The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
  • VIN: JHMCG6698YC
  • Components: AIR BAGS

I find it hard that cars not quite as old have been recalled but these have not. My son still owns his 1999 Honda civic, too! Thank you for your time and dedication to safety.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-20
  • VIN: 1HGCG1651YA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: On this vehicle, it is common knowledge that the V6 models have an issue related to the transmission (referred to as the automatic transaxle by Honda) where the system was not reworked to account for the extra torque put out by the more powerful V6 engine causing it to strip and shred portions of the gearing causing gear slippage, rough idling, and other similar issues usually occuring sometimes around or after the 80k mile mark. Upon finding out about this, I did some research and Honda's "solution" offered was that transmissions could be swapped for rebuilt ones salvaged off of other vehicles brought in for similar issues but there have also been reports of these rebuilt transmissions beginning to fail after they reach an additional 80k miles proving the issue was not truly resolved. On top of this, a formal recall was never made, owners were not made aware of this, and the offer was only made available to those who brought their vehicles in for this issues within a certain number of years and certain of mileage after their purchase which is very unsafe, anti-consumer, and shows a lack of care and responsibility on their part especially since this issue affects not only V6 Accord models, but also affects Ridgeline, Odyssey, and CR-V models that use the same engine and transmission combo. It should also be noted that, due to the lack of notice or action regarding this issue on the manufacturer's part, it has never been resolved on my model as the prior owners never knew of this issue when they bought the car new but the Honda owned dealership was happy enough to quote me a $1406 repair the last time I inquired about this issue.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-11-14
  • VIN: 1HGCG2255YA
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I received a letter about the airbag recall for my 2000 Honda Accord EX back in year 2020, so I call the dealer in Sanford to make an appointment. They tell me I have to take my car in first, then they will inspect it and order the part (AutoNation Honda Sanford 407-323-6100). I arrived early, they took my car in and in about an hour later they called me that my car was ready. I was surprised on how fast the job was done. I looked at the invoice paperwork Honda gave me and left home. At my house I was looking at the invoice and it did not show anywhere where the airbag was recalled, so there was NO second appointment. I called on the same day of my appointment (Nov. 14, 2020) and speak to a rep who I explained the situation. She placed me on hold a few times and at one point I asked to speak to the person who was in charge who was Michael Donaldson (service advisor 7927). I explained to the service manager that I did not see anything about the airbag being recalled. He said after the tests they performed, my car did not need the airbag to be replaced, so they did not schedule another appointment because of that. Mr. Donaldson did tell me that Honda performed a SOFTWARE update and that would be it. I asked Mr. Donaldson "how a software update is going to fix the metal pieces inside the airbag?" His replied was "that was all the car needed". I decided not to call the same Honda dealer again, but did call Holler Honda (407) 629-1234. Unfortunately before I was able to take my car in, the transmission failed, so I had to cancel. I WILL fix the transmission and the car WILL be on the road again. I have proof of what Honda in Sanford did on the day of my appointment. I keep receiving letters and emails about the recall, so something WAS NOT done correctly, because if they send the report that my car didn't need an airbag, why do I keep getting letters and emails to call for appointment? I ALREADY MADE AN APPOINTMENT and HONDA DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-30
  • VIN: 1HGCG1659YA
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY 2000 HONDA ACCORD V6 3.0 VTEC ENGINE IS HAVING SOME ISSUES AFTER IT HEATS UP WHEN I START IT WOULD DO SOME ERRATIC RPM CHANGES ON IDLE AND THEN STALL. IF I MANAGE TO GET IT MOVING DESPITE RPM DROPS, IT RUNS GREAT AND WOULD NOT STALL AGAIN. ALSO, IF I LEAVE IT FOR A WHILE (LIKE 15 MINUTES) AND THEN COME BACK, IT USUALLY STARTS LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED I BELIEVE THIS IS A DEFECT WITH PCM AND FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR THE ISSUE HAS TO DO WITH ETHANOL HAVING A LOWER BOILING POINT THAN TRADITIONAL GAS. THIS CAUSES IT TO VAPORIZE ON THE FUEL RAIL WHEN THE CAR'S WARM, BUT NO LONG PUMPING GAS BECAUSE IT'S OFF. WHEN YOU GO TO RE-START THE CAR, INSTEAD OF LIQUID GAS, YOU ARE SPURTING ON FUMES ON THE RAIL. I HAVE NOT HAD THIS FIXED ON MY CAR YET I'VE BEEN DOING SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND SEVERAL ARTICLES ONLINE AND REFERS TO THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM I'VE HAD MY CAR SERVICE WITH A TUNE-UP OIL CHANGE AND A FUEL INDUCTION SERVICE I'VE ALSO REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR AND THE THROTTLE POSITIONING SENSOR IT IS STILL GIVING ME ISSUES I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IF THERE IS VALIDITY TO MY CLAIM.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 21 recalls for different components of the 2000 Honda Accord.

2020-01-17
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2001-2002 Acura 3.2CL, 2000-2003 Acura 3.5RL, 2000-2001 Acura 3.2TL, Honda CR-V and Honda Odyssey, 2001-2002 Acura MDX and 2000 Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Coupe, and Civic Sedan vehicles. These vehicles may have received a replacement driver frontal air bag module as part of a vehicle repair. Due to a manufacturing issue, the replacement NADI inflator may absorb moisture, causing the inflator to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the air bags in the vehicles, replacing the driver frontal air bag inflator with an inflator of a different design, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138.

These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. Negative 2000 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Tyrique Welch 2024-08-23

Unfortunately, my experience with Honda has been less than satisfactory. Despite purchasing four Honda Accords and one Civic, all of the Accords (from 1968, 1988, 1990, and 2000) have had major problems, and the Civic required frequent repairs. Even my current 2000 Accord V6 developed transmission issues within a week of purchase. Although I did not purchase the extended warranty due to financial constraints, the Honda dealership refused to help me as I had bought the car 'As Is.' As a result, I am unable to drive the car and need to save over $2000 to have the transmission rebuilt. While I understand that some people have had great experiences with Honda, my personal experience has been nothing short of a nightmare.

  2. Oran Morar 2024-08-05

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I purchased it back in 2000 when it was on sale and it has been a reliable vehicle for me. However, I have noticed that the seats are quite uncomfortable and there is a fair amount of wind noise. Additionally, when driving uphill, I have noticed that there is a lack of power. Overall, I have had a positive experience with my car and I hope this information is helpful to you.

  3. Pierce Hahn 2024-05-12

I knew that the 2000 Accord had a history of transmission problems, but since my car had made it to 108,000 miles, I felt it would make it to 200,000. I loved this car! However, last week the transmission did go out. Despite this, I would still recommend this car since most of them do fine. Fortunately, I still got a good trade-in and got a new 2009 Civic, which I love just as much.

  4. Norwood Barton 2024-04-24

At 86,000 miles, the transmission went on my 4-cylinder. What a major disappointment! I could have gotten it fixed, but it seemed like too much money to put into a ten-year-old car. I was really sad and mad to see that Honda Accords have documented transmission problems. It was fun and reliable until then. I'm too mad at Honda to buy another one, so I went with the Nissan Altima this time, and I'm loving it!

  5. Merritt Nienow 2024-04-23

I purchased this car from a private seller after owning a '98 model. Although I should have sold it and had a car payment, I decided to keep it. Over time, I have had to change numerous brakes, rotors, calipers, and rear wheel hubs, which cost me $600 in labor. I also had to replace the sway bar bushings, which cost me $400. Unfortunately, I misdiagnosed the problem and thought I needed 4 new struts, which would have cost me $800. However, it turned out that the EGR port in the upper intake was clogged, which is a common problem. I was able to fix it by purchasing a new EGR for $150 in parts. Additionally, the metal line in the transmission that goes to the radiator rusted out and started leaking. Unfortunately, I didn't realize it until later, and I thought the front wheel bearings were going bad. The garage couldn't diagnose the problem, and it took me 2 months to get the P0740 code. Eventually, I found out that the transmission was failing, and it would cost me $2,300 to rebuild it. Instead, I decided to buy a used one from a junkyard for $1,700 with installation. Although it doesn't come with a warranty, it's not my problem. Despite all of these issues, I was able to keep the car running until it reached 137k miles.

Positive 2000 Honda Accord car reviews

I bought this vehicle with 200,000 miles on it. After a few months, the check engine light came on. I checked it and replaced all six ignition coils. It runs great and passed the smog check. Now, with 247,000 miles on it, it's still running strong!

  2. Linwood Farrell 2024-11-02

Hello! I just wanted to share that I recently inherited my Mom's Accord, which is in amazing condition. I actually hand picked it for her back in 07/00 and got a great deal on it - only $22k out the door! She only drove it 60k miles, so it's practically brand new. I decided to sell my 93 Honda Del Sol and upgrade to this car since I'm a bit more mature now and wanted something that would serve me (and my friends) better. I'm so grateful to be able to drive this car - it still runs just as well as the day my Mom got it. The only issue I've noticed is that the transmission acts a little funny when I'm backing into my parking space, but my Mom actually got it repaired under recall so I just need to follow up with the dealer when I get the timing belt done. I do need new tires, but since I don't drive very much, I'm confident that this car will last me another 10+ years! Of course, I do miss my Mom a lot, but it's nice to have something that reminds me of her every day.

  3. Mohamed Gislason 2024-10-15

Sorry to hear about your car troubles! After my 04 Civic was totaled, I was on the hunt for a reliable and affordable car. That's when I found my Y2K Accord with only 89K miles, despite some hail damage. Unfortunately, after just three months and 4K miles, I ran into some transmission issues. When I reached out to Honda Customer Service, they suggested I take it to a Honda dealership for financial assistance, but I wasn't too keen on paying $3500 upfront for a new transmission and only *maybe* getting some money back. On top of that, I discovered another issue with the car's computer, which could cost $800 to replace. Despite these setbacks, I still think it's a good car and I'm hoping it'll make it to 150K miles. Fingers crossed!

  4. Brendan Feil 2024-08-20

Hey there! I completely agree that cars should have names, it makes them feel like a part of the family. My Accord, which I affectionately call Mean Joe Green, has been with me for a long time. I bought it at 65,400 miles and it has been a reliable companion ever since. I've had to replace a few things like belts, motor mounts, water pumps, and brake pads, but overall it has been a great car. I've even managed to get at least 28 mpg on the highway! The Goodyear Assurance Tripletreads were the perfect choice for my daily commute on twisty Mississippi back roads. Although the leather driver's seat is torn up, I replaced the seat frame and it's good as new. I can confidently say that this is the best car I've ever owned.

See similar reviews for 97' and 2005 Honda Accord LX's - This is our 2nd Honda Accord that we purchased brand new. We have always taken good care of it, getting the oil changed every 3000 to 4000 miles. It currently has 73000 miles on it and it still runs just as well as when we first bought it. We have only had to make one repair so far, which was to replace the power window regulator. It is a very comfortable and reliable car that is perfect for driving around town or cruising down the highway. It also has great power and acceleration for a 4 cylinder when needed.
