2014 Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.
Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common 2014 Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to its powertrain, Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) sensors, and electrical issues.
One of the most significant problems is a powertrain fault, which led to a recall of 11,632 vehicles in Australia. This issue is caused by a potential fault with the crankshaft position sensor, which may fail and result in an engine stall, loss of engine power, and the inability to restart the engine. This sensor fault increases the risk of accidents, injuries, or even fatalities to vehicle occupants or other road users.
Another problem that affects the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is related to its TIPM sensors, which are prone to fail, particularly in early model years such as 2011-2013. The TIPM sensor is responsible for handling various important functions in the car, including sending power to the wipers, fuel pump, and radiator fans. If it fails, it can cause a range of issues, including lights not working, the fuel pump not turning off, the vehicle stalling randomly, the starter not cranking, and the radiator fans not turning on.
The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee also has electrical problems, which are the worst problem category overall for this model year.
Other issues that affect the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee include bubbling leather and misfires in early models (2011-2014), potentially pricy failures in the air suspension system, and transmission problems in the 2014-2017 models, which can cause the transmission to shudder and "bump" when coming to a stop and general hard shifting.
In summary, the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee has several common problems, primarily related to its powertrain, TIPM sensors, and electrical issues. These problems can lead to expensive repairs and should be addressed promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
- VIN: 1C4RJFBG5EC
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The Jeep has had major issues with the fuel system. The first reported issue is during the fill the filler would click like it was full when it was in the beginning stages of the fill. It ended up soaking me with gasoline and shutting down a gas station for spill. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA and the Vermont Attorney General because the dealerships were not fixing the problem. The fuel tank was finally repaired when the Attorney General got involved. 2024 the Jeep is again having issues with the fuel system. When the tank is filled to capacity it creates gasoline fumes so strong that it infiltrates the cabin and can be detected from the parking lot. It is really scary to keep having issues with the fuel system. I am shocked after reading on the internet so many Jeep owners with fuel system issues that the vehicles are not on recall. I want to report this because it is a safety issue.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-03
- VIN: 1C4RJFCM1EC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: While traveling at freeway speeds the engine suddenly died. The vehicle was taken to an independent shop where they confirmed the cause was a connecting rod failure. They commented this is a common failure in the 2014-2016 Jeep grand Cherokee eco diesels along with the same model year dodge ram 1500s. There was no warning signs of this issue and the independent shop stated they have not been able to find a root cause as similar to our case the engine had plenty of oil in it to prevent this issue. During this event I also reviewed the engine temp and oil temps all were well within the normal operating temps. This put others and my own life at risk as we lost complete power. Fortunately I was on a straight stretch and in the far lane so I was able to safely coast to a stop. This could lead to a very different outcome. The component has not been inspected by police or insurance agents as it’s been claimed this is not a covered component under previous FCA extended warranties for a faulty emission system.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
- VIN: 1C4RJEAGXEC
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: The seat belt does not retract as it should. I have already had it replaced once and I have a second that is failing now. We have not been in an accident to see if it is a problem with restraining you as a driver, but it is a point of concern. The dealer replaced the first one, right after we purchased the vehicle, and it is exhibiting similar symptoms now of not retracting after unbuckled. You can manually align it to get it to feed back, but this doesn't seem to be the correct way to handle this.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-09
- VIN: 1C4RJEAGXEC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Known issue with engine design that could lead to catastrophic failure. The rocker arms fail and gouge the cam, causing catastrophic engine failure, if not addressed as soon as symptoms occur. We caught the knocking noise early and were able to have both sides replaced for $3800 on a vehicle with relatively low miles. This has been a noticed issue and to my knowledge, the replacement parts were redesigned to correct the issue.

- Summary: oil leakage
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
- VIN: 1C4RJFJT3EC
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: The driver's side active head restraint deployed without warning striking me in the back of the head, fortunately not hard enough to seriously injure me, but hard enough to cause a headache. I had just gotten into the vehicle to drive to work, so it wasn't even moving. There are broken pieces of plastic that apparently used to hold it closed. My vehicle has no uncompleted recalls, but now looking at my vehicle information online I've discovered that there was a "warranty extension" in 2020 regarding a possible failure exactly like this, and I've also discovered there were lawsuits following reports of injuries! Chrysler never notified me, nor did the Jeep dealer bring it to my attention during any of my routine service appointments. Why wasn't this a RECALL requiring repair instead of left to be a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off??? Adding insult to injury, the warranty extension to 10 years after the in-service date in 2013 doesn't cover repairs today! The passenger side restraint hasn't popped open (yet!) but I'm not stupid enough to wait until it fails and injures a family member, so now I have to replace BOTH sides and PAY for both out of my pocket. Please make this a RECALL so Chrysler will have even a slight urgency to notify owners, and hopefully decide to replace the head rests immediately, regardless of how old they are.
AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-06
- VIN: 1C4RJEAGXEC
- Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The active headrest restraint system deployed without being in a crash or hitting a bump for that matter. The vehicle was sitting stationary when it deployed. This could be a major safety issue as I have had a history of concussions and if this were to have deployed while I was driving, the consequences could have been severe. I see that they expanded a 10 year warranty for this, but it deployed a couple of months after that 10 year warranty expired. This should be covered for lifetime as it is a malfunctioning safety component that could seriously injure someone or render them incapacitated at highway speeds. All of this is due to a plastic clip failing that holds a metal pin.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-25
- VIN: 1C4RJEBG2EC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The headrest on the drivers seat came apart. We have been unable to get it back together. Car was at rest in a parking lot and very luckily was not being driven at the time. This would be extremely dangerous if the car was being driven when this happened
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: 1C4RJFCT1EC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: The vehicle has been making this electrical noise inside the vehicle. The vehicle upon accelerating, would hesitate to go then jerk. The vehicle was inspected by a mechanic technician. It was suggested that the vehicle TCM be replaced. It was replaced and the jerking still exist. The vehicle out of nowhere started having these unexpected electrical issues. This caused the cooling system fan to not work. I ordered a new cooling system fan and had it replaced/installed. However, these issues along with other safety concerning issues have continued to occur. This vehicle can cause significant serious injury or injuries to the owner or others. The vehicle would lock up occasionally. This model jeep (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7L) has some safety concerns. This need to be fixed immediately before it cause catastrophic damages/injuries to others.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-03
- VIN: 1C4RJFCM4EC
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 70, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was not able to be restarted. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the high-pressure fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the mechanic was not able to restart the vehicle. The contact was then notified that there was no fuel pressure and a fuel system test and injector return test were needed to look for internal fuel damage. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact believed that the failure was associated to Manufacturer Recall: W57 or W68. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-13

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-19
- VIN: 1C4RJFCM9EC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The component that failed is the EGR cooler. It’s available upon request for inspection. This component can crack and cause the car to start on fire and it’s currently cracked causing the car to not be able to be driven. The recall occurred in 2020 and I was told by three different dealerships including the one that fixed it foxchrysler in Canada and they all stated the recall had been remedied. The vehicle was taken to four separate mechanics for inspection. The warning lamps that are illuminated are the check engine light, service AWD, and service electric throttle control module and the code comes back as the EGR cooler when the vehicle is ran through the diagnostic system. They first appeared July 19th 2024. I called the dealership I bought the truck from who informed me the whole recall wasn’t fixed and to contact an authorized dealership in my area to get it fixed. (Motor Cars of Lansing, MI) I spoke with the dealership who they referred me to (Griffin Jeep and Chrysler S 27th street Milwaukee WI) they informed me that the recall was marked as complete effective 03/31/2021 and to call the dealership they fixed the recall in Canada and see if it had a warranty. Spoke with a rep at Fox Chrysler in Canada who informed me the part only had a two year warranty and would’ve expired 03/31/2023. My car is a used car that only had a one year warranty and I would have to pay for this part that was recalled out of pocket that could run me anywhere from $700-$10,000 which is way more than the car is worth
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-09
- VIN: 1C4RJFCT2EC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My instrument cluster (where the speed, gas level, engine temperature, etc. Is displayed) had completely blacked out. It was periodically coming on. But it's not coming on at all anymore. I've taken it to the dealership, had it replaced (with a used part), had the wiring checked, also tried reprogramming the instrument cluster. Nothing has worked. There was a recall for this same exact problem, with the same exact vehicle except my vehicle was manufactured 3 months after the recall notice called for vehicle manufactured through Aug 2013 my was November 2013. I feel that my vehicle also should've been part of that recall notice.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
- VIN: 1C4RJFBG5EC
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited started to shudder when accelerating, roughly into to 2nd/3rd gear, but would stop if pedal was lifted then would shift normally. In about a weeks time, the engine light came on and the vehicle would not shift gears at all while the car was in motion. Would have to pull over immediately, restart vehicle, then shifting would be fine and light went off. Could not reproduce. 3 days later, vehicle shifted into neutral multiple times during one trip of approx 10 miles with each time requiring a restart. Engine light has stayed on, dealership has been contacted.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
- VIN: 1C4RJFJM9EC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My Jeep Diesel Grand Cherokee engine and oil cooler overheats. This has progressively gotten worse. I have taken it to my local dealer and they can't and honestly don't try very hard to figure out the problem. I have taken it to local auto shops and they have replaced several parts but no improvements have been made. I have been told this Jeep needs an oil cooler but Jeep discontinued making these for my year. I have spent thousands of dollars to attempt to fix this and nothing has worked. This vehicle has left me stranded on the side of a busy highway with my family. I do not get warning lights, I just notice the arrow creeping dangerously close to the red marker before it completely blows the radiator. I cautiously drive slow going uphill when I am towing which is also a danger with cars passing me swiftly. Jeep knows this is a problem with the Diesel motor but they have not offered a fix for it. I can't sell it to anyone because of the known problem. I am completely stuck with a lame vehicle.
AIR BAGS,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
- VIN: 1C4RJFCG6EC
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: -The passenger seat head rest popped open (exploded - it was super loud) when in the process of backing up out of my driveway. - The safety of everyone in the car was put at risk. My husband was in the seat and was hit in the back of the head. My son, his wife and their 2 month old daughter was in the back seat. - The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by anyone. Without properly functioning parking lamps these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, "Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."
- Consequence: Without parking lamps, the vehicle may not be as visible to other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash.

I waited two years to write this review. I purchased my 2014 Overland 4x4 off-lease in 2016 and have put 76,000 miles on it. I am happy to report that I have had zero issues with this Jeep, and have only needed to perform normal maintenance such as oil changes, air filter replacements, and fluid top-ups. I understand that some people had issues with the 14's early on with recalls, but I believe that the early bugs are gone with the many uconnect updates and trans updates. My transmission is silky smooth and shifts great. I actually prefer the You can't though, so I rarely use Sport Mode. The Jeep is plenty roomy and comfortable, not only in the front, but also in the rear bench as it reclines as well. The Overland has a leather-stitched dash, LED puddle lights, and interior ambient lighting that is really nice. The interior is very nice for its class, minus a few cost-cutting areas such as the bottom half of doors, which is hard plastic. Nonetheless, there are still no rattles or squeaks in the Jeep, and it is as solid as can be. I really like the Uconnect and its user-friendliness. I have had no issues with it either. The 17' models added Apple CarPlay. The acceleration from the 3.6 is adequate. Around town is fine, but on the highway, it would be nice to have some extra upper-end torque and horsepower. I think they should bump this 3.6 up to 305-310 horse like in the Challenger. I am not sure why they don't do it in the Jeep. I average about 22mpg in mixed 50/50 driving, which I think is fine based on a 5,000 lb SUV. In the next version of the GC, I hope it sheds some weight as it is a heavy pig for the size. Most alternatives to this same size are in the 4500lb range. Overall, I am very happy with the vehicle as it is the Swiss Army knife of vehicles. It is nice enough to pull up to a fine restaurant, has enough cargo room to carry gear and five people, and is rugged enough to go off-road with no issues. I have taken mine off-road often through mud and rutted roads as I have a cabin up north. It is also a tank in the snow using the snow mode, which locks the differentials and changes shift patterns and ETC. As a used purchase, I highly recommend one and let someone else take the depreciation hit.

I've been driving my Jeep SRT for almost three years now and I absolutely love it! I usually switch vehicles every three or four years, but I don't think I'll be doing that anytime soon. Performance tires only last 17k miles, but that's just how it is with performance tires. I swapped them out for far cheaper performance tires that last twice as long and it's been great. I've only had to do oil changes and tire rotations otherwise. It's still decently fast and sounds awesome! My fastest time is still 4.3 seconds, although the computer shows 3.8 after the last upgrade. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my Jeep. When I was originally looking for a luxury SUV, I considered the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5 M, but I couldn't justify spending almost 60K for an X3 M-Sport. I also looked at the Audi SQ5 and a used X5M, but I couldn't stand the snobby dealers with their nose in the air. Eventually, I ran into the Jeep SRT and it was the perfect fit for me. Not only is it the most appealing of the luxury SUVs, but the new interior for 2014 was bar none the best. Perhaps Audi and BMW can take a lesson from this. And it is FAST! I love that it's only marginally 'slower' than a Cayenne Turbo S that costs more than 2X! I DID 0-60 in 4.3 SEC! You decide if that's slow! I love my SRT and I'm looking forward to many more years with it!

Your 2014 GC limited 3.6 sounds like an amazing car! It's great to hear that it has served you and your wife so well, even with 104,000 miles on it. It's impressive that you only needed to replace the radiator at 98,000 miles, and that you haven't had to do any other major repairs. Running Mobil 1 is a smart choice, and I'm sure it will help you get another 100K out of it. It's wonderful to hear that it's still going strong at 151,000 miles, and that you were able to get the brakes and oxygen sensors replaced at 140,000 miles. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

My wife used to own a 2005 Grand Cherokee Hemi, which was a great handling and fast car. However, little things broke almost on a monthly basis. She now has a 2015 Explorer Limited, and I recently picked up a silver Grand Cherokee Limited! She is a bit jealous of the handling of my 2014 JGC. It is very comfortable and drives well. Contrary to what other people say, I love the nav and touch screen. The 2014-15 shifter takes a bit of getting used to, but it's not a real problem. The fit and finish in mine is superb. Moreover, the price was very cheap on the used car market. So, after two weeks, it is still running like new and has over 100K miles. The gas mileage is 20+ combined, and I am a very happy camper!

I recently switched to a 2014 Grand Cherokee - Overland Edition from driving 4-Runners for years, and I must say, I am loving the luxury and smooth ride. Living in upstate New York, I only need 4WD a dozen or so days a year, but on those heavy snow days, I do miss the clearance of the 4 Runner. Last winter, I got my Jeep stuck twice, but it probably had more to do with the low profile tires than the 4WD. Luckily, I was able to dig myself out and sit on heated seats and grab a warm steering wheel, which are my two favorite features. However, I do have a complaint about the Navigation System. I would recommend skipping this option and buying a GPS since the Chrysler navigation system WILL get you lost. I've even been directed to turn up one-way streets in the wrong direction! Plus, if you are driving, you cannot enter addresses into the system, and the voice recognition is completely useless. The first time it understands an address I give it will be the first time in over a year it's ever understood an address. It's no Siri!! If Jeep can fix the navigation and voice recognition system, I would definitely buy another Grand Cherokee. The last recall to fix the car from not being in park when shut off was a setback to how the transmission handles. 1st to 2nd gear is terrible now.

The first 3 gears shift quite hard, which can be uncomfortable. I took my car to the dealer 3 times, but unfortunately, they couldn't find a solution and said it's normal. After researching online, I found out that many 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners have faced this issue. Even the service guys at 2 dealerships acknowledged the problem, but Jeep says it's normal. As someone who has been driving for 22 years and travels for work, I can say that this problem is unlike any other I've experienced in any other car. Additionally, I've had some trouble with the GPS and voice controls, and the system doesn't work with messaging and iPhones, which can be frustrating. I hope Jeep can find a solution to these issues soon.

Hello there! I wanted to share an update on my experience with the 2014 JGC Diesel. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with my car, which has been in the shop 5-6 times despite having only around 9K miles. The last few visits were related to the diesel engine, including a cracked pipe that caused exhaust fumes to spread. It's a real shame because I had been eagerly waiting to buy this car for years. I hope Chrysler can improve its build quality and reliability, and offer better options for those who end up with lemons. For now, I am considering the lemon law route. Thank you for reading and please take care!

I currently own a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 and unfortunately, I have had a lot of issues with it. The car has stalled multiple times, the touch screen radio goes blank, and the turn signals get stuck on while driving. Additionally, the shifter gets stuck in neutral, the transmission jerks, and the back tires kick. While I have had a negative experience with this car, I would caution anyone looking to purchase a Jeep Grand Cherokee to do their research and make an informed decision. It's important to prioritize safety and reliability when making a purchase.

I recently sold my '14 Jeep GC, which was my first American car in 20 years. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the biggest $50K mistake of my life. However, I replaced it with a Lexus NX that I am confident will give me no trouble. During the first 10 weeks of owning the Jeep, I experienced several issues, including a black dashboard and poor service from the service department. I had to take it back to the shop every few months for other issues, including rear shock failure at 16K miles that caused daily creaking and clunking in the rear end. Despite being marketed as 'the most awarded SUV,' it was a complete piece of junk. The old Jeep Service Dept. was not meant for a luxury vehicle experience and looked like a Kmart, whereas the new Lexus Service Dept. treats me like royalty and is a beautiful place. Although I took a loss, I am so glad to be rid of it. I felt sad because it looked good, but it just didn't run well and ate gas like no other car I've owned. I will be cautious about buying American cars in the future, but I believe they can build good cars. Beware of the issues I experienced with my Jeep, and make sure to do your research before making a purchase.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2014 Jeep GC. Unfortunately, I had some issues with it right after I drove it off the lot. The steering wheel was misaligned and the car pulled to the left on the highway. Despite multiple attempts to fix it, the issue persisted. Additionally, the engine light kept turning on and off, and the transmission wouldn't go into reverse gear. It was definitely frustrating, and I wouldn't recommend buying a Jeep GC based on my experience. In fact, the transmission had to be replaced by the dealer before I even hit 10k miles. Thanks for listening!
