The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 2014 Honda Accord problems

The 2014 Honda Accord has been reported to have several common problems, primarily concerning the ignition switch, driveshaft, battery sensor, and connecting rods.

  1. Ignition Switch: The ignition switch is the most complained about issue with the 2014 Accord, accounting for at least half of the over 700 complaints listed on the NHTSA. Owners find that it takes several attempts to start their Accord, often blaming the starter or battery instead. The problem affects all types of Accords, regardless of engine, trim, or transmission. The repair cost is approximately $200, making it a relatively inexpensive fix.
  2. Driveshaft: The driveshafts found on Accords with Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs) are prone to corrosion due to poor protection. This can lead to the driveshaft breaking, causing the vehicle to lose acceleration and potentially roll away if parked on a grade. Honda recalled over 235,000 Accords made between 2013 and 2015 to inspect and replace the driveshafts if necessary.
  3. Battery Sensor: A faulty battery sensor found on non-hybrid Accords allows moisture in, which can lead to a short or even a vehicle fire. Honda recalled over 1.1-million Accords in 2017 to replace the old sensor with a new water-tight one.
  4. Connecting Rods: In early 2015, Honda found that a few connecting rods on some vehicles, including the 2014 Honda Accord, were improperly torqued from the factory. This issue has been fixed for all identified vehicles, but it highlights the potential for uncommon, yet significant problems with the 2014 Accord.

In summary, the 2014 Honda Accord has several common issues, primarily concerning the ignition switch, driveshaft, battery sensor, and connecting rods. However, most of these problems have been fixed through recalls or repairs, making the 2014 Accord a potentially good used car buy for those willing to address the lingering ignition switch issue.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: 1HGCR2F83EA
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: While driving, the Electric Power Steering system stopped working and the EPS warning light came on. I had to forcefully steer the car to the shoulder with great difficulty and shut the car off. I sat on the shoulder for approximately 10 minutes, restarted the car, noted the steering appeared to be functioning properly and began to continue home only to have the same issue again within 2 minutes of pulling away from the shoulder of the road. I managed to forcibly steer the car back onto the shoulder of the road and called for a tow truck to take it to a shop and the family home. The ship advised there was no fault code found with their system tools and that the issue may be with the electronics on the car needing to be reviewed/updated/replaced by Honda. It is my understanding this is not an isolated incident and could have resulted in a major crash had I not utilized my training as a police officer and accident reconstruction s[pecialist with the PD to recognize the issue and manage to keep the car safely in control until safely stopped.

  • Summary: My 2014 Honda has been have 2 major issues over the life of the vehicle. 1. VTC Actuator - prior to the oil indicator light coming on and the time to change the oil, my car screams out a loud consistent noise. I have reported this concern to Team Honda in Baton Rouge on numerous occasions. The most recent repost was on [XXX]. I am concerned my engine will fail or explode. 2. Tires Light Indicator (See Pictures) My tires were check on [XXX] and I spent almost $300 on a new tire. The same light which were on on that day came back on. All 4 of my tires were checked out and 3 out of 4 of them were in good condition. This has also been an ongoing issue. The tire light random come on, then the other 5 (all related) flashed an the dashboard. My first time experiencing this was less than a month after getting my vehicle but the tires was still covered under warranty at that time. By these lights coming on during non-emergencies, the consumer can not identify when the vehicle actually needed to be serviced. Both has been ongoing and reported for years and fed up with these issues. I am surprised they have not issued a recall yet! Thanks for reading this and I look forward to hearing from a Honda representative very soon. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
  • VIN: 1HGCR2F81EA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: In 2020, there was a recall (#20V769) on the driveshaft of the 2014 Honda Accord. The car was in the Midwest for 4 years, so I was concerned that the issue with corrosion could directly impact the vehicle due to weather conditions. I went to have the recall serviced, but still noticed the car to be sluggish upon shifting in to gear. I reported the concern to the Honda dealer to see if it was repaired correctly and to understand why it took time for the car to "switch" in to gear. After review, they said nothing was wrong with the car. I continued to have these issues, however every time I went to the Honda service team to get an oil repair the diagnosis report did not show any issues with the transmission. There was a recommendation to get the transmission oil changed, which I did in March 2023. The car will still sluggish after this service. On July 25, 2024 the cars transmission/ drive power disengaged in the middle of a busy road. The car came to a complete stop while moving. The gear shaft failed to engage with the transmission. Prior to this no transmission warning had ever triggered, nor reported by Honda's diagnosis reports. I again stated my concern that the driver shaft may not have been repaired correctly to Honda. They instead faulted that the wrong transmission fluid caused " Transmission is burnt up causing issue of not moving. Tech found transmission has wrong fluid installed which caused internal wear and failure of transmission parts." This statement is false. The car stopped on July 25. In an effort to problem solve the transmission fluid was drained and the incorrect fluid was used, but that was after the car was not shifting, so if the transmission was in fact burnt from the wrong fluid it was a result of the service in 2023. However, that is not the cause of the issue. I believe that failure to repair the drive shaft correct resulted in effects on the transmission that were either intentionally omitted or were not discovered.

  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the engine short block, free of charge. The recall began on March 27, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is JP2 (for Accord models) and JP3 (for CR-V models).

Negative 2014 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Armand Leannon 2024-10-03

Your warranty expires at 75,000 miles. Unfortunately, at 78,000 miles, my car started burning oil. There was no indicator or warning light to tell me that my engine had no oil in it, so I started it up not knowing there was basically no oil in it and it cranked hard. Now, it burns oil at about a quart a week. I am disappointed that my car has become worthless, but I hope to find a solution soon.

  2. Manuel Pfannerstill 2024-09-21

The CVT transmission on my 2014 Accord failed catastrophically when the car was 6 weeks out of warranty with 37,000 miles on it. Despite being serviced by the dealership and driven sensibly, American Honda refused to provide any assistance or stand by their product. After researching online and speaking with local transmission shops, I discovered that there are numerous issues with the CVT. Unfortunately, the only option when it fails is to replace the entire thing, which cost me $5200 for a reconditioned CVT. As a long-time Honda customer, I was disappointed by this quality failure and the company's lack of concern. I gave three stars only because the rest of the vehicle appears to be solid. However, I will not be purchasing another vehicle with a CVT transmission.

  3. Dedrick Witting 2024-06-16

I've been an owner of many Honda's and Acura's over the years, including an 83 hatch accord, 88 integra, 90 accord, 94 & 95 civic coupe, 2000 accord, and 2001 mdx. These cars have been owned by myself and my family, and we've had pretty good experiences with them. We've never had any engine or transmission issues, and ABS issues have been rare. However, we recently had an ABS issue with our 2014 accord at 80k miles, which we just got fixed at the dealer for $1.7k. We tried to bring it to non-dealer shops to reduce the cost, but they said only a Honda dealer could repair it. Overall, I'm a bit disappointed and doubtful that I will ever own another Honda again. They just don't seem to be the same anymore. However, this is just my personal opinion based on my experience. Before you consider buying a Honda, maybe the new ones are better? Who knows, maybe the 2020+ models are worth considering.

I purchased my 2014 Accord 2.4 EX-L a month and a half ago. During my initial attempt to take a road test with my out-of-state driver's license, I was denied due to my recent move to Georgia. Despite this initial setback, I found the car to be of good quality upon receiving it. However, after three weeks, I began experiencing issues with the Forward Collision Warning system, which would randomly activate despite no obstacles being present. I took the car to Honda Service four times to address this issue, but they were unable to find any problems. Despite their efforts, the issue persisted and they were unable to provide a solution. Additionally, I have experienced some noise from the windows. Despite these issues, I remain confident in the overall quality of the vehicle.

I don't usually write negative reviews, but while researching an issue with my 2014 Honda Accord Sport, I came across Dan's review here on Edmunds about the same car. He was going through the same issue as me, and it was a relief to know that I wasn't alone. It's important for all Honda owners to be aware of this issue. Unfortunately, Honda doesn't seem to stand behind their product, which is disappointing. Like Dan, I started experiencing issues with my car when it had 15,000 miles on it. I heard a roaring noise from the back tires and took it to the dealership. They assured me that there was nothing wrong with my car and suggested I replace the tires. I always do my regular service on time. Like Dan, I also took my car to different mechanics, but they all told me it would be a waste of time and money. I replaced all four tires anyway. Fast forward to now, my car has 40,000 miles on it, and all four tires are cupped again. I regret not getting rid of the car then and investing all that money in new tires. The Honda dealer told me that the tires are too soft and I need to get another pair of a different brand, which will solve the problem. This will be the last Honda I ever buy. It's disappointing that Honda doesn't stand behind their product.

Your car has been incredibly reliable and has driven well for an impressive 121 months and 313K miles. You have taken excellent care of it, changing the oil 53 times with full synthetic OW20 oil, changing the transmission fluid 9 times every 35K, changing the coolant 4 times, the brake fluid 2 times, and the spark plugs twice. You have also changed the serpentine belt twice and the brakes twice. Additionally, you have changed the air filters about once every 18 months. Although you have had to replace one wheel bearing and one tire speed sensor, the car has been a great investment overall. The blue tooth system reliability has been a B, but the comfortable ride for both front and back seats and the well-functioning cruise control make up for it. You have had no issues with the AC, power windows, water pump, power steering, radiator, blower fans, exhaust train, etc. The only minor issue you have experienced is that the black paint on the steering wheel radio/cruise buttons fades away, but you have found that touching it up with acrylic paint does the trick. Overall, you are very satisfied with your car and plan to run it until it dies.

Congratulations on your new car! It's always exciting to find a great deal. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it so far. It sounds like you have a lot of experience with different cars, so it means a lot that you think this is one of the best. It's great to hear that the Electronic Stability Control worked well for you during the snow storm. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

This car is fantastic! I have had no issues with it so far, except for changing the oil and transmission fluid. The sound system could use some improvement, but I have noticed that the EX-L model has a pretty good sound system. Unfortunately, the speakers are not great in any model, and the EX-L sounds particularly bad. Bluetooth sounds a little better, but it's not worth the money. The engine and transmission have been excellent so far, with no oil consumption (fingers crossed). The brakes could use a little work, but I'm planning on upgrading to a more performance style brake with more 'bite.' The car is super quiet on the inside and very comfortable. Although my back and legs get tired on long road trips, it's perfect for driving around town. I'm hoping to get at least 200k miles out of the car without any major problems. UPDATE (3/16/21): I wrote the first review a while ago, but honestly, nothing has changed with the car. It's currently sitting at 82k miles and I have not had a single issue with it. There's still zero oil consumption, with oil changes every 6k miles, and the transmission is in excellent condition with fluid changes every 25k miles. I achieved my personal best for MPG at 37.7 mpg along a 300 mile roundtrip ranging between 75 and 80 mph. As for the audio and speakers, they're not bad. The radio is pretty bad, but Bluetooth does not sound bad at all. The infotainment system sometimes acts up, but it's not bad to live with, as it does not do it all the time and has done it since the car was purchased. I'm not too sure why there are so many complaints about oil consumption with this car, as I own two of these vehicles and not one burns oil. Just make a habit of checking your oil often before you drive with low oil unnoticed and then complain the car burns oil thereafter. Update (3/17/23): I still have very few complaints with this car.Hi there! I wanted to share some information about my car with you. It has 113,000 miles on it and I'm happy to say that it still doesn't burn any oil! Around 90k miles, I did some maintenance work myself and replaced the valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals. It was actually pretty easy, so anyone with basic knowledge can do it too. I also changed the timing chain tensioner because it was making a lot of noise. I found a helpful TSB from Honda online and it worked like a charm. That was 30k miles ago and there's been no noise since. I did notice that my rear main seal is starting to leak a bit, so I have to add about a half quart of oil every 5k miles, but it's not too bad. I'm still averaging about 35 mpg, which is great for a car with this many miles. Just a friendly reminder to check your oil regularly, as it's really important. If it runs low once, it will most likely start burning oil after that. This is especially true for newer cars with low tension rings. Luckily, my car doesn't burn any oil at all, even with the mileage. So, don't let your oil run low, EVER! Take care.

You've done your research and considered a range of options including the Mazda6, Accord, TLX, Camry and Fusion. After ruling out the last two for styling and reliability reasons respectively, you found that the Mazda6 was the front runner based on reviews and the desire for something unique. However, after test driving all three, you found that the Honda Accord surprised you with its smooth and quiet ride. While the Mazda6 was a popular choice, the reliability and overall feel of the Honda Accord ultimately won you over.
