The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 1C4RJFLG6KC
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My jeep has a screen on the dashboard that controls the radio, navigation, and settings for the vehicle (i.e. the main "navigation screen"). All of the safety and advanced driver assistance systems are controlled through this screen and user interface. There is no other way to control/adjust these systems. There is a widespread issue with the late generation WK2 Jeep Grand Cherokees where the screen delaminates, rendering the entire screen and user interface non-functional. This results in a safety issue where multiple systems (including the ADAS) cannot be cannot be adjusted or used. I reached out to Jeep/Chrysler/Stellantis for assistance in repairing/replacing the screen. The denied a claim to repair or replace the screen. I do not feel safe operating a vehicle where I cannot control or adjust critical operations of the car. I believe this widespread issue of screen delamination should be considered for a recall.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
  • VIN: 1C4RJFBG4KC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: On three occasions over the last three years my vehicle has randomly lost power and I have had to pull over and turn the vehicle off, place in Park and restart the engine. The latest incident happened on I95 in heavy traffic, and I was lucky to no be involved in an accident. This time the engine did not restart immediately but only after a 15-minute wait. I received no check engine light and no computer indications of the failure. I know this is an issue with Jeep as my wife and sister have had the same issues in other jeep models. on all occasions the dealerships said they have no idea of what the issue could be and really offered no help.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-05
  • VIN: 1C4RJFCG7KC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: I purchased a 2019 grand Cherokee and the radio started to delaminating. Called Jeep cares and they told me if I went and got a diagnostic saying that The screen was delaminating, and I got a diagnostic that said that they would put it in the system and it would be covered was ever said to me about a warranty because I’m over my warranty, but I have an extended warranty through Lafontaine. It’s called easy care and when they told me that I was excited because, I was gonna get my radio fixed because the radio is the main brains to the car controls the camera on the phone or settings. I’ll have to get diagnostic. I called to make sure that was in the system and the lady told me that they changed the policy and that they would not cover it. The company knows all those radios that they put in those cars are defective and they are replacing them, but they’re giving people a hard time that don’t have a warranty and the fact that I was told it would be taken care of they should be held accountable to their word it’s a contract, even if it was verbal. And spreading, and that means that that radio can take control of my car is a getting somebody hurt or myself. It is very distracting the screen where it’s peeling on the inside.. Lafontaine told me Carol warranty and insinuated it was going to be covered. That’s why I had to drive all the way up to Fenton to get the diagnostic done there and then once I did the diagnostic, they said there was no warranty and the dealership does not want to help me out of her hands Somebody has to be accountable for him. Jeep knows about the defective products and . Several people gone through the same thing. They would rather make people come to them and then try to collect all this money for their defective product. It was the beginning of September when I called and I talked to somebody from customer care a About the Jeep. I’m finally complaints with whoever I can until they fix my radio like they told me they were going to do

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-07
  • VIN: 1C4RJFAG5KC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: Well maintained and properly serviced car. Never had any issues. While driving out of town, 4hrs into the drive the electrical system went haywire. Error messages began cycling through on the driver panel - stability control lights, service air bag system, engine light comes up, and service bag system, after which the car loses total power. After pulling onto the side of the road, I placed car in park, and attempted to restart and it would not power on. All lights are working but the vehicle will not start - it makes starting sound but won’t power on. After trying for about 30 minutes, the ac blower pop on, which was strange b/c the car was powered off. The car starts and is driven about a mile and the same thing happens all over. After trying another hour it starts again and drives another 2 hrs to my destination (at this time the radio and ac was powered off.) I chose to leave it off as I didn’t want anything to stop vehicle since it was running. Upon arriving to my destination a mechanic looked at it and said the electric systems stopped communicating and he reset it. The vehicle drove around town, a fee miles here and there, seemingly fine. When I put it back on the highway to return home the next day, the problem started all over again. We ended up stranded on the side of the highway yet again and after about 20 minutes, the car started up. We were able to drive to the nearest gas station at which time I attempted to turn the car off, thinking that maybe that would help to reset it. At this time the vehicle would not turn off. The front windows were not operating. The windshield wipers would not come on. It just so happened to be raining heavily, and I had to drive in the rain with no windshield wipers. Next, all the instruments went down. Gas hand went to E, even though there was over 200 miles of gas. The blind spots warning lights lit up and remained lit, the car appeared to want to lose power, would putter but remained on. Made it home and car powered off.

  • Summary: Navigation touch screen delamination rendering the user interface that controls many of the car's functions inoperable. Many of the advanced driver assistance systems along with settings for the car's engine, suspension, and steering are controlled through this interface. This is a widespread issue in the WK2 models of Jeep Grand Cherokees. Safe operation of the vehicle is predicated on a functioning touch screen. POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-01
  • VIN: 1C4RJFBG8KC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I have a few different issues with my car. The transmission has been shifting roughly, there’s a loud clunking sound when I put it in reverse, and I'm experiencing slipping, hesitation on acceleration, and sudden bursts of power. The car has been starting to jerk a lot. The engine has lost power while driving, which forced me to pull over on a busy highway at night with my kids in the vehicle. Fortunately, I was able to roll off the freeway, turn off the car, and after several attempts, I managed to drive home. Also my vehicle sometimes have a difficulty starting. I’ll press the start button and no response. I’ve also been dealing with electrical problems. My screen constantly freezes, goes blank or turns off. At times I can’t connect my smart devices. My AC has broke, repaired and having problems again. I previously took my vehicle to the dealership to address issues with the AC. I mentioned these problems, and I was told they would be checked. However, an employee later said they couldn’t find anything wrong. When I spoke to another employee, he admitted he wasn’t aware of the issues. It’s very frustrating dealing with these significant problems, especially since I can’t trust my vehicle and always feel scared to drive out of town. All of this has been an ongoing issue. I have a few friends same model and year and they received recalls but I didn’t. This is my only vehicle, I paid a lot of money for it and I shouldn’t have to be dealing with this. Please help me.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-06
  • VIN: 1C4RJFLTXKC
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: There is something wrong with the front suspension of my 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee. At highway speeds there is noise and vibration which is felt through the steering wheel and brake pedal. At lower speed, on city streets, you can feel / hear a noise when turning and the steering will pull hard to the left you have to quickly turn to the right to get the car going straight again. There seems to be something loose in the suspension which shifts out of place. I have taken it to the Jeep dealer several times and they say they do not find anything, they will balance and align the suspension but this did not fix the problem . The last time they blamed the tires, which had 55K miles, so I replaced the tires and still have the problem. This is a very dangerous situation, if it occurred in heavy traffic it would could cause the car to lurch into the oncoming lane of traffic and cause a head-on collision.

  • Summary: I received a letter in the mail that my Jeep had a recall for some type of sensor that affects the brakes and brake lights. I’ve read that a malfunction in this sensor can cause my brake to not work and can cause me to crash into someone or something. The fact that this issue hasn’t been resolved yet is beyond me. This recall came out in 2022. It had been 2 years. What’s going happen when a mother is driving her family around in her Jeep that also has this recall on it, she switched the brake on but it doesn’t brake and she and her family crash into someone. Life’s are at risk here. I am planning to start a family within the next year and I will be getting rid of this car because I will not trust my family in it.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-22
  • VIN: 1C4RJFBT8KC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Today after I parked my 2019 jeep grand Cherokee and locked it I noticed my brake lights stayed illuminated. I got back in my car and confirmed that I was in park and my parking brake was on and my brake pedal did not feel stuck down in any way. I also tried turning my headlamps from auto to off. That didn’t resolve my brake light issue. I restarted it and put it in gear and drove a little and my fiancé confirmed from outside the car that even when in drive and moving without my foot on brake my brake lights stayed on. I got out and locked it again and then tried my remote start which did not function. I then decided to try drive around a little more and see if it would reset itself. Nothing changed with driving. Then after driving around I tried turning off my park sense button and the brake light went off and back to normal. Once i was parked again I retried the remote start and it worked. When I looked up this issue it sounded like symptoms of recall z48 which was repaired June 29, 2022 by my dealer. Tomorrow I will see if it happens again and if it will start and shift without brake pedal pressed as that is also related to recall z48. Could the repair for recall z48 have failed or was not done properly by my dealer? Just for reference my jeep only has 11,000 miles on it.

Negative 2019 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

Hey there! Have you seen this SUV? It's only $43,000.00! Although, I have to admit, the doors can be a bit loud and tinny sounding when they lock while driving. And getting in and out can be a bit of a challenge, as you might bump your head or knock your hat off. I actually got this car through my guy at Centennial leasing, who I've been doing business with for 18 years. While I appreciate his recommendation, I'm not sure it's the right fit for me. Thanks for listening!

Around two months ago, I was driving to work when my car got stuck in 3rd gear. It wouldn't shift up or down, and the check engine light came on. I stopped the car, turned it off, and when I started it again, it went back to normal, but the check engine light remained on. The next day, I took it to the dealer, but they took about 10 days to tell me that there was nothing wrong with the car, even though I told them that it was also doing hard shifting. Today, it happened again, and when I ran a diagnostic, the code P0733 came up. I called the dealer, but they told me that the check engine light has to be on, and they want me to take the car next month, even though the check engine light is already off. This is unacceptable. If a car owner tells you that their car is having an issue, you should take their word for it, because no owner wants to take their car to the dealer for no reason!

I recently traded in my 2019 Honda Pilot Touring for a 2019 Jeep GC Altitude, but unfortunately, it hasn't been the best fit for me. I've had some issues with noise and quality, and my dealership experience hasn't been ideal. Additionally, I've found that the rear view mirror system and sport mode could use some improvement. While I have experience in the car business and have built cars myself, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this particular model.

  4. Vincenzo Emmerich 2024-05-24

The ride comfort is subpar, as the vehicle transmits every bump on the road. Additionally, the 2019 model's lighter weight causes a jumpy start when accelerating. The gas mileage has also been disappointing, as I have not achieved above 16.5 mpg in combined city and highway driving. These factors are concerning given the price point of the vehicle.

Hello, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to bring to your attention an issue I've been experiencing with my Grand Cherokee. The fender flares on the front are peeling off and the rear flares on the passenger side extend out beyond the door, which I find to be quite dangerous. When entering and exiting the vehicle, they can easily catch on clothing and even cause someone to fall. Unfortunately, the service manager informed me that this is a design flaw present in all Grand Cherokees. As a result, I would hesitate to recommend this model to anyone. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Love this car! Just bought it a couple of weeks ago from Dewey Jeep and drove it to NJ. It's such a comfortable ride and so easy to drive. Plus, I'm getting 22.3 mpg!

We are delighted with our 2019 Limited SUV Trail Rated model, equipped with the powerful 5.7 V8 engine. Despite the lack of engine options in this review, we spent months researching Jeep and ordered exactly what we wanted. As retirees, we don't use it every day, which is why I installed a battery disconnect switch for convenience. With the switch, even with the front passenger seat moved forward, I can easily disconnect the negative cable. This modification is especially useful for those who tow their Jeep with an RV. We no longer use the switch but try to use the vehicle every few days. We have had some minor issues in the past, but they have been resolved, and we have only put 8,500 miles on it since delivery. We use 89 octane in our 5.7 L engine, and we are glad we chose this engine as it provides ample power. Although the vehicle is more complicated than a 1950s model, we still love it and are glad we bought it when we did. We have yet to use its full capabilities, but we are excited to do so. The vehicle is trail rated and comes with skid plates, making it a great choice for off-road adventures. We ordered our vehicle to get exactly what we wanted, and we have no comment on the dealer as ownership and staff have changed. Overall, we are very pleased with our purchase and would highly recommend it to others.I've waxed my car several times and I keep it in an attached heated garage, which makes it easy to service. I changed to Mobile 1 synthetic oil at 5,000 miles and use Jeep filters. It's coming up on the third year of our new '20 year' plan. I'll take it to a car wash next time out as we are now in below zero weather and my home winter usage of water jacks up my sewer charge all summer. Update: As of 8.18.23, the odometer reads only 15,000 miles. The only problem I've had was when I left the driver's door open overnight and it ran the battery down. My trickle charger wouldn't charge it. I would have thought that it should have cut off the battery to prevent that. Getting a jump and driving the vehicle restored the battery. Maybe it shortened the battery life, but I don't know. I still don't use the disconnect switch. Other than that, I haven't had any problems, but I do need to rotate the tires. It still hasn't seen a dealer since taking delivery, and I change my own oil and filters.

Never thought of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and I'm so glad we did! My wife and I absolutely love this vehicle, from top to bottom.

  4. Deangelo Blanda 2024-08-11

The Trailhawk trim is the perfect combo of performance and luxury. This seems like the ultimate blend, and I highly recommend it.

  5. Gage Buckridge 2024-07-21

I spent months researching vehicles to find one that would meet my specific needs within the $35,000-$40,000 price range. Although I usually drive pickups, my wife insisted we get something different. I wasn't interested in a Kia, Hyundai, or Toyota Highlander, and the Toyota 4 Runner felt outdated. That's when I discovered the Grand Cherokee, which my wife approved of and I was really impressed by. Jeep's consistent body style means that even a 10-year-old Jeep doesn't look dated.
