Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

After taking in for service, I was told that the problem was the alternator which would have caught fire or failed without warning increasing the risk of a crash. Upon learning it was the alternator I discovered that there were 2 separate recalls (P60 and & T36) for defective alternators for 2012-2014 vehicles. "The alternator diodes on your vehicle may experience a rapid failure. Variability in the failure mode ranges from no output, reduced output, and/or a fully shorted to ground condition. Depending on the alternator failure mode and timing, vehicle electrical system voltage may drop to critical levels, disabling systems such as Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electronic Control Module (ECM), and/or the Central Body Controller (CBC). The driver will have limited or no detection of the alternator failing, which can result in vehicle shutdown while driving and/or an underhood electrical fire." Something terrible could have happened to my wife. Thankfully it did not. When I was told that my vehicle was not included because it is a 2011 I was angry and frustrated which is why I am reporting this to you. I am questioning why the NHTSA - would not include 2011 vehicles in the safety recall as the problem with the alternator is the same. Am I supposed to believe that the defective alternator in my vehicle is not the same as the ones that are in the 2012 when they are having the exact same problem? Along with the anger I feel because of the danger it posed to my family, I am equally frustrated that the repair is not covered under the costly repair because my VIN didn't not fall under the recall.

- Summary: When I went out to my car the morning of [XXX], 2024, I noticed that the passenger headrest was disconnected from the back and had been deployed without reason overnight. There was no accident or contact with the car it just did it on it's own. Luckily no one was in the car so there was no injury caused. I was advised by the local Jerry Ulm Jeep dealership in Tampa that their was an extended warranty for this issue that expired in 2021. I did not receive any correspondence so this was the first time hearing of this issue. From looking online it looks like it is a very widespread safety issue. I contacted Jeep directly to request approval for reimbursement before getting the car repaired but was denied. As mentioned, this problem occurred out of nowhere and is clearly due to faulty manufacturing and could have caused serious injury if someone was in the passengers seat. I would like for Jeep to be held accountable for this and to be reimbursed for the associated cost to get this fixed. - Summary: Greetings, after 3 dealership attempts to correct the TIPM - NHTSA 19V813000 recall, my Jeep still stalled 4 times at highway speeds. I narrowly averted being rearended several times. I am terrified to drive the vehicle! I have yet another dealership appointment Friday, January 12, 2024 to correct the issue. Previous visits could not reproduce the problem or show any code errors. There were no warnings at all during these malfunctions, only the loss of braking and power steering did I realize the vehicle had stalled. Are there any remedies afforded to me at this point from Chrysler? The vehicle has only 124,000 miles. I've been extremely lucky that I haven't crashed or injured another party to date, but I fear it could happen at any time since this is my only transportation to and from work.

The fuel pump relay inside the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM-7) may fail, causing the vehicle to stall without warning.

I'm glad to hear that you've driven about 5,000 miles with no complaints and that the vehicle is everything you had hoped for. It's great to hear that the mileage is almost exactly as promised, averaging 20 to 22 for your type of mostly rural driving. The V6 is very smooth and quiet and gets the job done just fine, even though you don't do any towing. I understand that the MPG readout is a bit optimistic. Unlike your old CR-V, the JGC is quiet enough for front and back seat occupants to carry on a conversation. I personally like the firmness of the seats, but I can understand why some may feel they are too firm. Overall, the quality is superb with little road noise and no squeaks or rattles. As an active duty military member, I recently wanted to buy a vehicle for my wife. I had my eyes set on a new GMC Terrain or a new Ford Explorer, and I even considered the AUDI Q5. However, I am thrilled that I came across the commercials and reviews of the new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is truly an amazing vehicle. I ended up purchasing the Overland 4x4 V8 Hemi engine, and I must say that it is incredibly smooth to drive and has great gas mileage for a V8 (21 hwy). The quality and workmanship of this Jeep is superior to any luxury SUV on the market. Even if you compare it to a Porsche Cayenne S, you would end up paying so much more for the same features. This Jeep is worth every penny and much more. Needless to say, my wife is over the moon with it!

Overall, it was a great vehicle that we owned for eight years. Although there were a couple of recalls, they were promptly addressed, and the leather dash issue was resolved under warranty. Around the six-year mark, some of the interior dash/door wood trim came off in the heat, but it was a minor issue. The seats were incredibly comfortable, and even after eight years, the leather still looked brand new. We had the 5.7L Hemi, which made for a smooth driving experience (2 wheel drive), although the mileage could have been better (we got 21 on the road).

I purchased this vehicle used a month ago and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with its style, performance, size, and fuel economy. The only aspect that I found to be mediocre is the driver's cockpit. After selling my old boxy JGC, I almost didn't feel like I had a Jeep anymore. This vehicle rides like a luxury SUV, it's quiet and smooth. Although it is larger than the older JGC, it still manages to impress with its powerful V6 engine. I am getting an astonishing 27 mpg on highways (I drive about 70mph but I am careful to keep the speed steady). I haven't taken it off-road yet, but I am curious to see how nimble it will be with its hulking size and heavier weight.

I'm glad to hear that you are overall happy with your car. However, you mentioned that you wish you had bought the V8 instead of the V6. It seems like the engine is struggling to move the 2200 kg weight in city driving, but performs better on the highway as long as you avoid hills. Additionally, you mentioned that the 5 speed auto transmission is geared too high and that having at least 6 gears would make driving more enjoyable. While gas consumption was good initially, it seems to have decreased to 20 City and 23 Highway after 12000 miles/19000 km. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I purchased this car based on its styling and perceived luxury at an affordable price point. However, I have experienced some issues with the car. The leather dash bubbled up, even though I always garage the car at work and home. Additionally, the interior trim is peeling off, and both A/C vent control actuators are broken. The hydraulic engine mounts leaked, and a Jeep mechanic told me that they were terrible. The car also won't start due to a faulty TIPM controller, which thankfully is now a recall. The UConnect system is also faulty, as it resets when I back up, losing the rear camera. The door lock motor had to be replaced, and there was a leak in the motor that was replaced under warranty. While I am disappointed and embarrassed that a US company can build such a car and charge so much, I will not buy a Jeep again. If you are considering purchasing one, I recommend getting the best warranty they have or, as I told my friend, buying a spare car for when it's in the shop.

I experienced four warranty issues within one year, including torn weatherstripping, radiator replacement, and a malfunctioning media center. Despite contacting the dealer and Chrysler Customer Service, I did not receive any satisfactory assistance. The keyless entry fob issue remains unresolved. It is clear that improvements are needed in the warranty and customer service departments to better address customer concerns.

As a five-time Jeep owner, I recently leased a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with warning lights blinking, difficulty starting the car, and a malfunctioning rear camera. After taking it in for service, I was informed that it was a motherboard issue, but thankfully it was covered under warranty. However, I was disappointed to learn that it would take two weeks to receive the necessary parts and that I would not be provided with a rental car. As a paying customer, it is frustrating to have a car out of commission for two weeks due to a warranted issue and not receive any assistance with a rental car. This experience has left me questioning the value of a warranty and has unfortunately led me to decide that this will be my last time owning a Jeep.
