2012 Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.
Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

- VIN: 1C4RJFBT6CC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: So I just bought this car from a dealer about a year now and I was driving down the fwy. Heading to work And suddenly my car turned off and my steering wheel got really hard to make any turns there was no way I could’ve stopped in the middle of the fwy. To stop and start the engine. luckily I was able to pull over and check the car I was full on gas and I looked up common issues that could turn off a running engine checked all fuses didn’t see any problems with it didn’t see any sort of corrosion in the battery cables and their was no check engine on the dash board. Theirs also been times were it randomly takes a long time cranking and won’t start right away so I literally wait for the engine to sit for a while and start the car. My guess it’s the crankshaft position or the fuel pump going out but that’s why I’m here to find out if theirs any recalls related to this issue. I’ve been told their was a recall for a relay issue

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-21
- VIN: 1C4RJFCG5CC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland headlamp assembly are defective and need to safety recall. The defect poses significant risk to driver especially at night. For example, this overland no longer level the headlamp low beam at the correct level. The light only cast out about 10 feet ahead of the headlamp. Even when engaging the high beam both headlights only show a few feet further. This is unsafe and risky when driving at night as well as on roads without any streetlights. It is like driving into darkness. The low beams headlights are pointing so low to the ground that they do not illuminate the license plate of another vehicle that is 10 feet in front. Prior to failure defect there was an in-dash notice stating the computer module lost communication with the right headlamp assembly. About a month later another message displayed the computer module lost communication with the left headlamp assembly. I took vehicle to local Jeep dealer for analysis, and they confirmed that Jeep headlight assemblies would have to be replaced with an estimated cost of about $3000.00. I told dealer this defect is a safety risk, and it needs to be a safety recall. I have to limit significantly my night driving due to safety risk. I am asking the NHTSA and Jeep Manufacture to issue recall to fix, correct, and replace this safety defect. Thanks for your prompt attention to this safety matter. Respectfully, Owner, Grand Cherokee Overland
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-17
- VIN: 1C4RJFAG9CC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Re: AQ14-003-FCA-Consent-Order-7-24-2015 & 2019 Safety Recall [Manufacturer Recall Number V62 & NHTSA Recall Number 19V-813]. FCA hasn't been in compliance with either of them regarding 'my' vehicle. 2015 Consent Decree implies should have been notifying car owners of any type of recall. 2017 recall was cancelled & 2019 safety recall was issued 4 years after the decree, 1 year after I bought the car, a safety recall was issued. Wasn't notified. 2 years later "I" contacted FCA (now Stellantis) to get my vehicle remedied by repair or replacement. Parts were shipped to a dealership but they used it on one of their customers. I asked for another set of parts. After that, absolutely nothing has happened up to now. Keep in mind FCA had my information (email, phone & address) either from me emailing or speaking with a customer rep. It's been over 3 years since last heard from FCA. On my side I no longer have ability to contact them directly since they became Stellantis. 49 U.S.C. § 30166(f); 49 C.F.R. §§ 573.6(c)(10); 577.5(a), 577.7(c)(1), & 49 U.S.C. § 30165(a)(1); 49 C.F.R. § 578.6(a) NHTSA fined FCA/Stellantis > $100 million for 'not' making an effort to send recall notifications of any type of recalls directly to owners of their vehicles within a reasonable amount of time also to remedy the issue. If they don't comply $7,000 per violation & only remedy is replacing the vehicle in question. It's exact issue! Been over 7 years waiting within a reasonable remedy, it never happened. This is a safety issue. I was assured it'd be fixed, never was. I'm putting my life at risk & others driving. Unbelievably the part sent to me the dealership without my consent & knowledge gave it to one of their customers. I called to complain & expected another part to be sent out to another dealership. It never happened. I never spoke to anyone at FCA since then 3 years ago. There doesn't need to be a lengthy investigation. It shows my recall status as open. Proof of noncompliance.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-15
- VIN: 1C4RJFCG5CC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The entire vehicle turns off while driving down the road at 50mph. I am uncertain what part failed and have reproduced the issue on many occasions. This issue is a danger to not only my life but of those around me the vehicle shuts off unable to steer and unable to brake while still traveling at high speeds. This loss of control will result in the loss of limb or life if it hasn't already. Given the issue has existed for over 12 years now this needs to be investigated as the cause is completely unknown. When the issue accures it is without indication or warning it happens abruptly and seemingly without cause.

Gotten out of shop a few days later same issue . Had extended warranty , was stuck paying deductible twice even though it was in the shop for same thing . Deductible $200 twice I had to pay . Come to find out the engine had gone bad , they replaced that if I’m not mistaken . Vehicle was in shop almost a month after we had gotten no results from the original dealership service center where we purchased the vehicle. They did not have the proper tools to repair the vehicle, ended up taking the vehicle to a dodge dealership locally . After driving the car a couple months later it started smoking and jerking again would stop and would not crank . Was taken to the dealership again , told this time it was the transmission and extended warranty would not cover it . We were sold a LEMON. Dealership knew exactly what was wrong with this they wanted to get it off their hands . This is something they know from from the start , unsafe to drive keeps smoking . We need answers fast someone is liable for the damage car they sold my son and I.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-04
- VIN: 1C4RJFAT1CC
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: This Jeep has had 2 recalls and repairs related to the fuel pump relay. The first recallrepair did not fix the issue, Jeep then replaced the relay again, which did not fix the issue. Then there was a NEW recall and repair, which also did not fix the issue. The car still has the exact same issues, the car will randomly stall soon after being started. I’m not sure what to do at this point bc I feel unsafe driving this car and it is my only vehicle.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-02
- VIN: 1C4RJFCT0CC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving through the intersection after slowing down at light, vehicle completely stalled, turned off in the middle of the intersection and wouldn't start back up. I had to have it towed to dealership. I have had it in dealer prior to this incident for stalling issues just out of nowhere. They simply said they cannot find a cause. This is dangerous to me because vehicles behind me don't know that I am stalled out and almost hit me. Prior to this last time, I have been able to restart vehicle by putting in neutral and getting it to move on it's way, but still scary while vehicles behind me don't know that I was going to stall out. This last incident, I had to be pushed off of the road and then towed to dealer. Hoping they can find the cause and fix.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-27
- VIN: 1C4RJEAG6CC
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The transmission shifts strangely, and it seems like it cannot decide which gear it needs to be in for normal operations. It also causes the vehicle to stall while driving. Also, at times it stays in only one gear, and you cannot even shift gears manually. Intermittently, the vehicle starts out in a higher gear, and it doesn’t correct itself, so acceleration is way below what it needs to be. I have been fortunate to avoid a few crashes due to the stalling.

You've owned many vehicles in your lifetime (perhaps too many, according to your wife!), but it sounds like this one is your favorite. It's great to hear that you haven't had a single problem with it after 16,000 miles. Your high on the highway is over 25 mpg and you get around 20 in the city, which is impressive. Even when you run ethanol in it to be a little green, the car is still unbelievably comfortable and rides like a dream. You mentioned taking it on a 16-hour trip this summer and feeling great when you arrived - that's fantastic! It's also great to hear that the car is very quiet, has a great entertainment system, and looks fabulous inside and out. It's no surprise that you receive so many compliments on it. Overall, it sounds like there's not much to dislike about this car!

My husband bought this car earlier this year and we are thrilled with the updated design of the Grand Cherokee. It's comfortable, runs smoothly, and is a great family car. The overall value is fantastic compared to other luxury cars.

Hi there! I noticed that you're interested in selling your car to your son and buying another one. I hope you don't mind me asking, but why did your wife stop driving her Saab? Let me know if you need any help with the process!

Eleven years and 200,000 plus miles, and I still love my Grand Jeep Cherokee SUV! I have followed their recommended maintenance intervals and the car runs like a champ. This vehicle remains just as dependable and durable as the day I drove it off the lot.

I recently purchased a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited in Black with the Frost Beige Leather interior and I am absolutely in love with it! I had to wait for the 2012 model since the dealer did not have any 2011s available in Black with the Rear DVD option, which was important to me as I have two kids. However, the wait was definitely worth it! Although I miss the extra power of the V8 in my old 2001 JGC, the V6 on the Limited is more than adequate for my needs as I do not tow anything. Additionally, the car rides incredibly smoothly and I am getting much better mileage (23-24 HWY).

The power steering, air conditioning, transmission, and engine all cool from the radiator, which unfortunately is prone to failure resulting in numerous problematic and ongoing oil and fluid leaking issues. These issues can cost thousands to replace or repair. Jeep has consistently been rated as one of the lowest in the industry for reliability and customer satisfaction. However, it's important to note that every vehicle has its own unique set of issues. If you're interested, I have a 2012 Grand Cherokee available for a great price. As with any vehicle, it's important to do your research and make an informed decision. Thank you for considering this information.

Although the Limited V8 was not available, I am still satisfied with my package. I was tempted to give this car 4 stars, but I've had one too many negative experiences to do so. However, it is still my daily driver in 2020 with 100k miles. On the positive side, the car has an attractive and timeless design both inside and out, with 20

Jeeps are no longer the American staple vehicle. They are poorly and cheaply made, overpriced, and do not hold their value. However, there are many other great options available in the market that you may want to consider. I would be happy to help you explore some of these alternatives.

In terms of reliability, I would not recommend it. However, it is a stunning truck with an amazing look and sound. It is fast and a real badass vehicle. Unfortunately, it can be quite expensive to fix. I had a Jeep SRT that constantly overheated and after spending over $10,000 in repairs, I had to say goodbye. If you are considering getting a Jeep SRT, I would suggest getting a brand new one. You never know what these cars have been through.

It sounds like you've had a lot of trouble with your vehicle. From the catalytic converter to the AC hose, tire pressure sensors, windshield washers, and water pump, it seems like there have been a lot of issues. Some of these problems are minor but can add up in cost, while others are more serious and can leave you without transportation for weeks. It's frustrating when your vehicle is in the shop and you can't use it. The final straw was when your transfer case got stuck in 4-wheel low and became inoperable, which required a $500 repair after towing it to the mechanic. It's understandable that you wouldn't want to own another Jeep after all of this.
