The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.
Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

- Summary: P41 Ignition switch recall was completed on my vehicle 11/2015. Prior to receiving recall notification I experienced no problems with accidently hitting the key while driving. Now I am experiencing great difficulty turning the ignition switch. One of my vehicle keys broke off while trying to turn the car on to drive. Most times I get in the car to go somewhere there is always an issue getting the key to turn allowing the car to turn on. The warranty for the recall has expired and I am very upset that there is nothing that can be done to rectify this problem without having out of pocket expenses. When I bought vehicle, it had no heat and coolant was leaking in on passenger side floor. 5. Jeep shifts to 3rd gear and won't shift down or back into drive until I turn off vehicle and back on. Very dangerous I was a busy road, US 41 heading north, and had to pull over.

- Summary: Entering my exit I noticed my 1month old was no longer sound asleep but screaming I turned around noticing she was being approached by smoke arising from the back of the vehicle.As panic set in I immediately tried to come to stop moving off the exit. At the same time clear fluid gushed out of the hood and smoke immediately entered the front of the vehicle making it difficult to come to a stop see or breath. I went blank out of fear or pure confusion as I reached for my infant in the back as quickly as I could at that point she was. No longer crying. I shot out of the vehicle as fast as possible and stayed in a safety spot attempting to shield her from the sun as I watched the jeep ignite and continue to smoke itself out witnesses gathered around one allowing me to sit in her vehicle with my baby until help arrived. NO warning signs once so ever no indication of an over heating vehicle drove perfectly and not frequently it may be inspected at the towing it was taken to as for the safety of my newborn and myself we both could’ve tragically ended up gone because I was not and would not have thought twice about leaving my daughter in that vehicle. she just got into this world to be taken that fast it wasnt an option. I’ve been very uneasy since the incident with absolutely anything that functions or is electronic. Continues replay in my head over and over again in detail and nothing new pops up truly a very Traumatic experience and an unexpected loss. appointments I can’t make it to have had to cancel I do not have family here especially not close by to help me this accident was by far caused by the vehicle because it definitely look like he had a mind of its own suddenly

During times of heavy rainfall, contaminated transmission fluid will overflow and puddle underneath the vehicle. Transmission fluid has been analyzed at Blackstone Laboratories and provided results showing h2o being present in the fluid, with no traces of engine coolant. Transmission shutters and shifts hard, reaches excessive temperatures under moderate loads. Dealership and independent transmission shop both have acknowledged an issue with the transmission and a water contamination.

- Summary: PCM HAS BEEN REPLACEMENT MULTIPLE TIMES BY DIFFERENT REPAIR SHOP. When computer fails it has failed a circuit with 02 sensors which kills engine power randomly while driving on highways. It has turned ABS light on and Service 4x4 randomly and won’t let the vehicle travel over 10mph. Very dangerous on roads. I’ve had three computers installed in the last Year and a half and have given me 3 close calls almost causing accident. That’s 3 too many. I’m not the only one with the computer issues ask around to owners with these jeeps. How many close called does someone need for Chrysler to not even repair but Just to look into. Do people need to die in an accident for people to take this seriously. The issue is NOT from lack of maintenance either. If my ABS module was failed I would no. My vehicle has a 115,000miles on it and when this dangerous intermittent issues occur there are no DTC codes stored. This is a total epic failure done by Chrysler. If they don’t find something soon about theses vehicles. I will be sure never to by another Jeep product. I don’t drive this vehicle unless I’m alone never-mind one of my niece or nephews With me in this death trap I’ve learned my lesson On this one Chrysler Please help NHTSA!!

The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle made an abnormal sound and independently shifted to a low gear causing the vehicle to slow down. The contact stated that the oil and battery warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where the vehicle was serviced under NHTSA campaign number: 14V438000 (Electrical system). The vehicle was repaired. The contact then stated a month later while driving at 25 mph, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer nor an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. Consumer stated vehicle is not responding.*JB

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2005 Jeep Grand cherokee.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

- Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
- Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

THESE SUSPENSION SYSTEMS WERE PRODUCED WITH GRADE 2 CARRIAGE BOLTS INSTEAD OF THE PROPER GRADE 5 CARRIAGE BOLTS. THE IMPROPER GRADE 2 CARRIAGE BOLTS COULD EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF CLAMPING FORCE FOR THE BOTTOM STRUT FORK.

I drive a Jeep Laredo Cherokee '05 and I absolutely love it! I bought it used with 18K already on it and have owned it for 3.5 years. The best part is that other than routine maintenance, I have not had to replace one part. At 46K, I even have the original brake pads and my trusted mechanic said I may go to 50K or beyond on them. A year ago, I was rear ended by a hit and run driver on one of the famous Massachusetts rotaries. Luckily, I was in my Jeep and had no injuries. My car only had a few scratches, which were easily fixed with touch-up paint. I'm so grateful for my Jeep and its durability!

I was pleasantly surprised to read so many reviews about Jeeps, and I felt compelled to share my own experience. As the original owner of my Jeep, I have driven it for 88K miles and have had no significant problems. Recently, the liftgate has started to not stay in the up position, but we plan to fix it with parts that cost less than $100. We have also had some plastic break on the rear doors behind the handle, but I think this could be due to my kids hanging on it. However, this only happened after driving over 80K miles. Mechanically, it has been great. I have the Nav and it has been fantastic too. I have loved it so much that I have decided to buy a Commander since we are outgrowing this. I hope this helps anyone who is considering buying a Jeep!

I had my first Jeep back in 1995 and kept it for 7 years. It was a great car and the only issue I had was with the air conditioning. After that, I traded it for a Chrysler Pacifica, which I also loved. Unfortunately, it was totaled by a 17-year-old who ran a stop sign just 6 months later. That's when I decided to buy my current car, a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which I love just as much as the first one. My dad taught me the importance of car maintenance, so I always take it to our local Jeep dealer for maintenance. We even bought an extended warranty due to the heavy use of the air conditioning system in Texas. Although it's not 4WD, the 8-cylinder engine performs really well. We've had it for almost three years now and still love it!

I am the third owner of my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the Hemi option. At roughly 131,000 miles, it still runs like a dream. Although it is common to hear that these Jeeps run into mechanical issues, I have been fortunate enough to not experience any (knocks on wood). What can I say? It is an all-around extremely capable SUV. The interior is simple and spacious (I am 6'6), and the only change I needed to make was adding a new Kenwood radio. For its size and rugged Jeep reputation, it is an extremely comfortable ride. As the title entails, the HEMI is a plus, especially if you regularly tow like me. The only downside of this SUV is how hard it hits your wallet at the pump. It is just too tempting to slam that gas pedal at every stop light to hear that big V8 roar.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Jeep that I bought brand new back in 2005. It has been such a reliable and fun vehicle to drive, even after driving about 35000 miles a year! I've only had to take it to the dealer a few times, but the rest of the time I just went to my local oil change place. With 201,000 miles on it, I've decided to trade it in for something that gets better mileage, but I have to say, it has served me so well with no major problems. I have owned 5 Jeep Cherokees/Grand Cherokees over the years and have gained a wealth of experience with them. However, with this particular one, I have encountered some issues. Despite having only 21,000 miles, I have had to deal with 4 rear pinion seal leaks, 1 transmission leak, faulty front brake rotors, a relay replacement, a transmission recall, and other minor issues. Although these problems have been frustrating, the vehicle still rides nicely. The gas mileage could be better, but overall, I remain confident in the brand. I believe that domestic car producers can compete with imports and I look forward to seeing improvements in the future.

Although it had some problems right after you bought it, it's great that you had the foresight to purchase the $200 deductible warranty, which came in handy. It's impressive that it can pull your 16' boat with ease and never downshifts going up hills. Plus, it gets great mpg - 19 on the freeway and 21 at 60 mph. The Hemi engine is definitely the way to go!

I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone. Although it was my dream car and looked really nice, it had too many mechanical problems. Despite my best efforts to keep up with maintenance, it was not reliable and turned off on me twice while driving on the highway. It was frustrating to deal with and I spent almost as much money fixing it as I did buying it. I would not suggest anyone else go through the same experience. It was definitely the worst decision I ever made.

I regret to inform you that I had a negative experience with my Jeep. The imput shaft broke off the transmission at 36K, but fortunately, it was covered by warranty. However, I had to replace the electronic shifter module four times, which was also covered under 770000. Unfortunately, it now needs a fifth replacement, which will cost almost $1000.00. This is a safety issue, as it could cause problems when pulling into traffic and the Jeep stops. Additionally, I had to replace the water pump at 56K due to a p0700 code. Despite being a fan of Jeep for 40 years, I am disappointed with this experience. It is unfortunate because I genuinely liked my Jeep. If you are willing to spend $1000.00 every 12k-14k for a shifter module, then you may consider purchasing one.
