The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 1991 Honda Accord problems

The Honda Accord is a popular and reliable car, but like any vehicle, it can have certain common problems. Based on owner complaints and forum discussions, here are some common issues with the 1991 Honda Accord:

  • Stalling and Tachometer Jumping: This issue can be caused by ignition problems, such as worn-out plugs, plug wires, the coil, or the ignitor. If the distributor was recently replaced, it's possible that the new distributor is faulty. A good test for plug wires is to spray them with water from a spray bottle at night and look for sparks jumping from the wires. If there are any sparks, new wires are needed. If the wires are in good condition, plugs should be replaced with NGK OEM plugs. Checking for a Check Engine Light and extracting the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) can also provide valuable information.
  • CV Boot and Axle Problems: The CV (Constant Velocity) boot and axle are common failure points in the 1991 Honda Accord. The CV boot can crack, leading to the need for replacement. In some cases, the entire axle may need to be replaced if it has been damaged due to a lack of lubrication from the torn CV boot.
  • Brake Master Cylinder Failure: The brake master cylinder is another component that can fail in the 1991 Honda Accord. This can lead to issues with braking performance and may require replacement of the master cylinder.
  • Radiator Leaks: Radiator leaks are a common problem in the 1991 Honda Accord. These leaks can cause the car to overheat and may require replacement of the radiator.
  • Leaky Rack-and-Pinion: The rack-and-pinion steering system in the 1991 Honda Accord can develop leaks, which can lead to a loss of steering fluid and affect the car's handling. This may require replacement of the rack-and-pinion assembly.
  • Distributor O-Ring Leaks: The distributor O-ring can leak, causing a loss of engine oil and potentially leading to engine damage. This may require replacement of the distributor O-ring.
  • Balance Shaft Seal Walking: The balance shaft seals in the 1991 Honda Accord can "walk," leading to oil leaks. This may require replacement of the balance shaft seals.
  • Automatic Seatbelts Failing in "Open" Position: The automatic seatbelts in the 1991 Honda Accord can fail in the "open" position, which can be a safety concern. This may require replacement of the seatbelt mechanism.
  • Bad Clearcoat: The clearcoat on the 1991 Honda Accord can fail, leading to a faded or peeling paint job. This may require repainting the affected areas.

While these common problems can be frustrating for 1991 Honda Accord owners, many of these issues can be addressed with regular maintenance and timely repairs.

2020 and 2021 are also strong contenders but the used car price on these demand a premium. Honda Accords are known for their reliability and longevity. The best years for a used Honda Accord are 2006–2007, 2011–2012, 2015, 2020, and 2021.

Can a Honda Accord last 20 years?

Hondas are known to last 200,000 to 300,000 miles or 15-20 years. You need to properly maintain them to get this life expectancy from them, but it sets Hondas apart from the rest. It's also well-known that Honda Accords, and all Hondas, are durable and reliable.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-10-29
  • VIN: 1HGCB7667MA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: DRIVER'S SIDE SUN VISOR BECAME LOOSE AND NOW STAYS IN A DOWN POSITION AND SWINGS FREELY. WAS TOLD TO VISIT JUNK YARD TO FIND A FUNCTIONAL VISOR (WHOLE UNIT HAS TO BE REPLACED). THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED 5 YEARS AGO. THE WINDSHIELD SUN VISOR IS A BIG ISSUE SINCE IT OBSTRUCTS MY VISION (ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT) AND SINCE IT IS SO ANNOYING, I'VE REMOVED IT. NOW I HAVE SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERNS WHEN THE SUN IS SHINING BRIGHTLY DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME WHEN I'M DRIVING. APPROXIMATELY 8 YEARS AGO THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR SIDE WINDOW QUIT WORKING. I HAD THE MOTOR REPLACED, BUT IT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM - IT WON'T GO UP THE ENTIRE WAY. ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE - SIDE WINDOW STOPPED GOING DOWN ALL THE WAY. AGAIN, I HAD THE MOTOR REPLACED, BUT IT STILL WON'T GO DOWN WITHOUT HESITATION AND STOPS AT THE HALFWAY POINT. THE ENGINE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON PERMANENTLY APPROXIMATELY 7 YEARS AGO AND I'VE HAD 3 REPAIR SHOPS TELL ME THEY CANNOT GET IT TO TURN OFF. NOW I DON'T KNOW WHEN I'M HAVING AN ISSUE. CURRENTLY, I KEEP SMELLING A BURNING RUBBER SMELL, BUT NO ISSUES W/RADIATOR ARE PRESENT. NOT SURE IF THE 'CHECK ENGINE LIGHT' WOULD HAVE ALERTED ME TO A PROBLEM, BUT I DO COUNT ON MY INSTRUMENT PANEL WARNING LIGHTS TO WARN ME OF ISSUES I WOULDN'T BE AWARE OF SINCE I'M NO MECHANIC. I PURCHASED A HONDA DUE TO THEIR SAFETY RECORDS AND DURABILITY AND COUNTED ON KEEPING MY CAR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. I'M NOW HAVING TO RECONSIDER PURCHASING A CAR IN THE NEXT YEAR AND AS MUCH AS I WAS ABLE TO DEPEND ON MY HONDA, I'M STRONGLY CONSIDERING A DIFFERENT CAR MAKE (NOT A HONDA). *TR

This car just goes and goes...13 yrs old180M+ miles. Other than oil & filter changes, repairs have been limited to tires, timing belt (2), brakes (72M miles), muffler (1). Fuel mileage is 27 city and 34 highway. Spark plugs have been replaced once. The paint is in excellent shape and there is no rust!!!

  2. Lula Murphy 2024-11-27

I purchased this car brand new in 1991 and I absolutely love it! It has been the most reliable car ever. I have kept up with oil changes, replaced the timing belt, air conditioner, cv joint, and just recently replaced the alternator. I had it repainted, tinted the windshield, and replaced the hubcaps with new Honda ones. It's still a beauty and the shape is timeless. This car has 220,000 miles on it and I hope to see another 100,000 miles!

  3. Brent Rempel 2024-11-12

Your car has well over 230,000 miles on it, and I must say, it's impressive how well it performs. I find it hard to believe that any American car can match its reliability, performance, and looks. Your parents purchased the car new in 1991, and gave it to you 5 years ago on your 16th birthday. Even after all these years, it still performs flawlessly. The powertrain is unstoppable, the ride is refined and controlled even at illegal speeds, and the interior materials still look brand new. Although you had to replace the driver's interior door handle after it broke, it's no big woop. You're trying to run this thing into the ground so you can justify a new Accord, but the damn thing won't break!

  4. Daren Kuhic 2024-11-11

My grandparents bought this car in 1991, right off the lot on New Year's Eve. After they decided it was time to upgrade, they sold it to my Aunt, who then sold it to my parents for my sister's 16th birthday. They only wanted $1000, but my parents paid $1500. When my sister bought her own car, the Honda was passed on to me. It has 239,000 miles and was just beautifully repainted (the cost was almost as much as the car was worth). It has had a new transmission, A/C, and minor upgrades throughout the six years my parents have owned it. It has been very reliable, but the gas mileage isn't as good as other cars (I'm getting low to mid 20s, but I drive it hard).

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car that I bought back in 2005 for $2000. At first, I was a bit worried that I had overpaid for it, but over time, I changed my mind. Even after 160,000 miles, it still uses less than 1 Qt oil per oil change! Of course, there is some minor rust behind the rear wheels, but that's just a small issue. The best part is that it's super fun to drive and gets an impressive 35 MPG. Plus, it can easily pass people if need be. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable daily driver.
