2016 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.

Development

The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.

As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.

The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.

The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.

Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."

Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common 2016 Jeep Grand cherokee problems

The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee has received fewer complaints than the 2015 and 2014 models, but there are still common issues that owners have reported.

  • Oil Leaks: Another common problem is oil leaks from the pan, which can be caused by a variety of factors. Depending on where the leak is coming from, replacing either the oil pan or rear main seal can fix the problem.
  • Interior Material Quality: Some owners have reported issues with the interior material quality, including leather peeling from the dashboard. This is most common in places where the vehicle is exposed to a lot of heat, and can be caused by the glue failing due to the heat.
  • Recalls: There have been seven recalls affecting the 2016 Grand Cherokee, more than average for an SUV from 2016. These recalls include problems with the brake calipers, transmission shift interlock, fuel rail tube, supercharger bracket, cruise control, crank position sensor, and EGR cooler. All of these recalls are serious, as they can cause mechanical problems that risk passenger safety.
  • Air Suspension: The air suspension system in the Jeep Grand Cherokee can also cause problems. The "Quadra-Lift" suspension allows the user to raise and lower the car at their whim, but it can get expensive if it breaks. Owners have reported issues with the compressor failing, as well as leaks in the air lines and air springs.
  • TIPM Sensor Problems: The Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) sensor in the 2011 Grand Cherokee had some issues that were solved in later models. However, it's still worth checking to ensure that any recalls related to the TIPM sensor have been done if you're looking at or own a 2011-2013 Grand Cherokee.

In conclusion, while the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee has fewer complaints than previous models, there are still common issues that owners have reported. These include transmission problems, oil leaks, interior material quality issues, recalls, air suspension problems, and TIPM sensor problems. It's important to be aware of these issues and to ensure that any recalls related to these problems have been done if you're considering purchasing a 2016 Grand Cherokee.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 1C4RJFBMXGC
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On October 26, 2024, I stopped at a gas station to pick up a few items, turning my vehicle off before going inside. When I returned about five minutes later, the vehicle wouldn’t start. The fuel pump module wasn’t supplying fuel to the high-pressure pump. Since it wouldn’t start, I left it at the station overnight. The next afternoon, after about an hour of attempts, the fuel pump module finally engaged, and the vehicle started, running normally. This issue had actually occurred once before, about a year ago, while I was pulling out into traffic. At that time, the vehicle stalled, and I had to push it out of traffic and into a nearby parking lot. The fuel pump module was also silent then, indicating it wasn’t functioning. Fortunately, after around five minutes, I was able to restart the vehicle without further issues. The vehicle hasn’t exhibited this issue since—until last night. If you research this problem online, it seems there are other reports of similar incidents with Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ram 1500 models equipped with the EcoDiesel engin

I suffered a head concussion and neck injury due to whiplash and bumping my head. I called the Jeep Company and claimed about the side/curtains airbags not deploying, they said they will send someone to check the car and investigate, they also made me sign the order authorizing them to check the car and after doing the investigation they sent me a letter with a vague explanation and no copy of the report that supports it. POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
  • VIN: 1C4RJFBG0GC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I've had issues with my vehicle since 2021 -engine light first appeared on the dashboard and towed my car to a Jeep dealership. Vehicle was "repaired" (have the documentation, if needed), but the engine light remained on. I have since driven this vehicle for nearly 3 years with the engine light on, bringing it into different Jeep dealerships (all documentation on record if needed) to repair and was told there was nothing they could find wrong with the engine. Last year (2023) my electronic stability control and 4WD lights came on in addition to the engine light. My car was sliding all over the road and my 4WD was not engaging at all. Brought vehicle to Jeep dealership for repair, was told ABS module needs to be replaced and the traction control is malfunctioning; no 4 wheel drive engagement; that the ABS module has been discontinued and the only way to replace this is to get an after market part. Contacted Mopar and was told there is "no way of knowing if it's available and it's beyond their capability". I was told the after market part would be tied to a specific VIN. I then contacted the Jeep Dealership- Parts department and explained the situation, asking if there's any other way I can fix this part in my vehicle. Was told there's nothing I can do since it's discontinued, that it's odd that a part for a 2016 vehicle would be discontinued, and I could check junkyards for parts but am not likely to find a match since my vehicle is not that old. I live in Colorado and in the last 2 winter months have been terrified to drive when it rains or snows because I have NO traction and am sliding THROUGH traffic lights and stop signs, even going at a very slow speed. I ended up in the next lane over when slowly driving up a hill on a main road. The value of this 2016 vehicle is miniscule compared to value when I purchased; this places safety of MYSELF AND OTHERS at risk. My partner is experiencing a similar issue with his 2014 Cherokee - discontinued part and safety issues.

STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-03
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1C4RJFCGXGC
  • Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I'm not sure what components malfunctioned but my vehicle is in a body shop currently getting work done from the accident I was recently in. The safety of my cousin and I was put into risk when I was driving on the highway and I hydroplaned on the highway and did a 180 degree turn but luckily no one hit me and I didn't hit anyone else. I slammed on the concrete median which is what stopped my vehicle on the highway leaving my vehicle with 9 thousand in damages. I filed an insurance claim and is now getting fixed like I mentioned. Prior to the accident I had noticed the car shifting to the left and dramatically declining acceleration and a loud pop by the front driver tire. That is the best way to describe what the car does. So on the day of the incident I believe the car did what I just explained and it caused me to hydroplane and I'm in fear it is going to happen again. I have taken it to another shop after the accident because my vehicle would not start and a different shop said they heard the noise but could not figure out what it was. When I get my vehicle back I planned on taking it to a recall center but I decided to make this report first. There were no warning lights before during or after the accident.

  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Ram 1500 and 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.0L diesel engines. • Consequence: An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: FCA US will notify owners, and dealers will update the powertrain control module software to maintain vehicle propulsion by reading the camshaft position signal in the event that the crankshaft position signal is lost, free of charge. • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.
  • Consequence: If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

Negative 2016 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

  1. Gunner Bednar 2024-09-23

I have owned a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the past and was looking forward to loving this one. However, I found the ride to be much rougher than expected and the interior was just fine, nothing special. Despite this, I am hopeful that the newly redesigned model will be a significant improvement.

  2. Barney Nitzsche 2024-05-06

The vehicle experienced significant issues at a mere 4,000 miles, requiring multiple visits to the dealership's service department. Unfortunately, over the past 6 months, it has spent a total of 38 days (and counting) in the service department due to persistent issues with the electronics/software. Despite reaching out to Jeep & Chrysler for assistance, they have stated that they are unable to provide any support.

  3. Torey Deckow 2024-05-02

I have experienced multiple issues with my 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland High Altitude within the first year of ownership. Despite initial difficulty in replicating the issue, I persisted in seeking a solution and eventually had the shifter replaced. However, the issue recurred after a short period of time. Rather than tearing apart the transmission, Jeep opted to install a flight recorder to better diagnose the issue. During this time, I also had to have a taillight replaced and experienced issues with plastic molding and a warped cargo panel. Additionally, I have had two instances of malfunctioning auto windshield wipers and multiple check engine lights. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in the ability of the dealership and Jeep to address these issues and ensure the continued performance of my vehicle.I upgraded my warranty to lifetime at the dealer since I paid a significant amount for this vehicle. Although my shifter issues remain unresolved, I am confident that any future issues will be addressed. While I have experienced some problems, I remain satisfied with my purchase overall.

The Jeep's transmission can be unpredictable and rough, especially when shifting from 0 to 1st gear at low speeds. Despite having taken my Jeep in for this issue three times, I was told that this is just how it works. Additionally, the Limited 75th edition has 20 inch wheels, which are larger than the wheel well's intended size of 18 inches. This means that the tires have to be low profile to fit, which can make long car trips or off-roading less enjoyable. Unfortunately, I've had three tire blowouts in the 11 months that I've owned the Jeep, which is more than I've experienced with any other vehicle I've owned. While I used to love the Jeep brand, my experience with the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 75th Anniversary Edition has left me disappointed. I would not recommend this vehicle and am currently looking to trade it in.

The Toyota 4Runner has a power rear glass, which is a great feature for dog owners who use it every day. While the reliability of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is still questionable, it's important to note that the 2014 model had some quality assurance issues. If you're considering purchasing a 2016 JGC, it's recommended to get the lifetime maxcare warranty. It's also worth noting that Chrysler's customer support and dealership shops have received some negative feedback.

Positive 2016 Jeep Grand cherokee car reviews

  1. Kody Heathcote 2024-10-29

This is actually my second JEEP Laredo, but my first Grand Cherokee. I'm really enjoying the ride and the versatility of this SUV. The interior and exterior are both well-designed, and I'm very pleased with the overall package. I'm still getting the hang of all the features, but I have the tow, safety, and off-road packages, as well as a sunroof. It's definitely a great buy!

  2. Domingo Bechtelar 2024-10-25

I love my JGC 75th Edition! It's black with bronze and it looks absolutely beautiful. While I do have a small complaint about the start/stop feature, I still think this vehicle is amazing. If only there was a way to disable the feature until I want it, that would be perfect. I also think LED lights should come standard on this vehicle, especially since it is a Special Edition. Overall, I am very impressed with the handling, ride, and get up and go of this vehicle. It definitely turns heads!

  3. Leonel Collins 2024-10-05

This is a great review! The car is very comfortable and I think it rides better with the 18

  4. Quinn Armstrong 2024-10-05

The start-stop feature is a major drawback that would prevent me from considering this car in the future. Its operation is suboptimal and detracts from the overall driving experience. Additionally, there are persistent rattles in the dashboard that have yet to be resolved. Overall, these issues significantly detract from the car's appeal.

  5. Theodore Kuvalis 2024-09-09

I recently purchased this car after driving a Ford Edge for 5 years. Although I did not have any issues with the Edge, I wanted more options for my 30-mile commute, especially when facing less than optimal driving conditions. It's always good to have the capability to negotiate obstacles or drive through unusual road and surface conditions to avoid traffic. The ride is comfortable, and the navigation system is very up to date. The 6-cylinder engine is perfect in terms of fuel economy, terrain adaptability, and speed/power combination. Once you get the hang of the entertainment system controls, it's like playing an instrument. You don't need to look at the road, and selecting media, radio, or phone is very safe since you won't need to look at the distracting displays. I have the adaptive cruise control and collision warning, which is a welcomed feature when driving in fog, rain, dusk, and dawn on my daily commute. I thought about the SRT, but decided against it since overall, the 4WD 3.6-engine of the high altitude balances all of these features (power, speed, economy, and price) in a smart way. I had an issue with the passenger door alignment, but this was addressed timely and in a way that did not inconvenience me as a customer. The dealer was responsive and diligent. After this issue, I have nothing but praise for the car. Although I would have liked to have more legroom for rear passengers and the rear seats designed for 4+ hours trips i.e. more comfortable, the car is still a great choice. The only major observation is the lack of roof racks. For a car that promotes an active lifestyle, having to buy roof racks that latch on to the door opening is sub-optimal. I advise negotiating the chrome package with the purchase of the car since this will enhance the looks while protecting your investment.
