Ferrari S.p.A. (/fəˈrɑːri/; Italian: ) is an Italian luxury sports car manufacturer based in Maranello, Italy. Founded in 1939 by Enzo Ferrari (1898–1988), the company built its first car in 1940, adopted its current name in 1945, and began to produce its current line of road cars in 1947. Ferrari became a public company in 1960, and from 1963 to 2014 it was a subsidiary of Fiat S.p.A. It was spun off from Fiat's successor entity, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, in 2016. In 2024, the Wall Street Journal summed up the company's reputation in this way: "Ferrari has been synonymous with opulence, meticulous craftsmanship and ridiculously fast cars for nearly a century."

The company currently offers a large model range which includes several supercars, grand tourers, and one SUV. Many early Ferraris, dating to the 1950s and 1960s, count among the most expensive cars ever sold at auction. Owing to a combination of its cars, enthusiast culture, and successful licensing deals, in 2019 Ferrari was labelled the world's strongest brand by the financial consultancy Brand Finance. As of May 2023, Ferrari is also one of the largest car manufacturers by market capitalisation, with a value of approximately US$52 billion.

Throughout its history, the company has been noted for its continued participation in racing, especially in Formula One, where its team, Scuderia Ferrari, is the series' single oldest and most successful. Scuderia Ferrari has raced since 1929, first in Grand Prix events and later in Formula One, where since 1952 it has fielded fifteen champion drivers, won sixteen Constructors' Championships, and accumulated more race victories, 1–2 finishes, podiums, pole positions, fastest laps and points than any other team in F1 history. Historically, Ferrari was also highly active in sports car racing, where its cars took many wins in races like the Mille Miglia, Targa Florio and 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as several overall victories in the World Sportscar Championship. Scuderia Ferrari fans, commonly called tifosi, are known for their passion and loyalty to the team.

Common Ferrari problems

Based on the complaints from Ferrari owners, several common problems with Ferrari cars have been highlighted:

  • Strict Ownership Rules: Ferrari imposes strict rules on its owners, prohibiting actions like selling the vehicle below market price, making alterations to the car, covering the badge, or even owning Lamborghinis. Violating these rules can result in being banned from owning a Ferrari, as seen with celebrities like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Justin Bieber.
  • Limited Access to Exclusive Models: Being on Ferrari's VIP list grants access to the most exclusive models, but getting on this list is extremely challenging. Even loyal customers like David Lee, with a $50 million car collection, have been denied access to certain models despite their history with the brand.
  • Not Suitable for Everyday Use: Ferrari cars are not practical for everyday use in most locations, except perhaps in places like the United Arab Emirates or Monte Carlo. Factors like bad weather and the high maintenance costs make using a Ferrari as a daily driver impractical for many owners.
  • Legal Disputes and Brand Protection: Ferrari is known for filing lawsuits to protect its brand integrity, demanding that owners adhere strictly to the original design of their vehicles. Any modifications that deviate from the brand's standards can lead to legal action, as seen in cases like the Ferrari F40 Barchetta Beurlys and the "Purrari" customized Ferrari 458.

These issues highlight the challenges and restrictions that come with owning a Ferrari, from maintenance concerns to strict ownership rules and legal battles over brand protection. Ferrari owners must navigate these complexities to enjoy the prestige and performance associated with the iconic Italian automaker.

  • Summary: All the plastic in the dashboard, including all the buttons that are essential for operating the car, starts melting, the labels on these essential buttons become unidentifiable, and it coats the fingertips and hands with melted sticky plastic which renders the driving experience not safe as one is trying to clean his/her hands from essentially glue. A quick google search shows this is an extremely common problem in these cars. While there is an obvious cosmetic issue here, I believe this is also a safety issue when the button labels cannot be read, or when a glue-like chemical is all over the hands while driving.

  • Summary: On 07 September 2021, I had been driving my 2018 Ferrari 488 Spider for 8 to 10 miles when the car suddenly displayed the following message "Brake Fluid Low, Go to Dealer Slowly". (note: Dealer is 2 hours away at 60 mph). As I slowed the car from approximately 45 mph, the brakes felt minimal but with down-shifting and minimal brakes I was able to slow the car. I attempted to limp home at 5 to 10 mph however within 3 miles or so the brakes failed completely. With the pedal to the floor there was absolutely no effect on the vehicle. It was fortunate that I was able to slow the car prior to complete failure and did not hit anything or anyone. Once the brakes failed completely, I did end up running through a stop sign before I could pull off the road into a parking lot and only stopped the car by rolling into an uphill parking spot and hitting the concrete parking barrier with the tires. I found it was necessary to turn the car off in order to keep it from rolling backwards. The car does not have a classic emergency brake but rather an electronic hold function. When trying to activate this function to keep the car from rolling backwards the car displayed the following message (as best I can remember) "Depress Brake Pedal to Activate Hold". However, with the brake pedal fully depressed, the function would not activate even though it worked fine prior to the brake failure (and subsequent to repair). The car was towed to the dealer and repaired under warranty. The service manager reported that the Master Cylinder leaked into the vacuum booster. I had requested that the failed parts be returned to me however the service manager advised me that failed parts replaced under warranty are returned to Ferrari.

  • Summary: ON 6/4/21, MY 2018 FERRARI 488 GTB DISPLAYED A MESSAGE IN MY LEFT DASH INSTRUMENT PANEL PRIOR TO COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE IN MY DRIVEWAY THAT READ "BRAKE FLUID LOW-DRIVE TO DEALER SLOWLY", THAT RESULTED IN MY FERRARI BEING TOTALED BY STATE FARM AFTER I JUMPED OUT OF THE RUNNING AND MOVING FERRARI ONTO MY REAR LAWN BETWEEN 10 TO 15 MILES PER HOUR BEFORE IT WENT INTO A POND BEHIND MY RESIDENCE. THEN, 6-WEEKS LATER THE REPLACEMENT 2018 FERRARI GTB VIN#[XXX] I PURCHASED FROM FERRARI OF ATLANTA DISPLAYED THE SAME MESSAGE IN MY LEFT DASH INSTRUMENT PANEL THAT READ "BRAKE FLIUID LOW-DRIVE TO DEALER SLOWLY BEFORE THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR AS I WAS PULLING INTO MY GARAGE. AFTER HAVING THE REPLACMENT FERRARI TOWED INTO CONTINENTAL FERRARI IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKE FLUID HAD LEAKED INSIDE THE BRAKE BOOSTER THAT CAUSED THE BRAKE FAILURE ON THE REPLACEMENT FERRARI. THE FIRST FERRARI WAS TAKEN TO A COMPANY AND SOLD AS SALVAGE. THE COMPANY NAME IS COPART AND THEIR TELEPHONE NUMBER IS (314) 291-8400. NONE OF THE FERRARI SERVICE DEPARTMENTS OR SALES DEPARTMENTS THAT I CONTACTED HAD ANY RECORD OR KNOWLEDGE OF THE BRAKE FAILURE PROBLEMS THAT I EXPERIENCED WITHIN A 6-WEEK PERIOD ON 2 SEPARATE FERRAI 488 GTB'S. I COULD HAVE BEEN TRAPPED INSIDE MY FERRARI THAT WENT INTO THE POND BEHIND MY RESIDENCE AND POSSIBLY KILLED. I COULD ALSO HAVE BEEN INJURED OR KILLED ALONG WITH OTHER MOTORISTS IN MY REPLACMENT FERRARI THAT HAD THE SAME BRAKE FAILURE ISSUE JUST 6-WEEKS LATER IF I WAS UNABLE TO GET THE REPLACEMENT FERRARI HOME AND SAFELY INSIDE NY GARAGE BEFORE THE BRAKES COMPLETELY FAILED A SECOND TIME. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY FERRARI HAS THE MESSAGE "BRAKE FLUID LOW-DRIVE TO DEALER SLOWLY" DISPLAY" THAT GIVES DRIVERS A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY THAT THE BRAKES WILL CONTINUE TO WORK PROPERLY UNTIL YOU DRIVE TO THE DEALER. THAT'S A DEADLY WARNING AND MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN TO ME. MY CELL NUMBER IS [XXX] AND I LIVE IN THE ST. LOUIS AREA. PLEASE CALL ME! • Summary: I HAVE A 2012 FERRARI 458 ITALIA AND THE "FLAPPER" ON THE FUEL FILLER DOES NOT CLOSE. I'VE NOTICED ON A COUPLE OCCASIONS THAT AFTER FILLING AND "SPIRITED" DRIVING (CORNING AT LEGAL SPEEDS) I WILL HAVE FUEL ON THE SIDE OF THE CAR. THIS INDICATES THAT THE FUEL CAN "SLOSH" OUT OF THE FILLER NECK. I'VE GOT A CONCERN THAT THIS COULD IGNITE CAUSING A FIRE. I'VE BEEN ABLE TO MANIPULATE THE FLAPPER TO GET IT TO CLOSE, BUT IT STICKS OPEN AGAIN AFTER THE NEXT FUEL UP. I'VE ATTACHED A PICTURE OF THE ABNORMAL CONDITION. THE FLAPPER IS STUCK OPEN IN THE ABNORMAL CONDITION AND IS THE SAFETY CONCERN. I BELIEVE THE FLAPPER SHOULD ALWAYS RETURN TO CLOSED WHEN FUEL FILLER NECK IS REMOVED FROM THE AUTOMOBILE.
