2008 Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.
Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common 2008 Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a popular SUV, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. The following are some of the most frequently reported issues by owners of this car.
- Jeep TIPM Electrical Problems: The TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) is responsible for controlling the electrical functions of the car. In the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the TIPM can fail, causing various electrical problems, such as the engine not starting or the lights not working. To fix this problem, the TIPM needs to be replaced.
- Death Wobble: The death wobble is a phenomenon where the front axle begins to oscillate violently, causing the car to shake or wobble. This issue can be caused by worn or damaged suspension components or tires. To fix this problem, the affected components need to be replaced or repaired.
These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is important to note that not all vehicles of this model and year will experience these issues, and some may not experience any problems at all. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or detect these issues early on, reducing the risk of more serious problems down the road.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-20
- VIN: 1J8GR48K78C
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: While driving down the interstate at approximately 75mph to 80 mph, the driver side air bag curtain deployed with no warning or indication. There was no impact or bump in the road to cause vibration or a false signal to trigger the activation of the air curtain. I was simply driving the vehicle as normal when it deployed. When the airbags deployed, it caused me to swerve due to fear of the load noise, physical impact of air curtain, and visual interference. Fortunately, there was no traffic in the adjacent lanes, and I was able to get to the shoulder of the interstate. After I assessed the situation and calmed my nerves I navigated to my destination under the risk of visual impedance on the driver side. Emergency services was not contacted. The vehicle was not inspected by a professional however it was discussed with certified mechanics. In addition, I contacted the manufacturer in which they responded with..."There are no recalls for this vehicle, the vehicle is 16 years old with over 150K miles therefore they will do nothing. Regardless of the mileage and vehicle age, this should NOT have happened as there was no cause for it to happen. Luckily no additional damage took place or any major injury or fatality.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-12
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 1J8HR58NX8C
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: At approximately 12:05 pm on Monday, 6/12/23, I was making a right turn into a parking spot in front of Golden1 Credit Union, at 1040 E. Cypress Avenue. I was halfway into the turn when my driver's airbag deployed, striking me in the stomach and right hand and forearm. Despite being startled by the loud explosion, I managed to finish parking without hitting either the vehicle next to me or the curb. Approximately 1-2 minutes later, there was a second explosion from the airbag that sprayed small particles at me, again striking my right forearm. The incident left three superficial burn marks on my hand and arm. (I did not photograph them until this moment; only one mark is still visible.) My first thought when the airbag deployed was that I had been shot, as I heard a loud bang, smelled what I thought was gunpowder, and felt pain in my arm and stomach. I happened to be on a phone call with my spouse when it occurred (via hands-free stereo Bluetooth), so he heard the explosion followed by my shriek, and he also heard the second explosion. I had the vehicle towed to my trusted mechanics at Advanced Automotive. My service advisor was curious whether my vehicle (which I purchased used, in 2020) had been part of a safety recall in the past. In addition to his own research, he contacted a colleague at the local Jeep Chrysler dealer regarding same. Neither of them found any recall for my specific VIN, or for my specific vehicle year. He expressed his concern that even if they were to replace the airbag module, there was no guarantee that it would fix whatever had caused it to inadvertently deploy, and he recommended that I seek service from a Jeep/Chrysler dealer and implore them to take accountability for the issue. Prior to this incident, there was never any indication that anything was wrong with any safety system on the vehicle.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-14
- VIN: 1J8HR58298C
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: Traveling at 55mph on Rt. 264 W. in Virginia Beach, VA the right rear tire "exploded" with no warning whatsoever and sent my vehicle out of control coming very close to impacting vehicles on either side. I regained partial control and got the vehicle onto the shoulder. My family was shaken but o.k. State Police arrived. Upon inspection there was very little left of the tire (I will upload pics). Vehicle was brought to "Discount Tire" where close inspection of the remaining tires showed steel belt protruding from the front right tire. I was amazed. The vehicle had recently passed state inspection and was well within wear limits. I paid to have the (2) obviously failed tires replaced and asked Goodyear Customer Service to pay to replace the remaining (2) - all were bought as a set from Walmart. Goodyear Customer Service refused and now I must pay for the work as no one in their right minds would drive around on the remaining (2).. There's a 50/50 chance they would fail as well! It is my understanding these are not their "top of the line tires", but I must ask when it comes to safety what possible difference can that make? We depend on our government to properly test such basic safety related items that can cause death and damage in a moment to any family. I hope the NHTSA will/does thoroughly investigate all Goodyear tires, but especially these sold primarily at Walmart if I understood correctly. This is an incident that simply should not have occurred and even after the fact of TWO of these tires falling apart on the same vehicle, their corporate headquarters refused any responsibility; financial or otherwise.. not even an apology!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-08
- VIN: 1j8hr58n58c
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I have owned this Jeep since approximately 2010 and is in great condition. This has been a great vehicle and has recently began to give us these issues. 1. Something is definitely wrong with the electrical system. It is available for inspection upon request. 2. Temperature gauge not reading, drivers side rear tail light and front passenger side marker lights do not work. Directional and brake light functions work only. Partial illumination on instrument panel, driver side window switch intermittently works, windshield washer intermittently works, defogger / vent function partially working, 1 horn working and vehicle reliability is the safety issue. 3. My mechanic looked at it and is was NOT surprised about all the issues at once. He mentioned the TIPM having issues as many other of his customers having the same issues. 4. My vehicle has not been inspected by anyone else but my mechanic. 5. There were engine light warning lamps that suddenly came on when the lights started to not work, then the other issues followed. Since this is an electrical issue, the vehicle has a possibility of shutting down while driving, as has happened to others.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-17
- VIN: 1j8gr48k18c
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The air bag deployed without the vehicle being in an accident. I was traveling on I80 heading East at 70mph when the airbag deployed. I have not taken it to a dealer, I can't afford the repair bill at this time. No one other than family has inspected the vehicle. It is not an insurance issue. There was no warning that the airbag was going to go off. However there is now a light on in my dash. I do not know what caused the malfunction. I was in the vehicle alone thankfully. It was the passenger side airbag. I have contacted Jeep and they are not accepting any responsibility. They declined the claim as they put it in like 2 hours via e-mail.

Problems unknown. A new starter , alternator & battery has been replaced. And recently my airbag light has came on. Which comes and goes. I’ve had this car since June 2020. and it’s given me the same problem with no one able to tell me what’s wrong with it and I’ve replaced the batteries in the key fob. Today the car was just blank when I put the key in. I’m so confused. Car won’t go over 40 mph. I kept notes and saved receipts and text messages via jeep , via the car salesman , stating how unsafe this car has been….

2008 Jeep Grand cherokee recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2008 Jeep Grand cherokee.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2008 Chrysler 300 vehicles manufactured May 31, 2007, to May 12, 2008, Dodge Magnum vehicles manufactured May 23, 2007, to May 12, 2008, Dodge Charger vehicles manufactured May 24, 2007, to May 12, 2008, Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured April 3, 2007, to May 12, 2008, and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured March 21, 2007, to May 12, 2008. In the affected vehicles, the ignition key (FOBIK) may not return to the "ON" position after being rotated to the "START" position, instead sticking between the two positions. Potentially, while the vehicle is being driven, the ignition may inadvertently move through the "RUN" position to the "ACCESSORY" or "OFF" ignition position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the ignition stays between "START" and "ON" positions it could cause loss of certain electrical functions. If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the "OFF" or "ACCESSORY" position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch and key FOBs, free of charge. The recall began August 19, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P57.

A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
- Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

I bought this car used with 120K miles and it was very well maintained. Although I eventually had to deal with a fuel line leak, a power steering pump leak, and some glow plug replacements, the truck has been reliable and trouble-free since those repairs. I added SRT front and rear stabilizer bars, and it handles surprisingly well for a tall 4800 lb. SUV. It's a ball to drive and still gets 22 MPG overall, and 20 MPG while towing a 3,200 lb. camper at 70 MPH with the cruise and A/C on. Thanks to the GDE tune, it makes about 470+ lb.ft. of torque (about 50 more than the SRT version) at 1800 RPM, so acceleration is effortless. It leaves 5.7L Hemi's behind in traffic. The rear seat legroom is about the same as my wife's Chevy Cruz, so it's on the small side. However, it is about 600 lbs. lighter than the 2020 Grand Cherokee and feels much more nimble. It is rated at 7200 lbs. towing capacity (as is the 5.7L Hemi), while most similar size SUVs are in the 3,500 -4,500 lb. range. It has trailer stability software (standard on the 2008 Limited) and is just as stable towing my 3200 lb. camper as my full-size Chevy van with a 5.7L. It has nice amenities such as adjustable pedals, a 110 Volt plug port, heated front and rear seats, a thick leather steering wheel with controls for IP and audio system. The interior is light and airy with nice-looking (fake) wood trim and light/dark tones. The seats are all-day comfortable, and it has a very comfortable highway ride. It is extremely capable in winter weather (4 WD), and its off-road capability exceeds that of most drivers. This is one of the best all-round cars that I have owned, beating a Porsche Panamera 4S in an impromptu drag where two lanes went to one lane. It has 170K on it, and I plan on getting to >250K. Sprinter vans with this engine have gone 700K. Although I've had some Chrysler reliability issues, the Mercedes V6 diesel has been outstanding. I would give it 5 stars. The GDE tuned 3.0L diesel has been performing exceptionally well, averaging 20-22 MPG in 60/40 city highway driving and 25-26 MPG at 75 MPH. Even when towing a 3200 lb. Bayside camper with the cruise set at 70 MPH and the AC on, it still gets an impressive 19-20 MPG. The Jeep's trailer stability is seamless and it tows slightly better than my previous (much longer) Chevy LT full size van. I can comfortably drive 80 MPH with the Bayside. The GC has Michelin LTX/M/S tires and performs great in the snow with them, getting about 4 MPG higher than its EPA highway rating. Although there have been some repairs required, such as replacing the fuel line due to a leak and shredding the fan belt, I am still very pleased with this vehicle at 176k miles. The driver lower seat cushion (leather - its a Limited model) is cracking and will need to be replaced at some point. Overall, I highly recommend this vehicle and am very satisfied with its performance. The car is amazing! It's smaller in size but packs a punch with its grin-inducing acceleration. In fact, it can compete with some sports cars, including a certain embarrassed Porsche. The handling is also top-notch, as it left a Porsche Panamera 4S in the dust on a tight freeway off-ramp turn. Plus, it has an EPA exceeding fuel economy. Please note that the 'Model' choices did not include the 3.0L CRD engine option.

I recently purchased a JGC Overland with a 5.7 HEMI engine and I must say, it's a fantastic car! The engine is powerful when needed, yet the car remains very quiet. I was initially considering a Range Rover Sport, but after experiencing the JGC's smooth ride and impressive navigation system with a hard drive for music storage, I was sold. If you're thinking about getting a JGC, I highly recommend opting for the HID headlights as they are incredibly bright.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share with you my recent purchase of a 2008 Black Jeep Cherokee Limited (4.7L V-8). It's actually the third Black Jeep Cherokee in our garage, as both my wife and son drive 2004 models. We've been really pleased with the performance, reliability, and quality of these vehicles. I'm even getting 19+ MPG! The 2008 model has all the latest features, including automatic high beams, automatic wipers, iPod compatibility, excellent storage, GPS, and chrome accents that really dress up the exterior, especially on a black vehicle. The only downside is that the leg room is a bit narrow and the pedal configuration for the driver isn't ideal for someone over 6' tall like me. Overall, though, we're really happy with our purchase.

I'm glad to hear that you've upgraded to a SRT Jeep! It sounds like you're having a lot of fun driving it, even in the winter. The acceleration is awesome and it definitely turns heads!

I've been researching SUVs for the past year, looking for something that can handle the snowy conditions we get here in Colorado. After comparing the Ford Escape, Hyundai Santa Fe, and a few others of similar size and price, I stopped at the dealer to check out the '08 GC's. I was pleasantly surprised by how much more comfortable it was compared to the Escape and Santa Fe. I've taken it off-road in the Colorado mountains and it performed great. It's my everyday vehicle and I couldn't be happier with it. I consistently get 18+ mpg in the city, although I haven't driven enough on the highway to get an accurate average. With the rebates and incentives, it was a great value compared to the competition. Now we're a two-Jeep family! You should definitely consider getting one today.

I purchased an '08 Jeep Overland, but unfortunately, I have had a negative experience with it. The sealant on the quarter glass window melted soon after I picked it up, and I had to make numerous calls to Leith Headquarters and Chrysler headquarters before they agreed to fix it. Additionally, the electronic items in the car, including the auto headlights, have failed at various times. The Jeep has also experienced malfunctions such as stalling while driving, speaker failure, hard drive crashes, and data loss. Despite these issues, I remain confident in my ability to address them and ensure that my Jeep is functioning properly.

I purchased this vehicle with the intention of using it for camping and hiking, as Jeeps have a reputation for being great outdoorsy vehicles. However, I have had a very negative experience with this car. In the two years that I have owned it, I have had to replace the starter four times, as well as the water pump, serpentine belt, idle sensor, alternator, idle intake valve, and fuel pump. Additionally, the back driver side window stopped working, the radio rarely worked, and there was a loud hum while driving above 55 mph. Unfortunately, my car is now about to blow a rod or piston, rendering it useless. It is disappointing that a car with only 144,000 miles on it is no longer operational. In contrast, I had a 97 Ford Bronco with 270,000 miles on it that ran just fine without any major repairs. I would caution anyone considering purchasing a Jeep to be aware of these issues. On a positive note, I have since purchased a 2017 Ford Escape, which has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever driven.

This is our second Laredo. We purchased one brand new in '98, which we now use as a third vehicle and for the kids to drive. After driving our new Laredo for a week, we noticed an annoying clicking sound coming from the back of the engine when the radio and everything else was off, except the car itself. We took it back to the dealership and they pulled another '08 off the lot into the service garage and had us listen to it. It had the same noise! They explained that there was nothing wrong with the car and nothing they could do about it. We wish we had known about this before purchasing the '08. Additionally, the car is advertised as 4WD, but it is actually full-time AWD.
