1999 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Negative 1999 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

After 16 years of ownership, here's my take on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo V8 4.7L AUTO/PS/PB/AC/etc. Let me start with the good: The exterior paint job is excellent and shows no signs of wear. Hats off to the paint department at Chrysler on this one. The interior is also in excellent shape, with no cracks or weathering on the dashboard. The 4.7V8 engine has good power and has been very reliable, with only one exhaust manifold replaced. The transmission is solid, with just a sensor that went that made it shifting from 2-3 gear slip. Of course, I've always changed my oil at 3,500 miles and done the tranny flush on a scheduled basis. Visibility is awesome, some you cannot find today except in a Subaru Forester. Towing is also awesome. The size, particularly the length, is spot-on at 181 inches. Today's mid-sized SUVs routinely occupy the 190+ inch range. The seats are comfortable and still hold up, although they are not great on long journeys (500+ mile days). The fuel economy is low, but not different than what I expected, and it runs on 85 octane. Now, let's talk about the bad: Electrical issues, sensors, water pump, radiator split, CV boots, leaking axles, AC, oil pump sensor, PCM - 3 times thus far and counting. Unfortunately, all these failures started occurring around the 90k mile mark and have consistently nickel and dimed me all the way to the 141k mark (where I'm currently at). I cannot trust the Jeep to go anywhere other than locally in town. Having paid close attention to the tranny and electrical issues on the '14 JGC, and the fact that Chrysler corporate fatcat execs eliminated the rear flip window, something I use every day, I'll be running with the 2017 4Runner when it comes in December '16...Overall, the Jeep has met my needs. However, for people who keep their vehicles for a long time, dependability, reliability, and durability are lacking.

Pros: This SUV looks great, drives great, and is very comfortable. It also has plenty of torque. However, it is important to note that fuel mileage and reliability may be areas of concern. The vehicle has required several repairs in the past 1.5 years, including tie rod ends, a front hub assembly, rear axle bearings, exhaust manifold gaskets, door control modules, a crankshaft position sensor, striker switches in doors, the HVAC unit, and the battery twice. It is worth noting that the vehicle was purchased with 93k miles and is used primarily for commuting to and from work on rural roads. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving it and appreciate its many positive qualities.

v8 quad drive, every option. Purdy to some, BUT.... Terrible car.

I'm from the Detroit area and my family has always been loyal to American car manufacturers. However, our experience with our Jeep Grand Cherokee, which we purchased in 1999, has been disappointing. Unfortunately, it has required frequent repairs, averaging 3-4 times a year since we've owned it. Even after the warranty expired, we continued to experience issues, such as the PCM module dying at 38K and a transmission leak at 41K. Despite our efforts to resolve these issues with Chrysler, we were left unsatisfied. Ultimately, reliability is the most important factor when it comes to cars, which is why we have decided to switch to an Acura MDX. Thank you for understanding.

I am disappointed with my Jeep vehicle due to the numerous repairs I have had to make, costing over $4,000 in just over 2 years. The issues include leaks in hoses, blown water pumps, power windows failure, and many electrical and mechanical malfunctions and defects, as well as defective sensors, major transmission and engine problems. Additionally, the poor resale values due to Jeep's reputation for poor quality and reliability are worth considering. I have come to the conclusion that it would have been more cost-effective to have bought a BMW or Mercedes sports car, as they have higher resale values.

I brought my Jeep with 111 miles. At first, I experienced some brake issues and had to make some repairs. Unfortunately, I later found out that the dealership was overcharging me. Despite these setbacks, I have done a lot of travelling with this Jeep and I have been impressed with its excellent mileage. I have been able to travel for up to 4.5 hours on a single tank of gas, even when driving at high speeds. Although the driver's seat needs to be reupholstered, the AC is still working well. Overall, I think it's been a good deal, especially since I've been able to keep it for so long and it still looks great when cleaned.

I bought this vehicle back in 2001 and have enjoyed it ever since. I had the transfer case rebuilt in 2006, which is a common issue, and unfortunately, the A/C stopped working earlier this year. It's always fun to take it out on back trails every once in a while, and my wife loves getting back to nature in it. It pulls our T.T. with ease, and I particularly appreciate its tight turning radius. I've just kept up with regular maintenance, and I'll be sure to update you when I reach 200,000 miles.

You're so lucky! It's amazing how well your Grand Cherokee Ltd has held up, with only the brake issue being a problem. Even though you drive it fast and hard all the time, it handles great, except for the side-to-side rocking over bumps, which takes some getting used to. The 6 cylinder and AWD (not Quadra that came with the V8's) make towing your 20' boat a breeze. The upright comfy seating and high-quality leather make for a comfortable ride. It's a midsized SUV (think station wagon) that looks even better than the latest model. You must have known what you were buying when you got your '93 Grand Cherokee Limited too!

This is my second Grand Cherokee and it's the best vehicle I've had! With 57,000 miles and no problems, I'll be driving it for many years to come.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1999 Jeep. It has been a reliable companion for many years, and I have driven it all over the place! Despite having about 160,000 miles on it, it still runs great. I recently moved to a warmer climate, but unfortunately, the AC stopped working. Luckily, it was just a couple of small parts that needed to be replaced, along with a vent door problem. Thankfully, I had a 100,000 mile warranty, so all of the minor issues were taken care of by the dealer. It's still my daily driver and I couldn't be happier with my 4th Jeep!
