The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 2010 Honda Accord problems

The 2010 Honda Accord has several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most significant issues is related to the engine, with numerous reports of excessive oil consumption around 72,000 miles. Honda has issued a technical service bulletin and settled a suit to update the engine software and extend the engine warranty. In some cases, pistons and rings may need to be replaced, which can cost over $1,500.

Another problem is premature brake wear, requiring replacement at about 32,000 miles. The pads and rotors are softer in the Accord than other cars, and wind up wearing out faster. Replacing the parts costs about $270 for new pads, and $400 for the rotors.

Uncomfortable seats are also a common complaint from owners. Many Honda vehicles from this generation have seats which some people find unsupportive. There are a few solutions to solve the problem, including adding pillows for $10, or replacing the seats with new ones costing over $1,000.

In addition, there have been issues with the airbags, with nine recalls for ruptured inflators, bad installation, and even exploding airbags. The car has seen no fewer than nine recalls for the airbags alone, and drivers have registered over one hundred airbag complaints with the NHTSA. The airbag recalls date back to 2016, with over a quarter million Accords called back to the shop for corroded power supply, which could leave the airbag not deploying in an accident.

Transmission problems have also been reported, with a potential short circuit in the automatic transmission control module affecting over one and a half million Hondas. With the automatic transmission control behaving unpredictably, any number of things can (and have) gone wrong. One driver reports a broken reverse gear fork, several others report the vehicle coming to a sudden halt, or shifting without warning, jumping into gear.

Lastly, there have been complaints about the paint, particularly those driving white colored vehicles in warm states like California and Florida. The paint is what protects your car body from rust, so it is a longevity concern.

While these issues are concerning, it's important to note that the 2010 Honda Accord has a reputation for reliability, and many owners have reported few to no problems with their vehicles. Regular maintenance and keeping an eye out for these common issues can help ensure a long and trouble-free lifespan for the car.

Is a 2010 Honda Accord a reliable car?

The 2010 Honda Accord offers an appealing combination of spaciousness, a relatively upscale feel and a reputation for reliability. However, its ride quality and overall performance are merely adequate for this segment.

Do 2010 Honda Accords have transmission problems?

Multiple Short Circuit Issues May Connect to Transmission Glitches. The 2010 Accord was included in a massive recall about a year after the car's debut, thanks to a potential short circuit in the automatic transmission control module, affecting over one and a half million Hondas.

Is Honda Accord 2010 fuel efficient?

At least Honda's V-6 is efficient: With a fuel-saving cylinder deactivation system, the V6 Accord sedan gets an impressive EPA-estimated 19/29 mpg city/highway. Relative to the four-cylinder competition, the automatic four-cylinder sedan's 21/31 mpg is less impressive.

I could not open any doors or windows and it was very hot that day and it was even hotter inside the car. I thought I was gonna die! I was trying to yell but nobody was around and my son in law just happen to pull up and I was screaming beating on the window and he heard me and saw me and rushed over and I told him to pull the latch in trunk to open back seat and he found the latch and I was able to crawl out. I thought I was gonna die!! You cannot get out of that car if you are inside and the locks are locked. There was a time not long before that my wife and I went to store and she went in and I was gonna come in after I got done with my phone call I was on and when I tried to open the door it would not open and I had to wait for her to come out of store to unlock the car so I could get out. After this last incident I was so shaken up I didn't know what to do until my brother in law told me to file a complaint before it happens to someone else that might not get lucky like I did and to call an attorney which is what I'm gonna do regardless of what they do about it. I'm a grown adult and could not get out of that car and if that were to happen to a child I don't wanna even think about what would happen and that is why I'm making this complaint so it can be fixed before it happens again if it already hasn't.

I then phoned a towing service to transport my 2010 Honda Accord to the Mobil Station at 12 mile and Farmington Roads where I normally have my Honda serviced. I then telephoned my mechanic at the Mobil station to let him know that the two truck would deliver my car to him shortly. My mechanic then recommended replacing the alternator and started, which I agreed to. The next repair was to replace the engine wiring in my Honda Accord, which did not repair the vehicle. TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-06
  • VIN: 1HGCS2B85AA
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: 235/45R18 94S M+S I originally purchased these tires because they were rated #2 on top 10 anti-hydroplaning lists. After receiving the tires I realized the anti-hydroplaning characteristics are due to an unusually deep tire tread. After driving them a bit I realized that the tire compound had excessive lack of grip on lightly wet surfaces and often on dry surfaces. So they may be good for anti-hydroplaning as long as the tree depth is deep, but the worst traction for dry or slightly wet surfaces for ANY tire I have ever driven. Going down slight downhills with a turn is extremely dangerous even at slow speeds. This morning I was going down a short street with a slight grade and a turn at the bottom when the car failed to turn and continued straight (like on ice). These tires (same on my wife's Mazda) have had traction problems since we bought and installed them. My wife's Mazda won't go up hills with turns on dry pavement and at slow speeds without losing traction. All tires on both vehicles have decent tread depth. This is a dangerous driving condition on uphill/w turns and especially on downhill/w turns. I believe the NTSB should do an investigation into car accident deaths occurring on graded hills with turns at the top or bottom of the inclinations. The tire in suspect is the Firestone Winterforce 2 tire. Please investigate this to possibly save lives. And if a high accident rate is found please have these tires recalled.

I was able to navigate the vehicle off the roadway. The vehicle was towed to a dealership where the vehicle was diagnosed that the piston rings needed to be replaced. I have 59,000 original miles on it! I was told by the service advisor that it was common in Hondas with v6 due to the Ecco or vcm. I found out extended warranty was given to owners, I didn't. I want to know why I didn't and why I never received a recall? I'm not spending $6000 for something that was a terrible design. So I researched it and saw this Manufacturer Communication ID: 10120775 says: In this service bulletin, Honda alerted dealerships that the driver’s side vent may produce a lower level of heat than what is coming from the front passenger’s vent. The most common cause is that the car’s heater core is partially clogged. When this happens, it can cause the heater's performance to fail. The company instructed dealerships that encounter this problem to flush the heater core to resolve it. No recall has been issued, but dealerships should know how to handle this problem. I will reach out to Honda dealerships in my area to see what happens.

Negative 2010 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Steve Koepp 2024-11-09

I leased the car new and later purchased it based on its trade-in value. Despite some minor issues that were not addressed by Honda during visits, the car had very good mileage and was overall a solid vehicle. The car had some gasket issues that caused cross-contamination between oil and coolant systems, but thankfully, it was covered under warranty. The keyless entry had poor range/life and was replaced several times under warranty, but it still required being within 20 feet of the car to open/close locks. The engine made rattling noises at startup from the day I purchased it, but once warm, the car would not make the noise. Several years later, a TBS was put out for a faulty VTC actuator that Honda will not honor. Additionally, the car burns 3/4 quart of oil every 1000 miles, which is not ideal for anyone looking to purchase a used vehicle. Other minor issues include uncomfortable seating (forward fixed position headrests), a noisy AC fan (which was not covered under warranty), a noisy drive in general, and lights that went out in the dash (which is common according to Honda service). Repairs at a dealer can be quite expensive, such as $200 for swapping out bulbs in the center console and $650 for front brake replacement only. However, I believe that Honda products are still of good quality. A family friend's Fusion was the same price and had some extra features, but the car is holding up much better mechanically and in terms of resale value.

Our 2010 Honda Accord has been disappointing. The panel gaps are too wide and the battery did not last as long as expected. Additionally, the NAV system has failed, which is unacceptable given the 3yr/36k mile warranty. We expect better quality from Honda.

My 2010 V6 Honda Accord has been in the shop for over 2 weeks since this summer. Despite spending a minimum of $700 for each repair, the check engine light keeps coming on. As a result, I have decided not to purchase a Honda again as I bought it for its reliability and longevity. My old Dodge gave me 250,000 reliable miles, and this car started having issues a little before I hit 100,000 miles. It is clear that my experience with Honda has not met my expectations for a reliable vehicle.

  4. Jesus Romaguera 2024-03-15

I've owned my 2010 Accord for just over three years now. Unfortunately, this year I was informed that the oil was low and that I needed a $125 software update. After only a few months, I found myself stranded on the highway due to misfired spark plugs caused by the low oil. The spark plugs were changed and the software update was redone on June 1st. However, by July 7th, the oil was low again, and I had to add a quart. This happened again around two weeks later. Last night, I noticed the car running rough, and then it happened again. The check engine light started flashing, and the car felt like it was going to shut off. So, I had to take it to the dealership. It's time to get rid of this car, and I'm so disappointed. I wish Honda would step up to the plate like Toyota did.

Positive 2010 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Henri Wehner 2024-11-15

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! It sounds like it's been a perfect match for you so far. The sleek and stylish design gives it a fierce look that I'm sure turns heads. It's great to hear that you haven't had any problems with it since buying it used. From your description, it sounds like it handles like a champion, and you're able to take fast corners without losing any traction. The brakes are also great, and the dash is very well organized, making it easy to find what you're looking for. I hope you have a chance to test it out in some snow soon!

  2. Brendon Turner 2024-11-07

This car looks great inside and out. The interior is quite spacious with good trunk space. It gets about 32 mpg on the freeway and about 23 mpg around town. We bought the car used about 7 months ago and it currently has about 92K miles. We have the 4-cyl engine and it doesn't require any additional oil between oil changes. If you're looking for a car with a decent driving experience that's spacious, safe, reliable, and looks great, then consider getting the 4-cyl Accord. While it's not a luxury vehicle, it certainly has its perks. Although there is some road noise and the ride is not as smooth as you'd expect, the acceleration and handling are decent. There is some body roll when making sharp turns, but overall it's a great car for its value. It also has a wide turn radius and rear visibility isn't great, but it's still a safe and reliable option.

  3. Abner Kessler 2024-11-04

I'm glad to hear that you were able to find a car that is loaded with features for under $26k. While we didn't use snow tires on the 18-inch wheels, we relied on ESC/ABS and didn't have any issues driving in the winter. However, if I were still in the Dakotas, I might have been torn. With spirited driving, we were able to achieve 19mpg in the city and 27mpg on the highway at 82mph. It's best to use low octane for optimal results. High-octane fuel is not necessary for Accords since they do not have high-compression engines. In fact, using high-octane fuel is wasteful and can actually reduce mileage. It's important to note that low octane fuel doesn't mean inferior gas, it simply burns quicker. Unfortunately, all Accords tend to suffer from road noise, even after using several cans of rubberized undercoating. This is surprising since they clearly attempted to create an upscale feel. If you're looking for a quieter ride, you may want to consider the Acura.

  4. Stefan D'Amore 2024-10-20

I'm so glad to hear that you and your family are okay after such a scary experience! It's amazing that you all walked away without serious injuries. I'm happy to hear that you were able to find another 2010 Accord to replace the one that was totaled. It's great to know that the car has a 5 star crash rating and can keep you and your loved ones safe. Thank you for sharing your story with us!

Honda makes a great sedan, especially the older ones with the V-6 engine.
