The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common Honda Accord 2008 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2008 Honda Accord, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Brake Pad Wear and Caliper Issues:
    • One of the most prevalent issues with the 2008 Honda Accord involves premature brake pad wear, particularly affecting the rear pads. This problem has led to class-action lawsuits due to the pads wearing out much faster than expected.
    • Additionally, after reaching 100,000 miles, the rear brake calipers on these Accords can seize in place or start leaking, causing potential braking issues.
  2. Excessive Oil Consumption:
    • Another common problem reported by owners is excessive oil consumption as the vehicle ages. This issue can impact both the four-cylinder and V6 engines of the 2008 Accord, requiring owners to monitor oil levels more frequently.
  3. Crankshaft Position Sensor Failure:
    • Owners have experienced problems with the crankshaft position sensor, which is crucial for the engine's operation. When this sensor fails, it can lead to misfires, intermittent engine cut-outs, or starting issues. Replacing the sensor is relatively inexpensive, but it requires an engine relearn procedure.
  4. Alternator Malfunction:
    • The alternator in the 2008 Honda Accord has been a common point of failure. Symptoms of alternator issues include premature battery discharge, stalling while driving, and the battery warning light illuminating on the dashboard. If the alternator fails to charge the battery, it can lead to a dead battery and subsequent starting problems.
  5. Blower Motor Defects:
    • The blower motor, responsible for pushing air through the HVAC system, has been reported to malfunction in some 2008 Honda Accords. Signs of a faulty blower motor include loud noises during operation or a complete failure to push air through the vents. Replacing the blower motor involves accessing it under the glove box on the passenger side.

These common problems with the 2008 Honda Accord highlight areas where owners may encounter issues and need to address them promptly to ensure the continued reliability and performance of their vehicles.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-19
  • VIN: 1HGCP36848A
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Very, very common issue on 8th generation AND 9th generation Honda Accords (as well as other Honda models from this era). ABS modules throw solenoid codes (usually consisting of VSA, ABS, traction control, and parking brake lights on the gauge cluster). Sure, the vehicle's ABS may still operate, however this is still a problem and generally not safe. My 2008 Accord EX-L V6 w/ Nav recently had this problem and I have resolved it by swapping over a used part. Honda wants to charge $2500 on average for both the part and labor. What the problem is, is that the circuit board in these modules have been using the wrong gauge of wire according to many mechanics. According to my mechanic, this thing can be triggered with something as simple as an automated car wash. Honda generally makes great, mostly reliable vehicles that are fun to drive. It's a shame that these modules have not been engineered correctly. I hope that the NHTSA can take initiative and force Honda to do a recall on these Aisin modules and fit the cars with better engineered ones. Brakes are an ABSOLUTE NECESSITY in cars and it is IMPERATIVE to have a reliable ABS system. Again, this is a widespread issue and hopefully can be resolved by the NHTSA, working with Honda. Thank you.

The director called ke in for a meeting with the mechanic and from what they are saying because No one has given me anything in writing, I was told to be careful driving and every week My coolant should be topped off. They did say the coolant is leaking into my engine. I got a 3rd opinion and honda ahould have goven me a detailed description of the diagnosis. The sales department is bothering me about buying my car, I told them NO, I need my cat I cant afford another vehicle. My gut is telling me Honda has done thia to my engine thinking I will have to buy another Vehicle. Please Help Me get a proper diagnosis and I need to know how this issue was caused? • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Acura TSX, 2011 TSX Wagon, 2010-2011 Acura ZDX, 2008-2011 Honda Accord, 2010-2011 Accord Crosstour, 2006-2011 Civic, Civic Hybrid, and Civic GX, 2007-2011 CR-V, 2010-2011 FCX Clarity and Insight, and 2009-2011 Fit, and Pilot vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless already included in "Zone A" above, Honda is recalling certain model year 2008 Honda Accord, 2006-2008 Civic, Civic Hybrid and Civic GX, and 2007-2008 CR-V vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Vehicles not originally sold or ever registered in either Zones A or B are not subject to this safety recall. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the inflator, free of charge. The recall began March 2017. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall is KA4, KA5, KA6, and KA7.

  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag control units, free of charge. Parts are expected to be available in Fall 2016. Interim notifications have been mailed to owners on March 15, 2016, and a second notice will be mailed when remedy parts are available. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. • Manufacturer: HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:CONTROL MODULE (TCM/PCM/TECM)
  • Summary: HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 ACCORD, 2007-2010 CR-V, AND 2005-2008 ELEMENT PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 1, 2004, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 3, 2010. THE OUTER RACE OF THE SECONDARY SHAFT BEARING MAY BE BROKEN DURING CERTAIN DRIVING STYLES. A BROKEN OUTER RACE MAY CAUSE ABNORMAL NOISE, THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT TO TURN ON, AND ALLOW CONTACT BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION IDLE GEAR AND AN ELECTRONIC SENSOR HOUSING WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION.
  • Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN A SHORT CIRCUIT CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STALL. ADDITIONALLY, BROKEN PIECES OF THE OUTER RACE OR BALL BEARING FROM THE SECONDARY SHAFT MAY BECOME LODGED IN THE PARKING PAWL RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE ROLLING AFTER THE DRIVER HAS PLACED THE GEAR SELECTOR IN THE PARK POSITION. ENGINE STALL AND UNEXPECTED VEHICLE MOVEMENT INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH OR PERSONAL INJURY TO PERSONS WITHIN THE PATH OF A ROLLING VEHICLE.
  • Remedy: HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL UPDATE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 27, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AUTOMOBILE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009.

IF THE HOOD HAS NOT BEEN COMPLETELY CLOSED AND THE NOSE MASK INTERFERES WITH THE SECONDARY HOOD LATCH MECHANISM THE HOOD MAY POP OPEN WHILE THE VEHICLE BEING DRIVEN.
  • Consequence: THIS MAY RESULT IN REDUCED DRIVER VISIBILITY THAT COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Negative Honda Accord 2008 car reviews

  1. Arlo Denesik 2024-11-23

This car has been a disappointment. The brakes wear out quickly and are expensive to replace. The dealer claims that it's normal for the rear brakes to wear before the front, but I'm not convinced. Additionally, there's a strange noise when I start the car, which the dealer said would cost around $800 to fix. The windows also don't go up all the way in cold weather, and the air-con is quite loud. Overall, I'm not satisfied with my Honda and will not be purchasing one again.

  2. Max Lueilwitz 2024-10-27

As a Honda enthusiast, I was excited to consider their vehicles when downsizing from my 07 Infiniti M35. However, I have been disappointed with my recent purchase. The car produces excessive noise and shaking when exceeding 60mph, and the sound system is only satisfactory. Despite its spacious interior, I find it difficult to fully embrace the vehicle. Additionally, I have encountered issues with the Bluetooth connectivity to my phone. Overall, I am regretting my purchase.

  3. Sim Sporer 2024-09-12

I purchased this car brand new in October 2007 with only 28 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with the timing chain and have had to replace it three times now. Despite seeking help from several Honda technicians, I have not been able to determine the root cause of this recurring problem. In addition to this, I have also had to deal with rear brake pad and battery issues, which have been quite frustrating. I have spent over $3500 this year alone on maintenance and repairs, which has been a significant financial burden. As a result, I have decided that this will be my last Honda vehicle. It's a shame because I have been a loyal Honda customer since 1985 and I hate to say goodbye, but I cannot continue to deal with these issues.

  4. Kraig Nolan 2024-09-08

I purchased this car because I needed something that was good on gas and affordable. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it such as the rear brakes going bad at 40,000 miles, the front bumper sagging down from the hood and headlights, and road noise being quite noticeable. Despite these issues, the car does have good power over 3500 rpm. The seats, however, are quite hard and uncomfortable for long drives. Overall, I still own the car, but I wish I had sold it to someone who wanted it more than I did. While I have owned Hondas in the past, this one has been the least enjoyable. I have had better experiences with my 1986 CRX and 1996 Accord. It is important to note that test driving a car does not always reveal everything about it. While there are good and bad things about every car, I do not think I will be purchasing another Honda in the future.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 08' car. It had 16k miles on it when I bought it, and now it has 48800 miles. I've had to replace the brakes once (front and rear), and I'm feeling like I might need to replace them again soon. I've also been experiencing a rattle at cold start and some oil loss, which is a bit concerning. The car seems to drop at idle and has even stalled a few times, which can be scary when you're at a stop on a highway! The dealership where I bought it is a Toyota dealership, so they may be unfamiliar with Honda issues. However, I did purchase a warranty through them, so I'm hoping they can figure it out after I've done some research for them. Let me know if you have any advice or if you've experienced similar issues. Thanks for listening!

Positive Honda Accord 2008 car reviews

  1. Kaley Mohr 2024-11-20

I bought my 2008 Accord EX-L sedan, 4-cyl, 5-speed automatic brand new in March 2008. Since then, it has clocked 130,000 miles and has been just as reliable as my previous 2002 Accord EX. I had the rear brakes replaced with the 'new' Honda brake pads and have not had any issues. While it may not be the perfect car, it has been very dependable, just like the 2002 was before it. I had the complete service done at 105,000 miles and it still runs like new. It may not be the quietest car, but the right tires make all the difference when it comes to road noise. I cannot justify replacing it, it runs too well.

  2. Selmer Ward 2024-10-08

The car has been a great purchase overall! The color is fine, the seats are comfortable, and it has a good balance of power and economy with a range of 24 to 31 miles per gallon. It looks great and has plenty of room, making it perfect for long trips. However, I did experience some issues with the tires and brake rotors. One of the tires was deformed or out of round, which took the dealer a long time and effort to fix. Additionally, the front brake rotors were out of round, but Honda was able to replace them and solve the problem. Unfortunately, the back rotors also went out of round, and I had to pay $100 to have them turned, which was frustrating. Despite these setbacks, the car now has 42,000 miles on it and runs smoothly. It's a fun car to drive and I'm happy with my purchase!

  3. Enos McCullough 2024-09-27

I waited a few months to write this review because I wanted to give myself enough time to get used to its size. I own a 1993 Accord that I love to drive, but the 2008 model is not as fun to drive. However, the gas mileage is good. The acceleration can be slow when cold from 1st to 2nd gear, but it's not a major issue. The seats are a little on the hard side.

  4. Bradly Treutel 2024-09-09

As the top model for the Honda line, I expected the road noise to be quieter. However, the car is still a great choice. Unfortunately, the decision to use a rubber timing belt on the V6 engine is planned obsolescence, requiring replacement at 60,000 miles. This is simply a ploy to pad the pockets of Honda dealers. It is unnecessary for Honda to give back money to the dealer in this way. Despite this issue, Honda still builds a great car. The cost of replacing the belt is $700+ in 2011.

I'm glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car! It sounds like you've taken great care of it and have been lucky to avoid any major maintenance issues. I appreciate you sharing your experience and hope that it continues to serve you well in the future.
