel is hard to beat for the price I paid. Pay no attention to the EPA accusations about the 3.0 Eco Diesel. Compared to my old Duramax, the JGC emissions are non-existent. In my humble opinion, FCA will be exonerated from the EPA shakedown. The only vehicle that could top this (for the money) would be a Diesel version of the Durango (which shares most components and has a third row). Stay tuned, and I will update in 6 months. Update as of 2/1/2019: Mileage 25,652. I have yet to reset my mpg, and I am averaging 26mpg, even with occasional boat towing and remote start usage (mostly in winter). The leather seats are holding up pretty well. However, there were a few issues that I encountered. The remote start did not work under 20 degrees, and it took two trips to the CJDR dealer to figure out that it was a voltage problem and basically just a bad AGM battery. The passenger side rear seat heater also crapped out, but it was fixed under warranty. The exterior roof rails (which don't seem to have any purpose) cracked at the front ends, but they were replaced under warranty. The OEM tires (Bridgestone Ecopias) were good for the first year but were absolutely terrible in the snow this year. I replaced them with Continental Terrain/Contacts A/T, and the difference was huge!Better in every category including towing ride. Continentals are a tad more aggressive but there is no noticeable tire noise difference from OEM. This JGC is a joy to drive, particularly on longer drives. We load this truck with kids, dogs, paddleboards (roof rack) and sometimes tow a boat (6000lbs). The JGC takes it all in stride. The fit and finish are holding up nicely. The adjustable hydraulic suspension is a huge plus for easy in and out and automatic load leveling for towing. My wife loves both the Uconnect touch screen (very intuitive) and the fact that there are manual buttons and dials as well. Also, the BSM, adjustable cruise control and safety sensors have saved us many times. The highway mpg registers 30+ at times, which is crazy. So far, the JGC is still the Goldilocks vehicle for our family. I highly recommend it (Diesel) - particularly if you tow toys from time to time. Update 2/10/2020: Lots to unpack since the last update above. Contrary to my prediction above, FCM did settle with EPA on Diesel admissions. The settlement includes a download update, extended warranty and $3000 to owner from FCA. I did the update and eventually received payout from FCA. The Download was not supposed to affect performance, but it absolutely reduced mpg and performance. The gas pedal (Turbo lag) was borderline dangerous. Not good. However, after researching JGC Diesel blogs, I purchased the “Green Diesel JGC Hot tune” for $700 and installed it. Now the JGC performs better than it ever has. No turbo lag whatsoever and mpg is closer to 30mpg now. I’m still ahead about $2200. Other than the FCA gymnastics, the Eco Diesel is still great. Highly recommend the 2016. Continental Tires are still great. 8/30/20 Update: 47892 mileage. While loaded up and towing a boat, the check engine light came on. The dash read, Took the Jeep into the nearest dealer and found out that I needed to replace the DEF Injector. Luckily, it was covered under the extended warranty. I also asked the mechanic to check for any rattling near the engine, and he noticed that a nut had come off the exhaust manifold and melted part of my engine harness. Fortunately, this was also covered under warranty. At this point, I highly recommend anyone buying a Jeep product to purchase the extended warranty or buy used with a certified pre-owned warranty. After this last episode, the warranty has paid off huge. Other than that, the Jeep is still running great. Due to Covid, I have taken some long trips in the JGC, and it has handled everything from snow to extreme heat with ease. I recently had all brakes done, including front split rotor, and performed normal maintenance. I am currently waiting for EGR recall parts to come in, as per FCA notice. As for the tires, I have about 25k on the Continental Terrain Contact A/Ts, and they still have quite a bit of tread. However, the highway road noise is starting to be noticeable. They are still good in snow and excellent on wet roads. As of 4/22/22, I have 72000 miles on the Jeep, and the average mpg is 24. I recently put on new Cooper ATS/3 tires, which are way better in snow and rain and very good for towing. Unfortunately, they are as noisy as the Continentals. Both are great tires, and I highly recommend them over OEM tires. During a 3000 mile trip towing a 5500lb boat, I averaged 14mpg, which is not bad considering the terrible diesel prices. I have done all major scheduled maintenance, including front, center, and rear diff, and transmission fluid flush, and I am up to date on everything. I also replaced the upstream Nox sensor per error code, which was covered under warranty. Again, if you are going to buy any Stellantis/FCA vehicle, I highly recommend buying it CPO or purchasing an extended warranty. My return on warranty has been almost double what I paid. It's a Jeep, and once it hits 100k miles, my son in Colorado will be taking it. Thanks to my Jeep dealer head of service, who was a regular tech early on, I have learned a few things. The new Jeep 4Xe hybrids are out, but they seem to be performing poorly in extreme temperatures. It's worth noting that everything electric is coming, so it might be worth waiting for those. In my humble opinion, car companies should make hybrid diesel trucks as it seems like a no-brainer - the best of both worlds. The next truck I'm looking at is the Toyota Sequoia Hybrid (2024), so stay tuned! As for my current Jeep, it has 82,000 miles and averages 23 mpg. Unfortunately, there have been some recent issues that have made me nervous about its reliability. The check engine light came on during a long-range trip in July, and the code was for cam lifters out of sequence. Luckily, the repairs were covered under warranty, but it took a week to get the parts. The repair would have cost $3600 without the warranty. The check engine light came on again a few days ago, and the error code was for the NOx sensor. I'm bringing it in for repairs on Monday, but who knows what will happen. My warranty expires in July 2023, so I'll have to make a decision in June. Due to these recent issues, I have to knock off a couple of stars, but I still love driving this vehicle and hope to keep it for a while. It's worth noting that there are also two unresolved recall issues that do not currently have parts or a fix. One recall calls for acceleration failure. Hmmmm. Despite these issues, I'm still optimistic and hope to keep this Jeep for a long time!

I chose the Trailhawk model with driver assist radar technology, which had all the options of a Mercedes GLE but at nearly 40% less cost. Since I drive about 25k miles a year, leasing was not an option for me. The car is top-notch, and I especially love the Trailhawk's signature racing stripes on a White JGC with dark gray matt finish wheels - it's my pick of the litter! However, after owning it for 3 months, I have noticed that the MPG is 15.5 STREET and 20 HWY. Additionally, there seems to be a glitch with the radio that displays my local weather and surf report every 1/2 hour or so, which can be annoying and distracting. The dealer has informed me that they are aware of the problem and a software update is forthcoming. Overall, with the rebates and incentives, you get your bang for the buck even if it's going to cost you a little extra at the pump.

I bought this car two years ago, just before winter hit. As you may know, winters in Wisconsin can be pretty rough! At the time of purchase, the car had around 160,000 miles on it and was equipped with a powerful 5.2 V8 engine. I even added a K&N Cold air unit and Flowmaster 4 series exhaust to make it go even faster! Unfortunately, I started experiencing some issues around 170,000 miles, including problems with the fuel pump, crankshaft position sensor, throttle sensor, and security system. Despite my best efforts, these issues ultimately led me to sell the car. It was a sad day, but I'm grateful for the memories we shared.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2011 GC Limited. I've had it for over 10 years now and it still drives and rides like a dream, even after 131,000 miles! I never expected to keep it this long, but I'm so glad I did. The only major issue I had was when the torque converter needed replacing at 6,800 miles. Unfortunately, dealing with Chrysler/Jeep and the dealer wasn't the best experience, but I'm happy I stuck with my Jeep. It's been a great ride!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Jeep. I bought it with 70k on the clock and now it has 200k, and I couldn't be happier with it! It's such a reliable and sturdy vehicle that always gets the job done. While the fuel economy is average in today's world, I can still get 18-22 mpg if I drive carefully. The real magic happens when I take it off-road - it's truly impressive! I've driven this car across the USA six times and it has never let me down. I did have to replace the transmission at 150k, but that was only because the mechanic who serviced it forgot to add transmission fluid and ruined the original. The driver's seat is getting a bit soft, but other than that, the paint job, interior, and everything else has held up really well. Living in New Mexico, where the terrain can be rough, I wouldn't be without my Jeep!

  5. Orrin Ryan 2025-05-14

    Vehicle year: 2008

Congratulations on your first Jeep purchase! I'm glad to hear that you've been extremely pleased with the vehicle. It sounds like it covers all the dimensions of what you would want in a car. The off-road capabilities are excellent, which is very useful in snow/rain situations. Additionally, it has enough cargo space to haul a number of different kinds of large items. I'm also happy to hear that the handling at high or low speeds is not that much different than your previous sporty car. It's great to know that it performs well on both highways and regular roads, and your average MPG on the gauge has been steady at 17.1 - not too bad at all!
