The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 1987 Honda Accord problems

The Honda Accord, produced in 1987, is known for its reliability and durability, but some common issues have been reported by owners. This article will discuss some of the most common problems with the 1987 Honda Accord, based on complaints from owners.

One of the most common problems with the 1987 Honda Accord is related to the ignition system. Some owners have reported that their cars suddenly cut off after running for about 8-10 minutes, and will not crank for about ten minutes. This issue is most likely caused by a faulty ignition module, also known as the "ignighter." The ignition module is responsible for generating the high voltage needed to fire the spark plugs. If it fails, the engine will not run, and the car will not start. The ignition module is usually located inside the distributor, but in some cases, it may be located outside. The primary wire from the coil leads to the ignition module, and it can be tested using a dwell/tachometer and a timing light.

Another common problem with the 1987 Honda Accord is related to the carburetor setup. Some owners have reported that their cars idle high on initial start, and if they let it sit long enough, several minutes, it will calm down. The car idles well and drives well when driving, but it has some very bad torque steer when it shifts, almost like a bad mount or something. When the car is shut off, it wants to continue to run/ sputter for about 10 seconds and dies. Initial start, low speeds, the car gets a terrible belt squeal. This issue is most likely caused by a faulty carburetor or a vacuum leak. The carburetor is responsible for mixing fuel and air in the correct ratio for the engine to run. If it is not working correctly, the engine may idle high, and the car may have torque steer when it shifts.

The 1987 Honda Accord also has issues with the fuel system. Some owners have reported that their cars have a terrible belt squeal at low speeds, and the car idles high on initial start. This issue is most likely caused by a faulty fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter. The fuel pump is responsible for delivering fuel to the engine, and if it is not working correctly, the engine may not get enough fuel, causing it to idle high and the car to have a belt squeal at low speeds.

Another common problem with the 1987 Honda Accord is related to the transmission. Some owners have reported that their cars have a hard time shifting, and the transmission slips and jerks. This issue is most likely caused by a faulty transmission or a worn-out clutch. The transmission is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the wheels, and if it is not working correctly, the car may have trouble shifting and the transmission may slip and jerk.

In conclusion, the 1987 Honda Accord is a reliable and durable car, but like any other vehicle, it has its share of common problems. The most common issues reported by owners include ignition system failures, carburetor problems, fuel system issues, and transmission problems. These issues can be addressed by regular maintenance and timely repairs, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-08-01
  • VIN: 1HGCA5642HA
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: THIS IS WITH REGARDS TO CAMPAIGNS 92V028000 AND 92V028001. BOTH CAMPAIGNS CALL FOR REPAIRS TO DAMAGED PART, BUT DON'T ADDRESS HOW LONG MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR REPAIRING SPECIFIC PART. IN THIS CASE IT IS THE FUEL FILLER TUBE AND BREATHER TUBE. HONDA OBVIOUSLY MUST HAVE CHANGED MANUFACTURING OR MATERIALS TO PREVENT FURTHER PROBLEMS, BUT THIS RECALL ONLY COVERS WHAT APPEARS TO BE A ONE TIME INSPECTION AND POSSIBLE REPAIR IF DAMAGE NOTICED. THE RECALLS ARE FROM 1992 AND 1993 FOR 1986 AND 1987 MODELS. PERSONALLY I HAVE A 1987 MODEL THAT NOW HAS 255,000 MILES. GRANTED, THIS VEHICLE IS OLD WITH HIGH MILEAGE, BUT A RECALL SUCH AS THIS SHOULD GO BEYOND A ONE TIME INSPECTION TO ADDRESS DEFECTIVE PARTS OR MANUFACTURING METHODS WITH A PERMANENT RESOLUTION. *JB

1987 Honda Accord recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 1987 Honda Accord.

1995-05-24
  • Manufacturer: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
  • Summary: THE FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLE RELEASE BUTTONS CAN BREAK. THESE RED PLASTIC RELEASE BUTTONS ARE MARKED "PRESS." IF A BUTTON BREAKS, PIECES CAN FALL INTO THE BUCKLE ASSEMBLY CAUSING THE BUCKLE TO OPERATE IMPROPERLY.
  • Consequence: THE SAFETY BELTS WOULD NOT PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION TO AN OCCUPANT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CHECK THE CONDITION AND OPERATION OF BOTH FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLES. CAREFULLY INSPECT THE RED RELEASE BUTTON FOR ANY BREAKS OR CRACKS. CHECK THAT BOTH BUCKLES ARE OPERATING PROPERLY BY INSERTING EACH LATCH PLATE INTO ITS BUCKLE, TUG ON THE BELT TO MAKE SURE THE LATCH IS SECURELY LOCKED, THEN PRESS THE RELEASE BUTTON. THE LATCH PLATE SHOULD POP OUT OF THE BUCKLE WHEN THE BUTTON IS PRESSED. IF EITHER RELEASE BUTTON SHOWS ANY SIGN OF BREAKAGE OR CRACKING, OR IF EITHER BUCKLE FAILS TO OPERATE PROPERLY, PROMPTLY CONTACT YOUR AUTHORIZED HONDA/ACURA DEALER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE BUCKLE REPLACED OR REPAIRED, FREE OF CHARGE. THE MANUFACTURER IS DEVELOPING A REMEDY DESIGNED TO PREVENT THE FAILURE OF THE BUTTONS THAT ARE NOT CURRENTLY BROKEN.

  • Manufacturer: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: IF THE PLASTIC COATING OF THE FUEL FILLER AND/OR BREATHER PIPE IS DAMAGED, SALT WATER MAY ACCUMULATE BETWEEN THE PLASTIC COATING AND THE STEEL PIPES, AND THE ACCUMULATION COULD CAUSE CORROSION WHICH WOULD EVENTUALLY RUST THROUGH THE AFFECTED PIPES, ALLOWING GASOLINE FUMES AND FUEL TO LEAK.
  • Consequence: GASOLINE FUMES AND/OR FUEL LEAKAGE THROUGH THE FILLER ORBREATHER PIPES COULD RESULT IN A FIRE WHEN EXPOSED TO A SOURCE OF IGNITION.
  • Remedy: REPAIRS WILL BE MADE TO VEHICLES WITH CORRODED FILLER OR BREATHER PIPES.
