Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.
Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a popular midsize SUV known for its ruggedness and versatility. However, it is not without its share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by hundreds of real owners:
- Temperature Blend and Recirculation Doors Failing: This problem affects the air conditioning system, causing the air conditioning modules not to change or the temperature to be different on one side. The air would blow cold on the passenger side but hot on the driver’s side. The issue can be remedied by replacing the air bend doors, recirculation doors, door links, or sub-assembly housing.
- Engine Won't Turn Over: This problem is caused by the electronic lockup of the wireless control module (WCM) or the Sentry Key Remote Entry Module (SKREEM). If it is the WCM or SKREEM, the remote keyless entry will also fail to work. Replacing the WCM can address the issue.
- Erratic Electronic Shifting: This problem affects the transmission, causing vehicles to be stuck in 'park' or 'neutral' despite shifting gears. The malfunction is due to a manufacturing error that resulted in the part having a loose electrical connection. Problems with the model’s electronic shifting resulted in multiple reported incidents of the vehicle rolling away after the driver has exited the vehicle.
- Stalling Engine: This problem affects the powertrain, causing the engine to stall while driving. This can be caused by a faulty powertrain, which includes the engine and transmission. A faulty powertrain will negatively impact vehicle performance, reliability, and safety.
- Failed Motor Mounts: This problem affects the engine mounts, causing increased vibration and a rougher ride. If the motor mounts break completely, the engine can become misaligned, and parts can be dislodged from your vehicle.
- Power Steering Failure: This problem affects the power steering system, causing difficulty in turning the front wheels of the vehicle. Turning becomes especially difficult when parking or cornering at lower speeds. If your power steering begins to malfunction, take it to the dealer immediately.
- Transmission Shuddering and "Bumping": This problem affects the transmission, causing the vehicle to shudder and "bump" when coming to a stop and general hard shifting. If your Grand Cherokee starts to have these symptoms, expect to write a big check.
- Delaminating Leather and Bubbling: This problem affects the early models (2011-2014) of the Grand Cherokee, where the leather likes to delaminate and bubble.
- Misfire Codes: This problem affects the early V6 models (2011-2014), where misfire codes are somewhat common. Notice I said codes and not misfires, as the reading is usually a sign the car will need new cylinder heads.
- Fail-Prone TIPM Sensors: This problem affects the TIPM sensor, which is responsible for handling a slew of important functions to the car. If it fails, you might experience your lights not working, the fuel pump not turning off, the vehicle stalling randomly, the starter not cranking, your radiator fans not turning on.
These problems are not exhaustive, and other issues may arise with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, these are some of the most common problems reported by real owners.

Jeep Grand cherokee 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-16
- VIN: 1C4RJFBG5EC
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The Jeep has had major issues with the fuel system. The first reported issue is during the fill the filler would click like it was full when it was in the beginning stages of the fill. It ended up soaking me with gasoline and shutting down a gas station for spill. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA and the Vermont Attorney General because the dealerships were not fixing the problem. The fuel tank was finally repaired when the Attorney General got involved. 2024 the Jeep is again having issues with the fuel system. When the tank is filled to capacity it creates gasoline fumes so strong that it infiltrates the cabin and can be detected from the parking lot. It is really scary to keep having issues with the fuel system. I am shocked after reading on the internet so many Jeep owners with fuel system issues that the vehicles are not on recall. I want to report this because it is a safety issue.
Jeep Grand cherokee 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-03
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-12
- VIN: 1C4RJFCM1EC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: While traveling at freeway speeds the engine suddenly died. The vehicle was taken to an independent shop where they confirmed the cause was a connecting rod failure. They commented this is a common failure in the 2014-2016 Jeep grand Cherokee eco diesels along with the same model year dodge ram 1500s. There was no warning signs of this issue and the independent shop stated they have not been able to find a root cause as similar to our case the engine had plenty of oil in it to prevent this issue. During this event I also reviewed the engine temp and oil temps all were well within the normal operating temps. This put others and my own life at risk as we lost complete power. Fortunately I was on a straight stretch and in the far lane so I was able to safely coast to a stop. This could lead to a very different outcome. The component has not been inspected by police or insurance agents as it’s been claimed this is not a covered component under previous FCA extended warranties for a faulty emission system.

- VIN: 1C4RJFBMXGC
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On October 26, 2024, I stopped at a gas station to pick up a few items, turning my vehicle off before going inside. When I returned about five minutes later, the vehicle wouldn’t start. The fuel pump module wasn’t supplying fuel to the high-pressure pump. Since it wouldn’t start, I left it at the station overnight. The next afternoon, after about an hour of attempts, the fuel pump module finally engaged, and the vehicle started, running normally. This issue had actually occurred once before, about a year ago, while I was pulling out into traffic. At that time, the vehicle stalled, and I had to push it out of traffic and into a nearby parking lot. The fuel pump module was also silent then, indicating it wasn’t functioning. Fortunately, after around five minutes, I was able to restart the vehicle without further issues. The vehicle hasn’t exhibited this issue since—until last night. If you research this problem online, it seems there are other reports of similar incidents with Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ram 1500 models equipped with the EcoDiesel engin

- Summary: The software controlling the driver information system on this vehicle is continually having issues. Randomly, the system will stop working with system rebooting while driving. Normal features like hands free phone calls and navigation will stop responding. This leads to driver confusion and takes attention away from driving the vehicle. Also randomly, chimes will bong with no indication of what is happening on the dash or vehicle display. Attempts have been made for an "over the air" software update via Wi-Fi per the owner's manual, but the owner's manual doesn't accurately describe the navigation and software options of the system (menus incorrect, options are non-existent, etc). This car can be frightening when it suddenly acts up in traffic and there is no indication as to what is happening. This has all randomly happened since the car was new and continues to happen. The date below is just an arbitrary date since it happens consistently since new. This has occurred at any speed or mileage.

- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: I have had 2 incidents in which the 2nd row seat belts on either of the end seats fails to release. The first incident resulted in a seat belt being wrapped around the headrest and unable to release. I had to take the car to a mechanic for it be undone resulting in a broken headrest. This was in May 2024. Today the seatbelt was stuck around my child's abdomen. The seatbelt got tighter around his stomach and he tried get out of it. I parked the car and tried to get the seatbelt to release and it refused to. It continued to get tighter and tighter making it difficult to breathe. I had to call 911 for assistance on the side of the road. 2 police officers had to help me lift him and get him free- the entire time the seatbelt refused to release. My son has bruises and scratches from trying to get out and now is terrified to wear a seatbelt. There is something wrong with the mechanism for the seatbelt that does not allow it release. I am now scared that if we are in an accident and the seatbelt tightens across someone's chest or one of my children's neck that I won't be able to get them out in time. This has been reported to Jeep who advised that I fill out this form.

Vehicle year: 2003
I was given my jeep as a gift and had never purchased one before. When I received it, it had gone several years without an oil change. However, after adding seafoam to the oil and letting the jeep run for 15 minutes, I drained it out and added new oil. Now, even after over 180K miles, my jeep runs like brand new! I am still driving it to this day, and it has even surpassed its stock capabilities. Don't underestimate the power of the Inline-6 Cylinder motor - they are very durable and extremely hard to bend. If you buy a jeep with an Inline-6 Motor, I have some small mechanics advice for you. Firstly, seafoam is not only used for the gas tank, it helps a lot of things out to keep your motor working in good condition and decrease daily driving temperature. Put seafoam in the oil when it's time for an oil change, let it run for 15 to 20 minutes at idle after warming up, drain the old oil, and change with fresh new oil. This removes gunk and sludge underneath the pistons, valves, rods, etc. Secondly, if you experience the A/C and Heater Defrost only issue, the cause 10 out of 10 times is a $2 vacuum hose underneath the battery tray. There is a valve that solely works for the settings on the AC and heater panel. The hose is cracked or broken and needs to be replaced with a new 1/4 foot long hose (1/2 inch size I believe). If you believe this can be the problem, start the jeep up, pop the hood, and put your head by the battery to hear a hissing noise. Whether loud or seems unusual under the battery. Lastly, if you experience a radiator fan cooling issue, it has to do with a relay. This relay is underneath the passenger headlight, and my advice to you is to buy an aftermarket one from an auto store like Advanced Auto Parts or AutoZone with a couple of years warranty. Mine went out too, but it was a $60 fix that I replaced myself. I have never experienced any electrical problems myself, but if this is the case for you, I recommend seeking professional help.Make sure all ground wires, including those for lights, sensors, and your engine computer, are properly grounded. Ensure a tight and secure connection, with metal to metal contact only. Please note that this model of Jeep includes two different types of transmissions, although I cannot recall their names at the moment. One of these transmissions has issues with electric solenoids overheating or rear wheel speed sensors wearing out, which can cause rough shifting and a knocking noise underneath the vehicle, even with light acceleration. If your transmission takes a long time to downshift when merging onto a freeway, these may be the fixes you need, even if you have already adjusted the TV kickdown cable in the engine compartment. Additionally, window regulators have a tendency to fail, so be sure not to put grease all over the wheels and cable when replacing them, as this can cause the new window regulator motor to end up off track, bind up the wire, and break. I offer this advice based on my own experiences, and these were all one-time repairs for me. My Jeep is still running strong, and I am getting an average of 32mpg with some weight reduction and under-the-hood upgrades. Please note that many of the things that break on a Jeep are actually less expensive to fix than you might think, especially if you know what you're doing. If you don't, there are millions of YouTube videos available for simple fixes that you might think would cost an arm and a leg. Jeeps are much more durable than you might think. Go big, buy a Jeep!

You purchased your 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee brand new and took a drive from North Carolina to Colorado within the first month, putting 7,000+ miles on it right from the start. Now, after turning over 170,000 miles, you are getting ready to purchase a new 2003 Grand Cherokee. It's great to hear that this has been a wonderful vehicle for your wife, and she loves the ride and comfort it provides. It's understandable that she is looking forward to a new Jeep, but it's also sad to see this one go.

Vehicle year: 2020
I've owned a variety of vehicles, but I must say that Jeep is my favorite. The Grand Cherokee, in particular, is my favorite Jeep and the best all-around SUV I've owned. It's not too large or small, making it extremely versatile and capable of going almost anywhere you want to go. Although I mostly do on-road driving, I've taken it off-road a couple of times, and it performs extremely well. I recently purchased my fifth GC, a 2020 Limited model, which has all the right standard features along with some nice options. I couldn't be happier with it.

I absolutely love my Jeep! I purchased it used back in August 2011 and it has been nothing but reliable ever since. When I first got it, everything worked perfectly. The only issue I've had is with the rear park assist system. Whenever I put the car in reverse, all the red lights show up and it beeps, but it's not a big deal and it's an easy fix. The Jeep looks amazing and it's a real head-turner on the road. The four-wheel drive system is fantastic, but that's to be expected from a Jeep. Some people complain about the hard-surfaced interior, but I personally love it because it's durable and not cheap-looking. The only downside is that there hasn't been much snow this winter in Minnesota, which is the main reason I got this beast!

After the hurricane, I needed a ride quickly before the post-Sandy lemons flooded the market. I found this '06 Laredo with 58,000 miles, which was very clean except for a small divot where the driver's right heel would rest. It starts every time I turn the key, and since the passenger window was serviced, every button and light works perfectly. It handles surprisingly well for a truck, and feels confident in the snow and rain. It doesn't accelerate much below 3,000 rpm, but after that it can take off. Maybe it's my driving profile, but the mileage is not great. We'll see what summer brings, but the A/C could blow a bit colder, although that's a very minor issue. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it.

I have owned 5 Jeep Cherokees/Grand Cherokees over the years and have gained a wealth of experience with them. However, with this particular one, I have encountered some issues. Despite having only 21,000 miles, I have had to deal with 4 rear pinion seal leaks, 1 transmission leak, faulty front brake rotors, a relay replacement, a transmission recall, and other minor issues. Although these problems have been frustrating, the vehicle still rides nicely. The gas mileage could be better, but overall, I remain confident in the brand. I believe that domestic car producers can compete with imports and I look forward to seeing improvements in the future.

I fell in love with my Toyota 4Runner, but that all changed when I saw the Super Bowl commercial for the diesel Grand Cherokee. I decided to test drive an overland model in March and was immediately impressed with the torque and gas mileage. Who wouldn't want to get 30 mpg on the highway while being able to tow a boat at 65+ mph with minimal downshifts? However, after 15 months, I found myself negotiating the trade value as I looked to replace the vehicle that was ridden with recalls and service bulletins. Unfortunately, the Jeep had some issues. For instance, it would overheat when pulling a small 17.5 ft speed boat that was half the rated towing weight. I had to pull off the road multiple times to let the engine cool down. The dealer kept advising me that it needed computer updates, but that didn't solve the problem. Moreover, the dealers had no clue how to service or repair the vehicle. The first two oil changes they did not reset the oil life in the computer, and when I asked, they just proceeded to mash my accelerator into the floor and push buttons. It took me googling the procedures to show them how to reset. At 18k miles, I began to notice a rough idle, but the dealership told me that it was normal. At 19k, I began to get check engine lights, and each time, I got the I was informed that the technician had other vehicles to attend to before mine. I was a bit confused as to why I had dropped it off in the first place. Unfortunately, it took almost a month for the car to be repaired, which was quite a significant engine repair for a vehicle with less than 20k miles and just over a year old. In the end, I decided to trade the jeep. If you are considering the diesel option, I would recommend doing some research on the service bulletin and the potential repairs that may be needed. It's important to be comfortable with the cost of any significant overhaul that may be required.

Hi there! I recently purchased a GC Laredo 4.7L second-hand and unfortunately ran into some trouble with the transfer case. After seeing the service 4wd message on my dashboard, I took it to the Jeep dealer where they diagnosed the issue and informed me that the transfer case was bad. While the cost of a remanufactured Chrysler NV245 transfer case was quite high at $3,500, I was able to find a used one from a transmission shop. However, a few weeks later, the electric motor of the transfer case went bad. Despite my frustration, I reached out to Chrysler to express my concerns and was informed that transfer case replacements are expected after 100,000 miles. It's worth noting that I had a 1997 Honda CRV with over 297,000 miles and never experienced any transfer case issues. Thanks for listening!

I read these reviews, and like with most reviews, there are good and bad ones. I bought my Jeep in May 11th, and after 3 weeks, I started having issues with check engine lights, shifting, and acceleration. I had it looked at by 3 different places, and finally took it to the Jeep Dealership. They replaced a transmission sensor, which cost me $1600 and was not covered by my warranty. Unfortunately, 3 weeks after I got it back, I was driving down the interstate during rush hour, going 65mph, when I tried to speed up to exit the interstate. Suddenly, the Jeep jumped so hard that I thought I had hit something. It had shifted itself into 2nd gear while I was going 65mph, and I had to pull over to avoid oncoming traffic. Now, the service department says it's the 2nd gear ratio and valve cover. This is a very dangerous situation and not worth the risk!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Jeep. I bought it new and it has been amazing! I have taken it through mud, mountains, rocks, washes, desert, snow, and even used it for hunting. The best part is that I have never gotten stuck! It gets 19/22 miles per gallon and in the 7 years that I have owned it, I have only had to spend less than $500 on maintenance (not including tires, brakes, and oil changes). However, I am now facing some repairs such as the transmission, CV's, A/C, power windows, water pump, cruise control, and new tires. I know it can be expensive to get these things fixed, but I still love my Jeep and think it's worth it. Thanks for listening!
