1988 Honda Accord problems
The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.
Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.
In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.
In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 1988 Honda Accord problems
The Honda Accord, produced since 1976, has been a popular choice for many car buyers due to its reliability and performance. However, like any other vehicle, the 1988 Honda Accord has faced several common problems based on complaints from its owners.
- Transmission Shifting Issues: Some 1988 Honda Accord models might experience shifting issues, where the warning lights, such as the check engine light and D4, start to flicker, and the car might shift hard. This issue could be due to a mechanical problem with the transmission or a dirty transmission fluid or a malfunctioning sensor. A thorough evaluation using specialized testing equipment is necessary before the repair.
- Power Door Locks Malfunction: The power door locks on the 1988 Honda Accord might sometimes trigger automatically due to a problem with the door lock actuator. The failure of the power door actuator might be indicated by symptoms such as the doors failing to lock or open or locking themselves. The door actuator must be changed as soon as the mechanic determines there is a problem with it.
- Fuel Troubles: The 1988 Honda Accord might face fuel troubles, such as vapor lock, which occurs when the gas boils and prevents the car from running. This problem can be caused by issues with the fuel pump, filter, or lines. A fuel pressure test is recommended to diagnose the problem. Additionally, the fuel tank vent problem or a faulty fuel pump might also cause similar symptoms.
In conclusion, while the 1988 Honda Accord has faced several common problems based on complaints from its owners, these issues can be resolved with proper maintenance and repairs. Regular check-ups and timely replacement of worn-out parts can ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-24
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: THE TIRE EXPERIENCED TREAD SEPARATION RESULTING IN A LARGE BLISTER ON THE TREAD FACE. I DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM ASS REPAIRING A FLAT TIRE ON ANOTHER WHEEL OF MY DAUGHTER'S CAR. THIS FAILURE WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE WE HAVE HAD WITH THE FIRESTONE NAMEBRAND. ANOTHER DAUGHTER HAD SIMILAR FAILURES ON BRAND NEW TIRES PURCHASED FROM FIRESTONE ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASSIONS OVER A 4 MONTH PERIOD. THESE FAILURES WERE ON 16" WHEELS ON A 1997 DODGE AVENGER. THE INCIDENTS TOOK PLACE BEFORE THE WELL PUBLICIZED CURRENT RECALL INVOLVING THE SIZE THAT FITS THE FORD EXPLORER. SHE HAS SINCE SOLD THAT VEHICLE SO I AM NOT ABLE TO AD SPECIFICS CONCERNING THOSE INCIDENTS. BUT, DUE TO THE NUMBER OF FAILURES WE HAD INVOLVING FAMILY MEMBERS AND THE SEVERITY OF THE SAFETY CONSEQUENCES INVOLVING DIFFERENT SIZE TIRES THAT MAY NOT CURRENTLY BE IN THE RECALL, I FEEL IT ESSENTIAL TO CALL THIS TO YOUR ATTENTION. I DO HAVE DIGITAL PICTURES OF THIS MOST RECENT FAILURE I COULD PROVIDE IF YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC ADDRESS I COULD E-MAIL THEM TO. OF COURSE, I HAVE POSSESSION OF THE TIRE AND WOULD BE HAPPY TO PROVIDE IT TO YOU FOR ANALYSIS IF IT WOULD AID YOUR INVESTIGATION INTO THESE FAILURES. WE DO NOT HAVE THE ORIGINAL RECEIPT FOR THE TIRES WHICH MAY BE 18 MONTHS OLD (ESTIMATED). WE WERE TOLD WHEN WE CONTACTED A LOCAL DEALER THAT SINCE WE LACKED THAT, THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THERE ARE 3 OTHER FIRESTONE AFFINITY TIRES ON THAT CAR. I'M SURE YOU CAN APPRECIATE THE INSECURITY I HAVE WITH THOSE REMAINING ON HER CAR THOUGH REPLACEMENT IS NOT AN INEXPENSIVE CONSIDERATION. I WILL WRITE FIRESTONE AT THEIR WEBSITE (ASSUMING THEY HAVE ONE) AFTER I HEAR FROM YOU. I AM CONTACTING YOU BECAUSE OF THE SERIOUS SAFETY CONSEQUENCES OF THIS PROBLEM THAT HAS NOT BEEN ISOLATED FOR US. I WOULD LIKE TO THINK SOMETHING CAN BE DONE BEFORE PEOPLE LOOSE LIVES USING A PRODUCT THEY HAVE MISPLACED CONFIDENCE IN. AN ALTERNATIVE NUMBER TO REACH ME DURING THE DAY IS MY CELL PHONE (225)907-5911. I AM RETIRED SO THESE NUMBERS SHOULD. *AK

THE OWNER INFORMED ME IT WAS THE FUEL INJECTORS. I DID NOT CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP. I HAD THE FUEL INJECTORS REPLACED WITH NEW ONES. THE OWNER INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THE CAR WITH THE INJECTORS LEAKING. HE ALSO STATED THAT VERY RARILY DO THEY REPLACE FUEL INJECTORS. HE SAID THEY SELDOM LEAK OR NEED REPAIR. I ASSUMED IT WAS DUE TO THE AGE OF THE CAR, BUT HE DID NOT FEEL LIKE THIS WAS TRUE. WITH HIS COMMENTS, I FELT LIKE MAYBE THERE WAS A DEFECT. AFTER HIS COMMENTS ON HOW DANGEROUS IT WAS TO DRIVE THE CAR, THIS CERTAINLY SEEMED LIKE A SAFETY HAZARD.*AK
