2024 Jeep Grand cherokee problems
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a range of mid-size SUVs produced by the American manufacturer Jeep. At its introduction, while most SUVs were still manufactured with body-on-frame construction, the Grand Cherokee has used a unibody chassis from the start.
Development
The Grand Cherokee's origins date back to 1983 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) was designing a successor to the Jeep Cherokee. Three outside (non-AMC) designers—Larry Shinoda, Alain Clenet, and Giorgetto Giugiaro—were also under contract with AMC to create and build a clay model of the Cherokee XJ replacement, then known as the "XJC" project. However, the basic design for the Cherokee's replacement was well under way by AMC's in-house designers and the 1989 Jeep Concept 1 show car foretold the basic design.
As AMC began the development of the next Jeep in 1985, management created a business process that is now known as product lifecycle management (PLM). According to François Castaing, Vice President for Product Engineering and Development, the smallest U.S. automaker was looking for a way to speed up its product development process to compete better against its larger competitors. The XJC's development was aided by computer-aided design (CAD) software systems making the engineers more productive. Meanwhile, new communication systems allowed potential conflicts to be resolved faster, thus reducing costly engineering changes, because all drawings and documents were in a central database. The system was so effective that after Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, it expanded the system throughout its enterprise, thus connecting everyone involved in designing and building products.
The Grand Cherokee thus became the first Chrysler-badged Jeep product. Development work for the new Jeep model continued and Chrysler's employees (after the 1987 buyout of AMC) were eager for a late-1980s release date; however, CEO Lee Iacocca was pushing for redesigned Chrysler minivans, thus delaying the Grand Cherokee's release until late 1992 as an Explorer competitor. Unlike the Explorer, the Grand Cherokee utilized monocoque (unibody) construction, whereas the Explorer was a derivative of the Ranger pickup with a separate body-on-frame. A Dodge-branded version was designed as a precaution should Jeep dealers struggle to handle so many Grand Cherokee units.
The Grand Cherokee debuted in grand fashion at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. The vehicle that was driven was a Poppy Red Clear Coat 1993 Grand Cherokee ZJ Laredo with a quartz cloth interior and high-back bucket seats. Then Chrysler president Robert Lutz drove Detroit mayor, Coleman Young, from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant on North Jefferson Avenue via a police escort to Cobo Hall, up the steps of Cobo Hall and through a plate glass window to show off the new vehicle. Sales of the 1993 model year Grand Cherokee began in April 1992.
Production of the Grand Cherokee started shortly afterward in the purpose-built Jefferson North Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. European Grand Cherokees are manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr. The Grand Cherokee "played a significant part in reviving Chrysler's fortunes by moving it into the then-nascent market for high-margin sports utility vehicles."
Upon its introduction, it was the first full-scale manufacture of an automobile in the US using HFC-134a refrigerant in place of HCFC-12 for the HVAC system.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
- VIN: 1C4RJYE66R8
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: My Jeep start making a horrible grinding and clicking noise every time I turn the steering wheel. It sounded like the wheels would about to come off. It would shake violently going to the road. The A/C was not cooling. It felt super hot inside at all times. The passenger dash was making a rattle at all times. The transmission was jumping at low speeds. The hybrid electrical system wasn't charging. I called the dealership and they said these things were not normal for a brand new Jeep especially the top Summit Reserve. After inspection, I had two broken axles. Metal pieces in my A/C. The passenger instrument panel needed to replaced. The electrical system needed to replaced. The transmission fluid needed to be drained and recalibrated. The transmission continues to jump and jolt forward. The suspension is very shaky and rocky. The steering column and driver door still has a rattle.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-11
- VIN: 1C4RJYE66R8
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: On the night of [XXX], I was driving on [XXX] with my husband. I lost the ability to steer, accelerate, shift and brake the car. I was able to blast the horn or I would’ve caused a multi-car accident. Unconnect was static and jumping screens. The headlight and taillights wouldn’t stop flashing. The shifter froze up. The car showed multiple error messages, “Service Transmission Continue in D. Don’t Shift Or Turn Off Vehicle Until You Reach A Desired Location. As You May Not Be Able To Shift Again.” “Service Electronic Stability Control” “Auto Park Disabled” “Vehicle Not in Park” “Drowsy Driver Disabled” Every feature on the car disabled. I got the Jeep pulled over before I lost complete electrical, engine and battery power. Jeep Roadside Assistance would not come get us. USAA Insurance had to make two trips since the car couldn't go in neutral and had no power. They towed it to the nearest dealership. The dealership put in a new battery but that didn't work. They ran diagnostics. The valve body is faulty and shorting out which isn't allowing the car to start. This part is on backorder and will not be available for weeks. I'm waiting a month for a new part in hopes that solves the first issue. Then we see what diagnostics says about the remaining problems. I was moments away from dying along with countless others on the busiest Interstate in Texas. Jeep brand isn’t providing safety and reliability. This is a brand new vehicle that came from the factory with faulty parts. Jeep has already settled a Class Action for this same issue on the 2021-2023 Wrangler. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
- VIN: 1C4RJKBG9R8
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I was driving at 65 mph on highway when warning screen came on ""Service Transmission Continue in D. Do not shift or turn engine off until you reach a desired location. You may not be able to shift again until serviced". Then warnings came up that each of the safety systems are disabled (lane assist, front collision, etc.). I was only a few miles from next. I slowed when exiting, car would not increase power when I tried to merge onto road, had to ride on shoulder to safe place to park. I put car in park, tried to shut it off, but it would not shut down completely. It also would not go out of park. Jeep had car towed, replaced transmission (took 4 weeks). Brand new car with only 866 miles on it. I definitely felt my life was endangered on highway with so many components failing & when car would not shut off. I'm now scared to drive it alone. Luckily I was in a populated area & close to home when this happened. (attached pics were taken when I was parked & car would not turn off)
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-24
- VIN: 1C4RJYC67R8

Intermittent issue. Check engine light activates and is on for a couple days then goes off. Error code: P02F0.
POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-21
- VIN: 1C4RJYB60RC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: Vehicle acceleration stops at high altitudes which causes the vehicle to suddenly maintain lower gear and speeds while driving on interstate/highway. Vehicle had accelerator replaced by delearship at 1,406 miles, however the issue continued. Dealership is now replacing turbocharger engine after reporting failure at 3,500 miles.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
- VIN: 1C4RJGAG3RC
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: -Steering boot popped open causing steering rack assembly to need replacement at 3,216 miles. -Power steering warning light engaged making me aware of an issue on 8/5/24. A strange cranking noise when making u turns occurred infrequently. -Car was taken to a repair shop on 8/5/24 where prior suspension, steering and wheel alignment work had been done on 6/25/24 due to fender bender. Diagnostic was performed and repair facility advised that code stated that a "power steering (computer) update was needed" and that Jeep would have to perform the necessary computer update. -Car was subsequently taken to Jeep dealership on 8/5/24 and dealership stated that a new power steering rack assembly was needed and that manufacturer warranty would be notified. Communication from dealership on 8/28/24 added that steering boot was torn and that incident was billed as additional claim to insurance incident on 6/25/24. -Vehicle component has NOT been confirmed by manufacturer and dealership is unwilling to pursue inspection of part because vehicle was involved in a fender bender on 6/25/24 at 2,410 miles. - Initial repair facility does not believe that damage to steering boot existed on 6/25/24. -Insurance representative has confirmed damage and paid additional claim, but cannot confirm if it was caused due to a defect in the part. It is my opinion that this issue may be caused by a defective part due to the timing of the issue and visual inspection of the part. I would like for NHTSA to evaluate the soundness of this power steering component due to the documented power steering component failures and recalls of the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo models manufactured 2021-2024. Due to the fact that the two repair facilities provided entirely different reasons for the power steering warning light, I would also request an investigation into the code that should appear when a power steering boot or steering rack assembly fails verses the code for a power steering "computer update".
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-20
- VIN: 1C4RJHBG5R8
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The system does not work in my 2024 Grand Cherokee. My dealer agreed to take me out for a drive and after several attempts to get the system to engage (straight on rear end, corner of a stopped vehicle, corner of an exiting vehicle) nothing! No audible, visual or brake jerk. The technician was an awesome driver because he scared the ---- out of us trying to get the system to engage. Service advisor had the tech take out another 2024 GC to perform the same test. We went with him. Same thing.....nothing. In both SUVs multiple tests at varying distance setting were performed. They tried to tell us that nothing is wrong because when diagnostics were run there were no codes, no error messages so no problem. Told them that isn't good enough. They finally agreed to open a "star" (I think) report with corporate and I will be taking my GC into the shop on September 11th through the 13th. There are many other Jeep owners stating the same thing. Effects multiple models and multiple model years. [XXX] has threads that are discussing the problem and Jeep Cares is a member of that forum. I have also seen complaints on a Jeep Compass owners site. I believe Jeep is fully aware but many owners may not be familiar with how the system works. Dealerships are telling customers that they can't fix the system because the diagnostics aren't registering a fault. I had three incidents where I was cutoff by other drivers and the system did not engage. The system is supposed to work at 3 miles per hour or greater, but it doesn't work at all. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: FCA pushed an involuntary software update to our car on August 6, 2024. It completed about 75% of the update and froze, rendering our display and systems unusable. Our back-up camera only works intermittently as does many of the ADAs safety features. We have no temperature controls or radio either. We have been to the dealer multiple times and they are being told by FCA that the entire unit needs to be replaced. A search of social media (reddit) shows that others may be having the same safety issue. The dealer says they have had four more incidents come into their shop.

Fearful we could cause an accident by unknowingly driving too fast or too slow. The speedometer display indicates we are going 40+ mph while we are sitting absolutely still at stop lights & that we are traveling at a variety of speeds including 0 mph while keeping up with traffic on the interstate. Tachometer does not function. The rpm gauge fluctuates wildly while idling and while the vehicle is in motion. Gear Display does not function. The red alert on the instrument panel is constantly lit up indicating that the airbags will not function in the case of an accident. Engine gear display does not function. Display will randomly indicate vehicle is in reverse while we are very clearly driving forward. We have no way of knowing if the vehicle will suddenly change gears a result. Engine randomly turns off while in motion. The engine began randomly turning off while we were driving even after we picked it up from the dealership following the first attempt at repairs. There is absolutely no warning when it happens. We have no way of knowing when, where or at what speed the vehicle will be moving when the engine shuts off. This affects all steering, braking and electrical warning functions. Transmission overheating. Gives multiple alerts indicating that the transmission was running at too high a temperature and needed immediate service by the dealer. We have no way of knowing if the transmission will catch on fire. New Vehicle purchased 5/2. Malfunctioned immediately +returned for service 5/8. NO repair has been successful. Vehicle cannot be driven safely

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-04
- VIN: 1C4RJYB62RC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: 1) Car shuts off automatically when driving. The only option to start engine again is to shut off the engine and restart. 2) Car hesitate when gas engine is communicating with electric battery. Car acts like it is is neutral for about 5 seconds The both issues listed above creates a serious safety risk as there is no option to accelerate while driving on a highway or city street. It creates a safety risk for my family and drivers that are behind me since other drivers have to come to an abrupt stop. The engine turned off while I was driving my daughters to school and we came within inches of being hit by a tractor trailer. That is why I am writing this message. This is a serious safety risk and I do not trust this vehicle. I took the car back to the dealership and I was told that the issue is a characteristics of a hybrid. They were not able to replicate the issue but they are aware of the issue since others customers had the same complaint. The engine shut off and engine stall happened 3 more times after this visit so I am now going back to see what options I have to get out of this lease. The episodes happened so fast that I do not recall if a warning light came on. It is a very scary moment when you have your family in the car and the engine shuts off for no reason. Fortunately there has been no accident YET but as mentioned I am going to try my best to get out of this lease.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying the way it handles! It's great to have a car that can turn so easily. I understand that it can take some time to get used to new features like lane assist and a bigger touch screen, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it in no time.

I recently decided to upgrade my car and was considering a new Volvo XC90 or going back to Land Rover. However, I stumbled upon the GC Summit Reserve after reading an online review and decided to take it for a test drive. I was pleasantly surprised by three things: the exceptional ride height, the unexpected interior, and the safety features. Ultimately, I purchased the Summit Reserve and have been extremely satisfied with my decision. It's incredibly comfortable, and the Tulepo tan leather is soft and luxurious. While the price could have included a longer warranty like its competitors, and the dealership facilities could be improved to meet customer expectations, these are not deal-breakers. I have not experienced any issues with my new American luxury SUV and am excited to drive it every day.

Beautiful SUV with comfy seats and a great ride. Although, it was a bit frustrating to figure out which features came with each trim level. However, I had a great experience at the dealership.

I can tell you're really enjoying your Jeep GC Limited 4x4! The 3d cameras, rear view mirror camera, cell phone charger pad, passenger screen, 10.1 center screen and rear seat monitors sound like great features. It's even better that you've taken care of all the recalls and had side steps installed. It must feel amazing to drive such a fantastic car, especially since it's paid off and you don't have to worry about car payments!

It has a smooth and quiet ride.

Jeep has demonstrated solid reliability on the engine and drivetrain in the first 16 months, with surprisingly good gas mileage. However, during the same period, the dealer had to replace both batteries, both rear struts, both front sway bars, repair the radiator air deflector, and recently one of the backseat headrests. Despite these issues, Jeep products have a reputation for quality, making these problems all the more disappointing.

I recently rented a nearly new Cherokee Laredo for a 2-day trip from Cleveland to Sarasota. During the trip, I had to drive for two 10+ hour days, mostly on the super slab, but some town driving too. Here's what I think: First and foremost, the brakes were a bit weird. After 22 hours of driving, I still couldn't master them. They were way too touchy and inconsistent. A light touch on the pedal gave nearly nothing, but a slight increase in pressure caused near panic braking. Lifting didn't help, and modulating them was difficult. They just seemed to have a mind of their own. If this is Jeep's version of smart braking, it's very crude technology. However, the steering was light and quick. It was almost too quick for an SUV, but I adjusted to it. The fuel mileage was good, with an average of 26 mpg over my 1200 mile trip. The cabin noise was low, and the body had no squeaks or rattles. The suspension was very good, handling rough roads better than other SUVs I've driven. The visibility was good, but the rearview mirror seemed a bit small. There was a lot of plastic in the cabin, and the seats looked a bit cheap. However, the driver's seat was very comfortable for highway driving (I'm 6 ft, 210 lbs). The distance from the steering wheel to the pedals was, as usual, a bit short. A telescoping wheel would have helped. The cruise control buttons were terrible, having no tactile feel or easy use. I had to look down at the buttons to use the CC. I suggest changing them to a stalk so eyes can stay on the road. Overall, I would give it 3 stars. It would have been a strong 4-star rating if not for the braking behavior and jumpy transmission.

I owned a Trailhawk for a while, but it wasn't really for me. Unfortunately, I experienced three issues within the first three months of ownership. Firstly, the info center went green and shut off. Secondly, the truck did a weird shift and almost cut off, which was quite concerning. Lastly, the suspension is rattling like it's loose. On the plus side, the interior is nice, but it's not anything special. Personally, I prefer luxury vehicles, which is what I went back to. I think the Trailhawk is better suited as a weekend vehicle. Also, the gas mileage is not very good, but it may be okay for short drives.
