2006 Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.
Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-26
- VIN: 1J4HR58N46C
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: On this vehicle both front eat seatbelt receivers are faulty. This was not caused by an accident or excessive wear of the seatbelts. When you push the seatbelt into the receiver, it will not accept the seatbelt without first pushing down on the seatbelt button. Additionally, the vehicle does not recognize when the seatbelts are in use and the light on the dash stays on regardless. This issue started some time ago, however, more recently (past 3 weeks) the airbag light started coming on intermittently. I took the vehicle to a shop (not a dealer) and they diagnosed the airbag light as being caused by the driver's side seatbelt retractor spring malfunction. They were unable to repair and directed me to a dealer. Upon contacting the dealer they are only offering replacement of the seatbelts faulty seatbelts as customers expense. I have contacted Dodge customer service and asked what assistance they my provide. That issues is currently open under case number 89679478.

I don't want my grandchildren & I to die because we can't get out in fire or flood. I bought the car used at 84,000 miles and would never have thought to check door handle cups until a pieces of one fell out Probably why he sold it to me with such low miles

I turned it off when I reached the shoulder, waited about a minute then turned the car on again. I am grateful my daughter and I are still alive. I've had it in the repair shop for a month. They replaced the brake system and dealt with grounding issues but, they cannot figure out why it keeps happening. This is a very serious issue and I see that others have complained about it. Yes, the car is old and has over 175,000 miles on it but I see that this is a common problem so it should be addressed.

- Components: POWER TRAIN,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Car is currently parked: I own a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado which Jeep claims has no recalls yet there (3) all of which are happening to my vehicle. NHTSA 07V434000, 13V175000 and 14V438000. My car is very well maintained I have reached out to Jeep and claim my truck was not recalled yet my TRUCK is listed as having (6) recalls all of which are issues the truck is currently having. I have computer codes to prove it. I understand my truck have 150,000 miles and is 16 almost 17 years old however it was bought as an investment that Jeep seems to selectively correct issues only when they are threatened to be sued. This is totally ridiculous. There are multiple complaints from other owners. These things should have been recalled years ago. My vehicle has never been modified and we should not have to be responsible for recalls that are selectively being fixed when there are over 6000 complaints. Thank you

- VIN: 1J4GS48K96C
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The vehicle's gauges will turn off while driving randomly. The speedometer, odometer, tachometer, fuel gauge will all zero out for unspecified amounts of time. Sometimes 10 seconds, other times until the vehicle is started back up. This occurs when the vehicle is in motion. So, is very dangerous. Sometimes it causes the car to completely shut off and come back on. While shut off, the car sounds like it is struggling to continue its forward progress. This happens occasionally. Once the car corrects itself, the check engine light appears. After starting the car 2-3 times, the misfire corrects itself. I did a previous report related to the air bag light is on, but not sure if it is related with the same electrical problem.

- Summary: There wasn’t an accident while driving my vehicle (thank god). My key stopped working for my ignition. I had an ignition recall on my vehicle (as to what the dealership told me). My vehicle has now been with the dealership since around Christmas maybe even a little bit before that. They did my ignition recall as to what was wrong with the vehicle. So they say.. it was towed in because it would not turn over.. they gave me a new key and put in a “new ignition” and still would not turn over. The dealership said my key would not flash over with the computer? Also, stating I needed a new skim module. Which they stated that Chrysler discontinued that part. I was not offered a rental.. which is fine I guess.. I’m a single mother of two kids. It has now been about four months about. I have never had in my life had the problems that I do now. My job is about to fire me, completely. The problems that I have had getting my children to and from school and doctor appointments, etc. I’m really at a loss for words. My vehicle had no problem starting before the ignition - key - issue. I really don’t know what else to do.

- VIN: 1J8HS68276C
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: The Jeep dealer replaced my ignition switch that was part of the 2014 ignition switch recall. My Jeep continues to lose power after successfully turning on. It will turn on for a less than one minute, all the lights on the dash board will turn on, and the engine will have sudden loss of power. It can take up to an hour to get it to turn back on without it losing power again. If driven after it turn on without waiting at least 2 minutes, the car will suddenly lose power while in drive. This has been happening on an almost daily basis since 2019, which resulted in it being parked in the driveway for 6 months for fear it would turn off while driving on the freeway.

Within a minute or 2 then it’s ok, I can step on it. Bought car during winter in cold weather no problem it’s great. Summer came and started noticing the laziness and hesitancy. 2006 Jeep Grand cherokee recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2006 Jeep Grand cherokee.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
- Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

This is my third Jeep and I'm so glad to say that this one is my favorite. I have an 8 cylinder Laredo and I couldn't be happier with the engine power.
-
'06 model is a great mid-sized SUV with a lot of positive features. While there is room for improvement in the fit and finish of the interior materials and the horsepower of the V6 model, the ride is nice and the stereo system sounds great. The leather seats are also durable over time, which is a great plus. Additionally, the V6 model gets excellent MPG for an SUV, with 19-20 mixed driving and 22-24 highway driving. Overall, this is a really nice mid-sized SUV.
-
I have the Limited with the 5.7L Hemi, and I was pleasantly surprised by the gas mileage for a vehicle of that size with an engine of that size. I usually get about 17-18 mpg. With my previous vehicle being a 300 hp Mustang GT, I wasn't expecting to get that type of speed from an SUV but the Hemi comes close. It has a lot of features that I would expect from a vehicle that cost $20k more such as automatic climate control, auto wipers, and auto high beams.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your Jeep! It's great to know that it has been super reliable and able to handle any conditions. Keep up with the regular maintenance and it should continue to serve you well!
-

My 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is currently in the shop for the eighth time in the 2.5 years that I have owned it. Despite being a low mileage driver, with only 13,000 miles in 2.5 years, I have had to make a trip to the dealer every 1625 miles for service. This is unacceptable, especially considering that I have had to bring it in four times for the exact same recurring issue. While I love this car for its size, handling, features, and value for money, its reliability has been a major disappointment. As someone who used to exclusively own Japanese cars, I was initially hesitant to purchase a Jeep, but my husband, a Jeep enthusiast, convinced me to give it a try. Unfortunately, my experience with this car has only reinforced my belief that Japanese cars are superior.

After just 5 months, I found myself stranded with a broken-down car and a hefty $3500.00 transmission repair bill. During the test drive, I heard a concerning clunk when shifting gears, but the salesman assured me it was just a broken motor mount. Unfortunately, my mechanic discovered a significant amount of metal in the electronic part of the transmission, which was the real cause of the problem. It seems that ADVANTAGE BMW Midtown may have been aware of these transmission issues and failed to disclose them to me as the consumer. It's important to be cautious when making purchases like this to avoid unnecessary expenses.

I really appreciate the navigation, heated seats, and dvd player, but I would definitely trade them all for the upgraded 4 wheel drive system. In my experience, the Quadra-Drive 1 is not the best choice, as I even got stuck in a small snow drift. If you're considering a Jeep, I highly recommend the Quadra-Trac over the Quadra-Drive!

I was disappointed with the quality of the jeep considering the amount of money I spent. Unfortunately, I had to take it in for work frequently during the 3 years I owned it. The transmission, suspension, and even the steering rack needed repairs at just 40k miles. Additionally, the interior plastic felt very cheap and scratched easily. The gas mileage was also not great. If you have kids, it may not be the best choice as the back seat is not suitable for child seats. We had to keep our kids in my wife's smaller car until they outgrew their car seats. Lastly, it did not perform well off-road and parts broke easily. Overall, I am not satisfied with this car and am currently trying to sell it.

The car started off fine but is now troubled with electrical problems. It constantly gives a transmission over temp alarm even after start up. The ESM is messing up causing erratic shifting. Since the n23 recall, I have a service 4wd system alarm that shows up every start up and does not let me engage 4 low. To replace the ESM, it's going to cost over $700, and it's such a common problem that it should be recalled. I'm disappointed with this experience and it has led me to decide that this will be my last Chrysler product.
