1990 Honda Accord problems
The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.
Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.
In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.
In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 1990 Honda Accord problems
Based on the information provided in the search results, here are some common problems with the 1990 Honda Accord based on complaints from owners:
- Idle Fluctuations: Owners have experienced idle fluctuations in the 1990 Honda Accord, where the idle goes to 1500 then 1000 when warmed up and cold. This issue could be related to the idle air control (IAC) unit or a vacuum leak in the intake plenum affecting the air/fuel mixture.
- Backfiring: Backfiring, characterized by loud explosions in the intake manifold or exhaust system, can occur due to an air/fuel ratio imbalance. This can lead to unburnt fuel exiting through the exhaust, causing poor fuel economy. Backfiring can be caused by issues like incorrect spark plug timing, non-combustion fuel in the exhaust system, or faulty oxygen sensors.
These problems highlight some of the issues that owners of the 1990 Honda Accord have faced, ranging from minor electrical issues to more complex engine-related concerns.

Our Honda has over 150,000 miles on it and it's still running strong. The steering is tight and nimble, and it uses zero quarts of oil between changes. It's important to change the timing belt at regular intervals, and keep an eye out for any warping of the rotors, as this can cause your steering wheel to shimmy while driving. In the rust belt, the rear wheel well area is prone to rusting out, even if the rest of your Honda's body is in great shape. Water can get trapped in this area with no way out. Luckily, our local body shop was able to cut out the rust and weld in new pre-formed sheet metal on both sides for under $800.

Great car! It has lasted us a long time since we got it in '92. We're still waiting for it to break down so we can get a newer model, but it's just so safe and reliable. The air-conditioning and heating system are great, and it's really comfortable too!

I am the proud owner of a 90 Accord LX Coupe that has been in my family since it was new. Despite the passing of my mother a few years ago, I have taken great care of the car and it is now in impeccable condition. The paint still shines, with only a few minor scratches from regular use, and the interior looks as if it just rolled off the factory floor. By properly maintaining and storing a vehicle, it is possible to preserve its condition for many years to come.

Hey there! I'm so excited to tell you about my three Honda Accords - a 1990, 1992, and 1993 model. Can you believe that I'm almost at the 500,000 mile mark? I'm really proud of my cars and I take good care of them. Whenever something goes wrong, my mechanic is always there to help and he even gives me a lifetime warranty on his work. The transmissions are super tough and the engines last forever. I think the folks in Marysville, Ohio who put these cars together really know what they're doing!

Congratulations on celebrating 19 years together! It's wonderful to hear that your car has been so reliable over the years, with only routine maintenance needed. You've taken great care of it with several brake jobs, a set of CV boots, a new radiator, several sets of Michelins, two timing belts, and new motor mounts. It's impressive that you've only averaged about $250 per year over the life of the car. The radio, tape deck, clock, and AC all work great, which is a testament to the quality of the car. I can understand why you haven't been able to part with it, even after test driving new cars every year. Your kids must be proud of you for taking such good care of it. Thank you for sharing your story!

Despite some initial challenges, this car has proven to be a reliable and enjoyable vehicle to drive. While there were multiple warranty issues and battery replacements in the first 9 years, I was able to find a solution by seeking repairs from a different dealer. Since then, the car has been running flawlessly for years, with the Sears battery still going strong after 7 years. Although it does require new motor mounts, I am confident that this car will continue to serve me well for another 100,000 miles. It is a great choice for a second car.
