1998 Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.
Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common 1998 Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most prevalent issues and their details:
- Cruise Control Malfunctions: Some owners have experienced issues with the cruise control system, which may require the driver to repeatedly press the cruise control on button for it to function properly. This issue can be caused by a faulty switch on the steering wheel, which may need to be repaired or replaced to restore the system's functionality.
- Rear Impact Fire Defect: A significant concern with the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the rear impact fire defect, which can lead to fuel leaks and potential fires during rear-end collisions. This issue is related to the placement and design of the gas tank, which can be vulnerable to punctures during accidents. While this is a more serious issue, it is worth noting that it is not exclusive to the 1998 model and has been a subject of recalls and lawsuits for Jeep.
- Engine Stalls: Several owners have reported engine stalls or shutdowns while driving, which can be a significant safety concern. This issue can be caused by various factors, including electrical problems, fuel system issues, or engine malfunctions. A thorough diagnosis is required to identify the root cause and implement the appropriate repair.
- Death Wobble: The death wobble is a term used to describe a violent oscillation of the front axle, causing the vehicle to shake or wobble uncontrollably. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged suspension components, misalignment, or improper tire balance. Addressing the death wobble typically involves inspecting and repairing or replacing the affected suspension components to restore the vehicle's stability and safety.
- Rust: Rust is a common problem in older vehicles, and the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee is no exception. Rust can form on various parts of the vehicle, including the undercarriage, suspension components, and body panels. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address rust issues before they become more severe.
- Interior and Seat Cleaning: As a family car with three kids, the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee can accumulate dirt, grime, and stains in the interior and on the seats. Proper cleaning and maintenance, including deep cleaning of the carpets and seats, can help restore the vehicle's appearance and functionality.
In summary, the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee has several common problems that owners may encounter, ranging from exhaust leaks and cruise control malfunctions to more serious issues like engine stalls and the rear impact fire defect. Regular maintenance, inspections, and timely repairs can help address these issues and ensure the vehicle's safety and reliability.

ALSO, AS OF FEW DAYS AGO, I HAVE NO REVERSE IN IT. I NEARLY HIT ANOTHER CAR TRYING TO BACK OUT OF A SPACE AT THE HOSPITAL WHEN REVERSE DECIDED TO NO LONGER WORK. - Summary: BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE FOR TRANSPORTATION TO WORK AND HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE IT DUE TO SAFETY ISSUES AS THE TIMING BELT HAS APPARENT ISSUES THAT MAKE THE MAIN COMPUTER READ IT WRONG FROM WHAT I AM UNDERSTANDING. THE VEHICLE WANTS TO SHUT OFF AT A RED LIGHT OR STOP SIGN, THEN KICKS BACK INTO GEAR. IT SEEMS TO DRIVE BETTER ON A MAIN STRETCH, YET FALTERS AT SLOWING TO A STOP. IT IS AT THE MANUFACTURE NOW AND HAS RECALLS, YET THIS WAS NOT ON THE LIST OF REPAIRS. I FEEL THIS IS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE FIXED. THEY MENTIONED THE TIMING BELT AND CRANK SHAFT. IM NO MECHANIC, HOWEVER, THESE ISSUES COULD CAUSE ME TO LOOSE CONTROL OF THIS VEHICLE AND SHOULD BE CORRECTED. I FEEL IT IS THE MANUFACTURERS OBLIGATION TO SAFETY TO HELP ME TO HAVE THE ISSUES CORRECTED. I HAD TO HAVE SOMEONE ELSE DRIVE IT TO THE SHOP FOR ME WITH ME AS PASSENGER. VERY SCARY RIDE. *TR

I only had 3 days to buy a car after my 1997 GrCherLtd was wrecked. Luckily, I found this 1998 5.9 with only 19,000 miles on it and it turned out to be an outstanding purchase. The car is in great condition, has a fantastic sound system, and looks great too. I quickly formed a strong bond with this car. I even modified it with a front tow hook mounted trailer ball, which has been incredibly useful for moving all sized aircraft in and out of hangars and glider trailers, as well as oxygen carts. It truly is a wonderful automobile.

I must admit, I sometimes joke about my Jeep being a POC. However, to be fair, I purchased my first one last year (2WD) from a dishonest seller, and it had never been serviced except for oil changes. The battery was 13 years old! After taking care of the old and decaying engine bay, the car has become a gem. The engine and transmission are still rock solid. I bought it with 170K miles on it and have driven over 40K miles in the past year. Although the car was overpriced for what I was getting, the interior was spotless. The speakers still sound really nice with classic '80s music playing. The seats are in much better condition than my SO's '07 Saturn. I love this car so much that I bought another one. This one is a 4WD and is in rougher shape due to leather seats and a busted front light, but I'm ready to make it just as nice as my current one. I would never trade my Jeep for another. If you're interested in buying a JGC Laredo, just make sure you focus on a few things: Is the PCM in good shape? How does it sound on the test drive? What do the hoses look like? And lastly, if the interior is good, then you're golden.

Hey there! You've got a very strong vehicle that can take whatever you can dish out!

This is my 3rd Grand Cherokee since 1993. I really like this style much better than the new one and I can't bring myself to get rid of it. Although the mileage is not great, the 5.9 engine and all-wheel drive make this a true performance vehicle. In terms of looks, performance, practicality, and features, this is the best car I've ever had!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Grand Cherokee. When I first got it, I used to drive it 2 hours back and forth to work. It made the wretched commute tolerable and I was so grateful for it. Now, I use it for my dog car and it has been very reliable. With 103K miles on it, the extended warranty has expired and that makes me a bit nervous. However, the repairs that were necessary were covered under the warranty. Overall, I highly recommend Grand Cherokees - this is my second one. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

This is my first Jeep and I'm really enjoying it so far! Although it's over 14 years old and needs a few repairs, I love how it handles on the road. It's great to know that I can get over 500 miles per tank and even at 60mph, I can still get 23mpg which is as good as the new ones. Even around town, I still get a pretty good 19mpg. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

I hope you're having a good day! Although, I understand that it can be frustrating when things keep breaking. It's never fun to deal with that kind of stress.

Bought mine 2nd owner, low miles. Loved driving it: comfortable, stylish and plenty of power. However, I did experience some maintenance and reliability issues after about 50k miles, such as tire/rotor troubles and replaced brakes. Unfortunately, the front drive shaft went out during a road trip 500 miles from home, which was quite inconvenient. Despite these issues, I enjoyed my time with the car and ultimately decided to trade it before pouring any more cash down the hole.

It's great to hear that you've owned this car for 4 years now! You mentioned that the car is really fast and performs well in the snow, which is fantastic. It's interesting to hear that you test drove a BMW M3 and found that the Jeep has more torque. However, it's unfortunate that Jeep didn't do a great job with the construction of the car, particularly with the rear differential. It seems like all 5.9s have this problem. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Overall, I have to admit that I love this truck. It's incredibly quick (especially with a few cheap bolt-ons), rides decently, and has more off-road ability than 99% of drivers would ever need. However, my main complaint is the build quality and reliability. Unfortunately, my poor Jeep has spent more time in the shop than I care to add up. I would have gladly paid a couple more thousand for it if Jeep had put a little more effort into quality control.
