The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

- Summary: My 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee touch screen is delaminating. I have attempted to contact uConnect and Jeep. UConnect initially agreed to replace the screen free of charge after having it diagnosed, but once I had it diagnosed and called back uConnect claimed the first representative that approved the replacement was wrong and now refuses to rectify the situation. The screen has "ghost" touches - basically selecting options by itself, and the back up camera delays or freezes some of the time, not displaying the live video. The dealer diagnosed the delamination. There were no warnings or other indications of a problem. I only learned what was causing these issues by googling the bubbles in my screen. Based on the research I've done since, it appears this problem will get worse, changing climate control settings, system settings, heater settings, entertainment (radio) settings, and "drive mode" type settings eventually. I have seen so many posts on it spanning multiple models and model years, all related to the same problem with the same symptoms, it should really qualify for a recall. I am afraid to let my soon-to-be 16 yr old drive my car because of the distraction this defect can cause, and there is no prevention or reasonable remedy. The screen has not been intentionally damaged, no wipes or other products have been used on it regularly, and it is kept garaged when it is not being driven. The vehicle is used in a normal manner -driving to/from work and practice on city streets and highways, and is not subject to abuse. From my research it is a manufacturer's defect in the screen itself, which can only be avoided or resolved by replacing the unit. If owners don't cause the issue, and can't prevent it by any kind of regular maintenance, training, or care, then it isn't an issue owners should suffer safety concerns or financial obligations over.

- Summary: I am reporting significant safety issues with my 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited X. - Summary: The front glass panel of the panoramic sunroof spontaneously shattered. The car was going approximately 45-50 mph when a loud "bang" was heard. Broken glass could be heard inside the closed sunroof liner. Upon inspection, there was no physical damage to the front end of the car, hood, or roof indicating that something may have struck the car. An inspection of the sunroof showed a sizable hole in the middle of the sunroof glass panel with accompanying cracks in the sunroof safety glass. The car can be inspected upon request. The safety of the driver and passengers could have been compromised if the sunroof shade/liner was retracted. - Summary: My driver and passenger side front seatbelts won't retract properly. Dealer just diagnosed the problem as a weak retractor. This will be the THIRD time the driver side has to be replaced since I bought the vehicle in May of 2020. It will be the SECOND time the passenger side has to be replaced. Jeep replaced both under warranty in Sept of 2021. Driver side was replaced in May of 2023 per Jeep goodwill. This time, I will have to pay for the passenger side but Mopar warranty should cover driver side as it is barely a year old seatbelt. No one i've consulted has ever had to replace their seatbelts even one time, much less three times in four years. This is a definite safety concern if the belts won't tighten up properly during normal driving or a collision situation. Jeep has recalled seat belts on Grand Cherokees up to 2015 but there have been no recent recalls i'm aware of.

- Summary: This is the fourth time this has happened. I am scheduled to have the dealership begin to trouble shoot the issue again tomorrow. Upon the second time I took the vehicle to the dealership. They were unable to replicate the issue having had it in their possession for two weeks. I was driving to work this morning, driving downhill, turned on my turn indicator to take a right onto a highway on ramp, when in the middle of the turn complete electrical and engine failure. The radio, headlamps, turn signal, brake lights, power assisted braking and engine all cut out. The hazards worked, but no dash light indicator lit up letting me know. Only the glowing flash on the side of the road let me know. The dash was completely blacked out except for "shift to park to start". The steering didn't lock up thankfully, while pulling over I attempted to shift to neutral and start while in motion, nothing. I succeeded in coming to a stop on the shoulder shifted to drive, and the vehicle started right up. There were,and are no warning lights illumenated.

On April 24, 2024 while driving home maybe 2 miles from home, I was lucky not to crash when losing steering response.A Warning Message appeared on the Speedo, stating, “POWER STEERING UNAVAILABLE SERVICE REQUIRED “. 28K miles is about 2,400 miles driven to date. I drove straight home and made an appointment for service. Koons Chevrolet where I bought the car performed diagnostic testing to determine Replacement of the Steering Gear RACK AND PINION would require replacement and the repair $5800 parts and labor. The module is internal and not serviceable therefore the Whole Steering Gear must be replaced. Cost is prohibitive for a fairly new vehicle.

- Summary: We were driving down the street and heard a loud noise almost like a gun shot. We thought something hit the windshield however there was nothing wrong with the windshield. We then noticed the sunroof blew out shattering the glass. The way the glass is protruding out indicates the sunroof blew out. It was not hit with anything causing the damage. If the glass was hit it would have been caved in. Luckily, we had the inside screen closed so that we were not hit with pieces of shattered glass. The sudden loud noise could have caused a major accident and the flying glass could have caused injuries to passengers. This is a safety issue. I contacted Jeep and they did not seem concerned by this and their agent actually hung up on me when I asked to speak with a manager! I have not taken the vehicle in for any repairs at this time. I was trying to see if Jeep was going to take care of the situation however it does not appear to be the case.

- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 2014-2019 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with 3.0L diesel engines. A high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure may introduce internal debris into the fuel system, potentially resulting in fuel starvation.
- Consequence: Fuel starvation may result in an unexpected loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the HPFP, and inspect and replace, if necessary, additional fuel system components, free of charge. Interim notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed July 21, 2022. Owner notification letters for were mailed for Jeep Grand Cherokee owners starting January 11, 2024. Owner notification letters for Ram 1500 owners were mailed March 7, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLS's number for this recall is Z46.

- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2020 Jeep Gladiator and Jeep Cherokee, 2019-2020 Ram 1500 Pickup, Ram 2500 Pickup, Ram 3500 Pickup, Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep Renegade and 2019 Dodge Challenger vehicles equipped with 8.4" or 12" radio displays. A software error can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."
- Consequence: The lingering rearview image can distract the driver, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler has notified owners, and dealers will update the radio display software, free of charge. Optionally, owners can choose to remotely update their software via an Over-The-Air (OTA) update available as of May 1, 2020. The recall began April 27, 2020. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is W30-W37.

I've owned three Jeeps before purchasing this one (CJ7, TJ, JK Unlimited Rubicon), so I'm no stranger to the Jeep brand. During a recent vacation, I rented a Grand Cherokee and drove it for over 2,000 miles in two weeks. I absolutely fell in love with it! The Grand Cherokee is an excellent touring SUV - it's incredibly comfortable, has good acceleration, and is very spacious. We decided to purchase a Laredo Altitude 4x4 with many of the upgrades I wanted for our touring SUV, and after only a couple of hundred miles, I'm confident that I made the right choice. Initially, I wanted the Trail Hawk, but I realized that 90% of my driving is on the road, and my severe off-roading days are over. So, I opted for the more road-friendly version, but still with the upgraded 4WD system.

Great features! The only drawback is that the MPG is 18 & 25. However, it has a smooth ride and a nice interior.

If you're considering a 2020 Grand Cherokee, it's important to be aware of some potential issues that may arise. In my experience, I encountered a number of problems, including the need for EGR cooler and EGR valve replacement, both banks camshaft replacement and repair, stop/start malfunctions, and headlight replacement. While these repairs can be costly, it's important to address them in a timely manner to ensure the longevity of your vehicle. However, if you're looking for a car with a proven track record of reliability, I highly recommend considering an Acura. In my 7 years of owning a 2013 MDX, I never experienced any issues beyond routine maintenance such as oil changes, brakes, and tires.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my new car. Unfortunately, I've been having some issues with cabin noises and poor assembly, as well as some electronic bugs like a frozen screen, check engine light, and sunroof control problems. Additionally, the suspension is very bumpy and stiff, similar to a sporty BMW on run flats, but with poor steering. I've also had some trouble with the service being unreliable and low quality. Before making a purchase, I highly recommend checking out some Jeep forums to see what other owners are saying. It seems like there are quite a few complaints out there! While I've had some frustrations, I do want to note that Jeep has been responsive to my concerns and has been working to address them. Thanks for listening!

This car has had some issues with its electrical system, safety features, and other components. However, these problems have been resolved after some time. The dealership initially claimed that there was nothing wrong with the system, but the issues persisted for several months. The sunroof leak was also a minor inconvenience that was eventually fixed. While the high beam headlights are not very effective, the car is equipped with optional driving lights that provide better visibility. The navigation system could use some updating, but it still functions adequately. The gas mileage is not as good as some other vehicles in its class, but it is still reasonable. Overall, this car has its flaws, but it is still a reliable and functional vehicle.
