Rivian problems

Rivian Automotive, Inc., is an American electric vehicle manufacturer and automotive technology and outdoor recreation company founded in 2009. Rivian produces an electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) and pickup truck on a "skateboard" platform that can support future vehicles or be adopted by other companies. An electric delivery van, the Rivian EDV, is also being produced. Rivian started deliveries of its R1T pickup truck in late 2021. The company planned to build an exclusive charging network in the United States and Canada by the end of 2023.

Rivian is based in Irvine, California, with its manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, and other facilities in Palo Alto, California; Carson, California; Plymouth, Michigan; Vancouver, British Columbia; Wittmann, Arizona; Woking, England; and Belgrade, Serbia. Rivian has plans to build another US$5 billion factory in the State of Georgia. The company raised over US$13.5 billion in financing following its initial public offering in November 2021.

History

The company was founded in Rockledge, Florida in 2009 as Mainstream Motors by Robert "RJ" Scaringe. After being renamed as Avera Automotive or Avera Motors, and finally Rivian Automotive in 2011 (a word play on the Indian River in Florida, where Scaringe grew up), the company began focusing on autonomous and electric vehicles.

Rivian's first car model was intended to be a sports car. This vehicle, dubbed the R1, was prototyped as a mid-engine hybrid coupe for the U.S. market, designed by Peter Stevens. However, it was shelved in late 2011 as Rivian looked to restart its business in an effort to have a larger impact on the automotive industry.

Rivian received a large investment and grew significantly in 2015, opening research facilities in Michigan and the San Francisco Bay Area. Shortly thereafter, Rivian began working exclusively on electric autonomous vehicles, in an attempt to build a network of related products. It also began gearing its prototypes toward the "ride-sharing and driverless car markets."

By September 2016, Rivian was negotiating to buy a manufacturing plant formerly owned by Mitsubishi Motors in Normal, Illinois. In January 2017, Rivian acquired the plant and its manufacturing contents for $16 million, with the plant to become Rivian's primary North American manufacturing facility. Rivian's acquisition of a near production-ready facility instead of building a new factory has been likened to Tesla's acquisition of the NUMMI plant in California.

In December 2017, Rivian revealed its first two products: an electric five-passenger pickup truck and an electric seven-passenger SUV, provisionally named the A1T and A1C, respectively. In November 2018, the truck and SUV were renamed the R1T and R1S, respectively, and unveiled at the LA Auto Show. Both vehicles were described as ready for rough terrain and semi-autonomous, and the company outlined a plan for its next generation of models to be fully autonomous. Production was scheduled to begin in 2020.

Rivian had 250 employees at the start of 2018. By February 2019, however, Rivian was employing 750 people across facilities in Michigan, Illinois, California, and the United Kingdom. In November 2020, Rivian employed 3,000-plus workers. Over the span of another year, employment roughly tripled, and in November 2021, Rivian was listed as having 9,000-plus employees.

In late 2020, Rivian planned to begin shipments of the R1T in June 2021. The June 2021 date later slipped to August. By August, vehicle shipments were delayed again, partly due to the global shortage of chips. In September 2021, Rivian became the first automaker to bring a fully electric pickup to the consumer market, beating industry mainstays such as GM, Ford, and Tesla. In October 2021, Rivian began delivering the R1T truck to customers.

On November 10, 2021, Rivian became a public company through an IPO. 153 million shares were sold at an initial offering price of $78.00, valuing the company at $66.5 billion. The shares began trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker "RIVN". On its first trading day, the stock closed at $100.73 per share, valuing the company at just under $100 billion. On November 19, 2021, Ford and Rivian announced that the two automakers no longer plan to co-develop an electric vehicle. Ford announced the company would retain a 12 percent stake in Rivian, which reached a value of more than $10 billion after the IPO. Ford sold around 90 percent of its stake in Rivian for $3 billion by the end of 2022, an increase from its $1.2 billion investment. In December 2021, at the same time that Rivian began to deliver its R1S SUVs, Rivian's chief operations officer, Rod Copes, stepped down and retired from the company as it began to ramp up production of its vehicles.

On March 1, 2022, Rivian announced price increases of 17% for the R1T and 20% for the R1S, citing a shortage of semiconductors and higher costs for other components. There was immediate backlash from customers that had previously made reservations as the price hike would also affect their preorders. Rivian later apologized for the retroactive price increases and stated that the original configured price would be honored for anyone with a Rivian preorder as of the March 1 pricing announcement. On March 14, 2022, Rivian announced the company hired Frank Klein as its COO (chief operations officer). Klein began on June 1, 2022.

In March 2022, Rivian made it to TIME's List of 100 Most Influential Companies of the year 2022. On July 27, 2022, Rivian announced it would reduce its workforce by 6% in response to high inflation, rising interest rates, and an increase in parts prices. In August 2022, regulatory filings revealed that investor George Soros sold roughly $8.5 million of shares of the company. The reason behind this sale is not definitively known; it could reflect the fund's overall sentiment or might be a tax-loss harvesting strategy to balance other capital gains. Concurrently, the fund purchased shares in Tesla, an electric autonomous vehicle company and manufacturer of the Cybertruck, and Ford, the manufacturer of the F-150 Lightning. In September 2022, Rivian signed an MoU with Mercedes-Benz Group to establish a joint venture to invest in and operate a factory in Europe, producing large commercial electric vans starting in a few years. The facility will have a common assembly line to produce a different design for each company. The New York Times characterized the move as "a rare example of cooperation between a traditional carmaker and a new challenger" and noted that Mercedes' extensive experience in manufacturing may allow Rivian to overcome its own issues with it. Rivian said this planned partnership would not go forward with this plan in December 2022 but stated that future collaborations may still be possible. After the company received seven reports of loose torque bolts that did not result in injury, in October 2022, Rivian issued a voluntary recall of 13,000 vehicles.

In January 2023, The Wall Street Journal reported the company experienced the departure of multiple top executives in recent months, including some that were among its longest-tenured employees, in what was referred to as a "challenging period for Rivian."

On June 20, 2023, Rivian announced that it would incorporate Tesla's electric vehicle charging standard, the North American Charging Standard (NACS) into its R1T trucks and R1S SUVs in 2025, as well as in its upcoming R2 platform. As early as the second quarter of 2024, Rivian owners may be able to use adapters to connect to Tesla's Supercharger network.

A day after the big NACS announcement, on June 21, Rivian announced the acquisition of Iternio, the Swedish mapping company known for its popular EV route-planning app, A Better Route Planner (ABRP), and integrated it into the in-car navigation system. In addition to Rivian mobile app integration, the company said it plans to maintain the standalone ABRP app.

In late 2023, it was reported that Amazon's total fleet size of the EDV had reached 10,000 units. In October 2023, the company also ended the exclusivity deal it had with Amazon, allowing Rivian to supply other commercial customers with its electric delivery vehicles. In December 2023 telecommunications company AT&T announced it would take delivery of the trucks from Rivian as part of a trial process for its fleet.

Rivian will break ground on a new Georgia manufacturing facility in early 2024. The company says the plant will have an annual production capacity of 400,000 units when fully complete and is located forty minutes from Atlanta. However, on March 7, 2024, Rivian announced that it would delay their new manufacturing facility.

On February 21, 2024, Rivian announced it would be laying off 10% of its salaried workers beginning on February 23, 2024. On March 7, 2024 Rivian unveiled the R2 SUV that starts from $45,000, much less than current models, and the R3, that will cost even less than the R2.

Common Rivian problems

Rivian, an electric vehicle (EV) startup, has been facing significant challenges in terms of vehicle production and quality. One of the major issues is that Rivian is reportedly losing money on every vehicle it sells, with a loss of around US$33,000 (A$51,000) per vehicle. This is due to the complex design of its electric R1T ute and R1S SUV, which has led to difficulties in the manufacturing process.

The complex design of the Rivian vehicles has resulted in a high level of chassis rigidity for stability and safety purposes. However, this has added weight and complexity to the manufacturing process. The company's 'skateboard' type chassis, which places the battery packs as the centre of the construction, has also added to the complexity. This design requires a number of metal sheets to slide into each other, and various structural tubes have to be welded twice – once on the inside and again by hand on the exterior. Workers have even had to reportedly hammer various pieces to get them to fit.

The R1T and R1S's self-levelling air-suspension and hydraulic anti-roll bars have also contributed to the complexity of the manufacturing process. Additionally, Rivian has reportedly pushed for large amounts of components to be designed in-house, rather than purchasing less expensive parts from established manufacturers. This has led to the use of separate electronic control units for the battery and drive functions, which are usually designed to handle multiple functions but had to be kept separate in order to meet production deadlines.

The company's plan to release three models in quick succession has also hindered its ability to work out production snags. COVID-related shutdowns and supply chain delays have further exacerbated the situation. To address these issues, Rivian engineers have been tasked with shaving US$40,000 (A$62,000) off production and part costs, although the company has reportedly declined to comment on the cost-cutting targets.

In terms of reliability, the 2022 Rivian R1T is expected to be less reliable than the average new car. This prediction is based on the 2022 model, plus the Rivian brand scores. The Reliability score is based on the latest subscriber survey of 2022 Rivian R1T owners, with owner comments describing problems respondents experienced with this vehicle. Some of the specific issues reported by owners include premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking, infotainment system, rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display, squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks, windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls, seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect, cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad, paint, loose interior or exterior trim or moldings, rust, climate system, shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage, power steering, wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension, driveline vibration, electrical failure, traction control, electronic stability control, oil leak, electric drive failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.

In summary, Rivian is facing significant challenges in terms of vehicle production and quality, with the company reportedly losing money on every vehicle it sells due to the complexity of its designs. The 2022 Rivian R1T is expected to be less reliable than the average new car, with a range of specific issues reported by owners. The company is taking steps to address these issues, but it remains to be seen how successful these efforts will be.

  • Summary: I purchased my vehicle new from Rivian Automotive in November 2023. My rear tire went flat (to 4 PSI) while driving on the freeway on Dec 11, 2023. There was no warning message on the dash that my tire was even low. The truck kept swerving left and right between the lane markers like the lane assist was malfunctioning. Another driver got my attention to let me know my tire was flat. I had my SUV towed to America's Tire where they confirmed that there were no punctures in the tire and that it was defective. This could have resulted in a serious accident simply because I was not given proper warning about the tire pressure.

  • Summary: Passenger airbag sensor does not detect passenger reliably. My 13 year old son and my wife both have issues. They are both over 120 lbs, so I think they should trigger the sensor. I have had it serviced for this issue, but it did not fix the problem. It also will detect a person in the seat during a drive and turn off later in that same trip without stopping the car. It seems to me that the sensor needs to be more sensitive. And, once it detects a person in the seat, it should keep the airbag on until the car is stopped and door opened. My wife does not feel safe in the car as it stands now.

  • Summary: The passenger side airbag notification shows that the airbag is disabled when a passenger is seated in the seat and the car is moving. This happens very frequently when driving at various speed. If the passenger is not seated exactly at 90 degrees deeply in the seat in a perfect position, the airbag will be disabled. The sensitivity of the airbag sensor is very concerning. No one will sit straight position perfectly in a car, especially on longer rides and this is very scary to put the passenger at risk. The vehicle has been brought up for service for this particular issue and there has been no resolutions as it is deem "per the specs" by the service center. The problem has been reproduced by them, but again it was not repaired or fixed since it is diagnosed as normal operation.

  • Summary: Our son no matter how we try and position him his chin is touching his chest and starts to bubble during our car rides in the mesa max. He also seems to overheat in it and comes out sweaty even with the shortest car ride. We contacted the mfg and they told us he was too big for infant inserts and too small in the bucket itself.. and to wrap a dish towel around the crouch buckle to help keep him push back more. We then met with a company rep who added additional padding in the back of the seat to help position him better. None or these “fixes” really seemed to help in my opinion, as he still screams and bubbles when in this seat.

  • Summary: I received a critical safety recall regarding side air bags from Rivian regarding my 2023 R1S on June 14. After multiple attempts by me to connect with their Customer Service, I was informed that a mobile service technician would come to fix the issue on August 26, 2024. This would be more than 60 days after Rivian's initial notification. Additionally, on July 6 2024, when I turned on the vehicle, I was notified of multiple system failures. I promptly created an incident ticket with Rivian on this but have to yet hear back from Rivian. Rivian's lax attitude on getting such critical issues fixed is of great concern. The vehicle is barely over a year old since I have owned it and I feel distrustful of this company and thoroughly disappointed by their nonchalant approach to getting these critical issues fixed.

  • Summary: My right front passenger seat does not detect adult occupants reliably, and therefore does not enable the airbags. My wife is approximately 105 pounds and sits in the seat in a standard upright fashion without leaning back. Her legs are not crossed and are just resting on the floor. it is rare that the vehicle detects her presence and therefore she is rarely protected by the safety restraint system in the event of an accident. I brought the vehicle into Rivian Service and they inspected and said the sensor is working properly and is designed to detect occupants roughly 105 to 110 pounds. They said there is nothing that they can do about it. Every other vehicle I currently own and have owned in the past properly detects her presence for the SRS system.

  • Summary: The Rivian is designed to kill fat people. The Airbag for the passenger seat does not function if there is a large person in the seat or the seat is very far forward with a normal person. When someone sits in the passenger seat the lower left corner of the central display changes from “Passenger Airbag Off” to the passenger climate control display. If you pull the seatbelt all the way out the display reverts back to the “Passenger Airbag Off” sign. The seat belt has to retract about 6 inches back into the B pillar for the climate control display to come back on. If the seat belt can’t retract far enough back into the B pillar, you have to drive around with an inoperable passenger seatbelt. I have been able to duplicate this feature on every Rivian I have tried it on. This has been reported to Rivian. A mechanic was sent to my house to repair this. It couldn’t be repaired as expected. I was told the problem would be elevated to a safety issue and sent to engineering. That was in the beginning of February 2024. No answers or fix yet. I have video of the problem, but mp4 files are not accepted below. Please contact me if you would like video.

  • Summary: We have a fleet of these Rivian delivery vehicles and they all have the same issue: the shift lever is made of inferior materials and insufficiently designed. The operator manipulates the shift lever to place the vehicle in drive and the lever breaks off. The vehicle is then stuck in gear and cannot be shifted. This is causing near miss incidents due to the operator being unable to safely control the vehicle. Example: operator places the vehicle in "D" to drive forward but is then unable to place the vehicle in "R" to reverse backward, or to place the vehicle in "P" to park. There are no warnings or indications that the failure is about to occur. These units have been inspected by the manufacturer and their representatives but they refuse to address the concern and prefer to instead charge the owner/operator for replacement of the defective part.

  • Summary: The passenger side airbag shows that it is turned off about 50% of the time that my wife is riding in the passenger seat. She meets the minimum weight requirement for passenger airbag deployment. If she moves around in the seat the airbag off light will go out temporarily but usually comes back on within several miles of driving. This vehicle is available for inspection. When this happens my wife or any other passenger is at risk of not having an airbag if an accident was to occur. This issues has been looked at several times by the manufacturer and I was told that the vehicle is operating as intended. No resonable solution was offered. The only solution from the manufacturer was to have the passenger move around or adjust the seat until the airbag came on. Then have the passenger stay in that position for the duration of the ride. We’ve tried this and it doesn’t work the airbag still turns off.
