The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common 2022 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. The most frequently mentioned issues include loud engine sounds, rattling noises from the car's interior, and leaks in the seals.

  1. Loud Engine System: Several owners have reported that the engine system in their 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is unusually loud. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as worn-out engine components, loose engine mounts, or exhaust system problems. A loud engine can be a sign of a serious problem that could lead to engine failure if not addressed promptly.
  2. Rattling Noises from the Car's Interior: Rattling noises from the car's interior are another common problem reported by owners of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. These noises can be caused by loose components in the dashboard, doors, or seats. While some rattling noises may be harmless, others can be a sign of a more significant problem, such as a damaged suspension component or a loose exhaust system.
  3. Leaks in the Seals: Leaks in the seals are a common problem in the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. These leaks can occur in various parts of the car, including the doors, windows, and sunroof. Leaks can be caused by worn-out seals, damaged gaskets, or faulty weatherstripping. While some leaks may be harmless, others can cause water damage to the car's interior or electrical components.

In addition to these common problems, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has also been reported to have issues with its electrical system, steering, and suspension. For instance, some owners have reported that their car's steering wheel suddenly locked up, making it impossible to turn the vehicle. This issue has been attributed to electrical problems in the steering system.

Furthermore, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been recalled twice due to suspension issues, affecting over 350,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. The recall was prompted by a pinch bolt that may break during assembly, leading to the loss of clamp load between the upper control arm ball joint and the steering knuckle. This issue can cause the wheel to fall outboard and the driver to lose control of the vehicle, potentially leading to a crash.

In summary, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has several common problems, including loud engine sounds, rattling noises from the car's interior, and leaks in the seals. Additionally, the vehicle has been recalled twice due to suspension issues, and some owners have reported electrical problems with the steering system. It is essential for owners to address these issues promptly to prevent further damage or safety hazards.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-04
  • VIN: 1C4RJYC62N8
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Jeep app has failed to inform me of recalls in a timely manner. The Gas Buddy app linked to my vehicle VIN provided information within 24 hours of your published recall. I have checked my VIN in your app to verify that it is part of the recall. Since the battery fires can start without notice and could destroy my house and kill my family this should have been immediately sent via the Jeep app. The recall notification on the Jeep app has not been updated since 2 August 2024, also unacceptable - this should be updated at worst weekly. Sending notification by snail mail is not acceptable in the 21st century especially when there is an app and the vehicle has internet connection. The recall should also be announced on the start screen when I start my vehicle.

POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-24
  • VIN: 1C4RJYB69N8
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The vehicle has intermittent issues whereby it will flash several icons (a Turtle, lightning bolt) and send a error message about throttling, then completely shut down during operation. This has been ongoing since a few months after I received the vehicle. During shut down, the vehicle's power is completely unresponsive, I cannot use gas power to drive the car, it simply becomes unresponsive and non-operational. These shut downs have occurred while idling at traffic lights, while driving at low speeds on residential roads and, the past 4 experienced shut downs, on the highway. [XXX] ; [XXX] MA, [XXX], and [XXX]). These shut downs have occurred with my 7-year old in the car, causing a significant safety risk to everyone in the vehicle. The dealer has received several reports from me (which they will not document), and it has been in for repair on a minimum of 5 occasions. Each time, with one exception, the service team tells me "the codes are gone" and they can't do anything. On one occasion, the care shut down on [XXX] and I drove immediately to the dealership, whereby they reported the issued as related to the "MAP" and fixed. It is not. The car has been recalled for this exact issue, and went in for the repair, which did not fix it. The safety risk of this vehicle is far beyond acceptable, my family is at risk every time I need to drive it. I should be able to have safe use of the car I have paid a significant amount of money for. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: 1C4RJHDG2N8
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: While traveling/driving with the ADAS on, the brakes slam on detecting a front end impact. The dash board disappears and the word BRAKE in all red capital lettering with a very loud beeping coming through the speakers happens. The first time it happened was in Oct of 2023 and has happened every time I travel using the ADAS. I have made an appt every time I’ve gotten back to town after traveling to have it looked at. #1 I’ve been told they can’t find a problem with it, #2 It’s been recalibrated 3 times and the service manager even asked for my permission to take my vehicle to his personal home for the weekend so that he could follow the FCA guidelines after it was recalibrated because it had to sit for a time period before it was drove. My Jeep App can show the history of its location. While traveling home the weekend of April 26, 2024 the brakes slammed on 3 times simultaneously causing all traffic behind me to lock up their brakes. Had I gotten hit I would’ve become a human pin ball across 3 lanes of Interstate 80/90. When I pulled off on the side of road so did the vehicle who almost hit me, I was so shook up I was in tears #3 I got told to not use the feature since I knew there was a problem, #4 I asked if there was something they could install to record what’s going on #5 they finally installed an “In flight recording module” the time before I drove home but upon return saying it recorded information but that they don’t know the reason why it’s doing it or how to fix it. I’ve never received a single invoice from the dealership when I’ve taken it in for this EVER!!!! I’ve only been told they have “Star cases” on it and that is enough to prove its a “buy back or lemon”, the last message I received from a Service Rep at the dealership was from Jul 25, 2024 about seeking a buy back. I sent a message today (Aug 25, 2024) asking for a plan or solution to this problem. I’ve heard nothing yet again from anyone!!!!!! I’m beyond frustrated!!!!!!!!!

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
  • VIN: 1C4RJJBGXN8
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine making thwomping sound on passenger side, only after 30 miles of driving. Must be in gear - D or R. 27k miles Jeep Grand Cherokee L Engine mounts suspected. No inspection yet because it's near impossible to recreate in a 'shop' environment. My dealer requires leaving the car for a week and they drive it for five minutes. That is not enough to get this to happen. We believe it has to do with TSB - 09-015-22 On the Jeep Forums [XXX] ), a LOT of people have this same problem. The issue is, you have to drive the vehicle about 30 miles before it appears. This is consistent with all users on the forum as well. Of course this makes it VERY difficult to pin down and near impossible to get a warranty fix since they cannot recreate it. In the TSB it mentions "If the symptom/condition is present and the mounts are not NIK AG or newer, proceed..." This means they know the old mounts are faulty by admission, yet no recall. Clearly everyone is running into this or will. Poor design, should be a recall on these parts - Engine mount. BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-17
  • VIN: 1C4RJKBG5N8
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: A service was scheduled to repair the rear view camera visibility in which the dealership failed to complete. The recall repair performed did not fix the situation. The rear view camera still shows up as a blue screen as well as the parksense sensors not working at all. This is a huge safety issue as nothing is shown when backing up and no sensors work. This problem occurred randomly while starting the vehicle and has not worked since then.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-30
  • VIN: 1C4RJHEG2N8
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: While driving my car on the interstate and main highways, it started wobbling back and forth worsening as it was driven further. The main body of the car began swaying left to right while still driving in a straight line. As we noticed it, luckily there was a Jeep dealership at the next exit on the interstate, so we took it straight to them and the senior mechanic stated he had "never seen anything like it" how there were multiple breaks in the metal connecting the passenger side rear knuckle joints without a known impact to the site of damage on the car, he stated "something like that should have never broken by itself without you hitting something". Nothing was or has ever been hit in this car, this piece of equipment failed on its own and put several people's life in danger, the wheel could have very well come off and caused a crash at interstate speeds of up to 75mph (the local speed limit) and surely would have caused multiple fatalities as there were multiple passengers. The vehicle has been inspected by the team at Blue Ribbon Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Sallisaw, Oklahoma and is being repaired there, and the available broken parts will be returned to me when the repairs are completed as evidence. There were no notices or warnings from the system alerting us of any issue with the suspension or any other malfunction in the car. This is a very dangerous issue if there are multiple other cars that have had this issue.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-24
  • VIN: 1C4RJYC67N8
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The front suspension rattles and clunks constantly as if there is loose linkage or ball joints going bad. It is happening at every speed and is worse when it is hot outside. I am concerned that something is loose and will result in a loss of control. The dealer has been unable to find the source of the loud clunking noise but says everything looks ok.

EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-19
  • VIN: 1C4RJYD65N8
  • Components: EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: I bought a LS2 motorcycle Helmet in a local shop on 06/26/24 to be a passenger on a motorcycle ride. While removing the lining and installing a communication system I discovered the foam was cracked on the posterior area of the helmet. The edges of the polystyrene were uneven. The local shop has a NO return NO exchange policy for helmets. I returned the very next day and showed the findings to the salesperson. The helmet was broken, and I did not feel safe to use it. They took the helmet. On 07/20/24 I picked up a replacement helmet. Same brand. The salesperson stated that they contacted the manufacture company and the manufacture company concluded that I broke the helmet trying to forcefully remove the polystyrene foam, which I did not. I know the integrity of the helmet is what makes it safe. The salesperson handled me the replacement helmet and stated that she personally reviewed the helmet, and it was intact. I did not review the helmet at the shop with her before I left. After I left the shop, I checked the helmet and found the same crack on the posterior part of the foam. This time the crack does not compromise the edges of the polystyrene, like the crack on the first helmet. The safety of the helmet may not be compromised in terms of absorbing deceleration forces, but I do not feel safe to use it. I bought a different brand helmet online. The foam is not intact in 2 new helmets. I have the replacement helmet for inspection and photos of the first helmet. My safety would have been at risk if I did not remove the lining to install the communication system. I am concerned that it could be a problem in the manufacturing or shipping and handling of this product and maybe others will never know that they are using a defective product. The crack was exactly on the same area on both helmets. I sent a message to the US Distibution company.

SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-23
  • VIN: 1C4RJHCG6N8
  • Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: we have reported to the dealer multiple instances of noises (crunching and low thuds) and 'thumping' felt through floor boards coming from what appears to be front passenger side. Dealer installed right from sway bar end link as well as subsequently perform NHTSA mandatory recall repairs on Front Upper Control Arm to Steering Knuckle Pinch Bolt. After each 'repair' the problem appears to be getting worse (additionally we had the experience of the 'Sway Bar Disconnect Unavailable' light coming on while driving on a paved surface without having depressed the Sway-Bar button). We brought the vehicle into the Dealer again and one of the Service Managers came for a ride and confirmed our complaints. After a day of looking the Dealer stated that they are going to replace parts previously installed as they may have been defective. Parts are on order but we are concerned for our safety in continuing to drive the vehicle, due not only the sounds we are hearing / feeling but after having researched complaints online (as there are many folks having similar experiences, it appears that Chrysler / Jeep still have more work to do on the safe operation of the vehicle . thank you

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-16
  • VIN: 1C4RJYD65N8
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: For our 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4Xe: Vehicle failed to accelerate. The engine would kind of rev but no forward motion. This occurred after driving approximately 2 miles from my house. i had just made a right turn at a busy intersection and driven approximately 100 yards when the car would not accelerate. This occurred on a very busy street. Luckily, I was able to coast to the side of the road. After shutting the car off and starting it again, it was able to again accelerate. This was scary as my wife and daughter were in the car. It has not yet been reproduced by a dealer. There were no warning lights or messages. This seems familiar to a recall that is issued for same year Jeep Wrangler 4Xe models.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-05
  • VIN: 1C4RJHET2N8
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: While passing through an intersection the AEB brought the vehicle to a full stop despite no forward traffic or obstructions. Warning system lights lights for other systems (traction control, airbags, etc.) lit up in the dash. A vehicle traveling behind nearly collided in light of the unwarranted braking. After coming to a complete stop the vehicle released the brake on its own and shut off the other system warning lights. Normal operation ensued.

  • VIN: 1C4RJFBG6NC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Bought vehicle from Joe Machens Chrysler, Columbia, MO. [XXX]. The net day after a long drive out of town, the owner put vehicle in reverse to leave home and there was an issue. The vehicle sounded like it had “run over a metal garbage can.” It vibrated the floorboard as well. It happens only when the car is in reverse. It happens immediately when you try to back up. It is available for inspection on request. Safety is not an issue, the dealer could not reproduce the sound (owner left vehicle at dealer overnight. It was only inspected by the car dealer. There were no warning signs. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-19
  • VIN: 1C4RJYB61N8
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: There have now been at least three incidents where the accelerator is pressed and the vehicle does not respond for an extended period of time, then overreacts and launches the vehicle forward unpredictably. Most recently, leaving a parking lot, I pressed the accelerator gently as I normally would, the vehicle just rolled down to the road, no power. As oncoming traffic was coming (now about 5 seconds later), I pressed the pedal further, almost to the floor, the engine engaged and launched the car forward. This has happened in traffic circles, and produces a delay long enough for other drivers to sound their horn, as my vehicle refuses to move for at least 3-5 seconds. This has resulted in many close calls when oncoming traffic is coming and my vehicle will not move as it should - and this type of incident occurs unpredictably.

Negative 2022 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

  1. Reinhold Friesen 2024-11-10

The 4th Grand Cherokee has been disappointing in terms of fuel efficiency, especially for the V-6 models. Additionally, the radio screen has been malfunctioning frequently and there seems to be a motor noise coming from the back end every time the car is started. However, I must say that I absolutely love the interior and the ride quality. One downside is that I am unable to put it in 4WD myself, which is one of the reasons why I bought a Jeep in the first place.

  2. Malachi Ritchie 2024-09-24

I can understand your frustration with dial shift. It can be difficult to get used to. Is there anything I can do to help you adjust to it?

  3. Jonatan Douglas 2024-05-29

It sounds like it's quite noisy and the ride might be a bit bumpy.

Positive 2022 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

  1. Jan Nicolas 2024-11-13

Just bought my 4th Grand Cherokee, a 2022 Altitude. Totally love it! My husband is over 6 ft tall and has never liked my Jeeps in the past. He actually loves driving/riding in this one. It seems so much bigger. This redesign was a good one!

  2. Oscar Hudson 2024-11-10

You've covered almost 10,000 miles and it's been a flawless experience. I'm glad to hear that you love the ride and handling, and that it performs well in heavy rain and snow. I understand your concern about the paddle switches on the steering wheel, as they may be confusing for some drivers. On the other hand, I'm happy to hear that you find the interior seating perfect and comfortable, and that the heat and air system works great. The engine may be a little loud, but it certainly delivers plenty of power. I can see that you miss having a CD player for your old music, but overall, it sounds like a 5-star vehicle to you.

  3. Raymundo Hessel 2024-09-19

Great vehicle with lots of safety precautions!

  4. Nickolas Zboncak 2024-08-27

I've owned a '22 GC Summit for 4 months now. Living in Colorado and enjoying the mountains, I decided to replace the 20

  5. Jonathon Luettgen 2024-06-17

Absolutely amazing! I can't wait to show it off. I love everything about it. It's even prettier in person than I expected.
