The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 2020 Honda Accord problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Honda Accord 2020, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Transmission Issues:
    • Delayed shifting: Owners have experienced delays in shifting gears, leading to a jerky ride. This can be caused by low transmission fluid, a clogged transmission filter, or a malfunctioning shift solenoid.
    • Transmission slipping: Another common issue is slipping out of gear, resulting in a loss of power and acceleration. This can be due to a worn-out clutch, damaged torque converter, or low transmission fluid level.
    • Overheating: Overheating of the transmission system can occur when the fluid cannot cool down properly, potentially damaging the transmission. Causes include a clogged transmission cooler, low fluid level, or a malfunctioning cooling fan.
  2. Brake Problems:
    • Rapid brake pad wear and tear: Some owners have reported the need to replace brake pads as frequently as every 12,000 miles, which is more frequent than expected. This issue may be linked to the Electronic Brake Distribution system.
  3. Electrical Issues:
    • Wiring harness material: Honda uses a soy-based product for the wiring harness, which has led to concerns about rodent damage. Owners have reported issues with cable harnesses being chewed through, potentially due to the material used.
  4. General Reliability Concerns:
    • Recalls and repairs: Owners have expressed anxiety due to the frequency of recalls and repairs, including issues with the DC/DC module, tank, software updates, and A/C problems. Some have faced high repair costs and challenges with warranty coverage.

These problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt troubleshooting, and seeking professional help when needed to address issues effectively and maintain the Honda Accord 2020 in optimal condition.

No one was travelling in front of me and yet the brake suddenly engaged. The dealership rep. did not confirm the problem after driving it 5 minutes. There were no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms before the brake engaged in both instances.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-14
  • VIN: 1HGCV1E30LA
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: The 1st thing that happened was that all the components of ADAS stopped working in the spring of 2023. All the warning lights turned on in the middle of my commute home from work. It was very intimidating because I thought the car was going to stall in the middle of the highway, so pulled over to the side. I contacted Honda dealership and they were going to charge me to diagnose the problem. So I went to Autozone and it diagnosed my problem as "System too rich (Bank 1)". I went to an independent mechanic and they had the same warning on their machine as Autozone. They tried replacing an oxygen sensor, that did not work in getting rid of the problem with all my warning lights turning on. Again the ADAS component lights turned on and the system did not work. The next thing they did was replace 4 fuel injectors. I have not had any issues with my car since concerning this problem with fuel too rich.

Emmisions system warning, lane departure warning, cruise control warning, exc. Every single light never goes out. Just spent 6k on a car that had under 100,000 miles because I was told it was the transmission belt only to come home and have the exact issues happen. The day it was taken to the shop, it stalled in the road and almost caused an accident on a major highway. At this point, I'm afraid to drive it.

  • VIN: 1HGCV1F38LA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 10 months after purchasing my vehicle from the dealership, all lights illuminated on the dash, it goes through each warning every time you crank. This would not go away. I took it to the honda dealership during a recall and they said they could not find the problem. Suddenly this week, after owning this car for 2 years and being told the issue could not be found, and only 90,000 miles, the car made a sudden stop on the road almost causing an accident. The car would not move forward or reverse. We had to have it towed to a dealership and waiting to hear issue. This is an extreme hazard! And I may be stuck with a costly bill once again, with no resolution.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-18
  • VIN: 1HGCV1F16LA
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The automatic emergency braking system malfunctioned on 7/18/24. I was driving approx. 20 mph on a local road and there was no vehicle, pedestrian, or other object in front of the car when unexpectedly the orange warning to brake came on and an instant later the car braked on its own and came to a complete stop in the middle of the road. Given the sudden and forceful stop, I went forward into the seat belt. Fortunately, there was not a vehicle behind me as I would have been rear ended putting both me and the people in the other vehicle in danger. I reported the incident to the dealer using their online system (I wanted to do it in writing, but could not find a direct email address), but have not heard back from them yet.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-17
  • VIN: 1HGCV1F1XLA
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I was driving along the NJ Turnpike at approximately 65 miles an hour when the brake warning light started flickering on and off and then the brakes engaged. It was quick, as if I had stepped hard on the pedal. No vehicle was in front of me, but I was driving through the express EZ Pass lane. Later that same day, it happened again, but this time it was only as if someone tapped on the brakes. The brake light flashed then too. To answer the above questions: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The Collision Mitigation Braking System, and yes it is How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Someone could have rear-ended me Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The brake light warning flickered on before each instance

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-04
  • VIN: 1HGCV1F35LA
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: During medium acceleration the vehicle engine lost power and all the instrument panel warnings went off. Dealership said a blow head gasket. There are many threads online saying that there needs to be something done because the Honda 1.5 turbo motors are blowing head gaskets prematurely under 100k miles. Mine 2020 Accord has 108k and has been driven with care as I’m a middle aged male commuting to and from work with the car. Some sort of investigation needs to be done to show there is either a design flaw or a gasket flaw.

  • VIN: 1HGCV1F42LA
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The collision mitigation braking system periodically activates when traveling on interstate highway when there is nothing in the roadway to cause this function to activate, causing the vehicle to stop suddenly then release which have caused potential rear-end accidents and possible injury to the driver r passenger due to the sudden stopping motion which propel the driver and passenger forward quickly without any warnings. Recently an warning error appeared to verify this malfunction. Which before 6/30 the warning error never appeared.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-25
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 1HGCV1F52LA
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I was driving on a road that the car has been on hundreds of times. Flat, straight, dry road with no other cars around. The car all of a sudden braked very hard and the "BRAKE" light started flashing and beeping for about 3-4 seconds and then went off and then the brake fully released. It was like hitting an invisible wall and fighting to maintain control of the car at the same time. It came out of nowhere and was so shocking. There was nothing around me and no reason for the AEB system to be used. I can't tell you if my foot was pressing on the gas or had lifted to maintain speed. I do know that my foot was on or lifted above the gas pedal and nowhere near the brake. I am shocked it didn't cause an accident but I am guessing that is because I held tight to the steering wheel and possibly because there were no other cars around. I have severe whiplash, a major headache, backache and am very scared driving the car should it happen again. I have not gone to receive medical treatment yet but it is highly likely that I will need it. I will be contacting the dealership as well to discuss.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
  • VIN: 1HGCV2F92LA
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I am an 81 years old widow and am very afraid to drive my new 2020 Honda Accord. I am regularly experiencing an ongoing intermittent issue where my car stalls for no apparent reason. I've taken it to the Honda garage where I purchased it two times and no one seems to be able to satisfactorily address this concern. The first time I reported it to the shop (4/24/24), the technician didn't even pull it into the garage to investigate it. I assumed they would hook it to some diagnostic device and see if the cars computer would have some record of the fault. Instead, he jumped in, pushed some buttons relating to the lane keeping system (?) and claimed that would fix it, but it did not. I continue to experience the same problems. One example is when I take my car to the car wash, it stalls at the end and starts beeping. No matter what car wash I go to, it's the same awful experience, where they must shut down their equipment and come out to help me get the car restarted so as to get me out of the way and let everyone else out who are now stuck behind me (Very frightening and embarrassing). I've also had the car shut off after hitting some small potholes. It will shut down and requires a few attempts to get it restarted from the middle of the road!again - I then took it back to the Honda garage where I purchased it for a 2nd time (6/3/24) and for some other routine maintenance. This time they told me that maybe it was caused by my Toll-Road EZ-Pass which was mounted to my windshield near the rear view mirror. As you may imagine, I'm beginning to think the reason for the inability to address the issue is either intentional, incompetence, or perhaps I have a lemon..

The message to see the dealer was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the low-pressure fuel pump and a high-pressure fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was informed there was no recall coverage on the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure was like NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.

  • Summary: I've owned the car for over a year now, bought it for my daughter. 3 times the emergency braking system has gone off while driving for no reason. the last event happened while driving on a Hwy at 55 mph with no in front of her. FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
  • VIN: 1HGCV3F5XLA
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: On several occasions and almost never under similar circumstances, my entire Brake System suddenly shows there is a problem and flashes warnings on my dashboard - parking brake, power steering, vehicle stability assist, hill start assist, adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation, road departure systems - each systems shows there is a problem and says “see your dealer”. The first time it happened, I was driving on the interstate, and my only way of getting to safety was pulling off the road and trying to override the brakes manually to get my car to eventually stop. I had my car towed to the nearest Honda dealership the first and second times this happened. They assured me everything was fine or they would “restart my system”. The problem still exists, and it often leaves me stranded on the side of the road, in random parking lots, or just stuck at home unable to get to work.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-10
  • VIN: 1HGCV1F17LA
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On [XXX] I took my elderly mother to physical therapy and the car began to randomly brake although there were no vehicles in front of me. The braking light flashed and then car brakes on its own. A week later I was driving approximately 55 mph on a major highway and the car started braking again but without the warning light. Again, there were no cars anywhere around me. The next day I went to the Honda dealership in Covington, LA because I am very concerned this will happen again unexpectedly when there are cars around me and it will result in a bad accident injuring myself or others. I was told he can keep my car all day but he said they probably could not recreate the issue so its just a waste of time. He said nothing he can do about it. That's just how it is and maybe it was from a bug passing the sensor. I know have to remember to turn off the feature every time I drive because I am terrified that it will randomly brake again and it may cause a serious accident. Negative 2020 Honda Accord car reviews

As a previous Honda owner, I have unfortunately experienced some issues with my car. Since the early stages of driving, I have noticed some juddering and slipping underneath. Despite bringing it to the dealer, I have received unsatisfactory responses and excuses. Additionally, I have had difficulty getting in touch with Honda corporate. It is important to note that lease transfers are not allowed. I would advise caution when considering a Honda purchase. Thank you for taking the time to read my experience.

Yes, I bought it new. I'm currently experiencing some steering wheel issues after driving it for 15,000 miles. Unfortunately, the dealership hasn't been able to identify the issue with the car yet. They've suggested a few fixes, but we're still back to the drawing board. It's frustrating to spend money on a process of elimination, but I'm hopeful we can find a solution soon.

As an automobile enthusiast who has predominantly owned and driven German cars, I have high standards when it comes to vehicles. However, after experiencing multiple accidents in my BMW 750Li Msport, I decided to try out the New Accord for its gas mileage and styling. Unfortunately, I have found this car to be lacking in many areas. The road noise is excessive, the tires are of poor quality, and there have been multiple software issues. The stereo system is unimpressive and lacks depth. I expected better quality from Honda, especially since it was named Motor Trend Car of the Year. Perhaps the issues I have experienced are specific to the 'Sport' model, as I know the 2.0T model comes with Michelin tires. The Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth system can be unreliable, and the adaptive cruise control has failed on multiple occasions. The CVT transmission is soft and vague, and the paddle shifts are not up to par. The interior carpet and floor mats are of low quality, and the tires need to be recalled. Despite these issues, the gas mileage is impressive, and the car is attractive. However, these are the only two pros of this car.I have driven solid German-made vehicles all my life, and I can confidently say that they are the quietest, firmest, most solid, and quality-built machines. However, I must admit that my review may not be the most suitable for this car, as I am comparing it to the flagships of other makers, which may not be entirely fair. It seems that the 2014 Accord LX V6, which my girlfriend drives, is a much better driving vehicle with a solid ride. I am not sure what happened to this version of the Accord. Perhaps they were trying to beat the price point of the Camry?

I recently purchased a brand new 2020 Honda Accord. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. It has been in for service multiple times, starting from June all the way until December. Despite the issues with grinding, pumping, and swaying, the dealer has not been able to fix it and corporate (American Honda) has not been helpful in resolving the issue or offering a buyback. This has been a frustrating experience, especially since I have had great experiences with Honda in the past. I would recommend considering other options, such as Toyota, which has a better reputation and fewer sensor failures. This is just my personal experience, but I hope it helps others make an informed decision.

I really enjoy the way the car drives. The four-cylinder 1.5L engine sounds and feels smooth, almost like a six-cylinder engine. While it may not be as fast as a six-cylinder, it's still plenty fast. I personally prefer the CVT over the automatic, despite what other reviewers may say. It provides a smooth acceleration from a stop and there are no shifts, which makes it feel like an electric car. However, the interior noise is a bit of a letdown. There is some tire and wind noise on the highway, as well as some rattles caused by manufacturer defects. Unfortunately, one of the rattles is coming from the driver's seatbelt assembly on the b-pillar, right next to my left ear. It's not the best location for a rattle and it can be quite distracting. The first dealer I went to didn't fix the problem, and the second dealer was dismissive of me and the issue. It was frustrating to have to wait three weeks for an appointment after they diagnosed the problem. The customer service I received from these two dealerships made me realize that I should have gone with a Lexus instead. If you're considering a Lexus ES, I highly recommend it. While it may not be as nimble as the Accord, it has better build quality and much better customer service.

Positive 2020 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Lemuel Schulist 2024-11-23

You've had this car for three years now and put about 60,000 miles on it. It sounds like you do a lot of driving both for work and road trips. Overall, it's great to hear that this is the best car you've driven! It's impressive that most high tech comes standard, and the engineering is reliable. The cabin sounds extremely comfortable, and the trunk space is huge. The sporty look is a nice touch, and it's amazing that you average about 34 mpg without being in economy mode. When you turn that on, you average around 42 mpg - that's fantastic! Your family has bought Accords for years now, and it's wonderful to hear that this 2020 model exceeds all your (already high) expectations. If anyone is thinking of getting one, they shouldn't hesitate!

The moment I first saw this car, I fell in love. It's beautiful, drives great, and is spacious for my family. We are thrilled with our purchase!

  3. Dion Koch 2024-10-27

Hi there! I noticed that the front seat could use some more cushion support. Also, it would be great if both front seats had the same seat controls as the driver's seat. What do you think?

  4. Nathaniel Lueilwitz 2024-10-24

Took 3 weeks to find a dealership that could get it when I wanted with everything I wanted. It's driving like a dream! I'm really impressed with the Nav system, which now has the capability to sync with the Waze GPS app through the downloaded Android Auto App. The only thing I miss is the automatic telescoping steering wheel my Lexus had, but overall it's still a great car!!! The turbo engine is really nice and powerful.

You're going to love this car! It has amazing technology and the ride is incredibly smooth.
