The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common 2003 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee, several common problems have been reported:

  • Powertrain Concerns: While powertrain issues are relatively few compared to airbag problems, some drivers have reported difficulties with shifting, such as the vehicle shifting into reverse on its own. These issues are crucial as they can affect the driving experience and safety of the vehicle.
  • Structural Integrity: Despite being a twenty-year-old SUV, the 2003 Grand Cherokee has generally held up well structurally. • Oil Leaks: Owners have commonly reported oil leaks with the 2003 Grand Cherokee. While this is typical for a vehicle of its age, it can still be a nuisance and may require regular monitoring and maintenance to prevent any significant issues related to oil leakage.
  • Emissions Problems: Some owners have experienced emissions-related problems with the 2003 Grand Cherokee. Emissions issues can impact the vehicle's environmental impact and overall performance, making it crucial to address them promptly to ensure compliance with regulations and optimal engine function.

  • VIN: 1J4GW58N43C
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: 2 recalls have not been taken care of by the manufacturer. I purchased this vehicle 2 years ago and have noticed that the seats do indeed over heat. The airbags haven't deployed thankfully, but I'm not comfortable taking any chances. Do I have to pay a dealer to complete these repairs? Also, since I have had this vehicle, my blinkers and brake lights do not work consistently. They were in operable for almost a month. I had a Mechanix check them, and they said they were dine. Homer's auto shop florence oregon) I didn't drive at night for almost a month. Then my blinkers just started working again. All the fuses are fine, and no other electrical issues. Brake lights started working also. Up until 3 days ago, a driver behind me pulled around next to me at the stop light to tell me the brake light was out. I checked it when I got home and it was fine.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-20
  • VIN: 1J8GW68J23C
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: While driving at low speed, the side curtain airbags deployed along with the front seat belts. No injuries just stunted by the loud bang. I took car to Jeep dealership to have recall R06/15v-046 repaired and to diagnose cause of side curtain airbags deployment. Dealer would not repair recall R06/15v-046 due to the requirement that the side curtain and seat belts be repaired before making the recall repairs. Side curtain airbags repair was not accomplished because some repair parts are no longer available (seatbelts/headliner). Dealer indicated that, even if they could have repaired side curtain airbags that the cost of the side curtain airbags repair would be on me. Dealer charged me for a diagnostic of side curtain airbags deployment. I feel that the manufacturer is responsible for the defects and are responsible for restitution. Subject car has airbags light on know but not beforehand. What is my recourse now that my car is unsafe with no repair available and of little value?

2003 Jeep Grand cherokee recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 10 recalls for different components of the 2003 Jeep Grand cherokee.

2015-01-28
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured January 9, 2001, to March 28, 2003, 2002-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 13, 2001, to May 23 2003, and 2003-2004 Dodge Viper vehicles manufactured November 1, 2001, to June 30, 2004. Due to electrical noise beyond the tolerance of the air bag electronic control module (ECM), a component in the ECM may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.
  • Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler dealers will replace the air bag control module and side impact sensors as required, free of charge. This recall remedy was applied during earlier recall campaigns of these vehicles under safety recalls 12V527 and 13V040. All owners that have not had the recall repair performed under safety recalls 12V527 or 13V040 are strongly encouraged to have it performed and not wait for the final remedy to be deployed to the field. The recall began on December 29, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R06.

  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install a supplemental jumper harness to the airbag control module, free of charge. The remedy for affected Grand Cherokee vehicles is expected to be available later in the year. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.

Negative 2003 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

As someone who used to love Jeeps, I have to say that I've had some issues with the steering on long trips. It tends to drift quite a bit, which can be a safety hazard. I've owned four previous Jeeps and after just three weeks of owning my current one, I've had to take it on six trips from Florida to Illinois. While the steering is fine for in-town driving, it's definitely not ideal for long trips. Additionally, the rear-end whines quite a bit, and even though I had it replaced at 3,000 miles, there was no improvement. I'm currently considering the Kia Sorento as an alternative. If anyone else has experienced similar issues with the steering, please feel free to email me at [email protected].

We had a less than ideal experience with this car. Unfortunately, we encountered some issues such as warped brake rotors, malfunctioning air conditioning, and a faulty fan relay. Additionally, we experienced some minor issues such as a burned-out fog light indicator, a malfunctioning power outlet, and a seatbelt that failed to retract. The car also had some handling issues and the tilting steering wheel was not very stable. Based on our experience, we would not recommend purchasing a used Jeep Grand Cherokee. We hope this feedback is helpful.

I purchased my Jeep GC Laredo 6 years ago, and unfortunately, I have experienced several issues with it. The lifters were replaced shortly after purchase, and since then, I have had trouble with the hood staying up, the passenger window not working, and the cooling fan failing multiple times. Despite replacing the relay for the fan at least 6 times, the radiator once, and rewiring the last fan, it has failed again, leaving me unsure of what to do. Additionally, the headlights and parking lights have started flashing with no keys in the ignition, and the heat only blows out of the defrost. I have also had to replace the tie rod ends, and the A/C does not work. While I have had a frustrating experience with this vehicle, I am confident in my decision to not purchase another one.

We purchased our 03 out of state at Crest in NH with approximately 60 thousand miles on it. Unfortunately, we have experienced several issues with the vehicle, including faulty hoses, a replaced radiator, a replaced passenger door window mechanism, multiple instances of interior lights not working, AC/Heater only coming out of the window vent, rust on the back wheel well, a cooling fan that just went out, a hood that doesn't stay open, seals on all doors leaking water when it rains, and replaced shocks. Regrettably, the vehicle broke down during a test drive today. We are confident that we can address these issues and get the vehicle back on the road soon.

  5. Charles Monahan 2024-08-17

The reliability of the vehicle has been most disappointing. Despite numerous attempts by the shop, the problem of the vehicle not cranking has persisted five or six times in the last year. Additionally, the passenger window became stuck in the down position last week, resulting in a costly $500 repair. Such issues are unacceptable for a vehicle that is less than four years old. In the future, I will be exploring other makes and models.

It's unfortunate that Chrysler discontinued the 4.0 liter engine, but I'm glad to hear that yours is still running perfectly after 115,000K. I've owned two Cherokees myself and I absolutely love them. The fit and finish is good, and the styling is what I like best - it just looks great. The A/C still blows very cold and the stereo is wonderful. The power leather seats are also very comfortable on long trips, although I do wish the fuel economy was a little better. Overall, it's a great SUV at a fantastic price.

I hope this message finds you well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Jeep. I purchased it brand new back in October of 2002 and I have to say, it has been an absolute joy to own. I have only had to take it in for a seat warmer recall, but other than that, it has been smooth sailing. Even with 63,000 miles on it, the original tires and brakes still have plenty of wear left. This is actually my second Jeep and I have to say, it is a fantastic vehicle. It has lots of pep and is incredibly comfortable. I highly recommend it!

  3. Kyle Schimmel 2024-10-20

I recently upgraded from my 1999 Dakota to a Laredo with the 4.0 engine. Surprisingly, the 4.0 feels more powerful and efficient than the 5.2 V8 in my Dodge. When comparing the starting prices of the Trailblazer and Envoy to the Jeep, you'll find that the Jeep offers more quality features for your money. Let's be honest, while the Trailblazer may have a nice name, it doesn't compare to the Jeep's prowess off-road. Nobody beats a Jeep!

  4. Jessy Heidenreich 2024-09-28

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my third jeep. Overall, I've really enjoyed everything about it, but I have noticed that the windshield can be a bit tricky to keep clean, especially in rainy weather. Additionally, some passengers have mentioned that the jeep tends to rock from side to side on rough pavement. Have you experienced anything similar? Let me know your thoughts!

  5. Nicolas Kerluke 2024-09-17

This is my 3rd Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's great to hear that you're enjoying the spaciousness and easy handling that an SUV is supposed to offer. After trying out the competition, it's clear that you've found the best value for your money with this vehicle.
