The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Honda Accord

What is the common problem of the Honda Accord?

One of the Honda Accord's most talked-about issues revolves around its transmission. Owners have reported cases of slipping, abrupt shifting, and, in some unfortunate instances, complete failure.

What years to avoid on a Honda Accord?

Quick Answer: Avoid 1998-2005, 2008-2010, 2013, and 2014 Honda Accords. The turn of the century was not an easy time for Honda. The transmission in the new sixth-generation Accord had issues slipping or making thuds while shifting and often outright failing, while several engines stalled out while driving.

Is Honda Accord a reliable car?

Honda has a long-standing reputation for producing durable and dependable vehicles, and the Accord is no exception. Many owners report driving their Accords well beyond the 100,000-mile mark with minimal issues. This reliability can translate into lower maintenance costs and a longer lifespan for your vehicle.

What Honda Accord years are best?

A: As per the guide, the most reliable Honda Accords are the 2006 and 2007 models from the seventh generation and the 2011 and 2012 models from the eighth generation. These specific years have garnered positive feedback for their dependability and have fewer reported issues compared to other years.

Honda Accord 2018
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-16
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
  • VIN: 1HGCV1F35JA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEAT BELTS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: During normal driving - clear weather conditions - the car will suddenly activate the forward collision braking. It will literally slam on the brakes and decrease the speed by 10-15 MPH. This happened as I was going down the drive of our neighborhood, I was at 45 MPH with no one in front of me or behind me (thankfully) and the car applied the brakes and activated the front collision warning. There is also an intermittent issue with my seatbelt. Specifically the drivers seat belt. I was witness to someone driving my car - he buckled his seat belt and it unlatched. He then buckled it again thinking he didn’t do it right - but it wouldn’t latch. This has happened to me before as well - but usually after the third try of buckling the seat belt it will work and so I thought nothing of it. Additionally, the windshield wipers do not go back to their original position after being in use.

  • Summary: the fuel pump on my 2013 honda accord went out. Ive taken the vehicle to the honda dealer multiple times to get it diagnosed and they keep telling me its the high pressure fuel pump and once replaced my car will run smoothly.NOT the case ive replaced it more than 6 times, my car still stalls and turns off at random so im unable to drive the vehicle. it starts and drives but you have to look at the rpms while driving, if i go over 2000 rpms itll stall. when the issue first started i was at a redlight when the vehicle stalled, thankfully no one was around me since it was late but had there been traffic my car would have been hit. i have 2 children and I cant and will not put them in that car knowing it has a problem no one is willing to take a deep dive into. There was a time not long before that my wife and I went to store and she went in and I was gonna come in after I got done with my phone call I was on and when I tried to open the door it would not open and I had to wait for her to come out of store to unlock the car so I could get out. After this last incident I was so shaken up I didn't know what to do until my brother in law told me to file a complaint before it happens to someone else that might not get lucky like I did and to call an attorney which is what I'm gonna do regardless of what they do about it. I'm a grown adult and could not get out of that car and if that were to happen to a child I don't wanna even think about what would happen and that is why I'm making this complaint so it can be fixed before it happens again if it already hasn't.

    Vehicle year: 2000

The transmission in this car is not up to par with Honda's reliability standards, particularly with this year's model range. Although I purchased the car two years ago, I experienced the common issue of first gear shifting hard when going to second, which eventually led to the car being stuck in fourth gear. Despite the $1500 cost to fix it, the repairman warned me that the same issue may arise again due to an inherent defect in the design. Therefore, I would not recommend purchasing this car.

Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with our 2012 SE automatic car. While it runs and drives great at most speeds, we have noticed a bit of a shimmy between 60-70mph and above, which can be a bit frustrating during interstate cruising. We took it to the dealer at 3500 miles to address the issue, but unfortunately, the shimmy persisted. However, we are remaining hopeful that it can be fixed. Before making a purchase, I would recommend checking out some of the online forums where other '11 and '12 model year owners have shared their experiences with Honda and the shimmy issue. Despite this issue, the car is still fun to drive. Thank you for your time!

    Vehicle year: 2012

I have been a loyal Honda customer since 1985, but unfortunately, my experience with the 2012 model has not been great. In comparison to my previous Honda vehicles, I have found that the 2012 model has some issues. For example, there is a common occurrence of hesitation while driving. Although I took it back to the dealership, they were unable to find anything wrong with the car. Additionally, I have found the seats to be quite uncomfortable and the road noise to be very distracting when driving on the highway. Despite these issues, the gas mileage is very good. However, I am considering not keeping this Honda for as long as I have kept my previous ones.

The car is great! It has all the features I need, more than adequate power, and great mpg. If Honda could figure out how to make it a little quieter, it would be perfect. Unfortunately, the front passenger seat is way too low and can't be adjusted higher. Maybe better tires would help with the noise. The OEM Hankook tires are just horrible.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Honda! It sounds like you made a practical choice with the V6 coupe, and it's great to hear that it's been reliable for you. The seat warmers, memory setting, Bluetooth, and sound system all sound like great features. It's understandable that you wish the warranty was better, but it's good to hear that you haven't had any issues so far. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

You can always count on this vehicle to get you where you need to go. It has only broken down once, and that was because I didn't follow through promptly on a warning light. Overall, it's been incredibly reliable.

  3. Reece Ondricka 2025-05-15

    Vehicle year: 1998

I bought this car used in 1999 when it was only a year old and had 60,000 miles on it. Since then, I have put 378,500 miles on it (as of June 2023) and I can confidently say that this is the best car I have ever owned. I have always made sure to keep up with routine maintenance and inspections, following the manufacturer's recommendations. I have found that using a privately owned garage dedicated to Honda maintenance has been a great choice for me. The owner is an excellent mechanic who takes pride in his work, uses Honda parts, and charges a fair price. I have never been disappointed with the service I have received. Despite the high mileage, I have never had any transmission or clutch problems and I get about 30 mpg on the road and about 27-28 around town. Although the paint has been peeling for quite some time and there is some rust in front of both the rear wheel wells, I don't mind. The driver's seat is still in excellent condition and fits me perfectly. The interior has not torn or worn out, which is unbelievable! The tape deck, an aftermarket add-on, quit a long time ago, but that doesn't bother me. My goal is to reach 500,000 miles, but given my age and annual miles driven, I know that I won't make it. Nonetheless, I am grateful to Honda and American workers for producing such an excellent product!

    Vehicle year: 2005

I have been the proud owner of a V6 coupe EX with HFP package for over 4 years and have driven it for just over 60k miles. I am happy to say that I love my car more and more every day. It has never let me down and requires minimal maintenance. The engine is a powerhouse and always wants to go faster. Even at 70mph on the freeway, it feels like a breeze. I have pushed it to its limits and driven it at 130mph, and it felt like it was on rails. The acceleration is surprisingly good, and the auto transmission shifts are fast and responsive. The braking is excellent, especially with good pads and rotors. Despite being a heavy coupe, it stops on a dime. The steering is tight and nimble, making it easy to handle even at 100mph. The 17Last year when you moved, you drove your car 3200 miles across the country in just 8 days and it delivered 100%! It was an absolute blast to drive. Although it's a big car at over 15 1/2 feet, which you personally love, some people may find it difficult to park in tight spaces. The back seats are not too bad, but getting in the back is not easy unless you're small or a child. The only other downside is that fuel economy does vary depending on how and where you drive. You've had tanks last as low as 17mpg and as high as 33mpg, but your average is about 23mpg which is still pretty good. You never thought you would keep the car longer than 2 years, but now you're driving it as long as it wants to keep going. This car owes you nothing at this point as it's done everything you have asked and more. If you're considering a 7th generation Accord Coupe, do yourself a favor and get a well-optioned V6 and try to find one with the HFP package!

  5. Dagmar Ullrich 2025-05-14

    Vehicle year: 2017

I've owned 11 cars before my SE, including 6 European models, but I can confidently say that the Accord Sport is the best choice I've made so far. I purchased it in August 2017 and have driven 3000 miles without a single issue. The car has a firm, responsive, and tight-tuned feel that I love, and it comes at a very reasonable price. The interior is beautiful, with comfortable seats and high-quality leather that creates a luxurious ambiance. Many people think that the Sport or Sport SE are just polished LX models, but that's not true. The Sport SE has many upgrades, including bigger rotors, a sharper steering ratio, a direct flow exhaust, a black headliner, leather heated seats, attractive aluminum pedals, and a 60:40 rear seat. All of these upgrades make this car truly special without breaking the bank. The car is rock solid and drives great, with responsive handling that's perfect for a family sedan. I'm writing this after a major snowstorm and ice rain, and the car has maintained its strong handling character. This is my first Honda, and I'm impressed with the VTEC engine, which is a great example of engineering, and the CVT transmission, which is much better than competitors, smooth and responsive if you use the Sport mode. I highly recommend this car to daily drivers who don't want to invest in overpriced crossovers. Update: After driving 30 months and 20k miles, I've only had to do oil changes at the dealer, and the car still looks and drives like new, averaging 30 mpg in mixed driving. I love my Accord!
