Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

The Pentastar oil filter housing used in these vehicles can crack and warp due to heat exposure and this can lead to serious oil leaks. Despite knowing about this issue, the company has never issued a recall, instead, they have discontinued the production of the Pentastar and redesigned the oil filter housing for newer vehicle models. This oil filter housing is prone to so many issues mainly because it is made from plastic, not a metal that can withstand high engine temperatures. My mechanic is replacing the plastic housing now with an Aluminum one that will withstand the heat and pressure needed to hold up. He told me that it has been a major issue for several years now and he has personally changed several of these out over the years. At one point he said it was such a big issue that he couldn't get parts to repair numerous vehicles that ended up sitting in his lot for a long time until parts become available. Everything I read online suggests that this is a major issue and one that people can't understand why Jeep has not been ordered to recall the wrongly designed housing. The safety issue on this one is potential breakdowns on highways where oil will make roadways slick and cpould also start an oil fire when oil starts to spray on the hot engine. Stranded cars will be parked on the sides of the road posing a risk to them and the other cars on the roads as well I didn't even know about the issue or that mine was failing until I had it in the shop to replace a leaking motor mount. It was during this work that they noticed the issue with the housing and told us that we need to replace it very soon. We decided to change it out and incur another 650.00 in repairs.

At 103k miles !Jeep has done nothing other than tell me sorry that will be $15,000 to repair. My engine is doing that loud clicking sound everyone is talking about. I’ve spoken with countless people this has happened to, some as early as 49k miles. There are videos online of mechanics bragging about how much money these engines are making them in repairs. Yet Stellantis still refuses to take responsibility for their 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine issues. Even though there is a current class action against them for it. There are full YouTube videos from mechanics explaining exactly why the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine fails and still Stellantis chooses to take more money from consumers to fix/replace their faulty engine. Now onto functionality of my vehicle, the start/stop engine problems I see people complaining about on here are real. The first thing I did when I got into my car was turn OFF my start/stop system. 20% of the time my system worked properly when left on. The rest of the time it was dangerous. The car would shut off when hitting the breaks and stall. I would be stuck on the freeway having to restart my car. I’m lucky it never caused an accident but it is terrifying being in the middle of the street and your car just shutting off and engaging the parking break and stuck in neutral. It’s happened more times than I can count, stop lights were where my car shut off most commonly. Usually would result in cars honking and people screaming to get out of the way while I scramble to get my car to turn back on. Over all, I’m so disappointed in this company and how it chooses to treat its consumers.. I was forever a Jeep owner until this week.

The event is when towing a trailer and reversing the car will see the trailer as an obstruction and will engage the brakes. The car is alleged to have an automatic system that when towing is supposed to turn the parking assist sensors off to prevent the event occuring. If that system isn't present there is a button that should allow you to turn the parking system off which it does for about two seconds and start backing up the trailer, then it will automatically turn back on and see the trailer and lock the brakes up which is jarring and startling to say the least. I am fairly certain this could cause an accident if it hasn't already.

- Summary: Bought my Jeep used in Sept 2023. For the first time hooked it up to my small trailer to pick something up. Pulled around and went to reverse and the rear park assist braking jammed on. At first I wasn't concerned. I knew there was a way to turn them off based on my jeep manual. Unfortunately, the park assist would not turn off. Neither the park assist button on dash nor the settings in the computer screen would turn them off. The light on the dash button would turn on for 2 seconds but then turn right back off. In the computer settings , I would click the rear park assist to uncheck it. It would uncheck for a few seconds then check mark would come right back again. I tried to turn off the front park assist in the computer just to see what would happen. I can't turn those off either. This is extremely dangerous. I was very lucky I discovered this before I left my property. What if I was in a busy place, road, parking lot, etc. So I do have an appt with my dealer tomorrow, who claims to have never heard of this issue before. . But after doing simple google searches on the internet, I found numerous instances of many Mopar vehicles, like my Jeep GC, Dodge Durango, Chrysler Pacifica, etc. who have had the same exact issue when they try to tow something and cannot turn off the Park Assist feature to back up with a trailer attached. I also called the FCA US Customer Service line to tell them about this and they said they had never heard of this problem. Yet in the many forums I found where people have posted about this issue, they have had to get software update done on the Park assist module to fix this issue. So it is known, but FCA is not admitting to it being an issue. This should be a recall, or if nothing else, considered a necessary upgrade. Also found you have a report in your system already on this issue and I found a Jeep service bulletin related to this issue as well. I will see what the dealer says tomorrow.

- Summary: Issue with transmission/transmission control module. Jeep has a hard time shifting from Reverse, after 3 tries the gear is lost and vehicle must be shut down in order to try again. Once engaged, it'll "BANG" loudly, cause the tires to squeal, and then reverse is granted. Also have an issue going between 3rd and 4th gears. To shift, we have to increase pressure in the transmission, sometimes getting the RPM up to 6k before shifting is allowed. After three unsuccessful attempts, all gears are lost and you have to get down to 33 mph in order to gain 3rd gear back or you have to pull over and restart the vehicle.

- Summary: While driving on the freeway, in the fast lane, with children in the car the car lost all ability to accelerate, and lights came on. We had to coast to the side of the road and stop the car on the shoulder. We were almost hit while stuck there waiting for a tow truck. Nothing in the car worked, we were lucky to get one car window down as it was 103 degrees. We couldn't get out of the car bc we had two toddlers in car seats and no where safe to go. So we sat there praying and called family to come get us since we couldn't get kids into tow truck. Towed car to jeep and jeep wouldn't even look at it bc they were 3 weeks out diagnosis so we towed to closest mechanic and spent 2k to replace fuel pump. No warning lights messages or symptoms before. 6 months later the car started to shake when turned on and we took it to local mechanic who said I hope you have an extended warranty since jeep has known problems with cylinders and gaskets. We immediately took it to Jeep who said the head cylinders were blown and it was leaking. The car only has 60,000 miles so to have a terrifying situation on the freeway and then issues with the engine was equally scary when it is our family car.

(IF it was a hotter day out and the moon roof was opened all that glass would've exploded and could've injured the driver or even lead to the driver to cause an accident. -not that i have heard of while getting this repaired. -not yet, i'm working on getting a claim done. -no warning that the moonroof glass was going to explode
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

- Summary: Transmission or transmission control module issue. Vehicle has an issue shifting between 3rd and 4th gears on a regular basis. Vehicle also does not shift into reverse at times and the R light just flashes. When vehicle finally shifts it jolts the vehicle very hard into gear. I have heard of multiple people with this same model vehicle having this same issue.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2017 Jeep Grand cherokee.

- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Ram 1500 and 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.0L Diesel engines. The crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate, causing the engine to lose its ability to synchronize the fuel injector pulses and cam shaft timing, possibly resulting in an engine stall.
- Consequence: An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will update the powertrain control module software to maintain vehicle propulsion, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed August 3, 2023. Some owner notification letters were mailed October 31, 2023. The remaining owner notification letters will be mailed at a future date, anticipated July 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 66A. This recall is an expansion of recall 20V-475.

- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 2014-2019 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with 3.0L diesel engines. A high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure may introduce internal debris into the fuel system, potentially resulting in fuel starvation.
- Consequence: Fuel starvation may result in an unexpected loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the HPFP, and inspect and replace, if necessary, additional fuel system components, free of charge. Interim notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed July 21, 2022. Owner notification letters for were mailed for Jeep Grand Cherokee owners starting January 11, 2024. Owner notification letters for Ram 1500 owners were mailed March 7, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLS's number for this recall is Z46.

- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with the 3.0L EcoDiesel engines. The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler may crack and allow pre-heated vaporized coolant to enter the EGR system. This mixture may combust inside the intake manifold.
- Consequence: Combustion in the intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will replace the EGR cooler, free of charge. Dealers will also inspect and, as necessary, replace the intake manifold. Parts are not currently available. Owners were mailed an interim notification on December 21, 2021. A second notification will be mailed when parts are available, currently expected to be around March 11, 2021. The recall began March 11, 2021. Owners may contact FCA US LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US LLC's number for this recall is W79.

- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.
- Consequence: If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

- Summary: Accessible Technologies, Inc. (ATI) is recalling certain ProCharger Superchargers, model numbers AB037A-100, AB037A-100P, and A037A-100B, sold for installation on 2012-2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 and SRT vehicles. The supercharger mounting bracket may contact and damage the ABS line, possibly resulting in a brake fluid leak.
- Consequence: A brake fluid leak may lengthen the distance needed to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: ATI will notify owners and will replace the supercharger brackets, free of charge. The recall began on December 12, 2017. Owners may contact ATI customer service at 1-913-338-2886.

- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee manufactured August 8, 2016 through August 16, 2016. In the affected vehicles, the rear tow hook bracket or tow eye bracket may be loose.
- Consequence: If the tow bracket is loose, the bracket may detach from the vehicle while being it is being driven, possibly becoming a road hazard. If the bracket detaches during a vehicle recovery, there may be a loss of control of the towed vehicle. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will confirm both tow hook bracket bolts are properly tightened, free of charge. The recall began on October 31, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S73.

I couldn't help but wonder after reading some of the other reviews. This is actually my second Grand Cherokee, having upgraded from a 2015 GC Laredo which my daughter and son-in-law are currently driving with over 50,000 miles and no issues. The positives are that it has a smooth ride with more than adequate acceleration, a very comfortable and luxurious interior, and the 4WD works great when I need it. I've even used it to pull out some trees at my ranch and the rhino (color and name) didn't even flinch. I absolutely love driving it. The only negative is that the Uconnect system can be a bit buggy when connecting with the app. I need to start it up every time I get in the vehicle and sometimes my Pandora or Slacker apps will just stop. The iHeart app also won't connect to many stations. It's hard to believe that this type of vehicle was not equipped with Android Auto. However, these are minor issues that are easily remedied by playing off my phone's Bluetooth or listening to my USB which has almost 5000 songs. I love this vehicle and plan to keep it for a long while. It's been almost 4 years now and my wife has even taken a liking to the Rhino and is using it as her daily driver. With over 50,000 miles, it still runs like a champ and idles so smoothly that I sometimes forget it's on.Aside from maintenance and the very minor previous issues (Uconnect, one squeaky mirror), the only thing you have had to do is replace the tires. Love it!!

I've always owned 4x4 trucks, but I recently purchased a 2017 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk for better gas mileage. Living in the mountains, I often drive down mud/gravel roads with occasional snow. Recently, we experienced historic levels of snow in the Santa Cruz mountains. I drove through 3-4ft of powder in Snow Mode (off road 2) for miles on ridgetop precipices, and it was like driving a snowmobile. This experience only adds to the already 5-star review I would give this vehicle on all levels. It goes through mud like a truck, rock climbs, etc. but also looks amazing cleaned up. The handling is excellent on windy mountain roads, and the acceleration is quick. The interior is luxurious, and mine is fully loaded with leather and spacers, which enables bigger off-road tires. I love it and will keep it, but I will also get a truck again.

I really appreciate this Jeep. The 8.4 Nav screen and radio system are fantastic and very user-friendly. They worked perfectly right off the lot! The menus inside are intelligently laid out.

Hi there! I recently had to lease a new car and decided to go with the Jeep Overland model. It had all the options I was looking for, especially the safety features which were a top priority for me. However, I did notice a few issues with the car. The auto restart feature caused some power loss or over acceleration, and the transmission shifted quite hard at times. Additionally, the heated seats didn't seem to work properly and the outside temperature gauge appeared to be faulty. Despite these issues, I'm still hopeful that things will improve and I'm looking forward to enjoying my new car. Thanks for listening!

I have owned 6 Jeep Grand Cherokees in the past and when my last one had a head gasket issue at just over 200,000 miles, I decided to purchase a certified preowned 2017 model. However, I have been disappointed with the design of this car and after just two weeks, I am already looking for a replacement. The engine hum is excessively loud, causing discomfort especially at low speeds. The radio sound quality is poor and the hands-free feature is practically unusable. The UConnect system intermittently flips back to the phone and shuts off. Additionally, the controls for important features such as the radio and climate control require multiple steps and the information displayed is too small to read comfortably. The interior design lacks storage space for everyday items such as phones, change, and lipstick. The storage on the doors is too narrow and deep, making it difficult to retrieve anything placed inside. The seats are also hard and uncomfortable. The car has failed to start every morning and has required a jump start every day since I brought it home. Despite the dealer's efforts, the issue remains unresolved. The aerodynamics of the car are also poor, creating an echo chamber effect. This is the first car in 54 years of driving and more than 30 years of owning Jeeps that I have disliked. I am already shopping for a replacement vehicle, as I spend an average of 4 hours a day in a car and I find myself dreading getting into this one.

At 90,000 miles, unfortunately, one of the valves failed which cost me $1,200 to repair. However, the car is otherwise good. The brakes are a typical mopar (meaning they shake when you hit the pedal).

The vehicle experienced difficulty starting in the garage, which may have been caused by RFI from the connected garage door opener. Despite the issue being reported by multiple individuals, including myself, the dealership was unable to provide a solution after 14 visits in 18 months. While the Uconnect system had some connectivity issues resulting in dropped calls, the Hemi engine provided an enjoyable driving experience. It is worth noting that the engine requires mid-grade gasoline and has a fuel economy of 20mpg. Overall, the vehicle's performance is commendable despite the challenges faced.

In 2017, I purchased a new Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the cold weather package during Labor Day weekend. As a resident of ND, I deemed it necessary to have a block heater. Unfortunately, I encountered a few issues with the vehicle. The heater motor/blower unit started having trouble in October, only 40 days after purchase and under 3000 miles. During the first snowstorm of the year, I was unable to defrost my front windshield. Although it was replaced under warranty, it took two different dealerships and a customer complaint to resolve the issue. Another issue I faced was with the factory autostart, which had extremely poor range and was not starting the vehicle. I was informed that after three consecutive starts, it automatically disables itself from being started until you are inside the vehicle. However, this was happening every other time I tried to start it, not after three starts. The dealership informed me that they couldn't recreate either issue and that it was operating as designed. Currently, I am dealing with a third issue where the vehicle will randomly shut off while driving. The engine shuts off, and all exterior lights/dash go out without any prior warning or indication of an issue. This issue left me stranded, and I had to tow it to the dealership at the end of January 2018. Although the manufacturer claims to care for my safety, they won't admit that this is unsafe to drive. I have tried working with the dealership and Jeep's customer resolution team, but so far, I have received nothing but misinformation and bully tactics from both parties. Unfortunately, I am unable to file for a Lemon buyback because they are all considered separate issues. The North Dakota Lemon Law needs an update, and the Chrysler Fiat program could be better. However, I remain confident that a resolution will be reached soon.If these issues were resolved, it would be a great vehicle. The stress from the repairs is due to the incompetence of the dealerships and poor customer service by the manufacturer. This experience has led me to decide not to purchase another Chrysler Fiat product in the future.
