The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 2014 Honda Accord problems

The 2014 Honda Accord has been reported to have several common problems, primarily concerning the ignition switch, driveshaft, battery sensor, and connecting rods.

  1. Ignition Switch: The ignition switch is the most complained about issue with the 2014 Accord, accounting for at least half of the over 700 complaints listed on the NHTSA. Owners find that it takes several attempts to start their Accord, often blaming the starter or battery instead. The problem affects all types of Accords, regardless of engine, trim, or transmission. The repair cost is approximately $200, making it a relatively inexpensive fix.
  2. Driveshaft: The driveshafts found on Accords with Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs) are prone to corrosion due to poor protection. This can lead to the driveshaft breaking, causing the vehicle to lose acceleration and potentially roll away if parked on a grade. Honda recalled over 235,000 Accords made between 2013 and 2015 to inspect and replace the driveshafts if necessary.
  3. Battery Sensor: A faulty battery sensor found on non-hybrid Accords allows moisture in, which can lead to a short or even a vehicle fire. Honda recalled over 1.1-million Accords in 2017 to replace the old sensor with a new water-tight one.
  4. Connecting Rods: In early 2015, Honda found that a few connecting rods on some vehicles, including the 2014 Honda Accord, were improperly torqued from the factory. This issue has been fixed for all identified vehicles, but it highlights the potential for uncommon, yet significant problems with the 2014 Accord.

In summary, the 2014 Honda Accord has several common issues, primarily concerning the ignition switch, driveshaft, battery sensor, and connecting rods. However, most of these problems have been fixed through recalls or repairs, making the 2014 Accord a potentially good used car buy for those willing to address the lingering ignition switch issue.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: 1HGCR2F83EA
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: While driving, the Electric Power Steering system stopped working and the EPS warning light came on. I had to forcefully steer the car to the shoulder with great difficulty and shut the car off. I sat on the shoulder for approximately 10 minutes, restarted the car, noted the steering appeared to be functioning properly and began to continue home only to have the same issue again within 2 minutes of pulling away from the shoulder of the road. I managed to forcibly steer the car back onto the shoulder of the road and called for a tow truck to take it to a shop and the family home. The ship advised there was no fault code found with their system tools and that the issue may be with the electronics on the car needing to be reviewed/updated/replaced by Honda. It is my understanding this is not an isolated incident and could have resulted in a major crash had I not utilized my training as a police officer and accident reconstruction s[pecialist with the PD to recognize the issue and manage to keep the car safely in control until safely stopped.

  • Summary: My 2014 Honda has been have 2 major issues over the life of the vehicle. 1. VTC Actuator - prior to the oil indicator light coming on and the time to change the oil, my car screams out a loud consistent noise. I have reported this concern to Team Honda in Baton Rouge on numerous occasions. The most recent repost was on [XXX]. I am concerned my engine will fail or explode. 2. Tires Light Indicator (See Pictures) My tires were check on [XXX] and I spent almost $300 on a new tire. The same light which were on on that day came back on. All 4 of my tires were checked out and 3 out of 4 of them were in good condition. This has also been an ongoing issue. The tire light random come on, then the other 5 (all related) flashed an the dashboard. My first time experiencing this was less than a month after getting my vehicle but the tires was still covered under warranty at that time. By these lights coming on during non-emergencies, the consumer can not identify when the vehicle actually needed to be serviced. Both has been ongoing and reported for years and fed up with these issues. I am surprised they have not issued a recall yet! Thanks for reading this and I look forward to hearing from a Honda representative very soon. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
  • VIN: 1HGCR2F81EA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: In 2020, there was a recall (#20V769) on the driveshaft of the 2014 Honda Accord. The car was in the Midwest for 4 years, so I was concerned that the issue with corrosion could directly impact the vehicle due to weather conditions. I went to have the recall serviced, but still noticed the car to be sluggish upon shifting in to gear. I reported the concern to the Honda dealer to see if it was repaired correctly and to understand why it took time for the car to "switch" in to gear. After review, they said nothing was wrong with the car. I continued to have these issues, however every time I went to the Honda service team to get an oil repair the diagnosis report did not show any issues with the transmission. There was a recommendation to get the transmission oil changed, which I did in March 2023. The car will still sluggish after this service. On July 25, 2024 the cars transmission/ drive power disengaged in the middle of a busy road. The car came to a complete stop while moving. The gear shaft failed to engage with the transmission. Prior to this no transmission warning had ever triggered, nor reported by Honda's diagnosis reports. I again stated my concern that the driver shaft may not have been repaired correctly to Honda. They instead faulted that the wrong transmission fluid caused " Transmission is burnt up causing issue of not moving. Tech found transmission has wrong fluid installed which caused internal wear and failure of transmission parts." This statement is false. The car stopped on July 25. In an effort to problem solve the transmission fluid was drained and the incorrect fluid was used, but that was after the car was not shifting, so if the transmission was in fact burnt from the wrong fluid it was a result of the service in 2023. However, that is not the cause of the issue. I believe that failure to repair the drive shaft correct resulted in effects on the transmission that were either intentionally omitted or were not discovered.

  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine short block, free of charge. The recall began on March 27, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is JP2 (for Accord models) and JP3 (for CR-V models).

Negative 2014 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Lavern O'Conner 2025-09-18

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2014 Honda Accord V6 EX-L w/Navi that I bought new from Anderson Honda, Palo Alto back in June 2014. I've been a loyal Honda owner since 1992 and this was my very first new car purchase (at age 43). I've always appreciated Honda's reputation for reliability, having worked at a dealership during my college years and seeing first-hand how consistent their vehicles were. However, I've had some issues with this particular car. At 47,000 miles, it needed a new starter and battery replacement, which was a bit of a disappointment. Additionally, I've found the Navi system to be sub par and the XM radio to be a bit frustrating to use. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the quality of Honda vehicles and will definitely consider them when purchasing my next car. Thanks for listening!

  2. Jon Hickle 2025-07-05

I test drove an EX CVT and an EXL V6 back to back before purchasing the EXL V6. I found that the EX interior was not as nice as my 2011 EX interior, it was very plain and lacked wood trim. Additionally, while the CVT does a great job and is generally unnoticeable, I did notice that it revs up and hangs at high rpm when more power is needed. These factors were important to me, so I ultimately decided to go with the EX-L V6, which provided a completely different driving experience.

  3. Jedidiah Lynch 2025-07-05

This car drives nicely, although the suspension is a little stiff. However, it more than makes up for it in handling. The fuel economy is also great, with an average of 37 MPG when setting the cruise at 75 on the highway, which I think is fantastic! On the downside, after approximately 25,000 miles, the driver's seat looks like it has 100,000 miles on it :( Additionally, the Pandora app can be a bit of a hassle. One stereo was replaced, but the new one is also troublesome. It freezes like a computer, disconnects during phone calls, and often requires either shutting off the car or turning off Bluetooth and turning it back on to get the features to work. It's definitely less hands-free than I had hoped. However, overall, I still think it's a great car!

While I appreciate your interest in the 2014 Honda Accord, I would suggest considering other options. Unfortunately, I have experienced some safety and reliability issues with this model. Despite contacting AAA for jumpstarts on multiple occasions, the dealer has not been able to identify any problems. However, I recently had to replace the starter at a cost of over $800, despite the manufacturer's repeated assurances that there was no issue. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision.

Although my car isn't bad, I've had some issues with it that have been frustrating. Unfortunately, shortly after the basic warranty expired, I began having trouble with the rear door actuator. Honda quoted me over $300 to replace it, which seems quite expensive. I've owned other cars with power doors, such as Mazda, Toyota, and Nissan, and never had so many problems. Looking back, I wish I had spent the extra $500 and bought a Toyota Camry instead. Consumer Reports rates Toyotas as excellent, while Hondas are only average. As the saying goes, 'you get what you pay for.' It's also disappointing that Honda doesn't stand behind their product. The actuator issue isn't new, and they even settled a class action suit for millions of dollars. Although it was on a different Honda vehicle, I'm sure the parts are made by the same manufacturer. Unfortunately, two more actuators have failed, and Honda won't acknowledge the problem.

Congratulations on your 5th Accord purchase! I hope you're enjoying your new EX-L coupe with Navigation. The 9th generation Accord is quite different from the 8th generation model, with many exciting changes. For example, the electric steering and new strut-based suspension are just a few of the updates that make this Accord stand out. Additionally, the CVT transmission and direct injection system are impressive features that really set this car apart. Despite all of these changes, the Accord still manages to retain the most beloved attributes that have made it a fan favorite since its introduction in 1976.

I rent all makes and models of cars for work as I travel quite a bit. I don't work for or have any affiliation with any car brand. In my experience, the Accord (I have a 2014 EXL) stands out in the mid-size category due to its exceptional build quality, engine design, ride, and comfort. It's clear that Honda has put extra engineering thought into their top-selling car, making it a favorite among many. While it's true that there are many Accords on the road, this is a testament to its well-designed features.

Back in May 2014, I got my first Honda and I was absolutely fascinated by all the new features it had. I was expecting to be disappointed by the EPA mileage, but this car has exceeded all my expectations. Out of the four vehicles we have at home, this is the newest and most expensive one, but our insurance company priced it the best, thanks to features like the forward collision warning, blind spot camera, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. In my opinion, the features and cost of this car are even better than those of a Lexus that I compared it to. It performs really well and does so quietly.

I think you'll find that your new Honda is very reliable, spacious, fast, and stylish.

I was considering purchasing the Accord coupe, but I found that the Sport offered so much more for the price. If Honda were to offer the Sport in the coupe, I would have chosen it instead. The 2.4 engine is one of the best 4-cylinder engines available. Despite its size, it is not underpowered. I purchased this car new from a high-volume dealer that offered the best pricing in the state. For the price, nothing else comes close. After driving it for 6000 miles, I find myself liking it more every time I drive it. I chose the CVT over the manual because I didn't want to shift gears for the next ten years. In terms of performance reviews for this class, Honda comes out on top. Many reviewers prefer the $6000 more expensive Mazda 6 over the Honda. Update: 27000 miles later and I have no regrets. I have achieved as high as 39 mpg, which is rare for a car of this size. It is still fun to drive, and when I put it on cruise control down the freeway, it is so smooth and refined. This is not a track car, but it drives sporty in a nice way. The CVT transmission has operated flawlessly, and I use the paddle shifters to quickly downshift. It amazes me that it's an economical 4-cylinder engine for the power it makes. I still admire how the car looks and how roomy it is. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but it has what most people would need and want. There are no rattles or weird noises, and it still drives like the first day, but without the new car smell. This is a nice car, and I look forward to driving it for many more years. I change the oil earlier than what the indicator says, about every 5000 miles, even though the indicator says I could go for 8000-9000 miles. This is a very good car. Update: 35,000 miles. I'm not sure, but I think at times the car is getting faster. I still love this car and think that the value is excellent. The new Sports are even better, but it is essentially the same car. Update: 42,000 miles. I have had no problems with the car. It drives like new, and I still feel the same way about everything I said previously.I got caught in a 1 foot snow dump, but my car got me home safely despite the original tires. Thanks to my knowledge of driving in snow, I was able to handle the worst conditions with ease. I was amazed by how well the car performed and would definitely buy it again without a second thought. The gas mileage is fantastic and I didn't have to sacrifice anything to get such great economy. I had a great experience at multiple Honda dealerships. Update: At 50,000 miles, the car still runs like new and I haven't had a single problem with it. I'm having new tires installed next week, even though my Honda dealership said it wasn't necessary. I'm amazed at the fuel economy and great handling of this car and have no regrets at all. I plan on getting a CR-V in about 4 years from now. Update: At 63,000 miles, I had a rear oxygen go out, but it was a quick and easy $400 fix. Other than that, nothing else has gone wrong with this car. It drives like new and performs great with fantastic gas mileage. The paint chips fairly easily on the front hood area, but overall, I really like the car and think it is worth every penny I paid for it. Update: At 68,000 miles, the car still runs great and I'm still amazed at the fuel mileage and engine performance for a 4 cylinder. The car feels safe and handles well. I plan on keeping this car for many more years and hopefully can get over 250,000 miles without any major issues. I am very pleased with buying this car new and still have no regrets. The Honda dealerships that I have taken this car to for service have been a very good experience. I sure like the new 2L turbo, but trading in a perfectly good car that I like would not be a smart buy at this time. The more I drive this car, the cheaper it costs to own. At 74,000 miles, I still think this car is great. Fuel consumption ranges from 30-38 MPG. It runs flawlessly, still handles very competently, and stops better than one would expect.I have owned this car since new and have only had to replace a few parts, including new tires at 50,000 miles, an oxygen sensor at 60,000 miles, and a new battery at 55,000 miles. Besides regular maintenance, I have had no issues with the car. I still enjoy driving it every day and have no regrets about buying it new. I change the oil regularly and keep up with maintenance to ensure it runs smoothly. Although there are some road chips on the hood, the car still looks upscale and well-maintained. The paddle shifters are a fun feature to use at stop lights, and the V-tech engine is impressive. With 83,000 miles, the car still runs and drives like new, making it a comfortable and enjoyable ride. It's a great car for commuting and family trips, and I highly recommend the 2014 Honda Accord. I recently replaced the front pads myself when the original pads had about 20% left, and it was an easy task. I still enjoy driving this car, and it's great on long trips and zippy around town. With snow tires, I can even drive it to the ski slopes. I recently took a long trip and averaged 38 MPG, and I have no regrets about my purchase. At about 93,000 miles, I drove to Seattle and back and averaged 41 MPG. The car is still running smoothly with no issues. I replaced the rear pads before the trip. It's amazing how fuel-efficient this car is considering its size and comfort. I'm already on my second oil change for the CVT, which I believe is crucial for its longevity.
