1995 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-02-28
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1J4GZ78YXSC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: COMPONENT (DIODE) ON 60 PIN PCM HAS A SHORT CAUSING INJECTOR NUMBER 6 TO STICK WIDE OPEN. RESULT IS A CYLINDER COMPRESSING FUEL WHICH CAN LEAD TO EXPLOSION, ALSO RAW FUEL ESCAPING OUT OF THE TAIL PIPE AND LARGE AMOUNTS OF SMOKE. GASOLINE PULLS THE OIL OFF OF CYLINDER WALL CAUSING EXCESSIVE FRICTION AND ENGINE DAMAGE ALONG WITH CATALYTIC CONVERTER DAMAGE. IF REAR ENDED WHEN INJECTOR IS STICKING OPEN COULD CAUSE EXPLOSION OR FIRE! I HAVE CONFIRMED THIS ON 3 OTHER 93-95 GRAND CHEROKEE OBD I MODELS AS WELL. JEEP WAS IDLING NEAR SOMEONE WELDING AND THE INJECTOR STUCK OPEN AND STARTED A FIRE. FIRE WAS EXSTINGUISHED IMMEDIATELY WITH DIRT AND WATER. NO PHYSICAL DAMAGES OCCURRED JUST A SCARE. I MOVED INJECTOR 6 PLUG TO 8, THEN 8 STUCK OPEN, UPON PUTTING PRESSURE ON THE COMPUTER CONNECTOR I REALIZED THE INJECTOR WOULD OPERATE NORMALLY AGAIN. BEEN HAPPENING FOR MONTHS, JUST NOW FOUND THE ROOT CAUSE. WILL UPLOAD PICS LATER IF IT WILL LET ME. I CAN SET FIRE TO THE GROUND WHERE THE TAILPIPE IS WHEN INJECTOR IS STUCK OPEN.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-10-17
  • VIN: 1C4;\PJMCSX
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2015 JEEP CHEROKEE WITH ONLY 14,500 MILES ON IT. I NOTICED THAT THE TRANSMISSION DID NOT SHIFT PROPERLY. THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE SOFTWARE THAT WEEK. A FEW DAYS AFTER PICK UP, I NOTICED THE SAME PROBLEM: DOWN SHIFTING, NOT SHIFTING, TRANSMISSION REVING UP AND NOT ENGAGING WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-01-03
  • VIN: 1J4FT27S8SL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: DEAR SIRS, I HAVE DISCOVERED A VERY DANGEROUS ELECTRICAL HAZARD THAT IS OCCURRING ON ALL THE 1990'S JEEP CHEROKEE SE MODELS. ON THE 4.0 LITER 242 CUBIC INCH MODELS, THE DASHBOARD SWITCH THAT CONTROLS THE AIRFLOW AFTER ONLY A FEW YEARS OF USE SHORTS OUT MELTING AND CAUSING A SEVERE DANGER PROBLEM. WHEN THIS BROWN PLUG MELTS IT ALSO SHORTS OUT THE 30 AMP FUSE THAT IS CONNECTED TO THIS AREA. AFTER INVESTIGATING SEVERAL OF THESE SAME MODELS IT IS A DANGEROUS DESIGN FAULT THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. CAN YOU PLEASE TAKE SOME CORRECTIVE ACTION BEFORE SOMEONE GETS INJURED OR KILLED FROM THIS? THE NEXT EMAIL WILL SHOW AN EXAMPLE OF TWO DIFFERENT 1990'S JEEP CHEROKEE'S WITH SEVERAL PICS AND BOTH VEHICLE'S V.I.N.# INFORMATION. MY 1995 JEEP WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW BY MY LATE FATHER AND AFTER 23 YEARS OF USE IT ONLY HAS 113K ORIGINAL MILES ON IT. THIS JEEP REMAINS A STRONG GARAGE KEPT O.E.M. MATCHING NUMBERS #3 CAR NOT A #1 CONCOURS. I AM AFRAID IF I USE THE SWITCH SOONER OR LATER IT WILL CATCH ON FIRE AS A RESULT OF THIS FLAW DESIGN. I HAVE EVERY MAINTENANCE RECEIPT INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL SALES STICKER AND ALL DOCUMENTS FROM ITS BIRTH IN 1995. THE VEHICLE SINCE BIRTH HAS HAD ZERO MODIFICATIONS DONE TO IT AND HAS BEEN KEPT IN IT'S ORIGINAL CONDITION JUST AS IT ROLLED OFF THE ASSEMBLY LINE IN 1995. ON JUNE 10, 2018 AT 9.15 PM E.S.T. I SPOKE TO A CUSTOMER CARE JEEP REP AT 877-426-5337 WHO DID ISSUE A CASE # FOR THIS OF 345-103-88. SHE DID ADVISE IT WILL BE SENT UP THRU THE COMPANY'S CHAIN OF COMMUNICATION. I AM HOPING JEEP USA WILL TAKE NOTE OF THIS AND FOLLOW UP AS I DO NOT WANT TO LOOSE MY JEEP THAT IS AND HAS BEEN A KEEPSAKE SACRED FAMILY HEIRLOOM THAT MUST BE PASSED ON. I CAN ONLY HOPE AND PRAY THAT NOBODY ELSE HAS ALREADY HAD SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH AS A RESULT OF THIS DESIGN FLAW. *JS

Driving a JGC can be a love/hate experience. Personally, I love driving and admiring my JGC, but I hate having to fix it. If you're someone who doesn't drive many miles (like me - only 6000k per year), enjoys the experience of owning a car, can find a good deal (around $3000), and have AAA, then I would definitely recommend it. However, if you're looking for a more reliable option, I suggest going for a Toyota. While they may not drive as well (with the exception of the new 4Runner), the peace of mind that comes with knowing you can take a long trip without worrying about a breakdown is truly enjoyable. My wife's Subaru is a great example of this. Additionally, I have a Toyota van with 325k miles as a backup, and I trust it way more than my Jeep. That being said, I still absolutely love driving my JGC!

  2. Gino Kertzmann 2024-09-11

Transmission needed work at 62000 miles. Front brakes also needed replacement at 62000 miles. While the fuel economy could be better, it's still a great car overall. The larger fuel tank may cost more to fill up, but it also means fewer trips to the gas station. I bought it used and it's been a reliable choice so far.

  3. Gabriel Balistreri 2024-08-09

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my vehicle. I purchased it back in 1996 with only 30,000 miles on it and I fell in love with the way it looked and how comfortable the seats were. It's been a joy to drive with its fun and exciting ride, but I have had some reliability issues over the years. Although it has never left me stranded, it has been a bit of a hassle. Here's a list of the issues I've had over the past 8 years: the transmission was rebuilt twice (at 35k and 95k miles), I had some A/C problems twice, the rear wiper unit failed, the left front boot needed to be replaced, both fog lamp lenses fell off, the power antenna broke, the radio failed, there was a leak in the radiator, the power steering pump needed to be replaced, and the mounting bracket for the alternator broke. I've had some less-than-ideal experiences at the dealer repair centers, but I'm still grateful for my car.

  4. Dorthy Stehr 2024-07-21

Hi there! I leased this car for 2 years and then ended up buying it when it died just 1 day before the lease ended. Unfortunately, I had to spend 1k to fix the fuel system. Since then, I have had to repair the a/c, 2 oil leaks, 3 pullies on the engine, distributor, starter, and there is still a mysterious screeching noise from the engine that even the techs at the dealer can't figure out. I also had to fix the rear wiper assembly and motorized antenna. It's been tough to keep aligned despite new tires and the doors pop when closing. Lastly, the bumper cover needs some attention. Despite all of this, I still have a soft spot for this car. Thanks for listening!

  5. Robbie Heidenreich 2024-03-28

Hi there! I just wanted to share some information about my car. I bought it from a used dealer in 1999 when it had 79k miles on it. It's a New England vehicle and has now clocked 172k miles. Over the years, I've had to replace the alternator, ball joints, catalytic converter, radiator, and even the exhaust manifold which had cracked. But I'm happy to say that I've been able to keep it running well by having the old manifold welded and braced better than the original design. Overall, this car has been pretty good to me. However, I'm planning to replace it with a 1999-2002 model shortly. Thanks for reading!

  1. Lance Denesik 2024-11-29

I must say, despite Consumer Reports calling this car unreliable, it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned, even better than my Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes. The only issues I have had were a water pump that blew after a dealer power flushed the system (which was their fault), and a noisy differential after the dealer replaced a $5 seal and messed up the repair. Other than that, this car has been as reliable as a rock. With 127,000 miles, I have not had any other problems with the vehicle. Additionally, it averages 20.4 MPG with combined city and freeway driving! The original tires lasted 95,000 miles and I have never had to get an alignment!

  2. Justus Larson 2024-10-17

I have only encountered two minor issues with my Jeep, namely the multi-function switch for the headlights and the foglight lens coming off. However, I am pleased to report that I have experienced no problems with the air conditioning this summer. I am thoroughly impressed with the handling and comfort of this vehicle, and despite its 110,000 miles, there are no signs of any transmission issues. Compared to an Explorer, it is much easier to drive. Although there have been concerns raised about potential problems, I remain confident in my decision to purchase this great family car. It tows like a dream, has good gas mileage for a V8, and offers ample room for both kids and adults. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my Jeep.

  3. Davon Hermiston 2024-10-06

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that your 95' Grand Cherokee sounds like an amazing vehicle! You got a great deal at only 11 grand, and it's great to hear that the build quality is very solid. I'm glad to hear that you had no rattles or shakes and that the handling is great. It's also fantastic to hear that the 4wd functioned without any problems during last winter. I can imagine that the ride can be a bit rough off the pavement, but the ground clearance is great! The gas mileage of 18-20 mixed is impressive, and the 4 liter engine sounds like it has more than enough power for you. Passing on the freeway is not a problem, which is great! Although, I can imagine that crosswinds can be a bit of a challenge. Overall, it sounds like a fantastic vehicle! Thank you for sharing your experience with me.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share with you that I bought my Jeep 5 years ago with 161,154 miles on it, and now it has 247,896 miles! Despite the high mileage, it still runs and looks great, and I've had to do very little maintenance on it. In fact, I've only had to replace the tires once, after 64,000 miles. I'm planning on running it for another 100,000 miles, at least! Thanks for listening.

It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo! It sounds like it has served you well over the years, and it's impressive that you've been able to put so many miles on it without any major issues. While it's understandable that it may be starting to show its age with a bit of oil leakage, it's still impressive that it's been such a reliable vehicle for you.
