The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

- Summary: Just prior to a cross country trip, my airbag warning light came on. Upon arriving to our destination in Spring Hill, TN, I took my 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee to have it checked. Their diagnosis found a "squib" problem, and told me there was a recall and to take it to a Chrysler dealer. Today, the dealership showed me a "squib" or "clockspring" issue & told me there was no recall and that I would have to pay out of pocket to replace what seems to be the recall problem. Upon further research, I found online that there is indeed a recall. But after calling the phone number provided, (800-853-1403) they informed me that even though it might be the same problem I would have to pay out of pocket for the repair. I don't understand why. I have no idea what is causing this but the speedometer/odometer does not work at all (all the lights and warning symbols work, cruise control doesn't work, TPM is lit up on the dash as I checked all the tires and all has same to, the key fob buttons worked when it wanted to (has NEW battery it was replaced 3'xs already) key fob would not stop alarm from going off most days and key fob would also not start my Jeep would have to keep trying before it did start and now IT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING. IT DOESN'T START DOESN'T TURN OVER NOTHING expect for the alarm going off non stop had to disconnect the horn and we pulled a relay to have it stop. We tried disconnecting the battery post to hopefully reset it, didn't work. I also had a res dot start blinking and I read up on all this and red dot is anti theft was activated. I been reading up on the reason and I keep getting the wireless control module and sentry key as the problem. I also seen that many other vehicles same as mine has had the same exact same problem. Some had theirs come up as a recall. Why is this vehicle listed as not having any recalls. Clearly something is going on with these vehicles that shouldn't be. I for one didn't cause this problem and I certainly can not afford to get this resolved on my own. I had my truck for only 2 weeks before it broke down. PLEASE HELP

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 133,000.

IN ADDITION, THE FRAME AND SUSPENSION WERE SEVERELY RUSTED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE PULLEYS, SHOCKS, BRAKES, AND ROTORS WERE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 132,000.

ALSO, DRIVER'S SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHT WILL NOT SHUT OFF AFTER IGNITION TURNED OFF. RECEIVED CODE B162B INDICATING POSSIBLE ISSUE WITH THE 'INTEGRATED POWER MODULE' ALSO REFERRED TO AS THE 'TIPM'. NOT HAVING A WORKING TURN SIGNAL CREATES AN EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS SITUATION AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY THE DEALER. FAULTY TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS AND HEADLIGHT ISSUES ARE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE TIPM THAT WAS INSTALLED IN THESE VEHICLES BY CHRYSLER FOR WHICH AN IMMEDIATE SAFETY RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED.

2009 Jeep Grand cherokee recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2009 Jeep Grand cherokee.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: POWER TRAIN:TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
- Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
- Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

- Summary: ROCK KRAWLER IS RECALLING 44 PERFORMANCE SUSPENSION SYSTEMS SOLD AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR USE ON THE VEHICLE LISTED ABOVE. THESE SUSPENSION SYSTEMS WERE PRODUCED WITH GRADE 2 CARRIAGE BOLTS INSTEAD OF THE PROPER GRADE 5 CARRIAGE BOLTS. THE IMPROPER GRADE 2 CARRIAGE BOLTS COULD EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF CLAMPING FORCE FOR THE BOTTOM STRUT FORK.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF EFFECTIVE LIFT AND LOWERING OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLE, POSSIBLY CREATING THE DRIVER TO PANIC WHICH COULD POSSIBLY LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: ROCK KRAWLER WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND PROVIDE A FREE REMEDY. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 15. 2008. ALL THE AFFECTED UNTITS HAVE BEEN REMEDIED. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ROCK KRAWLER AT 1-518-270-9822.

- Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG MAY NOT PROPERLY INFLATE AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY PROTECT AN OCCUPANT, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURIES.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG SQUIB WIRES AND REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

I recently purchased the Overland version of the Cherokee with the Hemi engine. It feels like a sports car when accelerating and has a nice throaty roar. I am really enjoying the features such as the navigation/multi-function radio and the IPOD connection. It's great that I can upload CD or IPOD tunes to memory. The navigation system is easy to use and I particularly love the automatic high beam dimmer which switches to low beam when other cars appear. The road handling is very solid and the interior is snug and comfortable. I can't wait to take this vehicle on a road trip. Overall, I am delighted with this vehicle so far.

I have been driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee since 1996 and I just purchased my fifth one! I can confidently say that I have never found a better vehicle. The current Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Hemi (V8 package fully loaded) offers the perfect combination of luxury, handling, and towing that I have ever experienced in any vehicle. As a physician, I require complete reliability in all seasons and this vehicle has never let me down. I use it extensively for both my profession and for leisure activities. In my opinion, the 2009 model is the best vehicle I have ever driven. I challenge you to compare it to any other SUV, but when it comes to luxury, there is simply no comparison. Equipped with GPS/NAV, Sirius Radio/TV, and the Boston Audio, my family is constantly entertained. It truly is an amazing vehicle. If you can afford it, I highly recommend buying it.

This Grand Cherokee is truly exceptional! It has all the features I was looking for, including voice-activated Nav/phone, a backup camera, HID lights, remote start, 1 free year of Sirius satellite radio, an iPod connection, and an HDD to store all of your own music - no more carrying around CDs! And let's not forget the 357hp Hemi. But what really sold me was the ride - it's so smooth, easy, and incredibly quiet. I can't stand cars that have rattles, but this one is perfect. I did a lot of research on the RX 350, X5, and MDX with similar builds and features, and I would have spent $20,000 more. Thanks to employee pricing, rebates, incentives, and auto show cash, I saved $10,000 plus got zero percent financing for 48 months!

I recently purchased a Limited with a 5.7 V8 Hemi engine and I must say, the engine is incredibly powerful and provides excellent acceleration. This is my first Jeep ever and my wife and I are really happy with it so far. Although the build material is decent for an American car, it's not quite as good as some of the other cars we considered, such as the BMW X3 or Audi Q5. However, we ultimately decided on the Grand Cherokee because we got a great deal after the Chrysler rebates and dealer incentives. The only downside we've noticed so far is the gas mileage, which has been a bit dismal for the first tank of gas. But since we're weekend drivers, we're hoping it won't be a major issue. Overall, we're really pleased with our purchase!
