2002 Honda Accord problems
The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.
Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.
In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.
In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 2002 Honda Accord problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Honda Accord 2002, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Transmission Problems: The 2002 Honda Accord has been known to experience high rates of transmission issues. Owners have reported problems such as jerking and slipping between gears. In severe cases, the transmission may fail outright, necessitating a costly replacement that can exceed $2000. This issue can be particularly frustrating as transmissions are expected to last well over 150,000 miles.
- Recalls: The Honda Accord 2002, like many other model years, has been subject to numerous recalls. These recalls cover a range of problems including airbag issues, seat belt malfunctions, light problems, and transmission issues. While the repairs for recalled parts are typically done for free, the process can be time-consuming and may leave owners without a vehicle for multiple instances. Neglecting a recall could potentially lead to serious accidents.
- Starter Failure: Owners of the 2013 Honda Accord have reported difficulties with the starter failing, often occurring just after the warranty expires. Replacing the starter can cost around $700. This problem can leave drivers stranded and in need of immediate repair.
- Power Steering Failure: Another issue with the 2013 model is the reported failure of the power steering function while driving. This sudden loss of power steering can pose a significant safety risk, potentially leading to accidents. Repair costs for this problem can vary but may exceed $500.
- Engine Problems: Similar to earlier models like the 2008 and 2009 Honda Accords, the 2013 Accord has been associated with engine issues. Some drivers have reported excessive oil consumption, leading to the need for a complete engine replacement in severe cases. This can be a costly repair and a major inconvenience for owners.
These common problems with the Honda Accord 2002 highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt attention to recalls, and awareness of potential issues to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-07
- VIN: 1HGCG56632A
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: The right side of the main front subframe of the car broke. The subframe on the right side was completely rusted out and corroded away. However, the left side of the subframe was perfectly intact with no damage and only minor surface rust. The car has only 50,000 miles on it. When the subframe broke my friends [XXX]aunt [XXX] old) was driving and the right side of the car dropped down and the steering was compromised. The broken subframe resulted in a loss of control of the car but an accident was avoided thankfully due to her only driving at low speeds. They took the car to an independent mechanic, who welded some support brackets to the subframe to get the car to move. After doing some research, I found multiple forums, websites, videos, and repair TSBs about this issue. The failure occurred because of an engineering failure of the placement of the HVAC evaporator drain hose. The hose drips the draining moisture right onto the right side of the subframe. Over time, this trapped moisture leads to corrosion and rust formation on the subframe. The corrosive effect weakens the structural integrity of the subframe, which caused the subframe to break under normal driving conditions. A mechanic has inspected and patch repaired the subframe. I am willing to have the car inspected if requested. There were no symptoms before the failure, it happened all of the sudden. Joe Morgan Honda said they don't make the seat anymore and it was important that I not get a seat from a vehicle that had been wrecked, because so no seat in a scrapped vehicle could be found. I complained to the better business bureau to the Honda Corporation at 1919 Torrance, CA and the Better Business Bureau said they refused to answer the safety complaint Silicon Valley Complaint #[XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Fire: 1
- VIN: JHMCG56442C
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Car exploded spontaneously. Fire department thinks it started in the steering wheel/ignition area. Vehicle is still parked on the street and is available for inspection. No one was in or around the vehicle, but it seems if someone had been in the car they would certainly have been incinerated. Anyone in the street would have been struck by shrapnel. Only the fire department has seen the vehicle so far, to put the fire out. This happened last night (1/31/24) about 8:30 pm central time. This happened with no warning, car was parked and turned off - had just been driven 2 hours prior.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-28
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1HGCG668X2A
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: On Sept. 28, 2023 I was driving this car and it was on a very rough highway and it went into a skid and flipped over and was totaled. It was towed to Willow Creek, CA for one week. I was badly injured and had no way to get to Willow Creek, CA so I had to pay $500 for it to be stored and they eventually got the title of the car from me and allegedly disposed of the 2002 Accord. I did not see it after the accident as I was bedridden and unable to travel to see the condition of my car. The passenger's side of the back seat was GONE and you could see the ground, I do remember that much despite my severe injuries to my head and body. I was the driver and the driver's side airbags failed to deploy despite the numerous time I took it in to Mid-City Motor World in Eureka, CA responding to numerous airbag recalls. I was told prior airbag recalls had not worked and that is why I had to keep going back to have them done over and over again. I am the original owner of this car and I got hurt badly in this accident. It has been over two months now and I have yet to fully recover. I often wonder if I ever will fully recover as I still have pain in my back, arms, legs and head. If the airbags had worked, I would not have ended up bedridden with a head injury and unable to move. I had no help at all after the accident. Shame on you Honda for failing to assist a person that was injured because of one of the cars you made that has a history of recalls as noted at this federal government link: [XXX] I called HONDA on the phone to report his incident and have never received a call back to my knowledge. 1 800 999 1009 is the telephone number I have called. I was told they called me back on time. Did they really? Isn't there some sort of compensation for people driving a car that had numerous airbag recalls that failed when an accident occurred? I will never buy another Honda again as I am so disgusted. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

They must have been trying to open other doors, trunk or something else. I'm not sure how they were able to open the driver side door, maybe a crow bar what whatever else they use. I did not hear my car alarm go off. I checked my car for anything stolen, but didn't seem to find any thing missing. Will check it again. On another note, there was a night about a month ago where my neighbor heard gun shots outside my back door under the plum tree. Same side of location where my car is parked. - Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2001-2007 Accord, 2001-2005 Civic, 2001-2004 Honda Civic GX, 2003-2005 Honda Civic Hybrid, 2002-2006 CR-V, 2003-2011 Element, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2003-2008 Pilot, 2006 Ridgeline, 2003 Acura 3.2CL, 2003-2006 Acura MDX, and 2002-2003 Acura 3.2TL vehicles. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion and other factors, including manufacturing variability that, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 1, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-800-382-2238, select option 4. Note: Vehicles that have had their driver frontal air bag replaced previously as part of a recall remedy prior to September 12, 2014 need to have their air bag replaced under this recall as well. Vehicles that, on or after September 12, 2014, received a remedy for a prior driver frontal air bag inflator recall already received an inflator of a different design, and therefore are not included in this recall and do not require additional servicing. Note: This recall fully supersedes recalls 08V-593, 09V-259, 10V-041, 11V-260, 14V-351 and 15V-153. Honda's numbers for this recall are JQ9, JR0, JR1, JR2, JR3, JR4, JR5, JR6, JR7, and JR8.

I purchased my Honda Accord 3 years ago after experiencing issues with my daughter's Kia. Since then, this car has been nothing short of amazing. It is by far the most reliable car I have ever owned. I bought it with 90,000 miles on it and it now has 140,000 miles, and I have only done regular maintenance such as oil changes and transmission service. Although I have considered purchasing a new car, it's hard to let go of a vehicle that has been so reliable and gets 26mpg city and 38mpg highway. I have read reviews that mention transmission problems with automatic transmissions, but I have not experienced any issues with mine. It could be due to my meticulous maintenance or the fact that my Honda is a 4cyl engine, which may have fewer problems than the 6cyl engine. Some articles suggest that the heat of the 6cyl motor may affect the transmission, but I am not sure if there is any science behind that theory. Overall, the car drives smoothly, has plenty of power, and is built solidly. The interior still looks great, and everything works as it should. If there is a downside, it would only be the clear coat peeling on the roof, but considering the car's age and the fact that it sits outside 24/7, it's not a major issue. This car is great, and it's no wonder you still see these old cars on the road after being 14 years old.

I have experienced transmission problems with my Honda Accord, which required replacement at 110,000 miles and again at 165,000 miles. Despite regularly scheduled maintenance and careful driving, the issues persisted. While I have been a loyal Honda customer since 1981 and have enjoyed owning this particular Accord for 9 years, I am hesitant to purchase another one given the less than stellar reviews of the 07-09 models. The first transmission was replaced by Honda at no cost, but the second replacement cost me $2k.

I came across these reviews and wanted to share my experience. I have a 2002 Accord, 4 cyl. auto, with over 245,000 miles on it. I have been diligent with all scheduled maintenance, including timing belts @ 90K, oil changes every 5-7,000 miles, and trans fluid changes. My first Honda was a 1990 Civic that had over 250,000 miles before I bought the Accord. I do a lot of highway driving and have always trusted Honda.

We bought a no-frills new car back in 2002, and we have been quite pleased with it. Unfortunately, we have had some increased service issues in the past 12 months. It's sad to see it go, but we would definitely consider purchasing a new one.

I understand how frustrating it can be when you have to let go of a car that has been with you for a long time. It seems like you have taken good care of it, but sometimes we have to be realistic and accept that it's time to move on. Have you considered taking it to a mechanic for an evaluation? They might be able to give you some suggestions on how to improve its performance. As for the oil flush, I would recommend consulting with a professional to ensure that you are using the right product for your car. It's great that you are doing regular oil changes, that will definitely help keep your car running smoothly. I hope you find a car that you love just as much as your old one!

The Accord 2002 V6 has had a significant number of reported transmission failures around the 110,000/120,000 mile mark. Although there has been no recall as it is not a safety issue, we understand the frustration this may cause. Additionally, there have been known issues with the timing chain and paint. We understand the inconvenience and cost associated with these issues. However, we are confident in our ability to provide a solution that will meet your needs and exceed your expectations. We value your loyalty as a Honda customer and hope to continue serving you in the future.

The car has been in the shop for 21 days for repairs, including a transmission leak, rough engine idle requiring a valve adjustment and replacement of all mounts. Despite these repairs, the engine problem remains unresolved. Honda has denied the existence of the problem. Other issues include a defective seat frame, major rattles requiring replacement of multiple parts, and a failed fuel gauge. The A/C fan relay clicks constantly, but this issue cannot be replicated at the Honda dealer. The brakes have been squealing since day one, and the interior panels have warped and distorted, some arriving damaged and falling off. Despite these challenges, I am confident that we can find a solution to these issues and ensure that the car runs smoothly.

I've owned this car since 2005 and I must say, it has been quite a journey. However, I made a quick decision to buy it without doing research, which turned out to be a bad move. I would advise anyone looking to buy a car to take 5 minutes to look up official recall complaints. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Anyone who gives this car a good review might have limited knowledge and/or experience with cars. The automatic transmission might go down in history for being one of the worst ever made. Have you ever noticed Accords with faded paint? That's another inherent problem. Some received a cheaper paint and clear coat resulting in the discoloration. If I had taken even 2 minutes to research this car, I would not have bought it. Unfortunately, it's currently sitting in my garage broken and it would cost $2000 to fix the transmission. I have decided not to fix it as rebuilt and refurbished transmissions have the same problem.

I bought a 2002 Accord 4 cyl about a year and a half ago with 85,000 miles on it. Before purchasing, I took it to a Honda dealership who checked it out and said it was in great shape. Unfortunately, it now needs a new transmission with less than 100,000 miles. Although I've never had a car with less than 100,000 miles on it need a transmission, I've heard that this is a recurring problem with these cars. I contacted American Honda, but they said they would not help with the repair since I'm not the original owner and they have no dealership maintenance records. While I'm disappointed, I understand their position. I'll probably take a break from buying Hondas for a while, but I appreciate the good times I had with this one.

I purchased a brand new 2002 Accord with high hopes for a reliable car, but unfortunately, I experienced several issues. At 12,000 miles, the transmission stopped working, and although Honda initially gave me a hard time, they eventually replaced it with a factory rebuilt one. However, this replacement transmission never worked properly. At 32,000 miles, the paint on the hood began to peel, and unfortunately, Honda would not cover the cost of repair. I had to pay $800 out of pocket. At 36,000 miles, the brake calipers froze up, and again, Honda would not provide any assistance. I had to pay $750 for the repair. The catalytic converter cover had to be replaced every two years, and at 60,000 miles, the catalytic converter failed. Despite the emissions being covered for eight years or 80,000 miles, Honda refused to cover the cost of repair. While waiting for my car to be repaired at the dealership, my car was involved in an accident, and although Honda did pay for the damages, the situation was handled poorly. Despite four documented complaints about the transmission, Honda of America refused to provide any assistance, leaving me with a car that no longer moves. Although the car looks great and was well-maintained, it is now unfortunately unusable. While I have had a negative experience with this particular Honda model, I encourage everyone to do their own research and make their own informed decisions when purchasing a car.
