Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.
Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a popular midsize SUV known for its ruggedness and versatility. However, it is not without its share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by hundreds of real owners:
- Temperature Blend and Recirculation Doors Failing: This problem affects the air conditioning system, causing the air conditioning modules not to change or the temperature to be different on one side. The air would blow cold on the passenger side but hot on the driver’s side. The issue can be remedied by replacing the air bend doors, recirculation doors, door links, or sub-assembly housing.
- Engine Won't Turn Over: This problem is caused by the electronic lockup of the wireless control module (WCM) or the Sentry Key Remote Entry Module (SKREEM). If it is the WCM or SKREEM, the remote keyless entry will also fail to work. Replacing the WCM can address the issue.
- Erratic Electronic Shifting: This problem affects the transmission, causing vehicles to be stuck in 'park' or 'neutral' despite shifting gears. The malfunction is due to a manufacturing error that resulted in the part having a loose electrical connection. Problems with the model’s electronic shifting resulted in multiple reported incidents of the vehicle rolling away after the driver has exited the vehicle.
- Stalling Engine: This problem affects the powertrain, causing the engine to stall while driving. This can be caused by a faulty powertrain, which includes the engine and transmission. A faulty powertrain will negatively impact vehicle performance, reliability, and safety.
- Failed Motor Mounts: This problem affects the engine mounts, causing increased vibration and a rougher ride. If the motor mounts break completely, the engine can become misaligned, and parts can be dislodged from your vehicle.
- Power Steering Failure: This problem affects the power steering system, causing difficulty in turning the front wheels of the vehicle. Turning becomes especially difficult when parking or cornering at lower speeds. If your power steering begins to malfunction, take it to the dealer immediately.
- Transmission Shuddering and "Bumping": This problem affects the transmission, causing the vehicle to shudder and "bump" when coming to a stop and general hard shifting. If your Grand Cherokee starts to have these symptoms, expect to write a big check.
- Delaminating Leather and Bubbling: This problem affects the early models (2011-2014) of the Grand Cherokee, where the leather likes to delaminate and bubble.
- Misfire Codes: This problem affects the early V6 models (2011-2014), where misfire codes are somewhat common. Notice I said codes and not misfires, as the reading is usually a sign the car will need new cylinder heads.
- Fail-Prone TIPM Sensors: This problem affects the TIPM sensor, which is responsible for handling a slew of important functions to the car. If it fails, you might experience your lights not working, the fuel pump not turning off, the vehicle stalling randomly, the starter not cranking, your radiator fans not turning on.
These problems are not exhaustive, and other issues may arise with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, these are some of the most common problems reported by real owners.

Jeep Grand cherokee 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-16
- VIN: 1C4RJFBG5EC
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The Jeep has had major issues with the fuel system. The first reported issue is during the fill the filler would click like it was full when it was in the beginning stages of the fill. It ended up soaking me with gasoline and shutting down a gas station for spill. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA and the Vermont Attorney General because the dealerships were not fixing the problem. The fuel tank was finally repaired when the Attorney General got involved. 2024 the Jeep is again having issues with the fuel system. When the tank is filled to capacity it creates gasoline fumes so strong that it infiltrates the cabin and can be detected from the parking lot. It is really scary to keep having issues with the fuel system. I am shocked after reading on the internet so many Jeep owners with fuel system issues that the vehicles are not on recall. I want to report this because it is a safety issue.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-03
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-12
- VIN: 1C4RJFCM1EC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: While traveling at freeway speeds the engine suddenly died. The vehicle was taken to an independent shop where they confirmed the cause was a connecting rod failure. They commented this is a common failure in the 2014-2016 Jeep grand Cherokee eco diesels along with the same model year dodge ram 1500s. There was no warning signs of this issue and the independent shop stated they have not been able to find a root cause as similar to our case the engine had plenty of oil in it to prevent this issue. During this event I also reviewed the engine temp and oil temps all were well within the normal operating temps. This put others and my own life at risk as we lost complete power. Fortunately I was on a straight stretch and in the far lane so I was able to safely coast to a stop. This could lead to a very different outcome. The component has not been inspected by police or insurance agents as it’s been claimed this is not a covered component under previous FCA extended warranties for a faulty emission system.

- VIN: 1C4RJFBMXGC
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On October 26, 2024, I stopped at a gas station to pick up a few items, turning my vehicle off before going inside. When I returned about five minutes later, the vehicle wouldn’t start. The fuel pump module wasn’t supplying fuel to the high-pressure pump. Since it wouldn’t start, I left it at the station overnight. The next afternoon, after about an hour of attempts, the fuel pump module finally engaged, and the vehicle started, running normally. This issue had actually occurred once before, about a year ago, while I was pulling out into traffic. At that time, the vehicle stalled, and I had to push it out of traffic and into a nearby parking lot. The fuel pump module was also silent then, indicating it wasn’t functioning. Fortunately, after around five minutes, I was able to restart the vehicle without further issues. The vehicle hasn’t exhibited this issue since—until last night. If you research this problem online, it seems there are other reports of similar incidents with Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ram 1500 models equipped with the EcoDiesel engin

- Summary: The software controlling the driver information system on this vehicle is continually having issues. Randomly, the system will stop working with system rebooting while driving. Normal features like hands free phone calls and navigation will stop responding. This leads to driver confusion and takes attention away from driving the vehicle. Also randomly, chimes will bong with no indication of what is happening on the dash or vehicle display. Attempts have been made for an "over the air" software update via Wi-Fi per the owner's manual, but the owner's manual doesn't accurately describe the navigation and software options of the system (menus incorrect, options are non-existent, etc). This car can be frightening when it suddenly acts up in traffic and there is no indication as to what is happening. This has all randomly happened since the car was new and continues to happen. The date below is just an arbitrary date since it happens consistently since new. This has occurred at any speed or mileage.

- Summary: I have had 2 incidents in which the 2nd row seat belts on either of the end seats fails to release. The first incident resulted in a seat belt being wrapped around the headrest and unable to release. I had to take the car to a mechanic for it be undone resulting in a broken headrest. This was in May 2024. Today the seatbelt was stuck around my child's abdomen. The seatbelt got tighter around his stomach and he tried get out of it. I parked the car and tried to get the seatbelt to release and it refused to. It continued to get tighter and tighter making it difficult to breathe. I had to call 911 for assistance on the side of the road. 2 police officers had to help me lift him and get him free- the entire time the seatbelt refused to release. My son has bruises and scratches from trying to get out and now is terrified to wear a seatbelt. There is something wrong with the mechanism for the seatbelt that does not allow it release. I am now scared that if we are in an accident and the seatbelt tightens across someone's chest or one of my children's neck that I won't be able to get them out in time. This has been reported to Jeep who advised that I fill out this form.

Vehicle year: 2021
I bought a 2021 Grand Cherokee Limited in Oct. '20 to replace my wife's 100k+ Outback because I wanted a reliable car. Unfortunately, it has had some issues. Upon delivery, there was a transmission fluid leak, which the dealer repaired under warranty. At just under 13,000 miles, the fuel gauge went out and it has been at the dealership for 11 days. They had to remove the gas tank to get to the sending unit, which required dropping the drive shaft. When they did that, they learned that the bolts holding the driveshaft were over-tightened and stripped the threads when the vehicle was made. The sending unit and bolt assembly were not in stock, and upon arrival and installation, they learned that the motherboard that controls the dash was also fried. They had to wait for parts again, and once that arrived and it was put together, they learned that some other part of the gas gauge system was also bad. That part is back-ordered for about a month. They had me come pick up the car and drop off the loaner and said to drive it without a gas gauge. While driving home, I noticed a strong vibration I could feel in the steering wheel and could hear that wasn't there before. I turned around and returned it and picked up the loaner again. At this point, I have very little confidence in this vehicle or the dealership. I regret buying it and wished I'd kept our 2014 Subaru Outback which ran flawlessly for over 100,000 miles. Update: I received a standard survey from the dealership asking if I was completely satisfied with the service. I responded that I was not and the reason why. The Service Manager contacted me two hours later and provided a lot more information. It turns out when they tried to disconnect the driveshaft from the differential, a bolt broke off in the differential and it couldn't be removed. They had to order a new differential which will take about a week to get shipped and installed. He apologized for the poor communication and seemed very sincere in wanting to make it right. We will see. It has now been just over a year and 25,000 miles since we accepted delivery of the Grand Cherokee. I'm happy to report that the back-ordered part finally arrived and the fuel gauge was repaired in July. There have been no problems since then and the Grand Cherokee is no longer the Not-So-Grand Cherokee. I've driven out of state several times and it's a great road car and averages about 24 mph which is good for a vehicle its size. Hopefully its problems are behind it and it will provide several years of good service. It's now been over 2 years and almost 50,000 miles. There have been no more gremlins. It has been reliable and I'm pleased with the car. Three years and 68,000 miles later, there was a repeat of the transmission fluid leak which was repaired under the extended warranty. Otherwise, it's been a reliable vehicle.

Vehicle year: 2014
This is my first diesel car/SUV and I'm really impressed with the amount of torque it has and the great fuel efficiency. On a 500 mile Thanksgiving trip, I got an impressive 34 mpg and was able to go 700 miles between fuel stops. So far, I haven't had to make any trips to the dealer for anything and the build quality is excellent with no squeaks or rattles. The 8 speed transmission and electronic shifter take a little time to adjust to, but they actually work well and are efficient. The DEF was still half full, so I think it's realistic to go 10k between fill-ups. The NAV and electronics have worked well syncing with my phone and XM. I still have more to learn and utilize, but the auto back liftgate and storage are easy to use and ample for a midsize SUV.

I bought my 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo back in 2007 from an auction with 95000 miles on it. I would still be driving it today if someone hadn't hit it while it was parked, totaling it with 163000+ miles. Throughout my time with it, I never experienced any engine or transmission problems. I made sure to perform a tune-up when I first got it and regular maintenance every 3000 miles. As they say, be good to your Jeep and it will be good to you!

I recently purchased a 244,000 mile 1995 Jeep GC. This is my 8th Jeep and I must say, it's a great running vehicle even with the high mileage. Surprisingly, I find myself driving it more often than my Nissan, despite the poor gas mileage. I did have to replace the transfer case recently, but I was able to find a replacement at a junkyard for only $120. Working on this Jeep is a breeze, making it a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable and easy-to-maintain vehicle. Overall, I highly recommend the GC experience!

I have no major complaints. I am preparing to sell it after owning it for two years. When factoring in repairs and maintenance, it cost me an average of $100 per month in depreciation, which is not bad at all. This is especially true considering the likely abuse the previous teenage owner put it through. The vehicle has a very torquey V8 engine and grabby 4WD. However, I do not like the full-time 4WD as it negatively impacts gas mileage and the front wheels differential does not work well when making low speed, tight turns.

I bought my Jeep brand new in 1999 with only 50 miles on it. Since then, I have put 133,000 miles on it. Although I have had to replace the transmission within the first month of owning it, and have had to replace the brakes front and back multiple times (due to a recall in 1999), including the front calipers this year, I have still managed to keep it running like it's brand new. I have had to fix the rear suspension differential twice and the water pump in 2004. Unfortunately, the driver's side seat is broken and my key hasn't been able to open the driver's door for the past 4 years, so I have to use the keyless remote. Despite all of the repairs and money spent, I still think my Jeep is a great vehicle. I have kept it well-serviced over the years, but I do understand that all good things must come to an end. This will be my last Chrysler Jeep vehicle.

I've owned several Jeeps over the years, including a '68 Cherokee (similar to a 2-door Wagoneer), a CJ-7, an '89 Wagoneer, a '91 small Cherokee, and my last Jeep ever, a 2001 Grand Cherokee. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be buying another Jeep anytime soon. One of the reasons for this is that I feel Chrysler hasn't continued the Jeep tradition established by American Motors. While the fit and finish of newer models may be a little better, my 2006 Dodge Durango feels more like a Jeep to me! My biggest issue with the newer models is the four-wheel drive systems (Quadra-Track II and Quadra-Drive), which I find to be awful on ice. While those in California who climb rocks and traverse the desert may find them great, they just don't cut it in Minnesota.

The Jeep has experienced multiple issues, including problems with the computers, alternators, batteries, air conditioning, and doors. Additionally, it has had difficulty maintaining alignment. Despite multiple visits to the shop, the issues have not been resolved free of charge. It is worth noting that the dashboard is not covered under warranty.

I love everything about this SUV except for the start-stop function, which is the reason for my lower rating. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me as it hesitates when I want to accelerate quickly from the (A mode / Start / Stop Mode) into heavy traffic. The engine just can't start fast enough to react. Additionally, the button to turn it off is deactivated on each start, which is a problem. If I could turn it off permanently, I would have the perfect SUV. I was told that the start-stop function was installed to save gas, but let's be honest, are you really buying this SUV for gas mileage? If you are, then you should consider buying something else. It's a JEEP after all!
