2023 Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.
Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

Common 2023 Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues range from wireless and wired Apple CarPlay failures, unreliable Bluetooth connectivity, and inaccessible navigation. This can be a significant safety concern, especially when driving at highway speeds and being unable to pull over or get off the highway.
Another issue reported is the failure of the rear coil springs, intermediate drive shaft, and camera, all of which have had recalls.
Some owners have reported that the lane departure assist light comes on frequently, indicating that the system requires service. Despite taking the vehicle to the dealership multiple times, technicians have been unable to reproduce the issue, leaving the owner without a resolution.
Computer glitches have also been a common problem, with instances of the vehicle shutting off while driving, the computer crashing and restarting, and the Jeep App not working.
The HVAC system has been reported to cause issues when someone in the back sets a different temperature than the front, causing the fans to run at full blast, leading to discomfort for the occupants.
Jeep is taking steps to address these issues, including reaching out to vehicle owners directly, notifying them about the recalls, and offering free inspections and repairs at dealerships. However, it is essential for owners to be proactive in addressing these problems to ensure their safety and the reliability of their vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: 1C4RJJBG1P8
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The software controlling the driver information system on this vehicle is continually having issues. Randomly, the system will stop working with system rebooting while driving. Normal features like hands free phone calls and navigation will stop responding. This leads to driver confusion and takes attention away from driving the vehicle. Also randomly, chimes will bong with no indication of what is happening on the dash or vehicle display. Attempts have been made for an "over the air" software update via Wi-Fi per the owner's manual, but the owner's manual doesn't accurately describe the navigation and software options of the system (menus incorrect, options are non-existent, etc). This car can be frightening when it suddenly acts up in traffic and there is no indication as to what is happening. This has all randomly happened since the car was new and continues to happen. The date below is just an arbitrary date since it happens consistently since new. This has occurred at any speed or mileage.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 1C4RJKAG3P8
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: I have had 2 incidents in which the 2nd row seat belts on either of the end seats fails to release. The first incident resulted in a seat belt being wrapped around the headrest and unable to release. I had to take the car to a mechanic for it be undone resulting in a broken headrest. This was in May 2024. Today the seatbelt was stuck around my child's abdomen. The seatbelt got tighter around his stomach and he tried get out of it. I parked the car and tried to get the seatbelt to release and it refused to. It continued to get tighter and tighter making it difficult to breathe. I had to call 911 for assistance on the side of the road. 2 police officers had to help me lift him and get him free- the entire time the seatbelt refused to release. My son has bruises and scratches from trying to get out and now is terrified to wear a seatbelt. There is something wrong with the mechanism for the seatbelt that does not allow it release. I am now scared that if we are in an accident and the seatbelt tightens across someone's chest or one of my children's neck that I won't be able to get them out in time. This has been reported to Jeep who advised that I fill out this form.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-31
- VIN: 1C4RJYE67PC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: On 1/31/24, while merging onto a highway(approx 45 mph), I accelerated into the lane in front of a truck. As I pressed the gas pedal nothing happened. The engine did not rev and I did not accelerate. I swerved on to the shoulder and coasted for several hundred feet and came to a stop. I put the car in park, turned off the vehicle and restarted it. Operated normally after that. The second instance of loss of motive power was on 3/11/24. Turning right on a residential street (approx 15 mph), the car demonstrated the exact same issue. In both cases no warning lights or messages came up, and the 'fix' was the same. Starting approximately 6/15/24 the vehicle began displaying the message "Electric Mode Temporarily Unavailable" while driving. I would experience a loss of motive power temporarily, coast for 5-10 seconds, the vehicle would switch to 'gas mode' and the combustion engine would take over. This happened between 15-20 times over the following 2 months. I was told by the dealership they couldn't do anything about it unless I had video or picture proof of the issue. I obtained both and was told the dealership would no longer take my vehicle in for repairs, only scheduled maintenance. The videos I have are over the size limit however I will include a pic of the dashboard when it happens. I have multiple videos and pictures as well if needed.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
- VIN: 1C4RJKAG7P8
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: For the second time since the vehicle was purchased EPS failed. The first time there were other issues and errors. The car cannot safely be driven under these conditions. When taken to the dealer they say they cannot recreate the issue and then it is drivable. Our concern is that these issues are not being properly logged and there is a serious electrical defect in the car that could result in a failure while it is being driven. Since there is "no trouble found" it does not need to be logged by the dealer and information will never reach the OEM to note an issue and drive recalls or corrective quality actions.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-14
- VIN: 1C4RJYE62P8
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was on my driveway getting ready to park and the parking brake engaged by itself. I came out of the car because I thought I had a flat but once I got back in the car, I saw the brake line was on. I called a friend with the same car and told him what happened. He told me to step on the brake and release the parking brake. I asked him where it was because I've never used it before. I did as he says and released the parking brake. - Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: No warning lights have come on. Two different dealerships have worked on this car 10 different times over the course of a year. In November, 2023 I sent a certified letter to jeep with my concerns and I also contacted Chrysler board of arbitration by phone (# given to me by Ohio Attorney Generals office) on 12/1/23, 12/4/23, 12/5/23 and left messages each time. I never received a call back about my messages so I got an attorney in December 2023 for the rattling noise my car has made almost the entire time ive had it. -Bought in May, 2023 -Heard the noise and put it in the shop for a pre-vacation inspection to fix what was going on before me, my 2 small kids, and my husband drove to Florida. Seemed weird to have such a new car in the shop already with noise safety concerns. -Been back and forth to dealerships more times than I should have to...a couple times theyve had my car for 3 weeks at a time. Everytime I have to unload/load carseats when i drop off and then unload/load back up when i get my car only to find it hasnt been fixed. -My attorney acts like he is at the complete mercy of the manufacturer for a resolution and this lemon case has gone on for 9 months now. -i need a safe, reliable car and for this process to be resolved in a more timely matter. I am currently at a Jeep dealership now becasue again, I will be traveling this weekend with my kids in the car even though I am uneasy about doing so but I cant stop living but it seems unfair and like no one cares that we are driving around in a car that no one can fix or that I paid a lot of money for a reallllly noisey car that I have to take back and forth to the shop a million times and worry and stress about if it going to cause a crash while im driving down the highway.

I was initially hesitant to test drive a Jeep due to my family's experience with some rough mid-2000s models. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the exceptional quality of the vehicle and the respectable offer I received. In my opinion, it outperformed the Subaru Forester (Touring Trim) and Honda Pilot (EX-L) during my test drives. I have been thoroughly impressed with the smooth and quiet ride of my '23 Jeep GC, which has a luxurious feel with the Overland trim. The ventilated, heated, and massage front seats, heads up display, and passenger screen are just a few of the features that remind me of my 2017 BMW 530i with all the bells and whistles. Despite driving moderately hard on about 60% highway, my Jeep has maintained an impressive 21.5 MPG, which would undoubtedly be even higher if it weren't for insane bumper-to-bumper rush hour traffic. Stellantis has worked wonders with Ram trucks, and it seems they have the magic touch with the Jeep Grand Cherokee as well.

I've only had it for two weeks and it's still in the break-in period, but the wheels are still on, the seats still adjust, and it starts when you want it to - sounds like a winner!

Since October 2023, my Summit Reserve has been a reliable companion for our family of three. Over the past four months, covering nearly 8,000 miles, this regular model (as opposed to the larger 'L' variant) has consistently delivered on its promise of luxury and performance. Chosen for its 4-wheel drive capability, essential for our weekly ski trips, the Summit Reserve has excelled in handling mountainous terrains and challenging conditions, reinforcing our decision with its performance and reliability. On a notable 2,500-mile road trip, the vehicle's comfort was outstanding. Its spacious and well-designed interior made the long journey surprisingly pleasant, highlighting the SUV's capability for extended travel. The level of luxury and attention to detail in this Detroit-made SUV is impressive. However, there were some surprising omissions. The vehicle did not come with mudguards installed, a necessity for our mountain trips, requiring an additional personal investment. Furthermore, the absence of all-weather mats was an unexpected additional expense. The Summit Reserve is an excellent fit for our family. Its size is perfect for our needs, providing enough space without being overly bulky, making it practical for both urban and outdoor use. While I am optimistic about the vehicle's performance, its long-term reliability is yet to be proven. To safeguard against potential issues, I opted for the 8-year, 125,000-mile Mopar warranty. Another ski team parent who drives an older 2014 Grand Cherokee suggested that the extended warranty might not be necessary, but peace of mind was a priority for me. The Summit Reserve has proven to be an excellent choice, striking a fine balance between luxury, comfort, and ruggedness. Suitable for families who love adventure without sacrificing style and comfort. While there were some minor setbacks regarding accessories and long-term reliability concerns, overall, the experience was overwhelmingly positive.

I can tell you're really enjoying your Jeep GC Limited 4x4! The 3d cameras, rear view mirror camera, cell phone charger pad, passenger screen, 10.1 center screen and rear seat monitors sound like great features. It's even better that you've taken care of all the recalls and had side steps installed. It must feel amazing to drive such a fantastic car, especially since it's paid off and you don't have to worry about car payments!

The electronics in the car can be a bit overwhelming, especially for those who are not as familiar with technology. However, I'm glad it's my wife's car and I don't have to drive it. The mileage could be better, and the steering controls are a bit complicated. It seems like they were designed with a younger generation in mind.

Jeep has demonstrated solid reliability on the engine and drivetrain in the first 16 months, with surprisingly good gas mileage. However, during the same period, the dealer had to replace both batteries, both rear struts, both front sway bars, repair the radiator air deflector, and recently one of the backseat headrests. Despite these issues, Jeep products have a reputation for quality, making these problems all the more disappointing.

I owned a Trailhawk for a while, but it wasn't really for me. Unfortunately, I experienced three issues within the first three months of ownership. Firstly, the info center went green and shut off. Secondly, the truck did a weird shift and almost cut off, which was quite concerning. Lastly, the suspension is rattling like it's loose. On the plus side, the interior is nice, but it's not anything special. Personally, I prefer luxury vehicles, which is what I went back to. I think the Trailhawk is better suited as a weekend vehicle. Also, the gas mileage isn't very good, but it's okay for short drives.

I have owned three Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. vehicles, including the 2023 JEEP Grand Cherokee 4 x 4 Limited with 12,000 km. Despite experiencing some issues with the battery and various gadgets, I am confident in the quality of Jeep vehicles. When faced with a dead battery after leaving the car in a hotel parking lot for 8 nights, I contacted Chrysler Road Assistance for help. Although their initial attempts to boost the battery were unsuccessful, they were able to arrange for a tow to Woodstock the next day. While at Woodstock Chrysler, they charged the battery and diagnosed the issue with the various gadgets. Although it was not the response I was hoping for, I appreciate their efforts to find a solution. After experiencing some additional issues with the car, Ingersoll Chrysler was able to promptly diagnose and fix the problems. I am grateful for their excellent service and confident that my Jeep Grand Cherokee will continue to perform well.

I recently rented a nearly new Cherokee Laredo for a 2-day trip from Cleveland to Sarasota. During the trip, I had to drive for two 10+ hour days, mostly on the super slab, but some town driving too. Here's what I think: First and foremost, the brakes were a bit weird. After 22 hours of driving, I still couldn't master them. They were way too touchy and inconsistent. A light touch on the pedal gave nearly nothing, but a slight increase in pressure caused near panic braking. Lifting didn't help, and modulating them was difficult. They just seemed to have a mind of their own. If this is Jeep's version of smart braking, it's very crude technology. However, the steering was light and quick. It was almost too quick for an SUV, but I adjusted to it. The fuel mileage was good, with an average of 26 mpg over my 1200 mile trip. The cabin noise was low, and the body had no squeaks or rattles. The suspension was very good, handling rough roads better than other SUVs I've driven. The visibility was good, but the rearview mirror seemed a bit small. There was a lot of plastic in the cabin, and the seats looked a bit cheap. However, the driver's seat was very comfortable for highway driving (I'm 6 ft, 210 lbs). The distance from the steering wheel to the pedals was, as usual, a bit short. A telescoping wheel would have helped. The cruise control buttons were terrible, having no tactile feel or easy use. I had to look down at the buttons to use the CC. I suggest changing them to a stalk so eyes can stay on the road. Overall, I would give it 3 stars. It would have been a strong 4-star rating if not for the braking behavior and jumpy transmission.
