The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 2006 Honda Accord problems

The Honda Accord is known for its reliability, but certain model years have been reported to have common problems. The 2003-2007 Honda Accord models, in particular, have had several issues that owners have reported.

  • Ignition Switch: The ignition switch is another common problem for the 2003-2007 Honda Accord models. If the ignition switch goes bad, the vehicle won't start .
  • Door Latch Actuators: Door latch actuators are another issue for the 2003-2007 Honda Accord models. The doors may not lock or unlock, and sometimes they may lock and unlock on their own. The problems are often intermittent, and the latch actuator is attached to the lock latch assembly but is sold separately .
  • Taillights: The taillights are another problem for the 2003-2007 Honda Accord models. On the backside of the taillight, there is a gasket. If that gasket gets brittle, water can enter the taillight, and the tail light needs to be replaced .
  • Engine Mounts: The engine mounts are another issue for the 2003-2007 Honda Accord models. Excessive vibration while idling at a stoplight could be due to the engine mounts. The engine mounts are located at the front, bottom, and back of the engine and under the airbox. Over time, these mounts can get brittle and need to be replaced .
  • Automatic Transmission: Harsh shifting and a check engine light with the engine light flashing could be due to dirty transmission fluid or low transmission fluid. If that's not the case, it could be internal transmission failure, which needs to be addressed .

When buying a used Honda Accord, it's essential to be aware of these common problems and look for them during the inspection. Checking the engine oil level, watching out for a noisy power steering pump or timing chain, and making sure the stereo and heater control lights are working are all essential steps to take when inspecting a used Honda Accord. It's also a good idea to have the car inspected by an independent mechanic before buying it.

In summary, the 2003-2007 Honda Accord models have several common problems, including transmission failure, ignition switch issues, door latch actuator problems, taillight issues, engine mount problems, and automatic transmission problems. Being aware of these issues and checking for them during an inspection can help ensure that the car is in good condition before buying it.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
  • VIN: 1HGCM56816A
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: While driving down street, both curtain airbags deployed sporadically with absolutely no cause. I was not hit anywhere and I was not even using my brakes or slowing to a stop. My head got smashed in and my view was completely obstructed. I was able to pull off road to safety.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-08
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1HGCM72646A
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I was ran off the road by another driver on March 8, 2024. I honked so that they would know I was there and then swerved as they continued to come towards me. As this happened, I lost control of my vehicle and it fishtailed on the highway, doing a complete 180° and going from 70 mph to 0 mph as I crashed into a concrete barrier on the shoulder of the road. The airbags did not deploy. My car will likely be totaled and because of its age, we will not keep it. It will not be available for inspection. My safety was put as risk because my airbags did not deploy. Thankfully, in this instance, I was not harmed but I could’ve been. The problem was not confirmed by the dealer. The vehicle was inspected by police and is currently undergoing inspection by insurance. There were no warning signs of this failure.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-07
  • VIN: 1HGCM56876A
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: While driving home from work at highway speeds in less than 1 minute I went from Total normal Driving Experience to feeling like I had a vibration likely a flat. Luckily it was the back tire so I was able to safely steer off the highway. Upon inspecting the tire it was completely gone! Only minimal sidewall attached to the rim on both inside and outside of the wheel. The sidewall failed approximately 1 in Above the Rim lip. All the way around on both sides. This is on a general gmax as-05 215/50/ ZR 17 purchased in 2021 from tirerack.com. these tires are used seasonally in addition to winter tires so they have minimal miles for being a little over 2 years old. I also recently had the car New York State inspected in the last 30 days. upon reaching out to Tire Rack I learned there was a substantial recall of almost 100,000 continental and general brand tires that were " over cured". This tire is not on the list but did exactly what the description of the recalled tires had done. I do not feel safe traveling on the remaining tires and I feel other people could be in danger of this happening to this model Tire. I just want to keep myself and other safe and feel like I'm going to get stonewalled with a retailer on warranty. Also want to keep others from potential harm as this had happened on my front wheel in the middle of rush hour traffic it could have been disastrous and deadly! Up until this I loved these tires they were sporty, great handling, quiet and wearing very evenly and seem to be long-lasting so far. I hope Continental/general does the right thing by adding this tire to the recall list. Also this car was recently New York State inspected less than 30 days ago there is ample tread and the tires have been diligently rotated and they are only on the car for 7 months at a time as I have a set of General winter tires that I switch between seasonally.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-18
  • VIN: 1HGCM56706A
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: The AC DELCO brake pads were reported to be designed for use on the front calipers of a 2006 Honda Accord. While performing a routine brake caliper cleaning and inspection, I observed that the friction material completely separated from the metal backing plate on the passenger outboard brake pad. Additionally, an area near the top portion of the friction material cracked, forming an approximate one inch vertical tear through the pad. The crack was missing approximately 4 to 5 millimeters of friction material across horizontally (i.e., it was possible to look through it). Separation of the friction material from the backing plate appeared to be partially from corrosion/rust that was able to occur behind the friction material; between it and the metal backing plate. The two points at which protrusions from the friction material attached to the backing plate experienced shear and were completely severed. This resulted in diminished braking capacity and may have contributed to a minor accident as the car was not braking as effectively or responsively as usual.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-11
  • VIN: 1HGCM56486A
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: The left passenger seatbelt will not retract - supposed to be a lifetime warranty and as a result airbag indicator light is on, so I take it to the dealer and they tell me seatbelts are on back order and they said it could be months or even years before I get a seatbelt and there is no ETA for it to arrive. So now, I have to drive the vehicle with no seatbelt and non-working airbags risking tickets or worse loss of life. This is unacceptable. What is the point of a lifetime warranty .

STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-08
  • VIN: 1HGCM56386A
  • Components: STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Clicking in steering wheel, and steering wheel very stiff. Not sure if it's the flex coupler or something else. Has been ongoing for probably 2 or 3 years. Also headliner is falling, has been lifting for a couple of years but now it's to the point where I'm afraid it'll fall on my head and block my vision while driving. This is a common issue with these older hondas Headliner needs a recall/warranty extension from the manufacturer. The flex coupler if that is the issue needs a recall or warranty extension as well. Kia has done this for their older specific vehicles with this flex coupler issue (my other car which had the same problem)

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-13
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JHMCM56116C
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The 2006 Honda Accord VP Sedan was hit in an intersection by a Van that was trying to speed through a red light. The van hit the Accord on the front of the car, which spun the Accord causing it to hit the van again in the rear passenger side. The Accord has 6 airbags, but none of them went off. It appears that the front airbags should have went off, and possibly the passenger side airbags. I contacted Honda about the issue, but they insisted that I follow the direction that the insurance company determined.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-10-11
  • VIN: 1HGCM56316A
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The passenger air bag indicator light stays illuminated. The car has been taken to several different mechanics who temporarily are able to make the light go away but that say that this is an issue they have seen with different 2006 Honda Accords and the it is a defective factory sensor. Tony Honda in Oahu HI has said that because they do not show a recall for this vehicle, it would be an out of pocket cost. It seems that this is a safety issue because it is unsure whether there is a problem with the airbag itself and not just the sensor. Please advise

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-05-01
  • VIN: 1HGCM66566A
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I recently learned of the NHTSA's complaint section and is the reason in the delay in reporting this incident: Front Driveshaft Breakage/Failure On May 1, 2014, the Front Left Driveshaft/CV Axle Broke on my 2006 Honda Accord EX V6 4-Door. This vehicle had 177,694 miles at the time of incident. The car was stopped at an intersection waiting to make a left-hand turn. After the traffic light turned green, the car just started rolling when the driveshaft snapped/broke. On May 2, 2014, this vehicle was towed, and my Auto Technician was stunned to see the axle/driveshaft had broken. He stated that driveshafts are, typically, made of hardened steel and should never break. He also mentioned that if this break would’ve occurred at expressway speeds (the majority of my driving is at expressway speeds), this would’ve been catastrophic. Clearly, this is a Major Safety Issue. This vehicle is still in service and currently has 315,000 miles. At the current mileage, I am quite concerned that the Replacement Honda Driveshaft (Front Left) and the Original Front Right Driveshaft may also break; quite possibly, at high speeds. A search of the various Honda Forums reveals that this breakage/failure is a common problem with Honda Driveshafts. Recently, Honda recalled some vehicles for this Driveshaft Breakage Problem. My vehicle was not included in the recall.

  • Summary: While exiting a grocery store parking lot the honda accord 2006 air bags malfunctioned and deployed. The honda accord 2006 'did not' strike a vehicle, a vehicle 'did not' strike the honda accord 2006, the honda accord 2006 'did not' strike any object in the parking lot, no object in the parking lot caused any friction with the honda accord 2006 to make the air bags deploy. After reviewing the damages which occurred from the deployment of the air bags; the driver's air bag is hanging out, the passenger's air bag is hanging out, the dome lights have been knocked down from the ceiling, the wind shield has 4 cracks in it. At this time myself and the passenger are noticing a ringing in our ears. I myself have a tiny split in my lower lip. When the incident took place an individual came to the honda accord 2006 to ask if things were ok. The individual states, "I heard a pop!! So I came to check things out." Today is 4/3/2022, the incident took place around 3pm. With today being sunday honda is closed. No call was able to be made to ask questions or file a report.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-13
  • VIN: 1hgcm66586a
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My car is leaking power steering fluid somewhere. I can fill it to the recommended line, drive 10 minutes down the road and start having problems turning again. It is worse when turning slowly like when backing out of a parking spot and then turning the wheel to be able to accelerate in the correct direction. I have also noticed smoke coming from my car if I am sitting in park after putting fluid in, it is worse if I have my heat on. I am currently pregnant and this is my only form of transportation to be able to get my son to and from school and myself to work and every where else I have to drive to. I have almost hit parked cars because I can't get the steering wheel to turn. I am afraid that I will be driving down the road and end up not being able to turn into a curve in the road or something and end up rolling/wrecking my car. I am afraid that my car could catch on fire while I am waiting in the pickup line for my son which would put other parents, children, and other cars at risk. Yes the problem has been confirmed. The vehicle has not been inspected. No warning lamps or anything. I have been dealing with this for almost 3 months. It is causing pain in my neck, back, arms, and shoulders.

The affected vehicles received a replacement driver air bag inflator as part of a previous Takata inflator recall remedy or a replacement driver air bag module containing the same inflator type as a service part. Due to a manufacturing error, in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver frontal air bag, these inflators may explode.

  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began April 10, 2019. Honda owners may contact customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is O41. Acura owners may contact customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Acura's number for this recall is U40.

  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2001-2007 Accord, 2001-2005 Civic, 2001-2004 Honda Civic GX, 2003-2005 Honda Civic Hybrid, 2002-2006 CR-V, 2003-2011 Element, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2003-2008 Pilot, 2006 Ridgeline, 2003 Acura 3.2CL, 2003-2006 Acura MDX, and 2002-2003 Acura 3.2TL vehicles. The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion and other factors, including manufacturing variability that, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 1, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-800-382-2238, select option 4. Note: Vehicles that have had their driver frontal air bag replaced previously as part of a recall remedy prior to September 12, 2014 need to have their air bag replaced under this recall as well. Vehicles that, on or after September 12, 2014, received a remedy for a prior driver frontal air bag inflator recall already received an inflator of a different design, and therefore are not included in this recall and do not require additional servicing. Note: This recall fully supersedes recalls 08V-593, 09V-259, 10V-041, 11V-260, 14V-351 and 15V-153. Honda's numbers for this recall are JQ9, JR0, JR1, JR2, JR3, JR4, JR5, JR6, JR7, and JR8.

  • Manufacturer: HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)
  • Components: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS
  • Summary: Honda is recalling certain model year 2007 and 2008 Acura TL and model year 2003-2007 Accord V6 vehicles. In May 2012, Honda filed a defect report to recall certain model year 2007 and 2008 Acura TL vehicles. In September 2012, Honda informed the agency that it was including an additional 573,147 vehicles including certain model year 2003 through 2007 Accord V6 vehicles. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 625,762. Prolonged under-hood and power steering fluid temperatures may cause the power steering hose to deteriorate prematurely, resulting in cracks and power steering fluid leakage.
  • Consequence: If this occurs, power steering fluid can leak onto a hot catalytic converter, leading to smoke and possibly an under-hood fire.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will install a new heat resistant power steering hose, free of charge. The original recall began in June 2012, and owners of those vehicles may obtain the free remedy. Sufficient parts are not yet available for owners of the vehicles covered by the September 2012 expansion, but are expected to be available in early 2013. Honda will notify owners of these vehicles beginning on October 26, 2012, and will notify these owners again when parts are available so those vehicles can be brought to dealers for applications of the free remedy. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009.

Negative 2006 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Americo Buckridge 2024-07-29

The car I purchased for $30,000 has been experiencing power loss and running rough in cold weather, specifically around 20 degrees or less, which is unacceptable. Despite Honda replacing a module, the issue persists, indicating a lack of knowledge on their part. I am reaching out to other Accord Hybrid owners who may have experienced this issue and found a solution. While these cars may be rare, I am hopeful that someone can offer some advice. It is important to note that there have been some problems with this Hybrid, and I would advise anyone considering it to wait. Thank you, Wyatt.

You can expect to get over 400,000 miles out of this car if it is properly maintained. According to carcomplaints.com (https://www.carcomplaints.com/Honda/Accord/2006/), it has received 'The Seal of Pretty Good'. One of the big pros of the 4 cylinder models is that they have a timing chain instead of a belt. The only con is that there is no auxiliary jack. The body style may be considered bland compared to other years, but you can set yours apart with an optional spoiler. The chassis, drivability, and a few features of the '06 Accord are much more reminiscent of my '94 Acura Legend than my 3 previous Accords. While the '06 model is known to have some engine issues at 160k, they can be successfully worked around.

Positive 2006 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Derek Boyle 2025-01-04

Congratulations on your second Honda! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your new car and that it handles much better than your previous one. The 2.4 i v-tec engine is definitely a plus, providing better fuel efficiency and quicker acceleration. Although your car may not have all the bells and whistles, it's great to hear that it does what it's supposed to do well. I understand your concern about the transmission, but with proper care and following the service manual, I'm sure it will last you a long time. Thank you for sharing your positive experience and recommendation!

  2. Antwan Abernathy 2024-11-23

I love my car! It was a surprise gift from my husband after we bought a pick-up truck. We've had it for 2.5 years and it's been a reliable companion, with almost 100,000 miles on the clock and no major repairs needed. I've only had to replace the brakes once, as well as a set of tires, a battery, and regular oil changes. The only issue is the wipers, which bang loudly and need a new motor that costs around $300. But that's a small price to pay for such a great car. As a die-hard Camry driver, I never thought I'd say this, but I would definitely buy another Honda Accord!

  3. Kayden Rolfson 2024-11-10

This is the best car I have ever owned in 50 years. So good, in fact, that I just purchased another new one after driving for 248,500 miles. I'm still able to get 29-30 mpg on the highway. I wasn't really ready to part with it, but I wanted the latest in technology, safety, and creature features.

  4. Lew Johnson 2024-10-10

I've owned over 10 Honda/Acuras for more than 30 years. My 2006 Accord is my favorite, ranking #1 or #2. Even my 1996 Accord with 215k miles still runs great. I'm pleasantly surprised by the power and fuel efficiency of my 2006 model. I consistently average 25mpg around town with my 2.4 (4-cylinder) 2006. On the highway, I average 34mpg while cruising at 75-80mph. My highway mileage varies from 33mpg (lowest) to 38mpg (highest). I appreciate Honda's engineering, quality, and the fact that it's made in the U.S.A.!

  5. Javon Borer 2024-10-08

I'm so glad to hear that you love your Honda Accord! It sounds like it has been a reliable and enjoyable car for you, which is always great to hear. I can understand how it might be tough to consider selling it, especially since it has served you so well. It's wonderful that you were able to purchase it with a warranty, even if you didn't end up needing it. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice with your Honda Accord!
