The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-06
  • VIN: 1HGCP3F8XCA
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Problem: When the ABS computer system (ABS) fails, the balance between front and rear brakes becomes abnormal even for a vehicle without ABS, it becomes rear biased. Making it unsafe to stop quickly. (90% of the brake force is to the rear). The cost of this part is too expensive for most people to replace and this means that most will drive the car as is without replacing the ABS module. What I expect: I expect that the balance of brake force, is that of a vehicle without ABS (60-70% front).

After the wreck I pumped my breaks to try to move it off the freeway and the breaks started to work again. This is a serious problem because had I been going any faster and even had my other family in the car we all could have been seriously injured or died!!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-01
  • VIN: 1HGCS2A89CA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,SEATS
  • Summary: The trunk release mechanisms of my Honda Accord EXL coupe failed, both manual cable and electrical trunk release. My trunk does NOT open and when I need to access my spare tire in the trunk - I will NOT be able to. A real danger since I live in Canyon Country and often phone reception is poor. The only Honda Model that does NOT have any external nor internal emergency trunk release option. There is no "Valet" button, no decklid access, no external hidden key lock nothing that can release my trunk so I can gain access to my spare tire. Federal Law 49CFR571.401 mandates an emergency internal trunk release. In this Honda Model the ONLY way to get into the trunk from inside is by unlocking and pulling down back seats to access the trunk. BUT the ONLY way to unlock back seats is by pulling a cable that unlocks them which is INSIDE THE TRUNK! So the safety design flaws in the Honda Accord EXL coupe are: there is no emergency access to release the trunk to gain access to the spare tire AND there is no emergency way to unlock back seats to gain access to the trunk since the only way to unlock back seats is IN THE TRUNK. A Mechanical Engineer needed to dismantled the seats to get into the trunk and he tried to release the truck with the Emergency Trunk Release but it is obvious that the latch has failed. if there was ever a person stuck in the trunk that person would NOT be able to free themselves. I do have a video showing the Emergency Trunk Release not working if you like to see it but i can not upload it. I lost my job during the Pandemic and my house has major damage from the massive amount of rain Los Angeles received. I am unable to afford to have a Honda Dealership tell me what I already have on video showing that the Emergency Trunk Release has FAILED and I am in potential danger every time I drive. I asked Honda to fix trunk release latch and expressed the dangerous Coupe Design Flaws but they will not fix the safety problem unless Honda Dealership gets involved.

  • VIN: 1HGCP2F37CA
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: The Driver's side seat belt does not latch. The problem started 3 months ago. We contacted Honda Dealer and was told it is not part of the Honda Seat Belt Recall as the recall relates to Honda models 2018-2020. However please note it is the SAME EXACT PROBLEM with the seat belt in my car. I have been using the PASSENGER SIDE LATCH to buckle the seatbelt. I contacted Honda Corporation and was told to have the car inspected by local Honda Dealer and provide them with a Inspection report. Honda corporation is not willing to fix the seatbelt issue. I am informing your agency so you can take appropriate action and include the older models of Honda with the same seat belt problem as the current recall on Honda before someone get injured due to the fact they are using passenger seat belt latch. Also we are unable to use the passenger seat. Please give this matter urgent attention as it is a BIG SAFETY issue.

  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1HGCP3F8XCA
  • Components: AIR BAGS,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2012 Accord exl - Engine Seizure! I had the air-bag recall done about 5 years ago. None of the air-bags deployed when the 2012 exl hit a telephone pole at 20 mph and broke the telephone pole in half. I finally found out about the class action lawsuit for the excessive oil consumption yesterday (1 Qt per 1,000 miles), 2 years after the engine seizure. I spoke with Honda headquarters (1919 Torrance Blvd., Torrance, ca 90501) today for an hour and a half. mostly on hold waiting for [XXX] to get her stupervisor [XXX] to come to the phone. Honda Seemed to think my 2012 v6 exl is not part of the lot of cars they were supposed to fix in the excessive oil consumption class action lawsuit. If you have any advice on how I could recover any funds spent on my engine repair or if there is any recourse I could take with the airbags not deploying when I had the recall done 5 years ago at my local Honda dealer. Thanks [XXX] PS.. Cherokee Auto in North Atlanta Georgia has the car for sale with the faulty airbags… CarMax repossessed it, sold it for more than I owed them, wrote off $6500 as bad debt, and still say I owe them 750 and staying on my credit report. Pls help! TF INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Luckily, the Upa Baby carseat protected her and she was not hurt, nor was anyone else. Airbags did not deploy. Now i have to get a new car which is very costly, using the little I will get from insurance payout. The car was well maintained with less than 50,000 miles without any other prior incidents. I do see that other motorists have had similar experiences with this make and model. It should be investigated further, in order to avoid serious injuries to others.

Negative 2012 Honda Accord car reviews

  1. Ignatius Koelpin 2024-11-08

I purchased this car new and maintained it to the manufacturer's specifications. Unfortunately, the transmission failed at 120k miles and needed to be replaced.

  2. Aron Osinski 2024-10-03

The powertrain of this car has some issues with slow acceleration, flat spots, and hesitation. The 5-speed manual transmission has a crunchy 1-2 shift and is geared for fuel economy, which can make shifting difficult. The E-Throttle is also unpredictable and can be difficult to adjust to. However, the car performs better on the highway and has good real-world mileage. The interior has a good layout and spaciousness, although the materials used are not of the highest quality. Road noise can be quite loud, but the seats are comfortable for long drives. In terms of reliability, the car has not had any check engine lights for 90k miles and has good real-world mileage. The rear brakes have needed to be replaced three times, but the factory fronts have held up well. Overall, this car has its flaws but can still be a good choice for those looking for a spacious and fuel-efficient vehicle.I noticed a weird popping sound when I first pull out of a parking spot after sitting, but it seems to have gone away. Despite getting alignments and rotations, my tires have uneven wear and are terribly loud due to cupping and no sound insulation. I had to replace two lower motor mounts at 85k due to clunking, and the car still isn't running smoothly. I'm not sure if it needs axles, but I'm considering it. Overall, my driving experience has been less than ideal - slow, hesitate-y, boring, loud, and depressing. Although I got a great deal on a no-option stick base model, the car feels every bit like an economy car.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Accord since I bought it in February. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some lower back problems for the first time in my life. It's been tough, and I even had to take a leave of absence to undergo epidural steroid injections. Recently, I made a connection that the pain returns whenever I drive for a lengthy amount of time. It's been a real struggle, and I'm worried about having to go through it again. I reached out to Honda, and I'm hoping for a positive outcome. Thanks for listening!

  4. Dylan Crooks 2024-09-13

The steering on the 2012 Accord is extremely difficult to handle and requires both hands. Previous versions, including the 2011 model, had much softer steering, so it's unclear why Honda made this change. Unfortunately, driving this vehicle is not very comfortable, and the steering feels more like that of a truck at slow speeds.

  5. Dayne Mertz 2024-08-12

I purchased a car with 44,000 miles off a Honda Lease. Unfortunately, I experienced a power steering leak at 50,000 miles and found that the power steering rack was leaking. Despite my efforts to get it covered by Honda of America, they refused to pay for it. I decided to replace it for $900 to avoid the oil spot in my garage. Additionally, the wire recoil broke in the steering wheel, causing me to lose all controls on the steering wheel and potentially my airbag until it is fixed. Despite my belief that this is a defective part, Honda of America denied my claim. As a result, I will have to spend $1400 every 3-5 years to replace these items if Honda continues to deny that they are defective. Due to these issues, I have decided to switch to Toyota. It is worth noting that my parents also had issues with their Honda Odyssey and Honda of America would not cover a defective transmission for them.

I'm so glad to hear that you're okay after such a scary accident! It's amazing how the 2011 Accord Coupe was able to protect you so well. I can understand why you loved that car so much! It's great that you were able to replace it with the 2012 Accord Coupe, and even better that you were able to upgrade to the EX-L model. It's always nice to have a few extra bonuses! I hope you continue to enjoy your new car just as much as your previous one.

  2. Ben O'Connell 2024-08-28

This car has been a real luxury for the last seven years and has required very little maintenance over and above normal wear and tear. Although there are a couple of things that could be improved, such as the road noise being a bit too loud for a 2012 model, even after adding sound deadening material and quieter tires. Also, the navigation system updates are quite expensive and the onboard maps are a couple of years out of date. However, my wife and I still thoroughly enjoy the ride, comfort, control, and power from the V6 engine. If Honda could keep up with the technology and noise-canceling features available in its competition, we would definitely buy another Accord in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, we have decided to transition to an Audi sedan later this year. Thank you for reading!

  3. Jaylen Larson 2024-08-27

I've put 78k trouble-free miles on this car since I bought it brand new. I do my own engine oil and transmission oil changes. Living in a hilly area, I put new rear brakes on at about 65k miles. One of the tires had sidewall damage, so I replaced them at 75k miles. The tires still had tread left. The car handles well, but the suspension is firm, so if you drive on bumpy roads, it will give a rough ride. The four-cylinder engine is smooth and quiet in everyday driving, but will accelerate hard if you put your foot to the floor. This is the last year of the five-speed automatic transmission. I like the firm seat foam, but the fabric could be of better quality. Going 70 mph on long trips, I get 35 mpg, and I get 25-27 in town. I did make a 5-hour trip on state routes with a 55 mph speed limit, and I got 42 mpg! This car looks good and is a great value. It's comfortable for four adults and has a huge trunk.

Third Honda. They always deliver good reliability and require low maintenance.

  5. Zack Gusikowski 2024-05-13

The 2012 Honda Accord is a great car that performs well both on long trips and around town. Its interior is incredibly comfortable, and it's hard to find any faults with this vehicle. I highly recommend it. Additionally, the dealer support is excellent and very accommodating.
