The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 2001 Honda Accord problems

The 2001 Honda Accord, a popular choice for its reliability, has been known to have several common problems based on owner complaints. Here are some of the issues in detail:

  • Ignition Switch Failure: A worn ignition switch can cause the car to stall, even though it may re-start again. This issue was severe enough to warrant a recall, so it is essential to check if the recall has been done on your car. If the ignition switch has already been replaced, it's still worth checking it out to ensure there are no other related issues.
  • Noises and Leaks: Owners have reported noises such as squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals, and/or weather stripping issues, as well as air and water leaks. For instance, sunroof drainage problems near the front driver's side near the foot pedals and clunking associated with the suspension have been reported.
  • Timing Belt: The timing belt in the 2001 Honda Accord, especially in the 2.3-liter VTEC engine, can wear out and cause problems. It is recommended to replace the timing belt at the recommended intervals (105,000 miles or 168,000 km for normal operating conditions) to avoid potential engine damage.
  • Fuel Economy: The 1999-2001 2.3L VTEC Honda Accord automatic is rated at 20/28 mpg (11.8/8.4 liters per 100 kilometers) city/highway. This means you can get up to 375 miles or 600 kilometers to a tank. However, some owners have reported lower fuel efficiency, which could be due to various factors, including driving habits, maintenance, and engine or transmission issues.
  • Air Conditioner: Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioner, so it is essential to test the air conditioner when buying a used Honda Accord.
  • Wheel Bearings: Bad wheel bearings are not uncommon in the 2001 Honda Accord. During the test drive, listen for humming noise coming from the wheel bearings. If you notice any issues, it's essential to address them promptly to avoid further damage.
  • Windshield Seal: The windshield seal, specifically the outside weather-protector seal, can peel up and cause water to collect in the upper part of the hood where the window meets. This can lead to rust and potential hood damage over time .
  • Negative Battery Problem: All Hondas, including the Accord, have been known to have a negative battery problem where the battery cables shred, peel apart, and expose the cable to the elements. This can lead to ground issues and potential electrical problems .

In summary, while the 2001 Honda Accord is generally considered a reliable vehicle, these common problems should be taken into account when purchasing a used one or maintaining an existing one. Regular maintenance, including timely replacement of the timing belt and addressing any issues as soon as they arise, can help ensure the longevity and reliability of this popular vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-09-13
  • VIN: 1HGCG66881A
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I am able to turn the ignition to the off position and remove the key without putting the vehicle in park. While this has not resulted in an accident YET, the car did roll down my driveway once. Someone could die as a result of this problem. I believe the issue is with the ignition interlock. Both the dealer and an independent mechanic told me it was an expensive repair and “not worth doing on this car”. The thing is, there is a recall for this very issue on other 1999-2002 Honda Accord sedans, but the recall does not include my car’s VIN. This is a public safety threat that make me afraid to sell or donate my car. The problem has been ongoing for about 3 years. There are no warning lights associated with the problem, but a number of other electrical issues have been developing.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-14
  • VIN: 1HGCG32521A
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I AM WRITING TO YOU IN REGARDS TO A SAFETY CONCERN WITH MY 2001 HONDA ACCORD. THE ENGINE SUBFRAME OF MY 2001 HONDA ACCORD LX HAS 1/4 ENGINE CONNECTIONS ROTTED THROUGH. THIS IS LOCATED ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE NEAR THE STRUT ASSEMBLY, BENEATH THE AIR CONDITIONER DRAIN, AS NOTED BY OTHERS ON POSTING ON THE INTERNET. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE SUBFRAME WAS RUSTED. THE VEHICLE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION OTHERWISE, ESPECIALLY WITH VERY LOW MILES (156,000) THERE IS VERY LITTLE RUST ON THE VEHICLE CONSIDERING IT'S AGE. MY MECHANIC SAYS IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. HE WRITES: 'DURING DEGREASING (AND REPAIR OF RADIATOR) FOUND ENGINE SUB-FRAME RUSTING OUT AND COMING APART. ADVISED CLIENT THE VEHICLE IS A SAFETY RISK TO DRIVE IN THIS CONDITION'. IT APPEARS TO BE THE RESULT OF A DESIGN FLAW RELATING TO THE LOCATION OF THE AIR CONDITIONER DRAIN. HONDA SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS DESIGN FLAW AND HONDA SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE TO REPAIR THIS UNSAFE SITUATION. I AM SHOCKED THIS CATASTROPHIC SAFETY CONDITION WAS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE WITHOUT WARNING BY HONDA AND/OR THE NHTSA!!

Due to a manufacturing error, in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver frontal air bag, these inflators may explode.
  • Consequence: An explosion of an inflator within the driver frontal air bag module may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver, front seat passenger or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began April 10, 2019. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion and other factors, including manufacturing variability that, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 1, 2015. Negative 2001 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Nasir Herman 2024-10-03

I purchased the Honda Accord EX V6 based on positive reviews, but unfortunately experienced transmission issues within a week of ownership. The transmission began slipping and both the engine light and D4 light illuminated. After consulting with a mechanic, it was determined that the transmission needed to be rebuilt, which could cost up to $2000. Despite these challenges, I still believe in the quality of this car.

  2. Kyleigh Kunze 2024-09-26

My Honda has had five transmissions, the driver's window no longer rolls down, and there are numerous electrical issues. Despite only having 155,000 miles on it, the cost of repairs is now prohibitively expensive due to engine problems.

  3. Nicolas Reinger 2024-09-22

I bought a Honda due to their excellent ratings and reputation for reliability. However, I experienced two expensive repairs. With low mileage, I had to have the transmission replaced, but thankfully Honda covered it and extended the warranty to 100k. I also had to repair a rear main seal with around 50k mileage. Although all independent sources indicated that it was a faulty design/workmanship, Honda refused to admit it. Therefore, I would caution against believing the hype that the 2001 LX model is the most reliable car out there.

  4. Neil Dickinson 2024-09-18

Honda's transmission issues are well-known, and unfortunately, I experienced them firsthand with my first and last Honda. Despite being aware of the issue, Honda refuses to assist with repairs if the warranty has expired by even a day or a mile. It is disappointing that a company would knowingly sell a product with a high potential for failure and not stand behind it. My personal experience has led me to view Honda as an unreliable company to deal with. I would advise caution when considering purchasing a Honda vehicle.

  5. Kyleigh Gerlach 2024-09-09

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Honda. I've had to replace the transmission four times over the past 15 years, and it's cost me $8,500. While it's been a bit of a hassle, overall it's been an okay car. However, I don't think I'll be buying another Honda in the future. If you're considering purchasing one, I recommend doing your research first!

Positive 2001 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Sonny Schmitt 2025-01-05

I bought this car for $7500 when it had 101,000 miles on it. It's the EX 4cyl/manual transmission with leather package, which is a rare combination but definitely worth it. The car is packed with safety and comfort features, and the leather seats are incredibly comfortable. The back seat can comfortably seat two people, and I love the audio controls on the steering wheel. I highly recommend the manual transmission for this car for a few reasons. Firstly, the automatic transmission is known to have reliability issues, and many people end up spending over $3000 to replace it. The manual transmission, on the other hand, is trouble-free. Additionally, you can really get the most out of the engine with the 5-speed, and it also has better gas mileage.

  2. Jeff Koch 2024-11-01

I recently purchased my Accord from a dealer. Despite having to replace the clutch hydraulics and two coolant hoses, this car has been absolutely incredible! On a recent 750-mile trip to Oregon, I was able to get 32 mpg with the A/C on, driving 75 mph, and with a ton of stuff in the trunk! While the interior may be a bit dated, this is still a fantastic car. If you're considering purchasing one, just make sure to check that the timing belt and water pump have been replaced, and opt for the manual transmission as it's better suited to the 2.3 liter engine. Overall, I highly recommend this car!

  3. Matt Cummings 2024-10-22

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your Honda Accord! It's amazing that you've had it since 2002 and it's still going strong with 124K miles. It sounds like you've taken great care of it with regular oil changes, major services, brakes, and tires. I'm sure it will last another 200K miles with the same level of care. It's great to hear that you've been so happy with it and that you're planning to purchase another Honda Accord when the time comes for a new car. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

  4. Christ Walter 2024-10-03

With gas prices so high, you might want to consider the V4 instead. However, the V6 is still capable of keeping up with any domestic coupe. The ride quality is outstanding, and as always, the Accord is very reliable. If you get the recalled transmission fixed (which is free at Honda), the already smooth ride and performance will improve even more. This is actually my third Accord in a row, and I plan to keep getting them as long as they continue to impress me.

  5. Rosario Walker 2024-10-01

I've owned my coupe for about a year now, and I love it more every day. The car performs exceptionally well when pushed, yet remains calm and collected in most driving situations. Despite some minor squeaks and rattles that seem to travel around the interior, the car still feels very solid and well-made. In terms of reliability, the car has been rock solid. I don't drive it gently, but I do give it regular mechanical, interior, and exterior maintenance. By the way, if you're looking for some fun, switch off the traction control and go looking for some unsuspecting teenage Civic drivers (with the 10-inch diameter exhaust pipe).
