The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 2004 Honda Accord problems

The 2004 Honda Accord has been praised by critics for its quiet, comfortable ride and snappy acceleration, making it an improvement over the 2003 edition. Kelley Blue Book users have also expressed satisfaction with the V6 engine, long lifespan, and low maintenance costs. However, some owners have reported common problems related to the powertrain, airbags, and electrical systems.

Powertrain problems are the most common issue reported by owners, with 341 complaints registered to date. The main concern is related to the transmission, with many drivers missing a recall for a faulty transmission. It is crucial to verify if the vehicle has already undergone the necessary repairs for this recall, as Honda will still cover the transmission repairs, but any additional damages may be the responsibility of the owner.

Airbag issues are another concern for some drivers, with 11 recalls and 242 complaints reported, as recent as late 2022. There have been 4 investigations, 2 of which are still open. This recurring problem may be a cause for worry, as it involves the safety of the vehicle's occupants.

Electrical problems rank third in terms of frequency, with 139 complaints on file. These issues include blinking airbag warning lights, navigation system bugs, windshield wiper failure, and radios going on the fritz. While not as common as powertrain or airbag issues, these problems can still affect the overall driving experience and may become more frequent as the vehicle ages.

The 2004 Honda Accord has a total of 22 recalls on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, along with 994 complaints. While this number of recalls is higher than average, it is better to have a high number of recalls than to have unaddressed problems that could lead to more significant issues down the line.

In terms of longevity, the 2004 Honda Accord is known to last a minimum of 250,000 miles before the transmission gives out, with many drivers reporting that their vehicles have surpassed 300,000 miles with no major issues. RepairPal estimates an annual maintenance cost of $400, with new balance shaft drive belts being the most expensive common fix, starting at $418.

In conclusion, while the 2004 Honda Accord has received positive reviews for its performance and reliability, some owners have reported common problems related to the powertrain, airbags, and electrical systems. It is essential to verify if the vehicle has undergone necessary recalls and to maintain the vehicle regularly to ensure its longevity and reliability.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
  • VIN: 1HGCM56804A
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Air bag light continues to stay on even after having the recall of the wiring harness replaced. Went to the dealership and had the air bag inflater recall fixed on April 1,2021 the light came on and continued to stay on. On 5/24/2024 I serviced my vehicle at Honda of Cleveland and they stated I had an air bag code stating that my driver side airbag sensor is bad but because they fixed the recall in 2007 they said the air bag itself is faulty but not covered under recall. Just needing this documented in case an incident occurs and the air bag is faulty as indicated by the dealership.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-13
  • VIN: 1HGCM82654A
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Rear window shattered, spontaneously, parked. Mostly 1/4 to 3/8 inch pieces, no impact center or chips anywhere. Cause UNKNOWN. With slight vibration the rear window fell into the car, except around glued edges, also including tiny slivers. While the shattered rear window held, it created a huge blind spot behind car, which is a large safety problem. Also driving could leave a trail of glass on public streets. Rear window was vacuumed up and replaced by Glass America, who also had no idea why it shattered. Vehicle was inspected and passed by Colorado vehicle inspectors on January 31, 2024. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure found on April 13, 2024. Car had not been driven for 10 days, parked.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
  • VIN: 1HGCM66534A
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
  • Summary: UNKNOWN - I have a 2004 Honda Accord which indicates an airbag issue. The seat belt buckles but the light stays on. Many 2004 Accords were in a recall over SRS but my VIN did not show as part of the recall. The dealer says the seat sensor is bad but they are not making the part any longer. What should I do. I guess the maker should replace with a new system.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-17
  • VIN: JHMCM56744C
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The honda accord 2004 and close models have an issue with gps control screen that fails to turn on, it keeps getting stocked in one position on which prevents access to air controls as well as gps controls but more important air controls to defog front windshield when in cold weather as driving creating a hazardous condition for the drivers as a potential for accident as the driver attempt to clean windshield but air controls are not accessible on screen, it also controls the radio and maps that are not as important as the air control. Please note that the issue is been present for many years on cars and Honda have not provided a solution just yet as is not a warranty issue instead it will be considered a manufacturers defect that was carried by car owner for the rest of the car life and the challenges presented during the driving on the road unable to access those controls. There are many people complaining about the same issue on these models and have been but a repair have not been offered that I'm aware of it. Once again is not an owners problem or anything that is been caused by car owners instead the part became a defective product. My complain is not about receiving a free product instead receiving assistance on asking the manufacturers to respond to a deflective product provided to consumers and assist with repair and provide parts needed if necessary to correct problem rather that directing consumer to purchase new product that will cost thousands of dollars and not been a consumers fault. Thank you for your assistance.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-15

  • Summary: One day I was driving on the highway I all of a sudden lost power to acceleration. The rpm went up and I pulled over. Put it back in drive to a lower gear to make it home safe. Never had problems with my car until recently. It seems when I get up over 45mph is when the acceleration gives out.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-03-01
  • VIN: 1HGCM72584A
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: This is a followup on Incident 11113944. The problem was actually an aftermarket Ipod adapter connected to the car stereo, it was draining the battery even when the car was off. Also, simply driving the car for a while (like to the mechanic) would always make the problem go away, because the battery eventually recharged. After removing the Ipod adapter and replacing the battery again, I have not had the wipers fail in ~3 years. I think Honda should provide some alert if the battery is at insufficient voltage to run the wipers, however.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-09-29
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JHMCM56704C
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I got off of work early in the morning I get in my 04 Honda Accord and start driving home which only takes about 10minutes, I'm super tired so I go inside and go to sleep rougly around 2 hours, I wake up suddenly to my car alarm going off which I always keep my vehicle locked when Its not visible from me, Anyways I grab my key and click the unlock and lock button but I still hear the alarm going off so I head outside of my home and I see my cars interior on fire and my neighbors already on the phone with 911as he was sitting outside 20 minutes prior, me running frantic back inside for a fire extinguisher first responders we're already there so I run back out the doors are still locked so the first responder climbs on top of my car and kicked the sunroof in and starts using his fire extinguisher which at this point the fire is practically in his face he had to get checked out after incident, there was a police report stating it was a open investigation that they aren't ruling anything out but the thing is the doors and windows were all locked. They did a full scan of the car and the fire started somewhere around drivers side stating it was drivers seat steering wheel/collum and or pedals there was no issues with my car I had it fully inspected/maintenance every 3 months checking levels/gage's every other week I had no warning lights on the dash when I parked to go inside. Also in the police report everything was so melted that they couldn't figure out the cause just a idea of where it started, but I have read about other people that have had this same issue with the same circumstances stating that it's the power steering hoses that can deteriorate prematurely, causing cracks and leaks. I hope that this doesn't happen to anyone else, I loved my car and unfortunately I had liability and my girlfriend and Dad had passed away withing a 5 month gap of this incident so I was extremely devastated from losing my car and didn't know what to do hopefully this helps someone.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-19
  • VIN: 1HGCM81624A
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: My 2 door (coupe) has yet to be recalled for the exploding airbag. The sedan was recalled a long time ago. Undoubtedly the airbags are the same in both cars. Why no recall for the coupe? My guess is that the NHSTA applies separate statistical tests to the coupe and sedan as a matter of course--even if it makes no sense when both use the same part. Because so few coupes were made, the statistical threshold for exploding airbags was never reached to trigger a recall. Am I driving a timebomb? Will my death be the one to trigger a recall? Thank you for your response.

  • Manufacturer: HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.)
  • Components: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS
  • Summary: Honda is recalling certain model year 2007 and 2008 Acura TL and model year 2003-2007 Accord V6 vehicles. In May 2012, Honda filed a defect report to recall certain model year 2007 and 2008 Acura TL vehicles. In September 2012, Honda informed the agency that it was including an additional 573,147 vehicles including certain model year 2003 through 2007 Accord V6 vehicles. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 625,762. Prolonged under-hood and power steering fluid temperatures may cause the power steering hose to deteriorate prematurely, resulting in cracks and power steering fluid leakage.
  • Consequence: If this occurs, power steering fluid can leak onto a hot catalytic converter, leading to smoke and possibly an under-hood fire.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will install a new heat resistant power steering hose, free of charge. The original recall began in June 2012, and owners of those vehicles may obtain the free remedy. Sufficient parts are not yet available for owners of the vehicles covered by the September 2012 expansion, but are expected to be available in early 2013. Honda will notify owners of these vehicles beginning on October 26, 2012, and will notify these owners again when parts are available so those vehicles can be brought to dealers for applications of the free remedy. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009.

Negative 2004 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Rick Beahan 2024-11-22

The driver seat slips out of place every day, but Honda has stated that there are no issues. Additionally, after the passenger side airbag was replaced, the front dash and headliner began to rattle, and there are also rattling and buzzing noises coming from the passenger front and rear door and windows. The upholstery on the seats has several defects, including bald spots and strange creases, despite nobody occupying those spaces. Although disappointing, it is worth noting that there is a strange whine coming from the engine area.

  2. Percival Klocko 2024-10-19

I own a 2004 Honda Accord EX-L with Navigation. Unfortunately, it's currently in a transmission shop and I still owe $6,100 on it. The quote to fix it is $3,000. Despite the car being only 6 years old and having 144,000 miles, the transmission has failed. As a result, I'm disappointed with Honda's transmissions. To keep their customers happy, Honda should make good on their product. While I used to love Honda, I have changed my mind. If you're considering buying this car, I would suggest looking at a Toyota instead.

  3. Cory Swift 2024-06-21

The 04 LX with cloth manual seats is a great car with excellent gas mileage, a quiet ride, and surprisingly quick acceleration for a 4cyl. It comfortably accommodates a family of 4. While the front tires (Michelins) may lack traction, the car's overall performance is impressive. To further enhance the driving experience, improving the padding of the driver seat would be beneficial.

  4. Lula Hills 2024-06-19

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Accord that I bought two years ago. At the time of purchase, it had 70k miles on it and I got it thoroughly checked out. Now, after two years, I have some mixed feelings about it.

  5. Johnathon Spencer 2024-06-02

I bought this car brand new and it has been pretty reliable so far. It handles well, gets decent gas mileage, and can be quite comfortable if you prefer a firm seat. However, there is quite a bit of road and wind noise, which can be a bit bothersome. It would be great if Honda could use more sound dampening material. Additionally, the backlight for the driver's heated seat switch stopped working after 18 months, but the seat still heats up just fine. I find it a bit frustrating that the steering wheel controls don't light up at night, but it's not a major issue. Lastly, I have the gray leather and unfortunately, the driver's seat has already started to crack after only 2 years. It seems like the leather quality could be improved. Overall, I've had a decent experience with this car so far.

Positive 2004 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Alfredo Boehm 2024-11-29

I purchased my Accord brand new back in November 2003 and have always taken it to the dealership for maintenance. Although I have experienced some of the common issues that other drivers have faced, I have only put 72k miles on it to date since I have a work vehicle and don't use it for commuting. The first issue was a recall on the transmission, followed by the radio going out, and then just routine services. Recently, I have been experiencing flickering headlights, but after taking it to the dealership and having it checked, it turned out to be neither the battery nor the alternator. I discovered that the ELD goes up on 2003/2004 Accords around 100k or ten years, and after investing 2k in repairs, it feels like a brand new car. I am aware that the transmission may need attention soon, but I still love this car and believe it's worth it!

  2. Alessandro Hahn 2024-11-20

I really enjoy driving it because it's so smooth to ride.

  3. Gilbert Eichmann 2024-11-20

Hi there! I bought this car just 3 years ago and have had to do some general maintenance, including replacing the rear brakes. Unfortunately, the transmission went out at 93,000 miles, which my mechanic said is a common issue with Hondas. Despite that, it's a really fun car to drive and my teen did great learning to drive it. Although, I do feel like there's a bit of a blind spot in the rear. Overall, it's been a good experience!

  4. Jameson Koepp 2024-09-15

Best car that you'll ever own! It requires hardly any maintenance, has great gas mileage, and is always dependable. You'll only need to replace the rear brake pads at 35,000 miles, get new tires, and a new battery, and that's it in 6 years! The only drawback is that if you're tall, you might find it a bit of a squeeze to get in. The leg room in the passenger seat is very generous though!

  5. Linwood Howe 2024-09-12

After recently comparing various cars, I was pleasantly surprised to find what an outstanding value the Accord in the DX trim turned out to be. I originally intended to buy either the Mazda6 or the Toyota Camry, but after test driving those models I decided to check out the Accord. While the base DX is somewhat spartan with some of the luxury items as compared to the Mazda or Toyota, it was also thousands of dollars less, and had a much more solid feel than the competition.
