1993 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common 1993 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee, first introduced in 1993, has been a popular midsize SUV, but it has also been associated with certain common problems, particularly in its earlier model years. In this article, we will focus on the 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee and discuss some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners.

  • Death Wobble: The death wobble is a term used by Jeep owners to describe a situation where the front axle begins violently oscillating, causing the vehicle to shake or wobble uncontrollably. This issue is often associated with the 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee models and can be caused by various factors, such as worn-out steering components, misaligned wheels, or damaged suspension parts.
  • Rear Impact Fire Defect: This problem is related to the gas tank's position in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is particularly vulnerable to being punctured during a rear-impact accident. In such cases, leaking fuel and sparks caused by collisions can easily lead to a fire. This issue has been reported in various Grand Cherokee models, including the 1993 version.
  • Engine Stalls or Shuts Off While Driving: Several 1993 Grand Cherokee owners have reported engine stalls or shut-offs while driving. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as electrical problems, faulty sensors, or issues with the fuel system. In some cases, this problem can be addressed by replacing certain components or updating the vehicle's software, but it can also be a sign of more serious underlying issues.
  • Suspension Problems: Suspension issues are another common problem reported by 1993 Grand Cherokee owners. These problems can manifest in various ways, such as uneven tire wear, poor handling, or a rough ride. Suspension issues can be caused by worn-out components, damaged parts, or improper maintenance, and they can significantly impact the vehicle's performance and safety.
  • Electrical Problems: Electrical issues are a common theme in complaints about the 1993 Grand Cherokee. These problems can range from minor inconveniences, such as malfunctioning lights or radios, to more serious issues, such as electrical system failures or engine stalls. Electrical problems can be caused by various factors, such as faulty wiring, damaged components, or software glitches.

In conclusion, the 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been associated with several common problems, including the death wobble, rear impact fire defect, engine stalls or shut-offs, suspension issues, and electrical problems. While these issues can be frustrating and potentially dangerous, they can often be addressed through proper maintenance, repairs, or updates. However, it is essential for owners to be aware of these issues and to take appropriate action to ensure their safety and the longevity of their vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-09-28
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1J4FT68S3PL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I OWN A 1993 JEEP CHEROKEE AND THE FRONT BRAKE CALIPER ON THE DRIVER SIDE LOCKED UP ON JULY 4, 2017, WHILE DRIVING AROUND TOWN, ABOUT 15 MINUTES AFTER BEING STARTED, WITHOUT ANY HARD BRAKING. THE NEXT DAY THE CALIPER WAS REPLACED. TODAY, 9/28/2017, WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED ABOUT 20 MINUTES AFTER CAR BEING STARTED TO DRIVE TO WORK, A SHIMMY DEVELOPED. WHEN I GOT TO WORK A FEW MILES LATER, THE CALIPER WAS LOCKED AGAIN AND WAS SMOKING. IN 1998, WHILE DRIVING MY FATHER'S 1993 JEEP CHEROKEE (NOT THE SAME ONE I NOW OWN), THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT BRAKE CALIPER LOCKED ONTO THE TIRE AND CAUSED A LOT OF SMOKE. I ASSUMED IT WAS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AT THE TIME. I UNDERSTAND THAT THINGS WILL GO WRONG WITH OLDER VEHICLES IN THE NORMAL COURSE OF BEING USED AND BECOMING WORN, BUT THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON POINT OF FAILURE ON THIS PARTICULAR MODEL AND YEAR THAT STARTED HAPPENING WHEN THE VEHICLES WERE STILL RELATIVELY NEW. BRAKE PROBLEMS ARE AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS THING TO OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLES IN QUESTION, AND THE PUBLIC AT LARGE, SO I FEEL THIS MERITS BEING REPORTED BECAUSE EVERYTHING ELSE ABOUT THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN STRONG AND RELIABLE, AND I STILL SEE SO MANY OF THEM OUT ON THE HIGHWAYS AND CITY STREETS. I CLICKED "NEXT" AND ONE OF THE QUESTIONS IS, "WAS THERE A FIRE?" I AM GOING TO CLICK YES BECAUSE THERE WAS A COPIOUS AMOUNT OF SMOKE BUT WANT TO CLARIFY HERE THAT THERE WERE NO FLAMES THAT I SAW.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-11-23
  • VIN: 1J4GZ78S3PC
  • Components: STEERING

THE PLASTIC PIN IN MY VEHICLE WAS NOT PRESENT AND THERE WAS NOTHING PREVENTING THE UPPER AND LOWER STEERING SHAFTS FROM SEPARATING, CAUSING COMPLETE LOSS OF CONTROL OF STEERING. THERE COULD BE A FATAL ACCIDENT RESULTING IN THIS IF THE SHAFTS SEPARATED WHILE DRIVING. THE RECALL SHOULD STILL BE PENDING FOR ALL 1993 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEES. IT IS UNREASONABLE FOR CHRYSLER TO CEASE THIS RECALL, AS IT IS VERY LIKELY TO CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY IF WOULD OCCUR. *TR

Negative 1993 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

  1. Tyreek Rodriguez 2024-08-25

It's great to hear that you find the car enjoyable to drive!

  2. Jedediah Rutherford 2024-04-22

I'm glad to hear that you haven't encountered any issues with it so far. Overall, I'm impressed with it as well. However, I do understand your concern about the gas mileage being quite poor.

  3. Billy Weber 2024-04-13

This vehicle overall has performed just above average. The JGC is a high maintenance vehicle, but to reduce problems over the life of the Jeep, I have had the front/rear/transfer case and transmission fluids changed several times. Also, the transfer case viscous couple was replaced (under warranty), fuel pump and filter, major tune up at 96k, and injector replaced. The Jeep rides well, and both the interior and exterior parts seem to hold up well.

  4. Stuart Leuschke 2024-04-06

I purchased my vehicle with 92,000 miles on it and have since put 55,000 more miles on it. Despite some challenges, I absolutely love my Jeep! While some people prefer the Grand Cherokee, I am perfectly content with my choice. I have invested around $25,000 in my Jeep, which includes repairs and replacement of parts. Although I have encountered some issues with gas mileage and oil leaks, I have been able to address these problems. If I were to fix every single issue with my vehicle, I would have invested around $40,000, which is comparable to the price of a top-of-the-line brand new Grand Cherokee Limited from 2003.

  5. Brody Trantow 2024-03-24

Your vehicle is definitely a blast to drive! It's fast and fun, and can handle any terrain. The only thing to note is that it can be a bit noisy when accelerating and the shift patterns can feel a bit weird when passing. Overall, it's a great ride!

Positive 1993 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

  1. Ashton Fisher 2024-11-10

This vehicle is excellent! You can always count on it whenever you fire it up. Its design makes it easy to get in or out, and shopping is a breeze! There's lots of room for storage, and the handling is great! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an all-around 4-wheel SUV.

  2. Sigrid Gottlieb 2024-10-27

I bought my 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited (V8 5.2 L) in the summer of '02 with 96,000 miles on it from Valley Dodge in Boulder, CO. Unfortunately, it needed some repairs just two weeks after I bought it, including the starter and a couple of factory recall items. Over the years, I've had to fix a few other things like the Power Steering, Idle Motor, A/C Pump, Coolant Sensor, 4x4 Switch, Power Window Switch, Battery (2x), exterior Paint, and some minor interior items. Despite all of this, the engine has continued to run like a champ at 160K+ miles now - and not even an oil leak! The interior is loaded with features, and while some of them have broken over time, it's still an awesome car for city driving or off-roading. I would definitely recommend the Limited model over other models.

  3. Constantin Funk 2024-08-26

Overall, I absolutely love my JEEP! I bought it to fulfill my dream of owning a 4x4 V8 and a Jeep, and it has exceeded all my expectations. I've taken it all over and it has handled every terrain like a champ. I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

  4. Orville Hand 2024-07-20

I bought this vehicle on my 17th birthday and drove it for a month before experiencing an issue with the front right brakes. I took it back to the dealership and, after spending $1500, I had brand new motor mounts, brakes, track bars, and new bushings installed. Given that it had 140,000 miles on it, this was to be expected. However, it now drives like new and the V8 engine is awesome. I can easily beat those little wannabe Civics on the road. The only downside is the gas mileage, which I wish was better.

  5. Mario Hartmann 2024-07-06

Great off road capabilities. It's also pretty comfortable on the road, despite what some old editors may say. They might be used to their Cadillacs and not understand why a real truck would be a little harsher over the bumps than a car. However, it really beats all the wannabes from foreign and Ford. If you don't mind the kind of bad gas mileage, it's definitely the way to go.
