Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

I WENT ONTO IWANTMOPAR.COM, A FCA DEALERSHIP (MCGOVERN CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM ON 777 WASHINGTON ST, NEWTON, MA 02460), AND ORDERED SIX INJECTOR SHIELDS AND AN INSULATOR BLANKET TO REPLACE THE ONE THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY ON MY JEEP. THREE WEEK PASSED AND I RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM THEM REFUSING TO SELL ME THE RECALL PARTS, STATING THAT MY JEEP HAD THESE PARTS ALREADY. This Jeep has been a reliable vehicle for me since I purchased it in 2005 with 54,000 miles. It now has 101,000 miles and still drives great, handling corners like a sports car. On the highway, it gets around 18-20 miles per gallon. Although I have had some issues with blown speakers, heated seats, power steering pump, driveline seal, and some interior parts, overall, this Jeep has impressed me. It still looks brand new and turns heads when I'm driving it. While I may not purchase another Jeep due to the reliability issues, I am confident in recommending this vehicle to others.

Hey there! I've been driving my Jeep for 5 years now and have put around 40,000 miles on it. The total mileage is now 110,000. I've spent approximately $4500 on upkeep, including replacing the batteries twice. I think it's pretty good, only about $75 a month for upkeep. The engine and drive train are definitely the strong points of my Jeep, but the electronics can be a bit of a weak point. However, I can attribute even the electronics problems to wear and tear. Overall, I'm really happy with my Jeep!

This is a great vehicle that you can rely on. Auto repair shops highly recommend it for its excellent track record with minimal problems. It has excellent 4X4 characteristics, which I find very useful when driving in the Colorado Mountains where I live at 9300 feet. The handling is amazing and the bumps in the road are hardly noticeable.

Hey there! As one of the few, I can say that brakes haven't been a major issue for me. Actually, up until a few months ago, I had no complaints at all. Sadly, it now seems that at 47K, I need a major engine overhaul. The coolant level warning light comes on once a month, and even though the dealer has inspected the entire system, no external leaks have been found. This leaves only one possibility.

This car has several issues that require a recall, particularly with the power windows. The popping noise followed by the windows going down and not coming back up until fixed is a common problem. I have had to replace two windows at a cost of over $300. Additionally, the brakes are currently acting up, as mentioned in previous reviews. While I generally like the car, improvements must be made to address these issues.

It's comforting to know that I'm not alone in experiencing these problems. Recently, I had to replace the governor sensor, solenoid, and a snap ring, which cost me $650 at an independent mechanic. I've had to rebuild the engine cooling system, replace the radiator, water pump, and (2) cooling fans. Additionally, I've had to rebuild the brakes twice. Unfortunately, every window regulator has broken at least 5 times on various windows, and I'm unable to fix the passenger rear window. Living beachside has caused the vehicle to rust through the roof in just 2 years, resulting in the loss of the moon roof and a cracked windshield. It's truly unbelievable!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 01 Limited that I bought back in 2007 with 100K miles. It was in great condition and I've been really happy with it. Even now, at 140K miles, I've only had to replace a starter and window motor. It runs like a dream and has great pick up. The only downside is that the heated seats don't work, but for the price I paid ($9000), I can't really complain. Overall, I'm really impressed with how smooth it drives!

I purchased my 2001 Jeep GC Limited six months ago with only 36k miles on it. I was able to get a great deal on it for $10,450. Although I experienced a few issues, the dealer was able to take care of them for the most part and it seems to be a reliable truck. The heated seats were not functioning when I bought it, but the dealer was kind enough to take $1000 off the price. Unfortunately, the night I drove it off the lot, the heat went out and I had to take it back to the dealer. They had to replace a door in the HVAC system. A month later, the ABS light came on and stopped working. It turned out to be a bad speed sensor, but the dealer paid 50% of the cost. However, on my way to the dealer to drop it off for the ABS, the heat went out again. It was a different door in the HVAC system.
