The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

ANOTHER THING, I WANT CONSIDERED IS THE FACT, THAT MY CAR IS AT LEAST 21 YEARS OLD, SO THERE MIGHT POSSIBLY BE RUST, BUT NOT TO THE LEVEL THAT WOULD PREVENT THEM FROM COMPLETING THE INSTALLATION.

Negative 1994 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

Our '96 Grand Jeep has been a bit of a challenge for us. We've had some issues with the differential, A/C, computer under the hood, transmission fluid, and wheel shimmy. It's been a bit of a money pit, but thankfully my husband is mechanically inclined and we have an extended warranty. Despite its good looks, we don't trust it to run to the grocery store. If it weren't for my husband and the warranty, we would have gotten rid of it by now. I would advise caution when considering a Jeep. Thank you for your understanding.

I have had the Jeep since new and have diligently maintained it as per the manufacturer's recommendations. Unfortunately, there have been several issues with the vehicle, including Transmission, AC evap, AC cond, AC high pressure hose, AC compressor, catalytic converter, water pump, CV boots, rear axle seal, axle bearings, door wiring harness (twice), interior mirror, radio, exhaust manifold, Thottle body warped, fuel tank check valve, front suspension bushings, and a brake caliper that froze on the freeway. It is worth noting that a friend who also owns the same Jeep has experienced similar problems. Despite these issues, I have decided to switch back to Subaru and Toyota for my future car purchases.

  3. Emiliano Kovacek 2024-10-27

I strongly advise against purchasing another Jeep product due to my personal experience with the 4 motor mounts (one per year), 1 cv joint, and the 4-speed automatic transmission failing at 135,000 miles and being irreparable.

The Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD has unfortunately not lived up to expectations. Despite being maintained to the highest standard, the vehicle has required numerous repairs, including a tracking bar and other suspension parts ($300), a new air conditioning system ($1500), a new fuel pump ($500), and has experienced issues with the transmission and wiring. Over the last two years, the cost of repairs has exceeded $3,000, which is half of its current market value. While this has been a frustrating experience, it is important to note that my Toyota with the same mileage (115K) has never had any issues. As a result, I have decided to sell the Grand Cherokee and purchase a 4Runner.

This is my fourth Jeep. I bought it after my 1992 Cherokee Laredo finally gave up the ghost after 396,724 miles. And yes, Virginia, Jeeps DO last more than 30,000 miles. My wife has a 2001 60th Anniversary Edition Cherokee and she absolutely loves it. Jeeps are solid, rugged, fun to drive, reliable and popular - that's what has turned me and many of my friends into 'Jeep-Heads'. I'm already looking forward to my next Jeep, which will definitely be a Wrangler of some sort.

This is the best and most reliable jeep I have ever owned. My family has four others: Cherokee, CJ-7, Wrangler, and Commanche. The engine is great and will easily pull most things. It also drives great in the snow with a trailer. Overall, it is a very reliable vehicle.

Great driving vehicle! It goes through almost anything and has great power and handling.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my v8 Grand Cherokee Limited that I recently purchased. It was brought to Canada from California over a year ago and had been sitting without starting for that entire time. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I boosted it and it ran and drove on a dead battery and year-old gas! Since then, it has been my daily driver and I take it trail-riding every 2 or 3 days. I'm happy to report that it has never been stuck or broken down. In my opinion, that's a testament to how tough these trucks are! I'm definitely hooked on Jeeps now. Thank you for listening to my story!

What a fantastic vehicle! Your father purchased this Jeep brand new in late 1993 and sold it to you in 1997. The 4 litre straight six engine has been an absolute rock, with the exception of the usual 'piston slap'. In the 14 years that you've owned it, you've only had to replace the water pump and fuel pump. You've been proactive with maintenance, such as changing the fuel filter and other tune-up items, and the Jeep has rewarded you handsomely for it. You've even towed an overloaded 2-axle U-Haul trailer across the country and although you threw a wheel bearing that led to a shredded axle, you know it was your own fault. Even with the heavy load, the Jeep still managed to get 13 mpg on that trip. You've loaded it with over 1000 lbs countless times and it has towed your boat like a champ. Despite all the abuse it has taken over the years, it still cleans up nicely!

I've had mine since 1994 when I got it new. It has now clocked 187,000 miles and is still running smoothly. I may encounter a problem once a year, such as a pump or electrical issue, but nothing major considering how reliable it has been to me.
