The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1997-11-20
  • VIN: 1HGCD5535TA
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL 1996 HONDA ACCORD LX VIN # [XXX] MY VEHICLE IS A 1996 HONDA ACCORD LX AND IS NOT AMONG THOSE RECALLED. IT DOES HAVE A TAKATA AIRBAG: PASSENGER SIDE. TAKATA PART #06780-SV1-A82ZB. I BELIEVE THE CAR MAY ALSO HAVE A TAKATA AIRBAG ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, BUT HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO OBTAIN THAT INFO CONCLUSIVELY. I HAVE READ THE EXPERT REPORT ABOUT THE CAUSE(S) OF THE TAKATA AIRBAG MALFUNCTIONS. HTTP://WPDOWN1.COM/DOC/PDF/DOWNLOAD/WWW__SAFERCAR__GOV--RS--TAKATA--PDFS--EXPERT_REPORT-HRBLOMQUIST.PDF IT IS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING TO BE UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHY MY VEHICLE IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. NHTSA REPRESENTATIVES (888-327-4236) HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE ANY INFORMATION. NEITHER HAS HONDA. HONDA'S MAIN CUSTOMER SERVICE # 800-999-1009 REPRESENTATIVES LOOKED UP MY VIN # AND FOUND NOTHING THERE ABOUT AIRBAG MANUFACTURER. THEY CLAIM NO TAKATA AIRBAGS WERE INSTALLED BY HONDA PRIOR TO YEAR 2000. OTHER HONDA DEALER REPRESENTATIVELY RECORDS DEMONSTRATE OTHERWISE AND PROVIDED THE PART # FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG (LISTED ABOVE). (ALSO VARIOUS WEB PAGES INDICATE THAT HONDA BEGAN USING TAKATA AIRBAGS IN THE EARLY 1990'S.) MY VEHICLE IS IN TOP CONDITION, HAS FEWER THAN 50,000 MILES, NEW PAINT, NEW OTHER THINGS SO I AM RELUCTANT TO STOP DRIVING IT - AT LEAST UNTIL I CAN DETERMINE 1. WHETHER MY VEHICLE HAS ONE OR TWO TAKATA AIRBAGS. (HONDA REPS ARE CONTRADICTORY AND CONFUSED ABOUT THIS.) 2. WHY MY VEHICLE (WITH AT LEAST ONE TAKATA AIRBAG) IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. 3. WHAT MY OPTIONS ARE. (I WOULD HOPE THAT SINCE 1996 VEHICLES ARE APPARENTLY NOT REQUIRED BY LAW TO HAVE AIRBAGS, ONE OPTION AVAILABLE TO ME WOULD BE TO JUST HAVE THE AIRBAGS REMOVED.) IF YOU COULD ANSWER ANY OR ALL OF THE ABOVE QUESTIONS, PARTICULARLY QUESTIONS 1 AND 2 - OR DIRECT ME TO SOMEONE WHO CAN, I WOULD VERY MUCH APPRECIATE IT. THANK YOU. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-02-23
  • VIN: 1HGCD5627TA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1996 HONDA ACCORD WHICH WAS SUDDENLY STALLING WITH ALL THE POWER DOWN FOR FEW MINUTES. AFTER FEW TESTS MY MECHANIC SAID THE PROBLEM IS WITH IGNITION KEY SWITCH. AFTER SPENDING $600 PLUS THE PROBLEM STOPPED. AFTER RESEARCHING I FOUND OUT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE SAME PROBLEM BUT FOR MODEL YEAR 1997 ONWARDS FOR THE SAME CAR. AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH I FOUND THAT THERE WERE LOT OF PEOPLE ON THE MODEL YEAR 1996 WHO COMPLAINED ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM BUT WHOSE CAR WERE NOT RECALLED AND FIXED BY HONDA. SO I THINK HONDA SHOULD ALL INCLUDE THE MODEL YEAR 1996 FOR RECALL OR REIMBURSE PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF WHO HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND WHOSE CAR WERE NOT RECALLED AND WHO ENDED UP SPENDING HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. HONDA SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED MODEL YEAR 1996 ALONG WITH OTHER YEAR FOR RECALL.

Negative 1996 Honda Accord car reviews

The car is very reliable, but repairing little things like the windshield wiper motor can be expensive (around $400).

  2. Trace Ebert 2024-05-11

This car is really attractive and requires regular maintenance. Although the body is quite heavy for the engine, it still manages to get the job done. Additionally, it has a spacious trunk that can accommodate large speakers. Car enthusiasts will appreciate this car as it requires hands-on attention. It is important to keep up with the alignment, spark plugs, brakes, and other maintenance tasks.

There was a recall on the engine but I caught it before the recall. Messy. Jammed door lock because of bad actuator (250.00). Front driver window worn out and jammed (250.00). The 1st recall I got was about the electrical wire harness. Also caught it before the recall. Sigh. Two months ago, the engine leaked oil (400.00). The gasket needed to be replaced. I needed to pay first for the two recalls but reimbursed later. Hassle. The 2nd recall fiasco cost 800.00 because the timing belt was damaged ...

I bought my wagon with 93,000 miles on it and have since put on another 35,000. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any problems with it, and it continues to be a dependable, versatile, and fun-to-drive vehicle. I've used it as a truck, kid bus, business car, and errand car, and it has taken everything I've thrown at it. It gets good mileage, has good performance, and has a solid structure (still no rattles!). Overall, it's hard to beat!

Your grandpa took great care of this car, doing all routine maintenance at home. It has endured harsh winters of below 0F at 8,000ft and now lives with me in the scorching summer heat of 120F+. With 208k miles on it, it still runs smoothly thanks to all the maintenance done at home. The only issue was a failed transmission just two weeks ago, but this car has been super reliable and has been on many long road trips, up mountain roads, through the woods, and even through rivers! It has been treated like a truck and has NEVER broken down for any reason until now. It's definitely worth the money to rebuild the transmission. I would highly recommend this car to anyone. Just treat her right and she'll do the same.

I bought the car for $600, but it had bad rotors, brakes, front tires, and a cracked radiator. After fixing everything, it has been somewhat reliable. However, a year later, I had to have the head gasket resurfaced. The mechanic informed me that the 96+ years have a problem with the head gasket, which cost me another $1200. Recently, the car has been losing radiator fluid, but the lines and hoses are new and the radiator is sealed up tight. Unfortunately, the problem remains unresolved. Whenever I top off the fluid and park it after a drive, it overflows or dumps about 1/3 of the fluid on the street. This only happens once, and I wish I had bought a Tacoma instead. I probably got one of the few lemon Accords.

This car is amazing! I purchased it with 100,000 miles on the clock and it has been a dream to drive ever since. It starts up every time, runs smoothly, accelerates quickly, and is incredibly reliable. It handles great in the snow and responds quickly to steering. While some of its accessories may be a bit questionable, all the doors lock and windows work perfectly. Overall, it's a fantastic little car that's perfect for my needs. And let's not forget its awesome gas mileage, even 14 years later! I will always be a Honda fan because of this car. The Japanese really know how to make great cars.

I hope this message finds you well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I purchased it brand new 8 years ago and it has been a reliable vehicle for my family. Recently, at around 102,000 miles, it developed a major oil leak due to a broken seal. However, besides that, it has only required routine maintenance and it now has 106k miles. Overall, it has served us well!
