2004 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1j8gw68j04c
  • Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: On 10/21/21 myself and my child (rear passenger in booster safety seat) were in a solo vehicle accident that resulted in our vehicle hitting an embankment before rolling 3x landing on the wheels again in the right position on the same side of vehicle we originally had impact. We were less than 1 mile from our home, headed to school, there was no unsafe conditions, and I don't have any memory of the morning or accident due to severe injury and brain injury, but there's no reason or logical reason for me to be driving in the manner or at the speeds that I was. I passed a car in front of me on a very rural road right as we came upon the almost figure 8 curves on a road I drive everyday. The people I passed and many witnesses including my small child stated that I was gaining more speed as we came to the sharp curves, I crashed at approximately 65-70mph on a 30mph road, there were no brake marks or any sign of an attempt to slow down on my part, but I have too wonder because I am not sure anything that would have made me want to drive that recklessly, especially when I had my child in the vehicle. My child was asked what was happening before we wrecked and she said she heard a pop sound? And I said "oh [XXX]", that was the last thing that happened. We rolled 3x with not one airbag deploying, and the way that the jeep is caved in, I am very much interested in this model being looked over for structural flaws, pictures will be provided. 2015-10-19
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured March 29, 2003, to July 3, 2003, and 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured May 27, 2003, to May 20, 2004. Due to electrical noise beyond the tolerance of the air bag electronic control module (ECM), a component in the ECM may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.
  • Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag electronic control module and the side impact sensors, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on May 5, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R60.

Negative 2004 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

  1. Mac Satterfield 2024-11-04

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 4th jeep. I've owned a '92 Cherokee, a '98 Grand Cherokee, and a '99 Grand Cherokee in the past. While I do feel that the performance of this car is a bit weak compared to my '99, I must say that the interior design and features are really nice. Unfortunately, I have had a gasket problem since I got it and have had to take it in several times over the past 5 years for air conditioning problems and transmission slippage. Overall, I still enjoy driving my jeep and appreciate its features.

Until the release of the 2011 Grand Cherokee, I always believed that the 2004 model was the most attractive of the best-looking body styles. It boasts a sturdy suspension and aggressive approach and departure angles, making it ideal for off-roading, although most drivers use it as a daily commuter. The Overland's interior is particularly impressive, with unique styling and a very pleasant feel. The engine and exhaust note are both excellent, and it feels more powerful and faster than its 265 bhp rating suggests. Additionally, it has a good towing capacity of 5000 lbs, which is hardly noticeable.

Sorry to hear about the issues you've had with your vehicle. It sounds like you've had a frustrating experience. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration. Is there anything else we can do to assist you?

  4. Jeffrey D'Amore 2024-06-12

I paid for numerous repairs on this car, including a faulty radiator, brake calipers, two engine fans, ignition coil, camshaft sensor, wiring harness, engine computer, engine oil cap, power window motors, and insulation on all the doors. Unfortunately, the driver's seat became detached from the track, which was my personal favorite. Despite the poor gas mileage, I was willing to overlook it if the cost of repairs wasn't so high. In the end, the cost of repairs exceeded the initial purchase price of the car.

  5. Van Lakin 2024-05-19

I purchased a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland in 2005 with only 22,000 miles on it. Despite being fully loaded, the SUV cost me over $43,000. Unfortunately, I encountered some issues early on, such as leaking axle seals and rear shocks. At 36,200 miles, just 200 miles outside of the warranty, I experienced a series of problems. The starter failed, the factory CD player stopped working, and the power windows and door locks ceased to function. Despite having to repair these issues multiple times, no Jeep dealership was willing to help. I also had to replace nearly every component in the front and rear end of the vehicle. The infamous 'death wobble' was also a major issue, causing the front end to feel unstable at around 45 mph. The front fenders and rocker panels have rotted out, and the frame and other major components seem to be made of heavy gauge sheet steel that is prone to rusting. The transmission started slipping at 117,000 miles. I am looking forward to getting rid of this vehicle, as it has been a frustrating experience. I would not recommend purchasing a Jeep, as this has been the worst vehicle I have owned in 50 years. It was grossly overpriced and has been nothing but a headache. This will be my last Jeep.

Positive 2004 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

  1. Jarod McDermott 2024-11-21

My boyfriend got me this car as a gift and I absolutely love it! The only issue I've had so far was when it snowed and I was trying to get out of my parking spot, the ABS & brake light came on and I freaked out. I quickly ran upstairs to read my manual and thought it was going to be a nightmare. However, to my surprise, after a couple of days when the snow subsided and I drove to the gas station, the lights went off. What a big sigh of relief! City miles can be tough since I live in NY, but when I travel on the highway, the mileage is fantastic. So, especially in the city, I drive in overdrive to optimize gas mileage. I love this body model and don't care for the 2005 or 2006 model styles as they look boxy.

  2. Geo Swaniawski 2024-11-21

Your Jeep is amazing! It runs without any problems and the interior is nice. The exterior is even better! It's such a fun vehicle to drive. The whole performance of the car is great. Why not grab a Jeep or test drive one and see for yourself?

  3. Roel Walsh 2024-10-14

This has been a great vehicle so far. We've put 1300 miles on it in the month that we've owned it and have averaged 17.8 mpg with the V8 in a mix of city and highway driving. Our biggest complaint so far comes from a kid who accidentally put a door ding in it on the third day of ownership. However, the dealership we purchased the vehicle from was very pleasant to deal with, especially after being lied to by a Mitsubishi dealer. The Jeep handles well on the open highway and has a tight turning radius for parking lots. It has ample power and torque from the V8 and is quiet at highway speeds. The 5-speed transmission always seems to be in the right gear for the situation.

  4. Hubert Waelchi 2024-10-06

This is my third Jeep Grand Cherokee and I must say, they are fantastic vehicles. I always opt for the V-8 power and the one mpg difference is definitely worth it. My previous two Jeeps both went up to 145,000 miles with no issues and this one is following in their footsteps. I have not had to take my Jeep to the dealership since I bought it (37,000 miles) except for routine maintenance. It is a joy to drive and very responsive. Plus, in the snow, nothing beats a Jeep 4x4. People always compliment me on how great it looks. If anyone tells you that Jeeps have problems, don't believe them. I wouldn't drive anything else.

  5. Candido Yundt 2024-10-02

I loved my jeep! It was such a reliable SUV and I always felt safe driving it. I didn't have any complaints about it and only needed to get oil changes before trading it in. It drove really nicely, especially in the snow!
