The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 2013 Honda Accord problems

The 2013 Honda Accord has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the electric power steering system and electrical components.

One of the most significant issues is the electric power steering failure, which has been reported by numerous owners. This problem is due to torque sensor failure, causing unexpected veering of the vehicle while driving and difficulty steering. The NHTSA opened an investigation into this issue, but no recalls have been issued by Honda as of now.

Another problem area for the 2013 Honda Accord is the vehicle's starter. Owners have reported a clicking or grinding noise when attempting to start their vehicle, as well as intermittent or consistent start failure. This problem has been found on vehicles with either the 2.4-liter engine or 3.5-liter V6, and with less than 50,000 miles. Some owners reported being quoted by mechanics for replacement of a failed starter costing nearly $1,000.

Other random electrical issues reported on the 2013 Accord include various failures with the battery sensor, driver door lock actuators, power steering sensors, tire pressure monitoring and vehicle stability assist sensors, among others. While these electrical problems appear to be more sporadic than the starter, they can still cause significant inconvenience and require costly repairs.

Furthermore, the 2013 Honda Accord is also susceptible to high oil consumption, battery failure, infotainment glitches, and LED headlight problems at high miles. Honda has addressed some of the automatic and CVT transmission issues, as well as some starter motor problems, but proper maintenance is critical.

In summary, the 2013 Honda Accord has several common problems related to the electric power steering system and electrical components. These issues can cause significant inconvenience and require costly repairs. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these problems and consider them before making a purchase decision.

STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-18
  • VIN: 1HGCR2F32DA
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: When overtaking a car on a one lane highway, the engine suddenly started to sputter and the steering felt unstable, and a few seconds later, four engine lights turned on (Malfunction Indicator Lamp, Vehicle Stability Assist System Indicator, Electric Power Steering System Indicator, Low Tire Pressure/TPMS Indicator). I was able to drive the car to an auto shop, where their mechanics did a diagnosis and found codes P0087, 83-11, 61-11, 85-01. While cycling through the codes all lights turned off, so they advised that I could continue to drive the car as is. A few weeks later, the same problem happened when I was driving on the highway. This time, I could not push the car past 2500 RPM, rendering the car unable to exceed 55mph on the highway. I was able to drive the car to a Honda dealership. They diagnosed P0087 and P0088 codes, and followed the TSB recommendation to replace the high pressure fuel pump. After paying the hefty replacement fee and getting the new part, the car works as expected. Q1: High pressure fuel pump failed, Honda dealership did repair so they would have the old part if not already disposed. Q2: In first instance, car became unstable at high speeds. In second instance, had to drive two hours back to dealership near me on a highway going 20mph under speed limit. Also had to pull over on a narrow shoulder. Q3: Technicians reproduced problem when holding vehicle at 3000rpm. Found code P0087 and S/B 14-039 for that code, which recommended replacing the high pressure fuel pump. Q4: Component inspected by Honda dealership. Q5: Specific warning lamps and codes listed above.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-25
  • VIN: 1HGCR2F82DA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I was stopped at a stop light. The light turned green and I started to go. My car had a major issue and was stuck in traffic. I had to push the vehicle out of traffic with the assistance of the Police Department. My vehicle was not operable. After an investigation into the issue, the Driver front axle broke in in half. No lights or prior indicators existed before the incident. Repairs have been made and this issue has caused damage to the other axle. Both have been replaced by authorized repair shops. I continue to have a “wobbling” issue while accelerating. I did go to a Honda dealership for the balance issue. They did say it is common for the axle to break and there was a recall for my Make/ Model and Year that I did not qualify for. Paperwork is attached. I have children and if my children were in my vehicle with me and I was on the highway this incident could have led to serious physical injury or death. There is a current recall which my vehicle doesn’t apply for. I believe my vehicle should apply. A news article from Honda shown to me by a Honda Dealership rep is attached as well as invoices.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
  • VIN: 1HGCR2F8XDA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: On [XXX], my CV axle broke. I was stopped at a stoplight and when the light turned green, I stepped on the accelerator, then heard a VERY loud “clunk” and my car didn’t move. I shifted into all of the other gears, but it didn’t move. I shifted it into Park and called AAA. They dispatched a tow truck driver, who arrived about 45 minutes later. He engaged the emergency brake, after checking under the car and informing me that the driver’s side CV axle had broken, which prevents the car from actually being able to shift into Park. He towed the car to an independent mechanic. Both the tow truck driver and the mechanic said it’s quite uncommon for a CV axle to break. I was about 1/2 mile from getting on the freeway and luckily I didn’t make it that far, because it could have been much worse during rush hour traffic. As it was, I was blocking a lane of traffic at the stoplight. I have both pieces of the driver’s side CV axle in my possession. No one other than the tow truck driver and mechanic have inspected it, yet. I had no warning at all that the axle was about to break. While doing some online research to find out the likelihood of the passenger side CV axle breaking, I came across a recall notice for the drive shaft of certain 2013-2015 Accords in salt belt states. My VIN search showed that my car wasn’t part of this recall and a call to a Honda dealer confirmed this. I’m puzzled, since we live in Wisconsin. Might the recall need to be expanded? Negative 2013 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Carroll Dietrich 2025-01-09

I recently purchased a 2013 Accord after narrowing down my options based on gas mileage. After test driving the car and seeing what it offered for the price, I thought it was a great bargain. The car has a sharp look and a great interior, with lots of features for the price. The gas mileage has been phenomenal, averaging around 35 mpg in approximately 65/35% highway/city driving. However, I have noticed that the CVT transmission is jerky at low speeds, which is quite noticeable and irritating during my stop and go commuting. I recommend test driving the car quite a bit before making your choice to see if the transmission is jerky. After living with the car for three years now, I have a lot more experience with it. I am still averaging just over 35 mpg which is awesome. Handling is sound and the car is still pretty quick, especially for a four cylinder. The car still runs well but the transmission remains a bit jerky at low speeds, although it is better than when I first got it. One annoyance is that it has a rough idle when it is cold. Once it warms up it is fine. Another con is that the car is just not that comfortable. The seats are hard and the ride is stiff. I have had to add a cushion to my seat. Also, on IL expressways, where they brush the concrete for traction, a lot of road noise enters the cabin. Not overly bad, but after driving a Fusion, I realized what a quiet car sounds like. The Accord is not that quiet, at least compared to a Fusion. Winter traction is poor as well, worse than my tiny Corolla. Also, to my knowledge, Honda has not issued any updates to the infotainment system. They could really improve in this area as it is becoming dated. But, it does connect to my phone every time so for calls, it works well. Overall, the car is just OK. Normally I keep my cars a long time, but I have already shopped for new cars but did not pull the trigger. So, while I wouldn't buy it again, my next car will prioritize comfort and quietness, two areas where the 2013 Accord falls short. I have some concerns about the CVT trans, as it tends to slip on occasion and can be jerky under initial hard acceleration. Additionally, the car has failed to start right away a couple of times, with the check engine, traction control, power steering assist, and low tire inflation lights coming on and the car going into limp mode. However, each time the issue resolved itself after a day or so. I believe this problem was due to my K&N air filter, which contains an oil additive that may have been causing a sensor fault. After removing it several years ago, I have not had the problem since. While Honda used to be known for solid quality, my experience with my Accord and previous, very poor experience with an Odyssey has led me to believe that they have declined over the years. In my opinion, they are no longer worth the premium they used to be (for used cars) because many others have caught up or even surpassed Honda, according to Consumer Reports. If you prioritize reliability, Toyota is the continued champ. By the way, even though I will take a beating on trade-in value, I continue to look at other cars. Update December 2017: With over 100k on the odometer, the car is running well.Although my original tires still had decent tread, I decided to purchase new ones as the OEM tires were too loud on the brushed concrete interstates in northern Illinois. I opted for the Michelin Premier AS tires, which are much quieter. However, my gas mileage has suffered, going from an average of over 35 mpg to about 33. Nonetheless, it is still great for this size car. I prefer the quietness over the mpg's. Everything is still functioning well, and there are no rattles or leaks of any sort. The suspension is also still performing well. Although the transmission is still a bit jerky at times, the car is performing well. Once every couple of months, when backing out of the garage and then putting it in drive, it feels like I am starting off in third gear (even though there are no gears in the CVT). I don't believe it is slipping, but who knows. Hopefully, the next 100k will be like it was for my 2005 Toyota Corolla, which went to 200k and had shown little degradation. Update 12/2019: After test driving other vehicles, I have come to appreciate my Accord more. Most other makes were not much better. It makes me like the Honda even more.

Although the gas mileage is as good as advertised, or better (with the 4 cylinder), the overall driving experience of this car is less than desirable due to the occasional stuttering/jerky CVT and the stiffer struts. However, it is worth noting that the dealer has checked and confirmed that the car is within specs and shows no codes. Despite these issues, the interior is nice and roomy, front and back, and the bluetooth/phone interface works great. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this car unless the CVT issue and the stiff ride do not bother you.

The 2013 Honda Accord EX-L was purchased new in June 2013. After a few months, a noticeable but soft popping/clicking noise began to come from the steering column when turning the wheel. Despite two visits to the dealer and the replacement of parts covering the airbag inside the steering column (steering angle sensor & combination bracket), the noise persisted. Unfortunately, there is no known fix for this issue. It is disappointing and embarrassing to be stuck with a new car that makes a funny noise, but it is important to note that this is a known issue affecting multiple Honda employees as well.

I have a 2013 Accord Sport with the CVT transmission. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with it that have made driving quite frustrating. Despite my concerns, Honda has not been able to find any record of a problem and the dealer has informed me that the unit is not serviceable. During normal driving, there is a constant slinky toy or rubber band feeling that causes the engine rpm to fluctuate instead of smoothly accelerating. This intermittent slippage makes driving less enjoyable. Although I am familiar with CVT technology, having owned a Murano CVT, I found the Accord Sport to be too uncomfortable to drive. Despite the great gas mileage of 29 MPG combined, I ultimately decided to trade it in after only 4900 miles.

The 2013 Accord appears to be well-built, but unfortunately, I have experienced a couple of issues since day one. The cloth on the seats is not pulled tight, and there is a significant wind noise coming from the driver's side window at high speeds. Despite the dealer's attempts to fix the issue twice, it has not been resolved. I have read on the Accord website that many other people have experienced the same problem. Honda has yet to rectify the issue, and even the dealer drove another Accord off the lot to see if it had the same problem, which it did. I would recommend test driving this car on a highway to check for wind noise before making a purchase.

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your car! It's great to hear that you haven't had any issues with it so far and that you find it fun to drive. I can definitely understand your concern about the noise from the dash and the size of the car, but it sounds like you're adjusting well. Just be careful out there on the road! Overall, it sounds like you really love your car and I'm happy for you!

After driving 800 miles in just two weeks, I am absolutely loving this car! My daily roundtrip commute is over 60 miles, and my previous Prius was driving me crazy with its lack of power, poor handling, and noise. I was looking for a reliable car that would address all of my complaints about the Prius while still getting reasonably good mileage. I almost went for the 4-cylinder Accord, but I'm so glad I chose the V6 instead. Even though I keep it in eco mode most of the time, there is always plenty of power on tap. At highway speeds, it's quiet, but you can still hear the engine growl when pressed. The fuel economy is within the claimed range, and it's getting better with every tank. Although the infotainment system takes some getting used to, I'm overall very happy with my purchase!

I'm so glad you're considering the new Accord! As someone who's 6ft+, I completely understand the struggle of finding a car that's comfortable to drive. The Accord is a great choice for you, not only because of its spaciousness, but also because of its impressive MPG and build quality. I'm thrilled to hear that you're already experiencing great gas mileage, even before breaking it in. The smooth clutch and shifter make for a really enjoyable driving experience, and the ride is both quiet and refined. The fit and finish of the car are truly impressive, making it feel like a much more expensive vehicle. I think you'll be really happy with your decision to go with the Accord!

I was originally considering the EX-L, but I didn't like the touch screen below the main screen. I ended up choosing the Sport model mainly for the wheels and the control knob below the main info screen. I prefer knobs over touch screens due to personal preference. The car feels larger inside than it looks, and the ride is firm yet in control. Although I was never a fan of CVT transmissions, I can honestly say that you rarely feel any of the rubber band pulling that I have experienced in my Honda Insight. They may have started to figure it out. I personally liked the Mazda 6, but the only advantage it had over the Accord was that it had an automatic transmission instead of a CVT. Otherwise, the Accord wins in all areas.
