The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Additionally, the volume has randomly increased or decreased, making it hard to hear important sounds from the environment, such as sirens or horns from other vehicles. Had this occurred in a moment in which I needed to react quickly an accident could have occurred or my safety could have been compromised. Moreover, if the radio has inadvertently changed to an unrecognized function—like activating the Bluetooth or starting a call—this has been distracting pulling my attention away from the road in multiple scenarios. The vehicle has made unsolicited calls to emergency personnel which is both a distraction to me and an inconvenience to emergency personnel. Overall, the delaminating screen not only complicates my driving experience but also poses a significant safety risk to myself and others on the road. Addressing the issue promptly is essential to ensure a safe driving environment. I have tried to address this problem with Jeep directly via Uconnect and have been informed that they do not believe this to be a concern that requires addressing. The problem has been diagnosed by a Jeep dealer and has been confirmed by Uconnect directly. Additionally, the problem has occurred in multiple other Jeep vehicles.

- Summary: Jeep uses a transmission manufactured by ZF. Jeep claims the transmission is "filled for life" and does not require any maintenance, and never requires the oil to be changed. ZF recommends the oil be changed every 50-75,000 miles. Many other car manufacturers that utilize ZF transmissions recommend that same interval. In fact, if you push Jeep to change your transmission oil, they suggest it will void your warranty. Preventative maintenance in the form of a transmission fluid change is necessary for the health and longevity of the vehicle. Jeep is negligent in this matter. When your transmission fails, you are thrust into "limp" mode, capping your speed at 15-20 mph. This occurred to me on the highway. I narrowly avoided being rear ended in traffic traveling 65+ mph. My car has been babied, all factory recommended services have been done in a timely manner, I was not having any issues with the car at the time, and there were no symptoms, warning lights, etc at the time.

- Summary: While driving, all the light on the dashboard come on. When this happens the speedometer is not working the windshield wipers come on. The emergency brake light is on, the car shifts out of gear and the turning signals don't work and the hazard lights won't work. This is all happening at the same time. I'm unable to inform people on the road that I'm in distress because my hazard light won't work I don't know how fast or slow I'm going. I can't inform the people on the road that I want to change lanes. Then after a while all the lights on the dashboard would go out and the check engine light would remain on for maybe two days and than go out. This problem has been going on since January I have paid thousands of dollars attempting to get this problem fixed. - Summary: I bought a 2018 jeep grand Cherokee limited on July 1,2024. A week after owning the vehicle the jeep kept shutting off while driving on the interstate and the dash said “ put in P and push to start” none of the hazard lights came on. It just automatically shut off in the middle of traffic multiple times and when put into park and tried to restart it would take several attempts. This is unsafe and I’m lucky I did not get into an accident since the vehicle is just turning off while I’m driving on a busy highway not to mention almost getting into an accident since I’m given no warning. I dropped off my jeep at the dealership and they have had it for two weeks stating they can not find any issues with the vehicle. This is frustrating and scary and do not even feel comfortable driving a the jeep that I owned for one week. I have read several complaints in the same issue and k won’t seems to be able to find what is causing this issue.

- Summary: Car dealer said that they already fixed the recalled issue. But we took car to the dealer also for car overheating in very short distances and the car only has about 67,300 miles. The dealer said that they "found stored DTC in PCM" P0304(Cylinder #4 Misfire). "There are combustion gases in cooling system." They said the car needed cylinder head replacement and engine replacement quoting me $8001.88 for repairs which I could not pay. The car has only been driven locally. We also suspect that this car may have been damaged by hurricane Michael in Florida in 2018 and damage may have not been reported. Car was bought in Florida in approx. September 2018 by owner 1 who sold the car to owner 2 with only approx. 2500mi after Hurricane Michael (Oct 9-10th). The car was sold to owner 2 in November 2018 in Florida then brought to California in 2021 and sold to owner 3 who is making this report. Or car may have already presented mechanical issues that may not been reported. Car has only been driven locally.

The crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate, causing the engine to lose its ability to synchronize the fuel injector pulses and cam shaft timing, possibly resulting in an engine stall.

- Remedy: Dealers will update the powertrain control module software to maintain vehicle propulsion, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 3, 2023. Some owner notification letters were mailed October 31, 2023. - Consequence: Fuel starvation may result in an unexpected loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the HPFP, and inspect and replace, if necessary, additional fuel system components, free of charge. - Consequence: A vehicle that starts and shifts out of Park without applying the brake pedal can result in vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash without prior warning and/or injury to others outside of the vehicle.
- Remedy: The remedy includes updated HCU/ABS module software that prevents the HCU/ABS module from falsely reading pressure in the primary circuit. FCA has decided to do a two-Phase Campaign remedy schedule. Phase 1 began November 17, 2022. Phase 2 begin date has not been determined yet. - Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with the 3.0L EcoDiesel engines. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler may crack and allow pre-heated vaporized coolant to enter the EGR system. This mixture may combust inside the intake manifold.
- Consequence: Combustion in the intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will replace the EGR cooler, free of charge. Dealers will also inspect and, as necessary, replace the intake manifold. Parts are not currently available. Owners were mailed an interim notification on December 21, 2021. A second notification will be mailed when parts are available, currently expected to be around March 11, 2021. The recall began March 11, 2021. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.
- Consequence: If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

Gas mileage isn't too good, but it's a really fun ride. The brakes work well, and I chose the color Velvet Red, which is a deep burgundy. I've owned mine since Mar. '18, and I absolutely love it!

I recently purchased a 2018 and decided to go with the Overland instead of the Trailhawk. I preferred the extra luxury features over the off-road capabilities. Although I won't be doing much 4x4ing, I believe the Overland will suit my needs. Overall, I'm happy with my decision, but unfortunately, there is an annoying rattle in the driver's side door. I have contacted the dealer and they have agreed to fix it if possible.

I leased this vehicle in 2018 and I just bought it after the lease. I love this car, it's beautiful and the color is just right. I got the white with the black 20 inch wheels and put red caliper covers on it, and people thought I had an SRT. The vehicle is highly dependable, which is exactly what I needed. Overall, I am very satisfied with this one.

I have owned a Mercedes S 65 which cost $148,000. It was a very nice first-class car. I also owned a Porsche Cayenne GTS which cost $125,000. Again, it was a nice quality SUV. However, I got bored with it in just 2 years. This Jeep SRT is a man's car which costs $70,000. It is just as powerful, if not more powerful, and has full-size tires which give it a more masculine feeling compared to low-profile tires. The exhaust system has a powerful sound! It's not a 'soccer mom's' car. I drive my Jeep and it is indestructible even at 20,000 miles with no service except for an oil change.

Although I appreciate the design and value of my second Grand Cherokee, I have unfortunately experienced several issues that prevent me from giving it a positive rating. Despite these setbacks, I remain confident in the quality of the vehicle's foundation. However, I have encountered a major electrical failure within the first two months of ownership, which took three trips to the dealer and a month without use to resolve. The root cause was eventually traced to a poor canon plug during production. Additionally, I have experienced two rear seatbelt failures and a software corruption issue that required the replacement of the Uconnect screen. While I have also encountered some issues with the reliability of the Apple CarPlay, I remain optimistic that these issues can be resolved. Overall, I believe that the Grand Cherokee has great potential, but improvements are needed in the electronics department to ensure greater reliability.

This is my 3rd Jeep Laredo and unfortunately, I have found that the start-stop feature is not to my liking. It immediately turns the Jeep off when stopped, even if stopped at a stop sign for less than 1 second. While I understand the intention behind this feature, I find it unnecessary and always turn it off. Additionally, the Unconnect feature could use some improvement as it defaults to the beginning after the Jeep has been turned off, which can be frustrating when trying to resume listening to a book on tape. Despite these issues, I still believe that Jeep produces high-quality vehicles and I am confident that they will continue to innovate and improve their features in the future. The owners manual could benefit from a more user-friendly layout, but it does contain important safety information that should not be overlooked.

I initially enjoyed my vehicle, but after purchasing it used with 30,000 miles, I noticed an issue with the radio screen. It turns out that this is a common problem with Jeeps, known as the 'delaminating screen' issue. Despite the fact that I paid $29,000 for the vehicle, which included extras such as heated seats and navigation, Chrysler/Jeep refuses to fix the issue because I am the second owner. They claim that it is company policy to only fix this issue for the first owner. However, I am confident that this is an issue that should be addressed regardless of ownership status. The cost to replace the screen is $1500, which is an unreasonable expense for a problem that is not my fault. As a result, I am unable to use the radio and am constantly distracted by a screen that pops up asking if I want to change phone settings. This distraction is dangerous while driving. Additionally, the navigation system is unreliable, resetting itself to the address I happen to be passing by at any given moment. The radio also randomly calls people in my contact list, which is frustrating and distracting. The check engine light has been on for months due to an emissions leak, and although I replaced the recommended part, the light continues to come back on. Despite these issues, I remain confident that this is a high-quality vehicle that should function properly.

In December 2017, I traded in my old car and purchased a brand new 2018 Grand Cherokee Altitude. Unfortunately, the car has been unreliable over the last 5 years. Despite having only 40K miles, I have had to have the following work done outside of regular maintenance: a new battery (at 19K miles), a new steering wheel (as the heated steering has never worked), a check engine light (due to torn hoses), a new touch screen (as it completely delaminated), and most recently a new radiator, thermostat, and hoses - all before my 6-year financing was up. However, I was lucky enough to have purchased an extended warranty during the sales process, which covered the cost of these repairs. Although it is unfortunate that Jeep's quality has declined, I still love the Jeep brand. My brother drives my old 2003 Grand Cherokee and my dad has a 2004 Wrangler, both of which have had fewer issues than my car. I guess having a car for 5 years without any issues is too much to ask for, but I am grateful for the extended warranty that has helped me through these problems.

I test drove three different SUVs: the Honda Pilot, the Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Grand Cherokee. After trying them all, the Grand Cherokee was the clear winner for me. I did my research on Edmonds.com and found that the 3.6 V6 Pentax engine was perfect for my driving style. Although there is one feature in the car that I haven't used yet - the automatic shut off when coming to a stop and holding the brake pedal - I appreciate the potential gas savings. I also find the leather seats to be very comfortable with excellent lumbar support. The display screen is intuitive and easy to use, and the hatchback electronic feature is a great addition. Basic maintenance is a breeze with this car, as it is easy to access the oil drain without having to jack it up. Living in an area with snow, I am confident that the Jeep will get me out and prevent me from missing work due to weather conditions.
