1998 Honda Accord problems
The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.
Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.
In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.
In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

- Summary: Honda refuses to replace recalled airbags. I've been trying for a year and even when they "order" the part they don't have it when I arrive. This has happened repeatedly. I was in a car accident today and the airbags didn't deploy and they should have. After reading all the online complaints I feel lucky they didn't deploy and extract flying metal pieces. Its inexcusable to have a recall and then refuse to fix the problem. Honda's negligence could have cost me my life today. * (RECALL RELATED INCIDENT) TS

1998 Honda Accord recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 19 recalls for different components of the 1998 Honda Accord.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.

Hanles exceptionally well in the snow, we have two of these and we have never had any difficulty. Interior design is exceptional, large knobs and buttons are all at arms reach. Gas mileage is excellent, gets about 27 around town. The 4 cylinder is enough because this is a very light vehicle. Highly recommend.

I purchased the car with 34K miles on it, primarily for my outside sales job, where I need a reliable vehicle. Fortunately, I had the foresight to purchase a 100K mile warranty, which has been a lifesaver. Although I have experienced several recalls and had to replace the transmission, power steering pump, catalytic converter, and alternator, among other things, the warranty has helped me manage the costs. I am currently in the market for a new car, as I cannot afford to spend any more money on repairs or spend more time at the dealership. If you are considering purchasing this car, I highly recommend getting a 100K mile warranty to help with any potential repairs.

I bought this car last Friday because my last Accord had been wrecked and totaled out by the insurance. And so far, I absolutely love this car! It is much nicer than my previous car and has every possible option! It has an upgraded sound system, leather seats, automatic transmission, spoiler, chrome wheels, and more. It has been very well taken care of, and I would highly recommend this car to everyone!

The car has good acceleration and handling. Automatic gear changes are a little harsh. Cruise control acceleration has too much response. The driver seat comfort needs improvement. However, the car looks good and has never left me stranded. Despite a few issues with the ERG device clogging several times, which cost me, overall it's been a good car through 150,000 miles. There have been no recurring problems aside from the (3) ERG problems.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had a great ownership experience! It's wonderful to hear that you find the car to be very dependable and comfortable. While the sunroof may not be necessary, it's always a nice feature to have. The car's ergonomics are superb, which is definitely a plus. Thank you for sharing your positive experience and recommendation!

I purchased this car in the summer of 1998 because I drive a lot of miles. However, after about 2 years, I started experiencing issues with the oil. Despite taking it to several places, no one could figure out where the oil was going. Additionally, the 1998 and 1999 models have EGR problems, and unfortunately, Honda did not cover mine (or my Dad's 99) under the recall. They quoted me $400 for a replacement, but it turned out that an independent garage was able to clean it for only $65 and it's been working fine since. Another issue I've had is that the lights on my dashboard keep going out, making it difficult to see the clock, mileage, and half of my speedometer at night.

Your car has been amazing for you! You bought it in 2000 with only 24k miles and it has been a reliable companion ever since, with 153,000 miles on it now. The V6 engine is so much fun to drive and gives it a sporty feel. The only issue you've had is with the intake manifold clogging, which has caused the check engine light to come on. But don't worry, there have been Honda service bulletins on this. You've noticed that the front tires seem to wear out quickly, and Michelins can be expensive to replace. However, you plan on keeping this car until it becomes too expensive to fix because you've had such good luck with it. You've heard that some 1998-2002 Honda Accords had transmission problems, but fortunately, you haven't experienced any issues with yours.

Overall, you have a really nice car. It has great value, style, and provides a pleasant driving experience. The gas mileage is decent, ranging from 19-26 depending on your tires and driving style. However, it seems that you may have experienced some issues with the throttle body sticking, transmission shifting poorly, and the alternator and power lock dying at 72k. I hope that these issues have been resolved and that you are enjoying your car once again!

The automatic transmission was rebuilt at 95,350 miles. While I had high expectations for my Honda's reliability, I have unfortunately experienced repeated issues such as musty smells in the AC/heating system, occasional water leaks, and a leaking sunroof. In comparison, my previous Nissan had a much tighter fit and finish and served me better. As a result, I have decided not to purchase any more Hondas in the future.
