Audi AG (German: ⓘ) is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, Audi produces vehicles in nine production facilities worldwide.

The origins of the company are complex, dating back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Auto Union was acquired by Volkswagen from Daimler-Benz. After relaunching the Audi brand with the 1965 introduction of the Audi F103 series, Volkswagen merged Auto Union with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969, thus creating the present-day form of the company.

The company name is based on the Latin translation of the surname of the founder, August Horch. Horch, meaning "listen", becomes audi in Latin. The four rings of the Audi logo each represent one of four car companies that banded together to create Audi's predecessor company, Auto Union. Audi's slogan is Vorsprung durch Technik, which is translated as "Progress through Technology". Audi, along with German brands BMW and Mercedes-Benz, is among the best-selling luxury automobile brands in the world.

Common Audi problems

Audi cars, while renowned for their luxury and performance, are not immune to certain problems. These issues can range from electrical component malfunctions to engine and transmission troubles. Here are some common problems with Audi vehicles based on complaints from their owners:

  • Electrical Problems: The Audi A6 experiences electrical issues with power windows, door locks, and dashboard display. These problems can be caused by faulty wiring, blown fuses, or malfunctioning control modules. Common electrical component issues in the A6 include non-responsive window switches, intermittent door lock malfunctions, or flickering dashboard lights.
  • Transmission Issues: Some newer Audi Q5 models have reported rough shifting, slipping gears, and delayed engagement problems. These issues can be attributed to faulty transmission control modules, worn-out clutch plates, or low transmission fluid levels. It is important to address transmission issues quickly to avoid further damage to the transmission system or the engine.
  • Convertible Top Malfunctions: The Audi TT convertible models see a lot of complaints with the convertible top. Some owners have reported difficulties in opening or closing the top or instances where it gets stuck midway. Malfunctioning convertible top motors, faulty sensors, or damaged hydraulic lines can be the cause of these problems.
  • Suspension Noise: Owners of the Audi Q7 have reported clunking or knocking noises coming from the vehicle’s suspension system, specifically when going uphill. These noises are caused by premature failure of the front suspension lower arm rear bush due to overheating. Having your Audi repair specialist replace the strut top and hydro bushings should eliminate these noises.
  • Coolant Leaks: Coolant leaks are a common problem in Audi A3 models. These leaks can occur due to issues like a damaged radiator, faulty water pump, or a malfunctioning coolant hose or connection. Coolant leaks in an Audi are a serious concern – they can lead to engine overheating and thousands of dollars in potential repairs.
  • Brake Problems: Certain Audi A8 models have reported frequent brake-related issues. These problems can manifest as squeaking or grinding noises, reduced braking power, or a soft brake pedal. Most owners complain of having to replace their brakes more than usual. Worn-out brake pads, damaged rotors, or a malfunctioning brake caliper could be the underlying causes.
  • Engine Misfire: Engine misfires have been reported in some Audi S4 models, leading to rough idling, reduced power, or increased fuel consumption. Faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors are common culprits behind these misfires.

Regular maintenance, keeping the car's software up-to-date, and promptly addressing any anomalies can help prevent or mitigate these issues. It is essential to consult an experienced Audi technician for accurate diagnosis and solutions if any problems are encountered.

  • Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Design and/or manufacturing flaw in Audi m/n 8R0071128C Fork Mount Bike Rack presents a risk of bicycle becoming detached from the rack/vehicle at highway speeds. I have retained all parts and they could be made available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Risk is bicycle flying off the roof of a car at highway speeds causing significant damage to the carrying vehicle and/or triggering a serious accident involving nearby vehicles. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Not yet, but I have been engaged in a very slow moving dialog with a number of Audi representatives, most recently with Lori W, Region Case Manager, Audi CXC (Audi of America Customer Experience Center). Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Not Applicable Travelling at highway speed was a bang on car roof. Pulled over and found that the bicycle mounted on the Audi m/n 8R0071128C Fork Mount Bike Rack was no longer secured. After removing the bicycle, I saw that 1of2 threaded parts that clamp the bicycle fork to the rack was gone, bang heard likely was that part hitting roof. Remaining 2of2 threaded part was loose, could be turned by hand and was in danger of also falling off. It appears that the design of Audi m/n 8R0071128C enables these critical parts to unthread and detach during use. Possible fixes may be as simple as use of a permanent type thread locking compound during manufacturing or as complex as a redesign which does not present the possibility of failing in such an unsafe manner. • Fire: 0
  • VIN: WAUKFGFF1F1
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Shortly after starting the car, and while exiting a parking lot, the car stalled and lost engine power. I was able to start the car back up for long enough to be able to pull back into the parking lot however after the car got parked the engine refused to start and stay running for the next hour. After a check using OBD11, the codes were showing the cause of the original problem was low fuel pressure which ended up causing misfires. The only way I was able to get the car running and staying running was by purging the system repeatedly by turning on the ignition without starting the car. This has all happened once before while I was driving at relatively low speeds (around 25 MPH) in a town, and I had to go through the same process. No warning lights show for the first multiple attempts at starting the car until it consistently fails to start. No inspections have taken place.

  • VIN: WA1LFAFP3FA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Recently purchased a used vehicle from this dealership that there is a major issue with the drive train including the cv axel and also an issue with the tires that are on the vehicle. One of the tires had gone flat so I took it to the local Les Schwab to have it inspected and was told that I could not repaired it and that they could not sell me and put on the one tire because the vehicle manufacturer size was not met and that it can cause a danger on my 2015 Audi Q5 premium plus. The tire size that was on the vehicle that was purchased is 255/35ZR19, the manufacturers size is 235/55R19 per the les Schwab it can damage the vehicle and decrease the performance of the function of the vehicle which also impacts the speedometer reading and also the mileage tracking adding additional strain on the vehicle as well as decreasing its value faster. The vehicle is an all-wheel drive car and have the incorrect size is a safety concern as well as increasing the amount of mile that are driven that are artificial, also messing with the speedometer reading to have to go 10 mile over the limit to make it go the correct speed, this makes the computer think the vehicle is driving more mile than it is. I have informed the dealer of the issues, and they have refused to help and state that there is nothing to be concerned about. This information was not disclosed to me when purchasing the vehicle.

The car stalled immediately and lost all motive power. I had to limp across 3 lanes of traffic to get to the shoulder right away, risking collision from passing vehicles. I could provide the damaged pump for inspection if needed. It's a common failure of the CP4 design, disintegrating and pushing tiny metal shards throughout the fuel system including injectors. The CP4 has been recalled on many vehicles previously. The problem has been diagnosed by the Audi dealership and confirmed the Bosch CP4 pump failed and destroyed the entire fuel system. The car has been dealership maintained since new and had no warning signs of failure, or lights. It was running perfectly prior to this incident. Because of the location of the incident there was a 5 hour delay in roadside assistance, in which my family sat on the side of the road.
