2002 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common 2002 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a classic crossover SUV known for its luxury amenities, six-cylinder engine, and four-wheel-drive system. However, like any vehicle, it has its fair share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners:

  • Airbags Flaws: Despite the Grand Cherokee's high crash test ratings and safety features, such as front seat belts, side-curtain airbags, and rain-sensing wipers, there have been concerns regarding default airbag sensors. Airbags are crucial for preventing fatal injuries in case of a car crash, and it is essential to ensure that both the airbag and sensors are in good condition.
  • AC Problems: The Grand Cherokee's cooling system may stop running occasionally for no reason. Defects with water pumps, heating core, and blower fans could contribute to air conditioner failures. It is necessary to get the system repaired to continue riding the vehicle even during warm days.
  • Minor Issues: Other minor concerns raised by Grand Cherokee users include lights defects, seat belts faults, suspension problems, and interior accessories faults. It is advisable to visit a reputable repair expert to have these issues fixed in time before they do more harm to the vehicle and maintain its value.
  • Transmission Issues: Transmission failure is a significant concern for many 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners. Some of the transmission issues highlighted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations include rough shifts, transmission slipping, delayed gear engagement, transmission fluid leaks, and transmission warning light.
  • Death Wobble: This is a creative term coined by Jeep owners that describes a situation when the front axle begins violently oscillating, causing the car to shake (or wobble) in a manner that makes the vehicle hard to control.
  • Window Regulator Failure: Without the window regulator, power windows become useless. Thousands of Jeep owners have complained about their windows falling into the door, sometimes at highway speeds.

These issues are common in the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and it is essential to address them promptly to avoid high repair costs and maintain the vehicle's value.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-14
  • VIN: 1J4GX48S22C
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I currently own 3 of the same vehicles myself, my husband and my son. Each of the vehicles have been experiencing electrical issues. I have taken all of the vehicles at some point back to the mechanic for repairs for this issue. It was only a temporary fix. Here are examples of some of the electrical issues. The blinkers and break lights may go out and not work while we are driving and some days they work just fine. But it has now become a safety hazard because we never know when they will work and are afraid to be hit by another car from the rear. Another example is when I am driving down the street all of the sudden the windows will automatically roll down by themselves. These issues have put all of our safety at risk, especially while we are driving in high traffic areas such as Atlanta, Georgia. The problem was acessed by our auto mechanic on all three (3) vehicles. They are are 1999-2000, 2001 & 2002 Grand Cherokee one of the vehicles is a limited edition. There are no warning signs or symptoms and the check engine light is not on any of the vehicles.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-09
  • VIN: 1J8GW58J22C
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I brought in my car in to Roger Williams Chrysler in Weatherford TX, 1102 Washington Dr, Weatherford, TX 76086, for Safety Recall R06. The first appointment I dropped off the vehicle and received a rental, which was covered by FCA under the recall. A couple of days pass as they order parts and perform the maintenance. I return to my vehicle once they stated the Safety Recall was completed. The airbag light was still on, they couldn't tell me what DTC was associated with the light so I checked it myself. The DTC's were airbag DTC 54 and 55 (Side impact sensor internal fault). Safety Recall R06 instructs the dealership to replace impact sensors should they have any DTC's on them. R06 also states, at least twice, NOT to replace the front impact sensors, which they boasted and were proud about replacing. They stated "the tech has done hundreds of these recalls and always replaces the front sensors". I explained why I felt the recall maintenance was not completed to the tech when I picked up my vehicle. He maintained his narrative that the recall was satisfied and if I wanted them to look into it further it would be a minimum of $300.00. As weeks go by while I work with FCA customer care and the dealership service manager I am forced to drive a vehicle with faulty airbags. After several weeks and numerous phone calls and arguing I convinced the dealership to take another look at the vehicle. Upon their second look they initially maintained that the recall was satisfied and that the front sensors were replaced. I pleaded with the service manager once more to check the DTC's and review the NHTSA/FCA Safety Recall R06 instructions to replace the side impact sensors. They finally do, now the vehicles airbags are functioning and all is well. I just wonder, how many hundreds of WJ's are out there that had this maintenance done incorrectly and either don't know or didn't push hard enough to have it done correctly. How was this even able to get to this point?

  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: ONE MONDAY THE 6TH DRIVING NORTH. IT WAS RAINING. SO, I HAD FULL 4WHEEL DRIVE ENGAGED. A CAR CUT ME OFF. I WAS ON THE TRANSITION FROM THE 5 N TO THE 55N. A CAR FROM THE LEFT LANE CUT INTO MY LANE TO TRY AND EXIT ONTO 4TH STREET. TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT I SLAMMED ON THE BREAKS AND VEERED RIGHT. BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP. I PUSHING DOWN ON THE BREAKS AS HARD AS I COULD. THE CAR WAS STILL ACCELERATING AND DID NOT SLOW DOWN. TRYING TO OBTAIN CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE I "FISHTAILED" FROM GOING RIGHT BACK TO LEFT AND HIT THE SIDE OF THE CAR AND THEN HIT THE CENTER DIVIDER. THE CAR KEPT ACCELERATING AND I HIT THE CENTER DIVIDER AND FLIPPED AROUND. I WAS THEN FACING OPPOSITE TRAFFIC TOWARDS THE DIVIDER. I THREW THE CAR INTO PARK AND HELD THE BREAKS STRONG. THE BACK WHEELS WERE STILL SPINNING OUT. I LOOK DOWN AND THE KEYS WERE NOT IN THE IGNITION. LUCKILY, I HAD A SPARE KEY IN THE CENTER CONSOLE AND SHUT IT DOWN. I FOUND THE KEYS ON THE GROUND BUT NOT ANYWHERE NEAR THE PEDALS. I TALKED TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT. THE ONLY THING THEY COULD VERIFY IS THAT THE KEY COULD COME OUT WILE THE CAR IS STILL ON. ACCORDING TO THEM THIS HAPPENS AS THE KEY WEARS DOWN OR GETS OLD.

Negative 2002 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

  1. Gerson Johnson 2024-10-24

I fell in love with the car the moment I saw it and even paid the sticker price without hesitation. However, within a week, the check engine light came on and I've had to spend a considerable amount of money on both regular and unexpected maintenance. Unfortunately, it never starts right and the brake pads wear out quickly despite my careful driving. I've had to replace the rotors three times already and now it's even stalling on me. It's frustrating to deal with these issues, especially since the car has only 75,000 miles on it. I'm considering trading it in, even though it means taking a loss.

I strongly advise against purchasing this car. Despite owning a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee, my experience with the 2002 model has been a complete disaster. The car has had three recalls, the air conditioning does not work despite the manufacturer's assurance, and the transmission has already had to be replaced within six months of purchase. Unfortunately, the replacement transmission is also showing signs of slipping. I recommend considering other options before spending your money on this car.

I purchased this Jeep with 51K miles on it and unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. I have had to replace several parts such as the front and rear passenger window motors, radiator fan (twice), radiator fan relay (twice), A/C coolant, rear brakes, turned front rotors, and the gas cap. I am currently in the process of replacing the passenger side mirror and both tweeters. Despite these issues, I am happy to report that the engine and transmission have been running smoothly. Although there are some minor problems, I am confident that they can be resolved. Thank you for your understanding.

I purchased this vehicle with 36,000 miles on it and after driving it for 45,000 miles, I am happy to say that it is time for me to move on. Although I enjoyed it initially, I experienced some issues with the AC, parking brake, and tires. Additionally, the lining around the moonroof and the side paneling of the door required frequent repairs. Despite these challenges, I am grateful for the time I spent with this car and am excited to find my next vehicle.

  5. Joseph Muller 2024-08-20

I purchased this vehicle with 39k miles and have had to replace several parts over the years, including the entire transmission at 65k (costing $2600), front axle at 48k, and the entire front end at 85k. I also had to replace the front and rear axle seals, valve cover gasket, and oil pan gasket at 90k. Additionally, I had to replace the throttle body sensor 5k miles ago, which caused issues during a NYS inspection. While the vehicle is not great on gas and doesn't perform well on unmarked roads in the snow, it is very comfortable inside and has an awesome Jeep turning radius. The vehicle also has a great appearance both inside and outside, and the motor runs strong. However, I would have preferred a V8 engine if I had known better. It's important to note that there is an evacuation recall for all 2002 models, which may affect your ability to pass an inspection and could impact the sell-back value. Overall, I hope this information is helpful to you.

Positive 2002 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

Hey there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Jeep! It sounds like it's a really versatile vehicle that can handle both on and off-road driving. The 4.0 L Straight Six engine sounds like it's got some serious power, especially with that low end torque. I'm also impressed that you were able to modify it with a 4 inch lift - that must make it even better off-road! And it's great to hear that the Select-trac system is working well for you in slippery conditions. Overall, it sounds like you've got a fantastic vehicle that's perfect for your needs!

  2. Albert Mohr 2025-01-02

I purchased my Jeep less than a year ago and have already driven nearly 20,000 miles. The vehicle currently has 147,000 miles on it. Although I paid $5000 for it, I have spent almost $3000 on repairs. Unfortunately, the truck does not have any resale value and only averages 12.5 MPG. I have had some issues with Jeep customer service and have not found their recalls to be worthwhile. Despite having to replace several wheel seals, drive shaft seals, speakers, and heated seats, Jeep claims that these are not common problems. While the Jeep is aesthetically pleasing and comfortable, I do not believe it is worth the time and money. I would recommend saving your money.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that you're doing a really good job!

  4. Josue Prohaska 2024-11-19

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I've actually bought three of them, and I have to say, this one has been the best so far! I haven't had any major mechanical problems, and it handles great in the snow. The gas mileage is around 17 in the city and 21-23 on the highway. I did have some trouble with the original Goodyear tires, but the ones I've bought since then have all lasted the warranty amount, even with various brands. Overall, I think it's a great SUV!

  5. Tod Lehner 2024-11-05

I initially classified this under the '03 model year, but I actually have a '02. Let me give you a quick summary: This car is absolutely amazing! I am beyond thrilled with it and have received countless compliments. It has all the luxurious features, amenities, and comfort of an SUV, but for $10K less, and it can handle serious off-road adventures. On a side note, I wanted to mention that if you happen to live in Southern California, I would recommend avoiding Glendale Star Chrysler Jeep. Unfortunately, 90% of their staff are the stereotypical sleazy and heartless car salesmen. The only exception was a new employee who had only been there for a week. I really dislike that dealership, but I absolutely adore my car!
