1996 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

  • Summary: THE INSPECTION RECALL ON MY 1996 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE DID NOTHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM WITH PCM AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER SPECIFIED IN THE DEFECTIVE ISSUE WITHIN THE RECALLS ISSUED. THIS HARMS THE DRIVER, PEDESTRIANS, OTHER PASSENGERS AND MOTORISTS. THE TECH WHERE I WENT TO HAVE RECALL WORK PERFORMED ORDERED PARTS (SEE ATTACHMENT), BUT NOTHING WAS INSTALLED ON MY VEHICLE. ONLY "INSPECTED." THE TECH WAS TOLD OF DETAILED POOR PERFORMANCE AND SYMPTOMS OF A BAD PCM. SUCH AS SHIFTING, STALLING, FUEL ECONOMY & HARD TO START. THE JEEP IS NOT OPERATING OPTIMALLY & THIS COULD MEAN THERE ARE. OTHER PROBLEMS BETWEEN DIFFERENT SYSTEMS. ALL OF THESE ARE INDICATIONS OF A FAULTY PCM. AS WELL AS THE ABS LIGHT BEING ON THE DASHBOARD. THE PCM IS A "CRITICAL" SYSTEM & NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I'M REQUESTING THAT YOU FIX THIS PROBLEM FOR FREE, AS IT IS DEFECTIVE AND COULD MINGLE WITH OTHER SYSTEMS AND CAUSE A COMPLETE VEHICLE BREAK DOWN. OR REFUND THE COST TO ME IN FULL, INCLUDING LABOR CHARGES, IF I REPLACE/REPAIR MYSELF. IF THIS DEFECTIVE PART IS NOT FIXED, IT COULD RESULT IN PROPERTY DAMAGE, IN WHICH CDJ WOULD BE LIABLE FOR. PLEASE ADVISE AS TO HOW YOU CAN HELP ENFORCE THE MANUFACTURE TO FULLY REPAIR THESE DEFECTIVE PARTS & REMEDY THIS PROBLEM ON FIXING THE FAULTY PCM & CATALYTIC CONVERTER WITHIN A RECALL AND POSSIBLY THE ABS SYSTEM AND TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLE STALLS ON HIGHWAY, IN PARK, ON THE STREET, WHEN STOPPED AND THEN IT STALLS OUT AND IS HARD TO START. IT ALSO HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO GO IN REVERSE ( BACK UP). WHICH MEAN IT'S NOT GETTING PROPER LUBRICATION. ALSO, THE ALARM GOES OFF WHEN USING KEY TO GAIN ACCESS. UNHOOKING BATTERY TO RESET DOES NOT HELP.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-11-02
  • VIN: 1JF4FJB8S7T
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: WE BOUGHT AN IMPORTED RIGHT-HAND DRIVE JEEP FROM POSTAL PETE, GALENA IL, FOR A MAIL ROUTE. THIS IS NOT SAFETY MAYBE: 1. THE OIL PRESSURE GUAGE, INSTEAD OF BEING REPAIRED IN THE DASH, THEY ADDED AN AUXILLARY OIL GAUGE BELOW THE DASH, WHICH MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO SAFELY LOOK AT THE GAUGE. 2. THE ODOMETER/SPEEDOMETER UNIT DOESN'T MEASURE CORRECTLY I THINK. 3. THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH & CONSOLE DON'T WORK. BECAUSE OF THE TAKATA RECALLS, I LOOKED AT YOUR SITE. WHEN WE COMPLAINED WITH THE DEALER THEIR ATTITUDE WAS TOUGH YOU PAID FOR IT. ALSO THE REAR END WAS BAD. MY HUSBAND WENT BACK BEFORE HE LEFT IL FOR FL. THEY EXCUSED IT SAYING IT WAS TIRES. MY HUSBAND KNEW THEY WERE LYING (HE DOES WORK ON VEHICLES FOR US). WE ENDED UP HAVING TO REPLACE THE REAR END. THIS COMPLAINT IS MORE ABOUT THE IMPORTER POSTAL PETE THAN IT IS ABOUT THE VEHICLE. THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO DO THIS TO CUSTOMERS. ALSO THEY REQUIRED A CHECK IN ADVANCE, THEREBY MAKING IT SO WE COULD NOT REFUSE THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THEY HAD OUR MONEY. NOT NICE PEOPLE. DIS-HONESTY. I RETIRED DEC. 2011. I DON'T REMEMBER PURCHASE DATE. YOU REQUIRE SOMETHING. PICKED UP 11/02/10 REG. 12/07/2010 THANK YOU. ALICIA

On vehicles in the recall that are equipped with an aftermarket tow hitch, Chrysler will assess whether the hitch and surrounding areas show evidence of sharp edges or other puncture risks. If so, Chrysler will replace the tow hitch with a Chrysler designed tow hitch free of charge, provided the condition of the vehicle can support proper installation. On vehicles already equipped with a Chrysler designed tow hitch, Chrysler will inspect the area around the tow hitch installation, and if any installation issues are identified, they will be repaired free of charge. The recall began on August 1, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign numbers are N45 (for the Grand Cherokee vehicles) and N46 (for the Liberty vehicles).

Negative 1996 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

This vehicle has had some issues since day 1, but it has been a fun ride overall. We bought it at 55,000 miles with the 318 V-8 engine, but unfortunately, the dealership could never fix the engine pinging. We had some trouble with the 4WD slipping out of 4WD low and the CD player and radio stopped working. Additionally, the sunroof leaks during big rainstorms. Despite these issues, we have never driven the vehicle hard or abused it. It was my wife's vehicle and she used it to commute back and forth a short distance to work. Although the vehicle has bled us dry for repair bills, it gets 15.6 mpg and the trannie seems to shift back and forth unnecessarily when going up hills. Overall, it has been a pleasure to drive this vehicle.

I will never buy another Jeep. However, it is important to note that our experience with a used Jeep has not been ideal. Despite only having 15,000 miles on it, we have had to invest at least $4,000 into fixing the A/C over the last 3 years. Additionally, the switches have never worked consistently, and one of them went out at the same time as the A/C, leaving all the windows stuck open for 2 weeks until the part arrived. While there have been other issues, we have been able to address them promptly. It is clear that regular maintenance is necessary to keep this vehicle running smoothly.

  3. Adrian Rosenbaum 2024-08-13

I recently purchased this vehicle off lease with 28k miles. I needed a high-clearance vehicle for work as I occasionally have to drive on dirt/gravel roads. Although I was initially interested in a 4Runner, I decided to 'Buy American' and save some money - unfortunately, this turned out to be a big mistake. The interior trim is peeling off of the doors and the seat fabric failed early. I also find myself accidentally hitting my foot on the door lip when getting in and out. Additionally, it has a 'tippy' feel on corners. To make matters worse, I had to replace the transmission at 65k miles, spending the $3000 I thought I had saved on the purchase, but it still doesn't work that smoothly.

  4. Darius Lueilwitz 2024-04-28

Overall, this has been a great Jeep! The 4.0 is one of the best engines ever made, despite some ancillary equipment that was poorly designed (water pump, exhaust manifold, crankshaft position sensor). You'll be happy to know that I've got over 130K miles on it and it is still going strong. I am a fanatic about maintenance, and changing fluids before they are due, which is why all my cars are good for 300k miles.

  5. Bradly Bailey 2024-03-22

I absolutely love this car! Its large size and high ride make it perfect for me. Over the past 3 years, I've had so much fun with it, and it's saved me a ton of money in UHAUL trailers thanks to its large cargo capacity. Occasionally, I've even used the 4 wheel drive for snow and ice, and it's worked like a charm. While I did have a couple of issues with the fuel pump and A/C, they were minor and didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the car. I would highly recommend it!

  1. Terence Miller 2024-11-24

I have owned a 1996 Limited Grand Cherokee since 2002 and I am proud to say that it has been a reliable vehicle throughout the years. Despite minor issues that needed fixing, I have only required major work on it every few years, and even then, it was usually for the same things. This Jeep has been exposed to all weather conditions as it stays outside year-round, yet it still gets me to my destinations without any problems. Of course, routine maintenance is necessary for a vehicle of this age, but it is understandable when issues arise. I still enjoy driving this Jeep today, and I often receive compliments and inquiries about it. I sympathize with other owners who have experienced problems with their Jeeps, but I am confident that I will continue to own and enjoy this great SUV until it stops running. Thank you, Jeep!

  2. Soledad Howell 2024-11-20

My Jeep has been amazing! It has done everything I've asked of it with only a few minor issues. Although I was initially skeptical of Jeep quality, having only driven GM cars in the past, I am now a big fan of the Grand Cherokee. I've only had to replace the stabilizer bar and tie rods at 90K and the water pump at 105K. Other than that, nothing else has gone wrong, even though I've driven this car long, fast and hard. And let's not forget the heated seats, which are a lifesaver in cold Michigan weather!

  3. Russell Cartwright 2024-11-16

You made a great choice when you bought this vehicle back in 2004 with 190,000 miles on it, and it's still running well at 196.6 miles! The interior was in excellent condition and really impressed you. The 4wd still works very well, and the previous owner did a lot of routine maintenance on it, which is why it still runs so well. At $4000, it was a great deal, and you're overall very satisfied with it. The paint still looks as good as new, but you just wish the gas mileage was a bit better.

  4. Hazel Kuhlman 2024-11-05

Despite its age, this SUV is still a great choice. While driving on rough roads, it may shake a bit and cause some discomfort, but overall it is a reliable car. The front bumper design and braking could be improved, but the handling is just fine. The MPG is decent for a V8 engine, and the parts are cheap and modifiable (in non-US countries). If you have an LPG installed, you can get around the same MPG as a 1.6 litre car. Overall, I would rate it 4.5/5 stars!

  5. Orin Torp 2024-11-02

I was given my Jeep as a gift, and even though it had 210,000 miles on it and everything was still original, I was thrilled to have it. Now, with 240,000 miles on it, I've only had to replace the fuel pump and the radiator - everything else is still in great condition. I know a lot of people complain about the spare tire placement, but other than that and the rear window not opening, I think it's an awesome vehicle. It has good power and a comfortable ride. I love it so much that my girlfriend and I are both planning on getting Jeeps in the future!
