1999 Honda Accord problems
The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.
Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.
In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.
In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 1999 Honda Accord problems
The 1999 Honda Accord has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:
- Ignition Switch Problems: A worn out ignition switch can cause the car to stall, even though it may re-start again. This problem was serious enough to prompt a recall, and it is recommended to check with your local Honda dealer to see if this recall has been done on your car.
- Fuel Economy: The 1999 Honda Accord has been reported to have poor fuel economy, especially in the automatic transmission models. The 2.3L VTEC Honda Accord automatic is rated at 20/28 mpg or 11.8/8.4 liters per 100 kilometers city/highway, which is lower than some other cars in its class.
- Windshield Seal Issues: The windshield seal on the 1999 Honda Accord has been reported to have issues, including peeling and lifting up. This can lead to water collecting in the seal and causing rust, which can damage the upper part of the hood where the window meets. There is no fix for this problem other than cleaning it out, sanding it, and repainting it from someone else .
- Negative Battery Cable Problems: All Hondas, including the 1999 Honda Accord, have been reported to have issues with the negative battery cable. The cable can shred, peel apart, and expose over 4 inches of the cable to the elements, which can cause a ground issue. It is recommended to check this cable regularly and replace it if necessary .
These are just some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 1999 Honda Accord. It is important to note that not all cars of this model will experience these issues, and some may have other problems not listed here. If you are experiencing any of these issues or have concerns about your 1999 Honda Accord, it is recommended to consult with a qualified mechanic or Honda dealer for further assistance.

- Summary: MY WIFE HAD PURCHASED THIS CAR NEW IN THE 1999 MODEL YEAR AND I REALIZE HONDA IS PROBABLY EXPECTING THESE CARS TO BE PAST THEIR USEFUL LIFE. UNFORTUNATELY UNAWARE CONSUMERS AND YOUNG ADULTS WILL BUY THESE EXPECTING TO PILE MILES ON THESE WHICH HONDA IS KNOWN FOR. THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE SUBFRAME ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. I PERSONALLY WATCHED THIS PARTICULAR PART OF THE CAR RAPIDLY RUST AND DETERIORATE EVEN AFTER COATING IT WITH SOME RUST INHIBITORS. THE PROBLEM AS I UNDERSTAND IT IS THE AIR CONDITIONING WAS DRIPPING CONDENSATION ON THE FRAME CAUSING THE STRUCTURE TO ROT. I REALIZED IT WAS ALMOST ROTTED THROUGH WHEN I WAS PUTTING ON A NEW PASSENGER SIDE TIRE ON, SO NOT WANTING TO PUT MONEY IN THAT KIND OF REPAIR, I GUESS MY CAR IS DONE. MY POINT IS BUYER BE WARE, HONDA HAD TO KNOW AND I STILL SEE THESE 1999 TO 2002 MODELS RUNNING AROUND.

- Summary: WHILE I AM DRIVING MY CAR SHUTS OFF. THE RADIO AND LIGHTS STAYS ON BUT EVERYTHING ON DASH IS OFF, MILAGE AND SPEED. I HAVE HAD EVERYTHING TESTED BUT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. IN JAN 2020 I HAD THIS RECALL ISSUE ADDRESSED AT THE DEALER OR AT LEAST I THOUGHT I DID. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT I AM DOING WHEN CAR SHUTS OFF. AT STOP LIGHT, TURNING THE CORNER, ON FREEWAY... AFTER CAR SHUTS OFF, I PUT CAR IN PARK AND TRY TO RESTART. 90% OF THE TIME CAR WONT RESTART. PUMPING GAS PEDAL DOESN'T HELP. ACTUALLY SOMETIMES IT STARTS AND THEN JUST SHUTS OFF AGAIN OR STARTING THE CAR DOESN'T SEEM COMPLETED, MAYBE BECAUSE MY FOOT WAS ON THE GAS PEDAL, CAR RAVES UP BUT DROPS RIGHT DOWN/OFF. I HAVE BEEN TAPPING THE BATTERY TERMINALS WITH RUBBER HANDLE OF SCREWDRIVER AND THAT SEEMS TO ALLOW MY CAR TO START. SOMETIMES I DRIVE 200 MILES AND IT DOES NOT HAPPEN. IT HAPPENS ONCE IN 90 DAYS OR TWICE IN ONE WEEK OR TWICE IN ONE DAY. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR THREE OR FOUR YEARS. IT IS JUST HAPPENING MORE OFTEN THIS PAST YEAR. ALSO, THE RECALLED AIRBAG IS TAKING TOO LONG. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN AIRBAG WAITING FOR ME SEEING HOW HONDA KNEW IT WAS RECALLED AND I WAS STILL DRIVING THE CAR. MY TEENAGE SON SITS IN PASSENGER SEAT AND NOW THAT I KNOW OF THE RECALL I FEAR FOR HIS LIFE WHILE I DRIVE. COVID-19 IS NO EXCUSE. EIGHT MONTHS WAITING SO FAR.

THEY TOLD ME THAT THE FRONT SUBFRAME OF THE VEHICLE IS RUSTED THROUGH ON THE PASSENGER-SIDE, RENDERING THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THIS APPEARS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH THE POSITION OF THE AIR CONDITIONING DRAINAGE HOSE, WHICH DRAINS DIRECTLY ONTO THE SUBFRAME ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. FURTHER, THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON ISSUE AMONGST 1998-2002 HONDA ACCORD VEHICLES. THIS ISSUE, WHICH RESULTS FROM A DESIGN FLAW, POSES A SERIOUS THREAT TO THE SAFETY OF ANY OCCUPANTS OF HONDA ACCORDS FROM THESE YEARS.

1999 Honda Accord recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 17 recalls for different components of the 1999 Honda Accord.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.

I purchased the car in 2001 because my car died 'literally' at the dealership. I'm so glad I picked this car. It's been the best car I've ever owned. No problems. Just change the oil, put gas in, and change the tires. That's all you need to do. I've never had any problems. It even takes the abuse of my wife's driving :).

I bought my second Accord over three years ago with 90k miles on it. My first '92 Accord had nearly 200k miles and the only issues were with the cruise control and a rough transmission. Unfortunately, my '99 model has a faulty transmission that slips, the lights in my dash dim periodically, the cruise control doesn't work at all, the auto locks in my rear doors are now manual, and I need new ball joints. I even had to purchase an extended warranty for my battery because it continuously dies. However, I must admit that as I am approaching 175k miles, the car still starts without a glitch. While my family has had four Hondas, each with transmission issues, I still appreciate the reliability of my car.

Wow, what a pleasant surprise! This car has 150k miles on it and still looks and drives like new. To keep it in top condition, make sure to follow the maintenance schedule and use only Honda parts. My wife and I have been enjoying this car for eight years now, and we haven't had any major mechanical issues except for one minor hiccup with the driver side door mechanism. A little pin broke and locked the door permanently, but it was an interesting experience taking the door panel off and cutting the locking mechanism out with a dremel. It was a total fluke and nobody's fault. This car gets 32 miles per gallon on the highway, which is great for our mostly highway driving. It even pushes through snow with quality snow tires. We love the stick shift and even upgraded the cloth seats to leather heated seats for only $1400. We would definitely do it again. We plan on driving this car until it can't go any further!

I'm so glad you decided to buy a 1999 Honda Accord V6 after reading Edmunds reviews! It sounds like you made a great choice. You've had it for a year now and have added 4,000 miles to the 117,000 that were already on it, and it still runs smoothly. The car has a newer paint job and looks great for its age. Although you mentioned that the transmission can be hesitant at times, it still feels durable and well-built. It's impressive that everything still works on the interior after all these years. It's no surprise that Honda always receives top reviews, and your experience confirms that for me. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I've owned several Hondas since 1986, but the Accord has been the most complete and trouble-free car I've ever had. I purchased it from the original owner with 40K miles and have only had to put on a new set of tires. It drives great, with super safe handling and impressive acceleration for a 4-cylinder. Daily driving is very comfortable and its simplistic yet contemporary style makes it one of the best cars on the road for the value.

The transmission on this car has a known defect, which unfortunately affects the 98-01 models. It is disappointing that Honda's extended warranty only covers 00-01 models, leaving 98-99 owners to bear the cost of replacing the faulty transmissions. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of this issue and make an informed decision. While this experience has been frustrating, I have found that Toyota offers a reliable alternative. Thank you for considering this information.

I really like the styling of the two door EX coupe, but I don't think I would buy a two door again. It can be a bit of a chore to get into the back seat. Unfortunately, the transmission started acting up at 120k, so I decided to trade the car. The brakes on this car are not the best, as the rotors tend to warp, which can cause some vibration under braking. While the interior quality is not the best, I have always enjoyed driving the car and have never regretted getting the 4-cylinder engine.

First of all, I want to share that when I received this car, it had over 200,000 miles on it. Despite that, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the power of the four-cylinder VTEC motor. However, I did experience an issue with the reverse gear suddenly stopping without warning. Of course, I can't blame the vehicle for that. I'm sure the previous owner wasn't one for maintenance.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Honda Accord. I purchased it at 84,000 miles and thought it would last forever, but unfortunately, I ran into some trouble with the transmission. Despite getting regular service at 85,000 miles, including a water pump, timing belt, drive belts, a/c belts, spark plugs, and transmission fluid, I noticed some slipping and hesitation between gears 1 and 2. After speaking with my mechanic, I learned that this is a known issue with Honda models from 1998-2002. I wish I had done more research before buying, but I hope my experience can help others avoid similar issues. Thanks for reading!
