The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

IN AN EMERGENT SITUATION, THE FIRST INCLINATION IS TO HIT THE MIDDLE OF THE STEERING WHEEL TO ACTIVATE THE HORN, NOT TO SEARCH FOR EITHER OF THE TWO LITTLE HORN BUTTONS. • Summary: I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THE 1992 HONDA ACCORD. I HAVE EXPERIENCED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON THIS VEHICLE THAT WILL GENERALLY REQUIRE OVERHAUL OR REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION. AFTER SEVERAL ON-LINE RESEARCHES ON HONDA ACCORDS 1990 TO DATE, I FIND NUMEROUS PROBLEMS, I.E., ACCELERATION FAILURE. WHEN ENGINE GETS HOT, THE CAR HAS ACCELERATION FAILURE. EVEN FURTHER RESEARCH REVEALS ?CERTIFIED TRANSMISSION MECHANICS REVEALED THAT THIS KNOWN PREMATURE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE IS DUE TO AN ENGINEERING DESIGN FLAW. IN ADDITION, ?THIS DESIGN FLAW CONSISTS OF THE HONDA ACCORD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION NOT HAVING OUTSIDE ACCESS TO THE METAL SCREEN INTERNAL TRANSMISSION FILTER WHICH BECOMES CLOGGED WITH GUNK AND METAL SHAVINGS, THUS STARVING THE TRANSMISSION, WHICH CAUSES OVERHEATING, AND FURTHER DETERIORATION AND PREMATURE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE.? THERE IS NO WAY TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE METAL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FILTER BECAUSE THERE IS NO TRANSMISSION PAN TO UNBOLT AND ALLOW ACCESS. COMPLETE DISASSEMBLE OF THE TRANSMISSION IS REQUIRED. THIS SERIOUS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM WILL BE REPORTED TO THE U.S. GOVERNMENT NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA) DECLARING THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD. *TR

  • Summary: THE LOCKING MECHANISM IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR ON MY 92 HONDA ACCORD IS BROKEN AND WILL NOT ALLOW THE DOOR TO OPEN FROM THE INSIDE OR THE OUTSIDE. I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SAFETY CONCERN. IN ORDER TO GET OUT OF MY CAR, I HAVE TO CRAWL/CLIMB TO THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR AND EXIT THE CAR THAT WAY. IF I NEEDED TO EXIT MY CAR IN AN EMERGENCY, SAY A FIRE IN MY CAR, IT WOULD TAKE ME MORE TIME TO GET INTO THE PASSENGER SEAT AND THEN EXIT THE CAR THAN IF I COULD JUST OPEN MY DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS MATTER AND CONSIDER THIS AS A RECALL. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND HAVE SEEN SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE. I CONTACTED HONDA ABOUT GETTING THIS REPAIRED AND IT WOULD COST $250+ FOR THE PART AND THEN LABOR WOULD BE $72 PER HOUR AND IT WOULD TAKE 2.5 HOURS TO FIX IT. THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE MY LOCAL TAXES. THIS MAY NOT SEEM LIKE IT IS TOO MUCH TO GET IT FIXED BUT FOR A GUY WITH A FAMILY OF 5 AND ONLY ONE INCOME, IT IS ALLOT OF MONEY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. *TR

A WEB SEARCH REVEALED THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS BY 1989 TO 1993 OWNERS OF THAT MODEL HONDA ACCORD WHO ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. IT IS SUPPOSEDLY A FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION COMPUTER. SEVERAL HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF THESE YEARS' MODELS WERE SOLD AND ARE ON THE ROAD. I recently purchased a 1992 Accord EX wagon with 155,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have had a few issues with it such as the master cylinder needing replacement for $200+, the CV joints needing replacement for $150 each, and the key lock causing the key to get stuck in the ignition for $100. Even after replacing the OEM CV joints, the left one went out after only 15,000 miles. Additionally, the timing belt must be replaced every 90,000 miles for $600. While I do like Hondas, I would recommend being cautious before making a purchase. On the other hand, I have also owned a Ford Crown Vic that has been going strong at 260,000 miles and has been relatively inexpensive to repair. It even gets 24 mpg on the road!

I'm so glad you had the chance to obtain a 1992 Honda Accord LX 4-door, with a 4 cyl. engine, 5 speed trans, even with 372,000 miles on it. Despite the harsh Wisconsin weather, snow and salt, it's still going strong with 400,000 miles on it! It's amazing that it has never failed you and you're still getting between 30-35 mpg. The interior is still comfortable and in good condition, with no cracks on the dash. It's no wonder that you wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if this one ever quits. It's a great car that puts a smile on your face every time you drive it.

We purchased our 1992 Honda Accord LX for $7,000 with 83,000 miles in clean condition about 6 years ago. Since then, we have spent around $3,000 on service and repairs, and the current mileage is 156,000 miles. The Accord has been a joy to ride in, especially for our short trips around town. Our experience with this car has been so positive that we plan to buy another one. We hope that Honda is listening.

I can totally relate to your love for the 1992 Accord! It was your second Honda and you had traded your CRX for it. Even with 100M miles on it, it still looked sharp. Although you got a 1998 to replace it, you still wish you had the 1992 back. While the 1998 is a great, quality car, it just doesn't hold the same affection for you. You mentioned that the 98 seems to have a noisy engine and air conditioning, and you personally did not like the body style as much. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

This car will run forever. I have 235,000 miles on mine. Although it has some nuisance items later in its life such as an oil leak and a main relay that causes problems starting the car in hot weather, overall, it is a great choice for frugal people who plan to keep their car for a long time. I have experienced extremely low maintenance costs and have really enjoyed owning this car.

This car is amazing! I'm at a loss for words. I've owned several cars in the past, but none of them compare to this one.
