1997 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common 1997 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 1997 is known for several common problems that have been reported by its owners. These issues include erratic electronic shifting, a stalling engine, alternator failure, and ignition switch malfunction.

Erratic electronic shifting is a significant issue in the 1997 Grand Cherokee, which can cause the vehicle to be stuck in 'park' or 'neutral' despite shifting gears. This problem is due to a manufacturing error that results in a loose electrical connection in the brake transmission shift interlock solenoid.

Another common problem in the 1997 Grand Cherokee is a stalling engine while driving. This issue can be caused by various factors, including faulty wiring, a damaged crankshaft position sensor, or a malfunctioning throttle position sensor. In some instances, the engine may stall due to a malfunctioning fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter.

Alternator failure is also a common problem in the 1997 Grand Cherokee. This issue can be caused by a faulty voltage regulator, a damaged alternator belt, or a worn-out alternator. Symptoms of alternator failure include dimming headlights, difficulty starting the engine, and a battery warning light on the dashboard.

Ignition switch malfunction is another common problem in the 1997 Grand Cherokee. This issue can be caused by wear and tear on the ignition switch or a faulty ignition switch relay. Symptoms of ignition switch malfunction include difficulty starting the engine, intermittent loss of power, and a stalling engine.

In addition to these issues, the 1997 Grand Cherokee is also known for suspension problems. The air suspension system in the Grand Cherokee can develop leaks, resulting in a tilted or bumpy ride. The compressor, air springs, struts, and shocks can all wear out over time, leading to a loss of structural integrity and handling issues.

In summary, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 1997 is known for several common problems, including erratic electronic shifting, a stalling engine, alternator failure, ignition switch malfunction, and suspension issues. These problems can be caused by various factors, including manufacturing errors, wear and tear, and faulty components. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

  • Summary: VEHICLE HAS HARD STARTS AND FREQUENT HESITATION AND STALLING, AT ALL SPEEDS CITY STREET DRIVING AS WELL AS HIGHWAY DRIVING. I HAVE HAD A NEW DISTRIBUTOR CAP, ROTOR, PLUGS, WIRES, COIL, INSTALLED, YET SYMPTOMS PERSIST. SUDDEN DECELERATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IS A SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS CONDITION. MY RESEARCH SUGGESTS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE JEEP CHEROKEE XJ. I NARROWLY ESCAPED A CRASH ON A BUSY INTERSTATE HIGHWAY THIS MORNING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. JEEP OUGHT TO BE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM, YET THERE SEEMS TO BE NO REMEDY FOR OWNERS. I WOULD AT LEAST LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. POSSIBLE REMEDIES (FROM MY RESEARCH) INCLUDE MULTIPLE PARTS AND MANY HOURS OF LABOR: O2 SENSOR, THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR, CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR, PLUGS, WIRES, CAP, ROTOR, FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR, ENGINE CONTROL MODULE, ALTERNATOR, NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH, BALLAST RESISTOR, TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE, TORQUE CONVERTOR, POWER CONTROL MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL SOLENOID, ETC. WHAT IS CAUSING ALL OF THESE VEHICLES TO STALL DANGEROUSLY?

  • Summary: ENGINE STALL/SHUT OFF ON A HIGHWAY AT 70 MILES/HR IN CENTER LANE OF A FIVE LANE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY WITH PLENTY OF GAS IN THE TANK. HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES ON DIFFERENT DAYS. I'M ORIGINAL OWNER. HEAVY FAILURE ANALYSIS DONE. ALLEGE THAT JEEP CUT CORNERS THAT RISK DRIVER SAFETY. THEY USED AND MAY STILL BE USING CHEAP CHINESE MICROPROCESSOR CHIPS IN THEIR PROGRAM CONTROL MODULES (PCM). FRED BAILEY FATAL ACCIDENT IS TELLING. HIS JEEP SHUT DOWN ON A BRIDGE. PLENTY OF GAS IN THE TANK. TRACTOR TRAILER PLOWS INTO THE BACK OF THIS JEEP (LIKE MINE). THE GAS TANK EXPLODES AND HE DIES. WWW.DYINGJEEP.COM SHOWS A JEEP VIDEO ACTUALLY DOING THE STALL/DIE ROUTINE. WWW.JEEP FORUM.COM HAS LITERALLY THOUSANDS ON POSTS/THREADS BY ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED OWNER WHO HAVE EVEN MUCH NEWER JEEPS THAT DO THE SAME THING. I PAID A LOT OF MONEY TO KEEP MY JEEP IN WORKING CONDITION. IT IS WORTH ABOUT $3,000 IF IT WAS RELIABLE. I DID THE FUEL TANK RECALL. BROUGHT IN THE JEEP. IT ALREADY HAD A TOW PACKAGE INSTALLED. THEY KEEP THE JEEP FOR HOURS. LIKELY DID NOTHING TO IT UNDER THE RECALL. DIDN'T GIVE ME $100 GIFT CARD. EDMONDS VALUE OF MY CAR WITH 247,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER IS LESS THAN $1,000. EVEN IF I GOT THE EXTRA $1,000 RECALL CREDIT, IT MEANS I HAVE TO BUY ANOTHER LOW QUALITY VEHICLE FROM A BRAND I DO NOT TRUST. IN SHORT, JEEP NEEDS TO MAKE NEW PROGRAM CONTROL MODULES AVAILABLE AGAIN AND AT AFFORDABLE COST. THEY OWE SAFETY TO ALL JEEP OWNERS. SHAME ON THEM AND GOOD ON YOU FOR FINING THEM $105 MILLION. THERE IS POTENTIAL CAUSE TO FINE THEM EVEN MORE FOR NOT ADDRESSING THIS STALL/DIE ISSUE. THE STALL LEADS TO THE REAR END COLLISION AS WE CAN EASILY DEDUCE FROM THE FRED BAILEY EVENT. NO TIME TO REACT TO THE STALL... THEN BOOM. I BELIEVE JEEP HAS HIDDEN INFORMATION ABOUT THESE EVENTS FROM YOU. THE PROBLEM IS NO SECRET TO OWNERS FROM 1992 ON.

Negative 1997 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

  1. Junior Kuphal 2024-11-28

Jeep was my first American made car out of three cars. Although it was my most expensive and most disappointed investment, it is still fun to drive and has a great look. However, I have had some issues with it, such as brake problems from day one, my horn used to go off for no reason, my check engine light is on for no apparent reason, and my rear differential is shot! I have fixed most of those things and I am intending to sell it right away for a killer price...only $8K.

  2. Kelley McClure 2024-11-18

At 64,000 miles, I had to have the rear axle rebuilt which cost over $1000.00. Now, at 66,000 miles, the front end is making the same noise the rear did. I was told that the front end needs rebuilding and the ABS doesn't work. It's frustrating to have these issues at only 66,000 miles! Despite these issues, I still enjoy the smooth ride of this vehicle, but I do wish it was more fuel-efficient and had more affordable repairs.

I work on Jeeps for a living, so I knew what to expect when I bought mine. Mine has the 4.0L engine. When I bought it, the only thing my Jeep needed was an exhaust manifold (they crack all the time on the 4.0). Jeeps require a lot of T.L.C., but don't worry, with proper care, your Jeep will take care of you. Remember to keep the oil changed every 3k miles, rotate the tires every 6-7k miles (very important on a Jeep), and avoid beating the vehicle up on the road.

Driving a Jeep can be a lot of fun, but unfortunately, the 1997 Cherokee model has a reputation for poor gas mileage. Additionally, the all-wheel drive system can be costly to maintain. Currently, my Jeep is experiencing some issues with the transmission sensors, which can be frustrating. However, with proper care and maintenance, owning a Jeep can be a rewarding experience.

This was the first car I had when I got my license. I bought it because it looked very good and I wanted the V8 power. However, soon after I bought it, I realized that it was a typical Mopar car - unreliable and useless. I found out that it leaked oil and the driver's side C/V axle shaft boot had worn out, which caused a popping noise. Unfortunately, the whole thing snapped and I had to replace it. Despite these issues, the engine itself has never had any major problems and currently has 136k miles. The interior is nice, but the stock speakers were blown when I got it, and the passenger side heated seat refuses to work on high. Nevertheless, the leather is very nice.

I'm so happy with my Jeep! Although I won't brag about my fuel mileage (it's a 2-ton, V6), I can't help but rave about how comfortable and useful it is. I've even used it to move myself and several friends. Despite two major mechanical problems (a cracked exhaust manifold and wonky fuel pump), it runs like a champ. I also love the look of my truck; it has that classic, boxy truck feel that I prefer over the more modern sedan-like designs. Overall, I'm thrilled with my Jeep!

  2. Mustafa Kessler 2024-11-06

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited is a fantastic vehicle! It's durable, comfortable, and finely appointed. I've been using it as my primary source of transportation for 5 years now, and I still find it just as fun to drive as the day I bought it.

  3. Giovani Swift 2024-08-28

This jeep has been my baby for the past 5 years and I love it! It's comfortable, safe, and secure. The exterior color is black and the interior is a charcoal grey. It has never been in an accident or broken down, and it has always been very reliable.

  4. Webster Langworth 2024-08-14

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Jeep. I bought it used with 145K miles on it, but it's been great so far! The only repair I've had to make was to replace the water pump, which only cost me $23. I was lucky enough to have a relative who could do the work for me, so I saved on labor costs. The Jeep is really comfortable and feels more like a car than an SUV. I've owned other SUV's in the past, but this one is definitely the best. I put a lot of miles on my vehicles, so reliability is really important to me. After 13K miles and 7 months, it's still going strong! Thanks for listening to my story.

  5. Evan Harris 2024-07-01

Although I have enjoyed owning my Jeep, it has unfortunately required a significant amount of maintenance over the past year. Despite purchasing it from a dealership three years ago, I have had to replace the pistons due to cracking, which cost me $1800. Additionally, I had to replace the U-Joints for $350 and the A/C stopped working over the summer. In contrast, my husband's 1996 Nissan Maxima, which has 225k miles, has not required any repairs. As a result, I have decided to sell my Jeep and purchase an import.
